Fun fact: Helga, the blonde that helps Rourke, was animated in Japan, separately from the rest of the characters, so you might notice that her animation is smoother compared to the other characters. I just thought it was interesting.

One of my all time favorite films not just animated and with the Best Disney princess and the first one that became a queen! Take that Elsa! Now here are the facts to share: -This was basically Disney’s first foray into an action adventure animated film, -The directors were Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise who both directed Beauty and the Beast along with The Hunchback of Notre Dame, -all of the dialogue by Don Novello who voiced Viinny was improvised even though he had his lines in front of him. -the Atlantean language in the film was created specifically for this film by the same man who created the Klingon language for Star Trek, -if the third act seemed rushed it is because I learned that during the making of the film the production team ran out of money so they had to do with what they had. - jim varney who voiced Cookie died before the film was released and people will know him best for his Ernest films and the voice of Slinky Dog in the first 2 toy story films. This was a film that definitely should have had a 15 to 20 extra minutes to help flesh things out!

Back then, general public did NOT want animated action adventure movies. I’m not sure WHAT they wanted, but this is why DW and Disney stopped making those types of movies. There’s been a resurgence, but in 3D. 2D, once 3D was introduced, began to be considered the “immature” option and it really sucks.

It had the misfortune of coming out the same time as Shrek, which was not only fully 3D in an era where that was still novel, but was subverting the traditional hero/hero's journey formula in a specific and irreverent "fuck Disney" way. Disney trying to put a traditional heroes journey up against that, no matter how unique for them, wasn't going to work.

Fun fact - the opening to the film wasn't the original opening. Originally, the film opened off the coast of Iceland with a group of Vikings using the Shepherds Journal to search for Atlantis before being attacked by the Leviathan. The scene was fully animated and was even included in the early trailers but the directors eventually decided it didn't fit with the tone of the rest of the film and replaced it with the sinking of Atlantis. I have literally one and only one issue with this movie; the clumsy way Milo is familiarized with Kida's nickname. Her full name is Kidagakash, and it isn't even hard to pronounce. It's 4 syllables. You're telling me LINGUIST Milo, who's been studying languages all his life, is so phonetically challenged he can't pronounce a name he literally just heard her say? "My name is Kidagakash. But you can call me Kida." "Kida. Okay." There, done

My uncle has a degree in linguistics and despite fluently speaking 3 languages he often still needs to see how a word is written phonetically to understand how it's pronounced. This may stem from his birth language being Spanish in which every letter ALMOST ALWAYS makes exactly one sound. Some people simply can't copy by ear.

@@generalx13 That's fair, but I'll make my point more focused; 1 - Milo is already fluent in Atlantian, having already carried a conversation with Kida earlier on 2 - Milo already has access to the phonetics of the Atlantean language from passages in the Sheppard's Journal 3 - Milo is NEVER shown to struggle with the language in any other instance in the film I can understand that a lot of people say it's done so that kids can become familiarized with Kida's nickname, but this is a moot point because her father already refers to her as Kida and has mentioned her by name in an earlier scene

YES!! I love this movie! It has action, sci-fi, comedy, and fantasy elements rolled into one cult classic of a Disney movie! It has elements of Indiana Jones and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea as well. Hard to believe its 20 years old, and still holds up. This was also Jim Varney's last film as an actor whom sadly passed away from lung cancer on February 10, 2000.

My great uncle met Jim a couple of times, became somewhat friends as they grew up pretty close to each other. His wife at the time was a big fan and he surprised her one night by visiting their home, and when he came in, he stuck his head around the corner and said “Hey, Vern!” Or something like that. I once heard a guy say the bad guy in the film was too “mustache twirling” and generic and it kinda made me laugh cuz those types of ppl existed and still do exist to this day. So the story of Atlantis was told in two dialogues, Timeas and Criteas, by Plato. It was a story handed down through his family and it was originally told to a guy named Solon, who in 600 BC went on a 10 year exile due to political pressure, by a priest in Egypt. When Solon asked when this happened, when Atlantis sank beneath the waves, the priest said bluntly "9000 years ago". So Solon lived 600 BC, that's 2600 years ago. Then add 9000 years to that and you have 11,600 years ago that this happened, according to the priest. It just so happens to coincide precisely with an event called Meltwater pulse 1b, when sea levels rose by hundreds of feet. So if Plato and Solon and the egyptian priest made it all up as some people would suggest then they were astonishingly accurate and knowledgeable with 20th century scientific information.

Actually, MP1B only rose sea levels by around 15 - 20m over a period of approximately 300 years according to the latest research, so it's not hundreds of feet (Source - Am geoscientist who did research on large-scale melt events in the past 100,000 years). That being said, it's still quite enough to have led to the destruction of any coastal settlements in flatter regions. However, when it comes to Plato and the legend of Atlantis, there is now quite convincing evidence that the city referred to was in fact on the volcanic island of Santorini, off the coast of Greece, which erupted in roughly 1650BC. The details in Plato's accounts describing frescos, the patterns on the walls of the buildings in the city, as well as of it disappearing beneath the waves and a foam preventing ships from returning there, are all consistent with this eruption. The island was virtually obliterated in the center, the sea encroached, and there would have been a floating layer of basalt on the surface for miles which would have made sailing there impossible for years. Recent discoveries on the outskirts of the island, under volcanic deposits, show a town of significant size, as well as ruins, mosaics, and artefacts displaying all the hallmarks of significant wealth. Ancient texts name the region as a center of Mediterranean commerce at the time, and even detail the destruction of a powerful trading partner and the impact its loss had across the region on the flow of goods. It is an excellent fit for the legendary origin of Atlantis.

Interesting thing i heard about this film- when Rourke goes down below the surface to where the crystal is located, it turns red cause it senses danger. The crystal saw Rourke as a threat which is why is took Kida to protect itself

I don’t think it’s any coincidence I love this one so much when directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale also directed my other favorite Disney movies (Beauty and the Beast and Hunchback). Their partnership is just dynamite! Atlantis has greater flaws in being a little rough around the edges but still, such vision! I think this one’s a grand old time, and for me much better than Treasure Planet, what it’s often compared to and against.

Oh Atlantis, the movie that single handedly convinced me to dedicate my whole life to animated movies (and pretty ladies- dear god Kida and Sinclair really raised a whole generation of lesbians by merely existing bahahah). The breathtaking score, gorgeous artstyle and stunning animation would already be enough to rank it among one of the greatest Disney movies and yet we also get this wonderful cast of characters, surprisingly mature storyline tackling some complex debates (not that colonisation should be one lmao but hey it's 2021 and European museums still haven't given any of their stolen assets back to the communities they took it from so,, we still got a long way to go), and these iconic scenes that make for a unique viewing experience, such a gem!!!! These animated movies reactions are my favourite from you guys, it's just so great to hear other people geek out about animation techniques and truly appreciate the masterful job that was done on each and every one of these movies !

When this movie was in the theaters, I recall that McDonald's (or some such company) had a big TV campaign pushing the movie, done in the "Atlantean language." I later read that this movie tanked at the box office, and quickly faded away. I have seen the movie, and I came away (sorta) amazed at the level of time and artistry spent on this animated feature. I am SO happy you guys did this one! I have always loved Atlantis. Michael J Fox is one of my favorite actors and especially as a kid when I knew him as Marty McFly and Stuart Little. I know it’s been a while since you’ve done this, but I wanted to let you know there was GOING to be an Atlantis TV show, where they go about dealing with other magical things on earth! The three episodes they did produce was combined into the “sequel” and individually theyre so fun. My storyboarding teacher actually worked on it, I made him tear up when I brought it up. He was so excited for the project, and Mike Mignola used to fax them monster designs every week! My favorite of the three episodes is the one where they deal with these Native American sand coyotes, that only want the stolen pottery to be returned to its rightful place! It’s like, actually really cool. Like reverse Indians Jones. Check it out if you have the time!

Vinny's character is played by comedian Don Novello and about 70% of his dialogue was improvised. The staff had written jokes for him but most of the time he would change the joke between takes or say something that got the story point across but in a much funnier way than the somewhat serious dialogue he was given. It makes his character so much more memorable and realistic.

Btw, I think the creators of "Treasure Planet" were making a second part to it but then it was cancelled by Disney because it didn't do so well at the box office. Because sadly, Disney decided to release it at the time the first Harry Potter movie was in theaters and that movie probably completely overshadowed "Treasure Planet".

So fun fact, they found what is the strongest candidate for the inspiration for Atlantis, Helike. Helike was an ancient Greek Polis founded during the early bronze age and survived until the end of the Classical era. It was the principal city of the Achaea and became the main trading Hub of Ancient Greece and was a center for Culture and History, even participating in the Trojan war. One night in the Winter of 373 Helike was struck by and earthquake that caused it to collapse and sink into a crater. The earthquake in turn set of a Tsunami which Struck Helike and filled the Crater with water. The next day when help from the surrounding area arrived, there were no survivors, this event was one of the worst disasters of Ancient Greece and extremely well documented. People who had been to Helike in the days Prior to the disaster reported strange events occurring; explosions, pillars of Fire, and all of the Animals fleeing the city. It is believed that the people of Helike angered their Patron God the Earthshaking God of the Sea himself; Posiedon. Not 100% on the details of why. Some believe that it involved a statue of posiedon that was meant to be given as a gift to another kingdom. Either he was angry about them giving the statue, or they backed out and he was angry about that. For decades after, all that could be seen of the once great Polis was the very top of buildings and trees, as well as the top of the great statue of Poseidon. Explorers and travelers would talk about seeing it during their travels, until eventually it could no longer to found. Archeologist have since spent 2000 years searching for it under the seas. Until one Greek archeologist decided to translate a single word differently. She translated it to Lagoon and shortly after Helike was found in the middle of a field in 2001. Turns out over the years the lagoon had been filled with sediment and eventually lost. For reference here is a small timeline and evidence. Helike founded Plato Birth: 428/427 Fall of Helike: 373 Atlantis written: 360 Plato Death: 348/347 Both Atlantis and Helike dissapeared over night. Both Atlantis and Helike have Posiedon as their patron. Both Atlantis and Helike were advanced cities. Both Atlantis and Helike were their cultural centers. Though there are still some who disagree and continue to search, the majority of the historical and Archeological community have agreed that Helike is "Atlantis". Also fun fact. They have since discovered that the exact same event has occurred multiple times in the same location. They found an even older city that in the same area that was also distroyed by an earthquake and tsunami about 2000 years prior to Helike. And again even more recently(Within the last 50ish years I think) though there was no city, I believe a weapons depo was distroyed. People in the area reported explosions, and pillars of Fire followed by and earthquake and tsunami. (Can't currently refind the modern event so that may not be 100% accurate)

There was also a sequel movie made of the first 3 episodes of a canceled Atlantis TV series. Another fun fact they got the guy who made the Klingon language to make the Atlantean language and writing system. Also there are whispers of this movie getting the live action treatment.

To me this film could have done being longer or as 2 parts. The first third was really well paced, we got to know all the characters where it mattered and we got a lot of context for it but we spent barely any time exploring Atlantis itself. If made today the film needs to be longer or as a tv series or film series to flesh out the latter half properly. Still one of my personal favourite films and I loved the reaction, Vinnie kills me every time he opens his mouth.

My mom and I went to Atlantis in the Bahamas 6 years ago for a few days. I am not lying when I say it felt like I stepped right into the movie. They had this place called The Dig where you could walk around these tunnels and see fish and lobsters and eels and rays and sharks, and there was a room with all sorts of Atlantean artifacts, including what looked like those vehicles they rode! It was incredible!!

What I really like is that they went out of their way to create a foreign language for the Atlanteans. I actually have an illustrated book of the script with all kinds of notes and details about different scenes, tech, the language - everything. I am proud to have learned some of the words from the Atlantean language. 😊

this story's progression, many of the symbols are also similar to the film and tv serie stargate sg1; some people believe atlantis was an extraterrestrial colony near greece or antartica; supposedly atlantis disappeared when the magnetic poleshift happened several thousands years ago.

I've never been a huge fan of musicals, so as a kid this was my favourite disney movie. Still is. So glad they went with a more serious tone for this movie over singing 😂

I'm inclined to think a few of the animators from Pocahontas were involved in this movie, based on the style of a few characters (like Helga, the blond girl). I love how the characters in this movie were drawn- I hope Disney makes more classicly animated pictures in the future 😔

Good old _Atlantis: The Lost Empire._ The first time I watched it, I got a huge laugh when I instantly recognized the voice of Helga Sinclair as Claudia Christian, who played Commander Ivanova on _Babylon 5,_ an absolutely fantastic (and criminally under-recognized) show I have loved since it aired in the '90s. There was also the hilarity of comparing Milo Thatch to Daniel Jackson from _Stargate._ And the fact that Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, is the voice of the King of Atlantis. In fact, this film is an absolute treasure trove for sci-fi fans.

For the longest time I always thought that Tommy Lee Jones voiced Roarke, but then I found IMDB existed. Non the less, this was the Disney movie that I watched the most as a kid. More people need to recognize the greatness of this under appreciated film.

Atlantis, iron giant and treasure planet were my fav 3 movies of all time growing up, literally wore out the iron giant and Atlantis VHS tapes and lost the cases for all of them as well as most of the Disney movies we had, and the treasure planet main theme is one of the best film scores of all time imo.

Atlantis, Treasure Planet, and potentially Black Cauldron (though that movie would need a little work) suffered the most from coming out at the wrong time. I gotta say, we were spoiled in the early 2000s, as we started demanding 3D movies and shunning 2D movies. Looks like Atlantis bombed mostly because of Shrek, of all things. If those three were released even a decade ago, I think they would have been huge hits. Lately, children's animation has gotten much more mature in general, as people start to take it seriously as more than simple entertainment or educational material. Black Cauldron's dark themes would be much more at home now than in 1985. We still like musicals, of course, but if a movie doesn't have a song, children will still watch it.

Black cauldron didn't need any extra work. Several sections of the completed film were destroyed by the new people who were running Disney at the time and so the version of the movie that we see is incomplete because it's what's left after they literally ripped up the film. Imagine the months worth of work destroyed in a minute

Such an underrated movie is there more they made a sequel film which is actually the first three episodes of a series based on the movie but because of the movies low input they decide to make it straight to video film but I don't know if you want to watch it and fun fact the voice of the Atlantic King is Mr Spock himself the late great Leonard needmore.
