It bombed pretty bad because Disney didn't want to make any more 2D movies and actively boycotted the sales. They barely did any promotion for this movie at the time, and advertised it really badly in terms of themes etc. It was barely in stores, which sucks, because this movie was Clements and Musker's dream project for two decades or so and it really was done so masterfully. I guess Disney already pulled the plug before even giving this movie a second in the sun. And still, I haven't met a single person who watched this movie growing up and didn't love it! I for one fucking adore this movie, it's such a cornerstone of my youth and a wonderful, wonderful film. And the score remains iconic.

Yeah, Disney are dicks. Clements and Musker wanted to make this for years. So Disney told them to make some movies Disney wanted. They did, and did it well, so Disney finally let them make this. But then sabotaged it every step of the way. Which makes no sense because if they had supported it and endorsed it properly it would've just been another hit for Disney. They did something similar with Strange Magic. It was a passion project of George Lucas, he "wanted a movie for his daughters". (Idk why he thought girls can't enjoy Star Wars or something, but whatever) When Disney bought Lucas Arts for Star Wars, George sold with one of the conditions being they finished this movie. So they shuffled it off to one of their barely related side studios, barely bankrolled it, it went through *years* of development hell, and when it was finally released basically set it up to bomb. I remember only seeing trailers for it when I watched midnight tv while dog-sitting for my grandparents. And forget merchandising. Which again is stupid, because its about a fairy princess that teaches herself how to fight and be a badass after getting her heart broken. What little girl, or boy, wouldn't find that awesome? And want their own Marianne doll, and play sword, and wings, and whole costume.

Personally I watched it when I was a kid and I understood none of it, because it's actually a very mature story and generally the tone and the phasing are also different then the average disney movies. I watched it again when I was 14 and literally cried though. What a gem!

I swear Jim and Silver's growing relationship is one of the most realistic and heartfelts ever, and they're not even related by blood. I wish Disney would focus on other kinds of relationships, not just romance. I mean sure, this movie has it, but it's not the priority.

Treasure Planet was a passion project by Ron Clements and John Musker. Disney promised they could make it if they worked on other projects first, which they did. But because of the cost of the 3D elements at the time, Disney wanted to discourage them from asking to do it again so they sabotaged it - it was barely advertised and when it was, they spoilt the ending (which is petty and childish).

They also sabotaged it by deciding to release it a couple weeks after Harry Potter: Chamber of Secrets and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Based on all the factors, it was doomed to bomb.

Fun fact about the animation on Silver: When testing how to combine both 2D and 3D animation they took an old clip of Hook from Peter Pan, reanimated it, but instead of his hook hand they replaced it with a 3D robotic arm similar to Silver. It actually looked pretty cool.

There are actually multiple video essays on youtube about this movie and its production. Definitely worth watching. Disney didn't even want to make the movie, much less for it to succeed. But we don't really care what the higher-ups think anyway. I'm glad the directors eventually got the green light. This movie is great and one of my favourites.

Say what you want about Disney's early 2000's films, whether you like them or not, but I LOVE that they went in a different direction than the Renaissance! Some were misses but this, Atlantis, and Lilo and Stitch were definite hits! Jim and Silver's relationship is the highlight of this film for me ; its just so different and well done!

Hhh, one amazing detail about treasure planet in general, is that the actual planet is all entirely made of metal. If you look at all of the mushrooms that grow on the planet, those are all types of mushrooms that grow on metal! The attention to detail in this movie is beyond the charts, and Disney completely screwed this wonderful movie and its team over ESPECIALLY with the marketing for the movie. But that's nasty Disney for you.

Treasure Planet is one of my favorite animated movies of all time. I remember seeing it in theaters in 2002 and absolutely loving it. I always thought it was weird that this movie didn't do well here in the US. in early 2003 me and my family moved to Mexico for a short time and I was very surprised to find out that even though the movie was not successful here in America it was actually very popular in Mexico at the time.

I wouldn't say this was revolutionary 3D animation when this came out, this was the time Disney was shutting down their traditional 2D animation department because it was expensive and the wider audiences preferred to watch the more fascinating and relatively economical to produce 3D movies that came out in 2001 (Shrek, Monster's Inc, etc). It was definitely more of the experimental passion projects along the likes of Titan A.E. They reused Deep Curve in production, the tech Disney developed for the 1999 Tarzan movie that allowed 2D elements to interact with a "painted" 3D environment. If you want to say revolutionary, Toy Story came out in 1995. All that said, this is still my favorite and definitely still one of the best Disney films that came out, regardless of how well it did in the theaters. There just isn't a lot to not like or nitpick from 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Such an underrated gem! This movie used a program called Deep Canvas for all their backgrounds, which creates a 3D environment that the animators can move the frame in order to mimic real-life camera moves. They had used it for Tarzen when he "surfs" the trees and vines, but used it for much more of it here (notably everything in the ship). The thing is, it was very expensive to do because you had to hire the 2D animators AND hire the technicians to run the Deep Canvas programs. This is still the most expensive traditionally animated film ever made. So the reason we don't have any more Disney animated movies that look like this is... money.

According to the bonus features on the dvd, the animation was 70/30. Meaning 70 percent was 2d while 30 percent was cgi (it might be the other way around I don't remember). :) And the ship was named after the author of Treasure Island and the planet was a mixture of 18th century England (when the book takes place) with Sci-Fi elements.

Yeah What i thought was great about treasure planet was that it broke the Disney cycle of having dead fathers/parents and just pointed out that Jim's father left/abandoned their family instead and the different levels of trust issues and trauma that such actions cause different to losing ones parent to death etc.

My parents took me to the premier of this movie at a theater that host special events after the viewing. Not only did I fall in love with this movie but the whole experience I was able to have. I felt such a deep connection to the movie that the themed event that happened afterwards truly brought me into the world I had just watched. This movie has stuck with me ever since, I even have it on vhs still! great reaction! and interesting to notice the different art elements that are pointed out. I am not very familiar with all that so it's great to learn about it!

I LOVED this movie when it came out! I remember watching the teaser trailer with Jim diving backwards on the sky board and was immediately hooked (the pov, dynamic animation, etc. and proceeded to daydream about sky boarding myself the same way for months lol). One of my favorites and certainly one of the most original reinterpretations. I loved the design, animation, dynamism and conceptual art...just beautiful & imaginative. Loved the combo of old 1700s style with futuristic. And of course Jim and LongJohn's relationship. One of Disney's Best! Still can't believe it did poorly when it first came out smh...No account for taste.

The 3d shots where there is camera movement used a technique called deep canvas where they use a full 3d model and they can play a clip back and forth so they can slowly add drawings on top of the 3d. Its one of the most expensive ways to animate in a 2d film. You can look up on how they made Tarzan with it behind the scenes to get a good example of what it does.

Just wanted to highligh the point that this movie was made with the idea of helping guys going thru their teenage age, maturing, father issues and everything cuz Disney saw how those storylines were always pointed to young girls. For treasure planet The animators took Deep Canvas, a technology which they had initially developed for Tarzan (1999), and came up with a process they called "Virtual Sets" wherein they created entire 360 degree sets before they began staging the scenes. They combined this process with traditionally-drawn characters in order to achieve a "painted image with depth perception" and enabled the crew to place the camera anywhere in the set and move it as they would manoeuvre a camera for a live-action film. In order to test how a computer-generated body part (specifically John Silver's cyborg arm) would mesh with a traditionally animated character, the crew took a clip of Captain Hook from Peter Pan (1953) and replaced his arm with the cyborg arm. With a budget of $140 million, it was at the time the most expensive traditionally animated film ever made.

The way they animated the backgrounds is the same way with Tarzan, they made their own software that lets you paint on a 3D wire mesh of the background so that it remains consistent when it moves in 3D space amd at the same time retain the painterly feel of the backgrounds.

Re-watching a lot of the older animator reacts, and remembered this one. Treasure Planet is probably my #1 Disney movie for one major reason: it's the first animated film young me ever saw that reflected something I experienced in my childhood. In most Disney films, a missing parent is basically dead. This is the first and only one where not only is the parent alive, but they are actively shown leaving of their own free will. It resonated so deeply with me at 12, and I watched this movie over and over and over again. Plus, the characters are just amazing as hell.

This film had an extensive development history, with John Musker and Ron Clements (the directors) having pitched it back in the 80s; they only got it approved after their work with both “The Little Mermaid” and “Hercules” was a success… in addition, this film both came out at an inconvenient time for 2D style animation (as 3D was all the rage) AND wasn’t given the best advertising either. If it came out either in the 90s or even the 2010s I reckon it could’ve been more successful even with the style (and hopefully the balance between CGI and 2D would have been better-done).

I was requesting for this movie for a long time, thank you for finally reacting to it. This movie is an underrated masterpieces. This is also one of the rare movie where main antagonist has some human emotions. I liked how although Silver started to feel attached to Jim but that didn't change his purpose of claiming the treasure. Starting this we finally started to get to see more depth fully antagonist, at least in DreamWorks like Kung Fu Panda movies. Also I really enjoyed Brush's analysation on the mix 2d & 3d, I was just waiting for this analysis. Please react to Brother Bear, Legend of the guardians: owls of Ga'Hoole and The Adventures of TinTin. You'll enjoy these as much as Treasure Planet. Also a minor remainder, if you ever watch Journey to the center of the earth 1&2 then remember the landscape, the giant mushroom (especially Ben's place).

I had grown up with the Muppet Treasure Island version being my favorite, but I really loved the imagination and creativity that went into this adaptation. And as funny and iconic as Tim Curry is in the Muppet's, this one gave more depth and character to Jim and his relationship with Silver.

There’s a double feature films that’s underrated as well, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Journey to the Mysterious Island; both starring Josh Hutcherson.

I’m pretty sure Captain flint was never in it for the money. He was in it for the murder and violence of it. And then he played the last practical joke after his death. Leaving clues to his treasure, but destroying it right once they find it.

I was fortunate enough to find this movie as soon as it came out. I was young, but it was one of my favorites. I had no idea how slept on it was until I was older. Got to show this movie to a lot of friends and all of them agree it is fucking incredible.

The film uses technology called Deep Canvas for the backgrounds which was developed for Tarzan, another film heavily developed by Glen Keane, who does lead animation on Silver in this film. Deep Canvas is fascinating in its own right lol. Notably tho Keane was also lead animator on Rattigan in The Great Mouse Detective (1986!) which has a particular clock tower sequence where the environment is entirely cgi rendered and Keane animates the character within a shot where the camera tracks through a 3d space. Lasseter and Keane actually attempted a pilot short adapting Where The Wild Things Are where they were championing this concept of 2d traditionally animated characters in a 3d rendered environment, but it didn't really get off the ground in earnest for fifteen, twenty years and even then never truly took off into its full potential imo. Treasure Planet is the culmination of many decades of techniques at their finest capacity at the time and another film that has that kind of computer assisted traditional animation around the same time was Princess Mononoke and what Studio Ghibli was doing with computers in the early 2000s and still used Deep Canvas-like 3d painting techniques in their films thru the 2010s but in a convergent evolution type way haha. Anyway I believe that's why those shots in this film and others stand out so well because these master animators can anchor their characters in a 'real' space and produce far more cinematic and volumetric shots when they want to swing the camera around like that. Think of the iconic James Baxter dance sequence in Beauty and The Beast (1991) where the ballroom is a space the camera sweeps through, except in treasure planet there is also another artist that has literally painted the background and the computer can kind of guess what those brushstrokes look like from other angles and in-between them accordingly.

I'm months late to this, but I do want to drop a comment in here because of all the references to the 3D and 2D combination. Which was a serious topic when making the movie. There was a 'making of' documentary a while back, and they actually tested the 3D arm by mapping it over Captain Hook, from their Peter Pan movie, which was a great bit of test footage to see in action. It's genuinely fantastic how much work they put in before they actually even started animating the main movie.

Disney has done Treasure Island a couple of times before; in the late 50's, and Muppet Treasure Island (my personal favorite) with Tim Currey as Long John Silver.

Btw, the creators of this movie were making a second part to this but then it was cancelled by Disney because this movie didn't do so well at the box office. Because sadly, Disney decided to release this at the time the first Harry Potter movie was in theaters and that movie probably completely overshadowed this movie.

A recent 2d/3d merge movie that'll be great for Christmas is Klaus on Netflix it's stunningly well done especially with lighting Love this film especially for how hard the creators had to try to get the movie made, Disney pushed so many projects including Hercules on them to do in order to get it

Silver is kinda cool and complicated character. He is charachter who represent "Father" but also "Villain", like Silco in Arcane. And also, he didnt get horrible death like other Disney villain characters.

This was the passion product of two disney directors or animators that were basically the reason for so many box office hits. Disney finally let them do the project, but then disney did not advertise the movie at all. And when they did advertise it, they spoiled the entire movie in stuff like McDonald's commercials so nobody saw a reason to see it

Hi! So what Disney was using is this programme they developed called Deep Canvas, where the 2D animations are propped up in a 3D world. They would have the world sculpted and then digitally painted on by traditional painters so that a still rendering would look like a painting. A similar thing can be done with objects and characters but they don't look like part of the 2D characters unless they're given hand drawn outlines (auto generated isn't natural enough) and have faked smears. A big trap is trying to add more complex textures or shading to the 3D elements than the 2D. You can see some of it in Mulan late in the training scene when they train with sticks because the camers goes a little too skew and it starts to reveal that they are just cutouts. They also painted two sides of buildings and then 'folded' them in 3D to make the perspective move with the camera angle while still looking hand painted. In Tarzan they used it extensively, painting on invisible 3D shapes in order to give a 2D texture to a 3D space when he surfs the trees. Because it passes so fast you can't easily tell. In Emperor's New Groove they got the hang of making 3D objects look like 2D animation like the rolling log before the waterfall. In Atlantis they failed at the incorporation by only making their high tech thingies 3D. Hunchback had some obviously 3D simplified crowds but the buildings were done beautifully. And then in Treasure Planet they basically perfected Deep Canvas for backgrounds and objects, using flat-shaded 3D backgrounds everywhere except still shots from one angle, along with 2D characters (some with 3D elements). The only janky parts to me are the whales, mostly because they were given overly complex textures and you can kind of tell by the brushstrokes that the textures are all on the same scale, just different distances. Sadly Disney sabotaged Treasure Planet's marketing so they could move to 3D so we never got to see what it could have become. The Deep Canvas technicians are currently employed as overpaid projector technicians for the Disney parks to avoid them defecting to other studios and bringing their knowledge of the tech with them. Most 3D programmes are advanced to the point where you could do this sort of stuff, but the art of making 2D and 3D interact is lost with the programme.

This masterpiece was supposed to get a tv series and John Silver was going to come back and help Jim. But we didn't get that, cause Disney wants to shove this under the rug like it doesn't exist. They're still salty at how expensive this was to make, I think. Y'know. Since they're so hurting for money and all. Just to let you know, the narrator at the beginning was the late great Tony Jay, who voiced many characters, and also Frollo from The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. I do like the fact that Mr. Arrow let both Jim and the Doctor vent their frustrations before reeling them in, telling them to watch their mouths. XD

I believe this movie uses a similar technique as one that was shown in a Making Of Documentary for The Emperor's New Groove. Where some of the models are still 2d and other models are 3d with 2d art-work drawn over it. The Emperor's New Groove is also a really good movie btw. For me it ranks up there as one of the best Disney comedy movies.

Yes!!! My thoughts exactly. For a 2000 movie the textures of the dinosaurs skin and the fur of the lemurs are incredible. And the behind the scenes makes the movie even more magical. Oh and the soundtrack!!😍 especially the crossing the desert music!!
