I would keep the emus in the coop when it is that cold. Poor thing was trying to conserve her heat on the ground. I make sure all my mini coops are completely covered in 1-3 layers of greenhouse plastic (6 mil) and I don’t expose my birds to the elements and let them free range if it is less than 20 degrees for big birds and 30 degrees for bantams. I do use supplemental heat on my seramas when temp gets below 20 because most of them are frizzles and they need it.

Do you know about putting Chapstick on the birds combs and feet to prevent frostbite?? I'm sure Vaseline would work too. You can get those at the Dollar Store cheaper than other stores too. We also put two ice melter heaters in our bigger troughs when it is going to be super cold. A pond water pump keeps the water flowing and helps with freezing too. A small fish tank heater works in small waterers and buckets. You could use big dog crates covered with plastic for the emus or make a makeshift lean-to off of the emus house for extra shelter. You could also spray the hurt ones foot with Blucote medicated spray. That will keep you safely away and help with not getting kicked.

You can’t wait to the last minute to care for your animals in arctic weather. One year we lost most of all the birds we had. All our fault. The minute we knew cold weather was coming we should have had a better plan. So sad to remember.

The roos are more prone to frostbite because their larger wattles get wet when they drink. Vaseline helps repel the water but as cold as this was they probably need their wattle taped flat with vet tape. Some people have had luck preventing this by knitting wool hoods for their roos. The wool will retain 60% of its heating value when wet. If you make them snug they will also hold the wattles out of the water. Use Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic ointment on the damaged tissue so they don't get secondary infections. The blackened comb tips can just be trimmed off. The roo that you see in my picture here was an Olive Egger but after a round with frostbite his comb was reduced to the size of a full Americana.

We've Had our emus out in - 35 - 40 they are tough birds. We get this every winter _30 to -50 . The rest of the birds stay indoors in winter. As well as the Emus now.. Have you thought of making a hoop coop for winter and keeping all the birds in it? Other than maybe your exotics cause you'll have the Aviary done by next year?? If you guys know Morgan on Goldshaw farms he put up a new one this fall and keeps all his ducks geese and chickens in it for winter. Just a thought.

Holy Heck, if I were an emu, I would cry being on this farm in winter. Just because a living being CAN survive minus 30 outdoors does not mean it should. I am serious. Useless Farm, north of Kingston in Canada, has 2 emus that are brought in every night and have a hayed room. I renember in Little House in the Prairie book series, Pa had to go from cow to cow, covering their snout with his gloved hands, because their breathe had frozen them to the ground and he had to melt the ice do they vould greak free. That one emu. It almost seemed she was partly frozen to the icy ground. They need a barn.

Probably a combination from both for lack off milk. The calf needs more milk to keep its energy up just to stay warm and the cow needs to put more energy towards staying warm herself. Hopefully your animals continues to do okay in this cold snap!

Kevin over at Hidden Heights Farm was real concerned about there two emus. He lives in the Ozark Mountains of Oklahoma. I think the heartland of the US got the brunt of this storm. But anything close to the Hurricane Corridor was going to be susceptible to this Polar Vortex. Glad you all made it through. We had some windy days but we had some cold days but nothing like you all had. I follow another channel out of Minnesota. "Northern Seclusion. They live in Cloquet MN which is about 30-40 miles from Lake Superior. They usually get negative weather throughout much of winter but they were getting 40-50 mph wind gust.

Maybe in the spring you can build a proper barn so all the animals won't freeze in the winter. Ask for local volunteers to help with labor or lumber. The cows look like they were freezing too since the whole thing is open in the front. I'm surprised all the birds didn't freeze to death. Poor babies got frostbite.

I've heard applying petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to combs helps prevent frostbite. However, given the brutal temperatures you experienced that might not have helped. What do you do to heal frostbite? In retrospect, it might have been more prudent to put Bamboo, Peekaboo, and Cashew in one pen with shelter and Bert and Ernie in the other solely during the extreme temperatures so that everyone had access to shelter. But hard to know that prior to everything. Here in the Deep South we had 60+ hours of below freezing weather. Two nights temps were in the low teens; nothing like what you faced. Our little flock of 6 chickens has an Omlet Eglu. Their water is in the run, not inside the coop. After the first night, I decided to empty their water every evening after they were in the coop. In the mornings I didn't have to deal with frozen water. All I had to do was refilled the water. During the day highs were in the mid 20's, a relative heat wave compared to what you experienced, so I'd check on the water every few hours. Also we kept the coop door closed longer in the mornings, so they had to stay in the coop where it was warmer. All of us were doing the best we could.

I recently saw a vet give the instructions to feed a miniature horse their feed as a mush with water bc they tend to not drink when it is cold like this. At least they get some water without cooling them more. My guess would be she stopped drinking so less milk.

Can't wait for you to have the aviary up hopefully this new year. That'll help a part of your birds. I saw someone else use those giant outdoor heaters like they have at restaurants on their homestead, though if that were me, I'd want a camera to monitor those on my phone every few hours to make sure they're working, and not starting fires. Maybe your next big project, if you're not already considering it, is maybe a barn or something you can bring your animals into for extreme weather. I know they're working animals, but my grandparents who grew up in the depression era said they'd bring animals in in extreme weather. I'm not one hundred percent sure on the large livestock though. As I understand it, horses, and cattle, being range animals in the wild are designed to thermoregulate. But they should still have a shelter option if they want it to go in and out of at will. I know your cows currently have their little barn, but just saying for future reference for anyone that might read this comment.

I didn't realize you're in Missouri; I am as well, but I'm about 65 miles south, southwest of STL. We got -35 here. It was brutal by myself at my age and with disabilities trying to tend animals in that. Luckily I am much smaller than you. I have a few roosters that got pretty severe frostbite on combs and wattles; they will lose them. Most have rose or walnut combs. Only two hens have large combs (Sapphire Olive Eggers) and their combs got frostbite. I have one silky rooster and a bunny with 5 babies, that I put in pet taxis and set inside the unheated shed. New coop, no drafts, good ventilation and I still had frostbte damage but I lost no one. Quail were fine, dogs, rabbits and chickens. That was SUCH a brutal storm and we have known for months this was coming, just not when and how bad.

We're in the midwest here, we had to do some extra for the critters this season so far. You might want to put up some fence in that small barn to separate the birds so they don't fight. Just split the building in two. We did it to separate our goats (billies from females) and the donkey. It would be a shame to lose those emu's as they aren't what I'd call real winter resistant. We had to put a couple brooder panels in our chicken houses to keep the roosters from getting frostbit combs, it's happened before here. They're about $45 and 250 watts but they do the job. The ducks and geese share those houses so they were okay. The goats and donkey were fine in their barn with a heat lamp and some tarps to trap a little heat around their pens, a tank heater in their trough. We still had to haul out hot water during chores so they could all stay hydrated when bedded down for the night. Don't fall for that "once in a generation" line, storms are getting more severe each year and those who care for livestock need to be better prepared. Especially if the critters provide KZbin revenue.

I was out checking water multiple times a day and luckily got a larger run put up as it started snowing. Wrapped it in tarps and they have an Eglu coop. None had frostbite and I strongly believe it was due to the ventilation in the coop. My girls were so happy when they were able to come out of the tarped up run and flap their wings in 50 degree weather. Back down in the 40s today, but they don't care. They would have gone out in the freezing weather if not for the snow I'm sure of it.

I have known farmers including my grandfather who would put a untreated 2 x 4 of any links into the waters when it got this cold as the last three days of freeE crossed do US Midwest.. because it keeps the top of the water from freezing. You can put a longboard in the water tanks for the cattle and you can put shorter pieces in the buckets but it really does work and it always lets the animals drink water around the board. I’m so glad that none of the animals died and especially the two emus forced‘s to stay out in the cold- I guess you’ll have to come up with a different solution before the next cold freeze . You might also think about getting some extra water pans so that you don’t have to work so hard at getting the ice out when you’re wanting to save time and then later after the ice size round the edges because you take it inside a barn or something you can kick out the block of ice and have them ready for the next watering. Just a suggestion. I know everybody gives advice but I live in the Midwest where we get snow and ice for months on end… so I’ve learned some tricks for my dad and my grandfather. I’m glad you took the garden hose in because those were split in the cold and they won’t be any good to you. We always take our garden hose in every winter actually when fall comes I just before the first freeze. One year my husband forgot one of them and left it connected to the house Fawcett,… we went out of town for the weekend and when we came back we had water all over the basement family room and we just put new carpeting and everything down there in plans for a New Year’s gathering with the church group as well as a football New Year’s Day group with his friends and needless to say neither took place!

Please make a barn even if its small for your chickens and anything else which is getting frostbite. Those chickens, could have done with more bedding in their pen. We keep our animals in captivity and they should be comfortable enough not to be having issues with frostbite which of cause causes suffering. Imagine if you and your family were left in a situation where you got frost bite. In my country something like this would get the animal welfare groups people on your doorstep and potentially having you taken to court over it or the animals taken away. (In weather extremes, Ive even brought my chickens inside the house and put them into the bathroom to be safe and comfortable).

East texas here. We ended up with quite a few frostbit combs, but otherwise we made it through. Glad you guys made it through. This was the roughest winter I think I ever saw. The ice storm blackouts a few years back were bad, but this got even lower. (At least thos time if we had lost power, I have 2 fire pits I could light, but thankfully we didn't lose power this time.)

You all work so hard. I really admire that! I hate cold weather so I can imagine how you guys felt. It's hard work and your family does everything it can to care for your animals. I hope the new year brings you blessings!!

LONG TIME viewer here ❤️ Hi Jake and Becky!! I was worried about you all! ( Including feathers and fur friends alike) when I watched this my heart went out to your roos w frostbite 🥶 I HAVE BEEN HERE! One thing that surprised me tho, I thought you would have had far more straw and bedding everywhere. In all your tractors, pigs, coops, Emus, cows. Everywhere. Is there a reason why? ( No judgement) I know you all had those Emus come in last min and all, but I held my breath seeing you trying to get the one off the ground. Is there a way you could grow hay? And bale it? To help offset costs? I can't imagine how much that would cost to buy. I had 40-50 chickens, and boy I know that in itself was EXPENSIVE 160lbs of pellet every 2 weeks, then scratch and bedding. I also donated all the eggs to people who needed them. ❤️ I no longer have my chickens. Those chickens kept me moving after I was shot TWICE here in Indianapolis in a drive by shooting not aimed towards us but it got us. Those chickens were my everything. I made the choice for them to go to a sanctuary so that my 21 year old daughter could come back home without worrying about people shooting at her or us ( long story) not a day goes by that it doesn't hurt me. I miss them so much. My favorite Roo "Roodle" died in October at almost 7yrs old. I just found out. That hurt so bad. He was different. He did tricks!! ( It's in my KZbin channel, please go look!!) Anyway your in my thoughts all the time! You keep me going! Love y'all! Happy new year from "Grandma Chicken"!!

Very cute ducks. I'm glad you didn't lose any animals to the cold. Hopefully the frost bitten roosters recover quickly and hopefully no more terrible snow storms in the new year.

I noticed you have the same band wheelbarrow I have. The only difference is the one I bought has two front wheels. What a difference that extra wheel makes. It takes away having to balance the wheelbarrow. You can load it up full with rocks, dirt or sand and you have no problems moving it. Even on rough terrain. It is well worth the investment and your body with thank you too. Cheers😁

Goodness you guys! I have no idea how you manage being in that cold 😭🥶 you do such a great job!! I’m sat here in the Caribbean feeling freezing just from watching you! My heart goes out to all the people who have to face these kinds of temperatures. I’m from England and I’ve always suffered when it only gets to 0C, never mind when it gets as cold as it is there for you. Now I live in the Dominican Republic and I get cold when it’s 20C 😂 love your videos and I hope that you have a great new year, and that you get through the winter safely.

I feel bad when the rooster combs and wattles get frostbit. Can't feel good for them, but those warm weather breeds are prone to it, and who could predict that crazy storm. The day before I worked all day outside prepping 29 line items with subsections, hose bibs, moved my mower to a neighbor's garage so I had part of the shed for the chickshaw. It wasn't nearly big enough for the girls (hens), but they were out of the weather and got a cabbage pinata for a boredom buster. Glad that's over.

I've seen others put down hay. They keep putting it down each month but clean it in the spring. This way, the stool breaks down, causing heat.
