I really started watching anime in High School, then when I started SAO I told one of my classmates I sat with in art and he was like "Basic." Needless to say that made me feel a bit discouraged with the idea I chose a "bad anime" or the "wrong anime".

The studio that animates SAO is A-1. You’re right about different arcs taking place on different games but it gets a bit more complicated later. As for the stakes there are some heavy stakes since the beginning but I won’t spoil anything because watching it unfold is really unexpected and cool. As for the second half of the openings is for one big arc that ties everything together while also giving a new plot, new characters and really big irl stakes. The anime is currently on hiatus because it caught up with the light novel but hopefully we’ll get season 5 in a couple of years 👌👌 There’s also currently 3 movies, one which ties seasons 1 and 2 to the later arc of seasons 3 and 4. The other to movies are (kinda) prequels but is easier to understand once you watch it. And another original movie was announced on the anime's 10th anniversary event a couple months ago. Hopefully this movie will tie season 4 to season 5 but fingers crossed.

SAO takes place in different virtual MMO's. In the first arc it's the titular Sword Art Online, in the second arc an elf-based game, the third arc a shooter, and the final arc a prototype for a new full-dive technology. There are some stakes involved despite it "all being a game" however, but I won't spoil exactly what causes the stakes to be there. My favorite arc is Alicization (the final arc for now), it's highly enjoyable and the openings are bangers.

Please for the love of all that's good react to this show 😭 so few react to it. It's my favorite, my OG 😭 yes it gets "slow" for a couple arcs, but IMO it's because some arcs are more focused on emotional things rather than action. BUT YES I ADORE IT!!! And the payoff is 100% worth it once you hit season three with all that background and stories and characters of the previous 2 seasons, oof, it fits together like a beautiful symphony 😭

The SAO Ending Songs + Visuals are just as good as the openings, I definitely recommend you check them out also! There are also 9 in total. The series itself is over-hated due to popular anitubers dissing the show just for the sake of dissing the show. If anything, SAO really only has mixed reviews in the west, but everywhere else, people love the series. The series itself isn’t perfect, but it is enjoyable and that’s all that really matters. Don’t listen to those who are discouraging y’all to watch it, it’s best to form your own opinions without the influence of other people trying to peg it down to the level of dirt beforehand.

I absolutely loved SAO, but one thing that I think it suffered from was it's pacing they were constantly switching to new concepts without spending time to really deeply explore the concepts they already had. At first it was just swords and defeating bosses with real threat levels for losing. Then they cut off early and switched to the fairy arc, where magic is now a thing players can use, cool, then they introduced guns for a season but a lot of that season was back in fairy land and not the game the season was named after. Then allocatization arc happened and they got the pacing back on track for three seasons again.

Please react to this show! Very few people react to it and it’s one of my OG anime that I’d love to see proper reactions too! (Though personally, Fruits Basket is the one that got me hooked on anime.) Only thing I’ll say about all four seasons is, YES, this anime deals with a LOT of those “What could possibly go wrong with VR?” scenarios like you guys brought up. Also, just as a side note: Asuna, the “ginger and white” girl, and the “blue and white” girl, are the same character. Like you said, these virtual games use avatars, and an avatar can be modified (as you see many times with the male MC as he switches through different games). Players can also make alt. accounts to build more than one avatar too. I’d focus more on facial features than the hair color of the avatars, cause the facial features at least stay consistent across avatars. 🤗

This quickly became the must watch mainstream anime so there was a backlash highlighting how simple some of the plotlines were, how cheap the villains were and that the pacing early on was all over the place. Then there was a change of setting which led to a wave of those not liking the change. The original author was not happy with the jump-about pacing of his early novels this adapts and has gone back and started rewriting that story - which is being adapted as the latest film series in this franchise... but it'll take decades to complete! If you don't go in expecting an anime-defining experience and forgive the cliché 'bad guy must attack girls' (in that way) then this is a most enjoyable franchise with lots of variety over it's run. The show has several story arcs with different settings, often using 'the next gen' of the tech showing how things evolve, with a Lord Of The Rings style epic in the last few seasons that redeemed the franchise for many. The 'Ordinal Scale' film is cannon and sits between the 2nd and 3rd seasons. The 'Progressive' films are a remake of the first story. For even more variety there was a spin-off of the second season, 'Gun Gale Online' and there is another anime 'Accel World' from the same author's work which is heavily implied to cover events ~20 years later. (GGO is a complete standalone, AW leaves us with a fraction of the novels covered + a film that skipped too much to make sense.)

Hope you watch the "Progressive" film series of Sword Art Online. It's a lengthened rebooted film series based on the Aincrad arc. The difference is that Asuna is the main lead instead of Kirito, there's a new anime original character introduced in to this, and the ending is reckoned. There's only been one film so far but if you wait until February they should be airing the second one in theatres.
