Mama ducks caused a Mandarin duckling Disaster.

So many people are having a hard time getting birds to hatch and survive this year. We definitely are with our peafowl. I wish I knew why; nobody seems to totally understand what’s causing it. Please ignore the folks who criticize what you do. I’m betting that none of them have a true working farm like you do. One of the things that makes your channel so great is that you honestly and humbly learn as you go and share that with your followers. You’re doing a great job! Keep it up!

@@tonynguyen6313 They tried to do something for the other two weak ones. Nature is something that chooses the strong and weak, their gene pool pretty much. It’s natures way of keeping weak genes from passing on to the next generation, so those ducklings had something wrong with them and that’s not by choice of this family. Humans can only play god so much, we can’t completely control life and death. If that were they case, none of our loved ones would ever die, whether young or old.

I completely agree with you, Laurel. I had a broody hen, she had 23 eggs under her, most of them hatched, but unfortunately they died when they where wet. I just had one baby hatch from her, but he died. (Hawk, and he was a month old) there also was a broody hen that sat on the first broody hens eggs. 6 hatched, but only 2 survived. It’s such a weird thing. I wonder why this year is not doing well? +please, never give up. I currently only have one baby chick still alive, (I have 9 hens, and 1 rooster)but, I will not give up, and I will always have next year.

The best way to heat any warm blooded animal back to body temp is with your OWN BODY HEAT… hold them against your stomach and it’ll raise their temp perfectly. The direct air from the blow dryer can be too much for them to catch their breath.

Although I am sorry about the loss of 6 mandarin ducks, I feel like that could’ve been avoided simply by getting the ducklings out of the nesting box and putting them either in a brooder or with their mom so that they could stay warm and survive.

@@carterpitbull7366 after going back and looking at the video I realized that when he said that ducklings may die in the box, he wasn’t actually saying it the night the ducklings hatched, so I get your point. Although I still don’t know why he wouldn’t have known, because this was filmed in April when the nights were cold, so if the baby mandarins weren’t warmed by mom then they would most likely die (which is what happened).

@@-budgie-4923 i think one of the possible reasons why he couldn't take the chicks out the box is because he was expecting for the mama duck to return to the nest, like other birds would usually do. I don't blame or see that as a total mistake on his part. You just had to put trust in the instincts of these animals to take care of their young. But one can learn from mistakes, hopefully.

That’s how mandarin ducklings do their hatches, they jump out and the ducklings follow them. Last year I removed the ducklings immediately and viewers were angry for interfering. Now I didn’t interfere enough? I can’t win.

Liked the video but can agree with some that the deaths could of been avoided, it is very cramped conditions and the ducklings in the box wouldn’t of died if you took them in, the mother will only focus on the ones that are out and not in especially if it’s dark she won’t go back up at night when she knows she has to keep her present babies warm. I know your desperate to level the numbers but it’s way to cramped keep a nice small number and once the aviary is done and ready then you can hatch as many as you want with in reason. Hi, I’m not sure if you guys have chicken wire inside your duck boxes, but I would strongly recommend it if not! The wire gives ducklings something to grab as they climb their boxes and can really help them get out and get their little lives started :)

Duckling survival is very low. They don't even have a 50/50 chance. And on top of that, you have an even more rare hatching breed. Even knowing all this, it is still a heart breaker. Also, I noticed that Eli and Uriah are just shooting up so fast. I think they both might be taller than Jake by the time they hit 15. Sheesh.

Your chicken tractors are really overcrowded or too small (for the peacocks)... Animals get stressed when they don't have room to get away from others. I know you plan to build the giant aviary but as of right now, the conditions your birds have to live in are terrible. And you as a KZbinr should lead by an example. Otherwise, more people will think it's ok to permanently keep 5 pairs of mandarin ducks in a chicken tractor with bowl of water instead of a pond and it will lead to more mistreated animals. You first build the enclosure and then get the animals!

i have two rabbits, made their entire enclosure a month before i got them (it’s literally bigger than what they keep their birds in). I recently got a crested gecko and as well made his enclosure weeks prior to getting him. It’s so so so dumb to get animals and than not have the right space for them. Even though they are planning to make a bigger space, the birds are still very very stressed until that happens and can associate the stress/mistreatment with them. My friend got a bearded dragon and since she saw them keep them together in the stores, she assumed she could keep them together for the rest of their lives. Another one of my friends did the same thing with hamsters and they killed each other. This is what he’s doing as well :/ Yes the people should do research, but they are also taking advice from people they think know what they are doing.

You don’t understand bird production. Especially outside and uninsulated, it’s better for the birds to have a good number of other birds with them. The more birds that put off body heat, the warmer they’re able to keep their coop.

@@Thatguy-fg4fp Yeah maybe for domesticated animals that were for hundreds of generations cramped in small spaces and are bred to be used to it as they had no other choice (that still doesn't make it ok imo but not important now). Not so much for pheasans, mandarin ducks and peacocks. They are more or less wild animals. I'm quite sure the mandarins would be happier in freezing temperatures but with more space to get away from the other individuals, same for the pheasants, which are quite solitary and elusive animals and I'm not even mentioning how small the enclosure is a for a peacock... they can barely turn in there. Plus the chicken tractors aren't their coops, it is what they are locked in permanently, no choice to go outside. This is a border what I would consider an animal cruelty and for sure would not show it to people as an example how it's done here on yt. I understand rare animals get you clicks on the internet but you have to take a special care of them, they are not chickens or your normal ducks.

I see some people are very upset that so many birds died. I will admit it is a very sad thing to see. However, knowing to take them away comes with experience and sometimes you have to have the failures to learn exactly what to do next time. Unfortunately if those chicks had been in the wild they would have died anyway, it's kind of harsh to say but very true. It's all part of life, doesn't make is any less sad though. I just had a litter of kittens all pass away from Panleukopenia and it was terrible. With all that said. I don't think Jake and Becky are mis treating their animals. Do they need more space yes, and that is something they are working on. It is taking longer than planned but it is something they are working on. I'm not saying they are perfect as no one is but I don't think they are being cruel or behaving in a way that is overly harmful to their animals.

Idk if you will see this Jake-or anyone- but ive found if i give all my birds that are hatched in an incubator sugar water (ive found 1 pt sugar to 2 parts water) they seem to perk up really well. I had a broody chicken the other day that one of her chicks got too cold-i thought it was dead- and brought it inside, warmed it up, and made the sugar water and put it in a syringe (no needle of course) and 6 hrs later it was back with its mom :) hope this helps someone ;)

@@whitehouseonthehill Hey, take some advice from the comments. Any wood ducks are very territorial and shouldn't be kept in such small space. Try to work on some new pens for em, it just takes some wood, fence and something to make a roof. 6 hours at most for the big ones.

@@whitehouseonthehill I used to work on a farm when I was younger for a few years and we had the same types of birds aswell as other livestock and crop. You want to warm them with body heat or a lamp/heat pad rather than a blow dryer because it can burn, especially on such thin skin. With dew still on the grounds in the morning and winds the chicks are going to get cold, they're much smaller than us still. Overall they also need larger pen sizes because wood ducks and other breeds can be very territorial. There's plenty of amazing sources to take tips from, I'd recommend doing some more research. Running a family farm is difficult.

that incubator is the Brinsea ova-easy 100 advance and its pretty cheap for the quality but still like 1,100 dollars. if that seems to expensive i would suggest the nurture right 360 its worked very well for me and its only like 150. also that seems kinda strange that your silkies wont go broody i have honestly never heard of silkies who dont go broody.

I grew up on a farm and raised birds as an adult. I always research the natural environment the bird comes from. I look up rain fall, temperature, causes of decline, and pretty much anything I can find. Maybe there is something in the research that can help. I wonder if they are like American Wood Ducks in behavior. I know that they do really well away from any activity during nesting, but I know nothing of Mandarins. I really enjoyed the video and feel bad for ya'll losing those babies like that. Take care.

This is why I always bring in pipping eggs and toss them in a brooder. Sometimes I bring in a momma but I don't trust them to make it safely outside.

I would say make a separate pen for the momma ducks and or when the chicks hatch. That way the mom can care for them in a seperate space. And maybe instead of trying to sell hatching eggs, just hatch them yourself and sell the baby birds or adults. That way you get more money for them and you avoid all those idiots that messed up your sales last time. Just a thought

Easy to say, but we had four different hens sitting on eggs over 3 months. We’re trying to get the aviary done so we can get them moved over so they’ll have plenty of space.

@@whitehouseonthehill I know but maybe just have one pen specifically for mommas and babies only and when more hens hatch more babies just throw them all in there. Pretty sure they wouldn’t fight. Or you could’ve put the mom in that little pen too that you put the babies inside the shed. You would’ve had better rate with her in there since it’s small she’d have to sit and they could’ve went under her. Cus even in the future cage if the babies don’t follow the mol they’re gana die since she’ll be outside. And it’ll be a big cage. I’d say best best is as soon as they hatch put all babies and their mommas in a small cage for about 2 weeks just till they’re strong enough to be outside

Anyway onto the point i had a duckling that had a broken beak and i took care of for 3 days until he died of trauma in his sleep (he got into the turkey cage and the turkeys broke the beak btw)

My buddy has a duck house for his mandarin babies and mamas. It’s a building with 6 big pens and a poured concrete floor. With poured concrete ponds. The sides a wrapped in chicken wire and covered with clear roofing panels so it stays warm year round. In the summer he takes some panels off of needed. Just a thought if you really want to get serious with the mandarins lol.
