James and Ninetailedbrush are reacting to another awesome horror movie The Purge (2013). This movie is a freaky future of America as people spend 12 hours essentially murdering each other! This movie was an interesting idea and horror concept and incredibly well explored. Enjoy this first time watching reaction!

Honestly I'm really glad it turned out this way because when the crazy people came up to the house at first, it really put into perspective how terrifying it is everywhere else and opens up the imagination for what could be happening that night aside from what was shown on the camera footage during the credit sequences. Then the second one turned it up to 11 and put us right into the middle of it.

Blumhouse doing what Blumhouse does best. Really cool movies at a shoestring budget, but still with massive production value. Really smart choices, settings, stories, all to reduce production costs that do not affect the actual quality of film, and often makes the production crew seek out solutions that end up making the movie so much better.

I love old films that have the narration " in (random place name) 2022" bc to them 2022 was ages away in the future, but now it's actually 2022 and we've caught up to those words it's scary and funny how I get so curious about the concept of time 😭 It's the same with age. When I watched a film when I was 7 and the protagonist in the film was 16, I'd say "wow she's so grown up", and then irl when I turned 16 and rewatched the film I realised how I was now similar to that protagonist 😭

It's really laughable, but I think the movie brings that into question too, how banal people's interest in ending someone's life can be. The series of films and also the show shows at all times that this policy of a purge day to contain the annual violence of individuals is really pathetic, because human beings are pathetic, they are hateful for stupid reasons and will never know how to deal with their inner demons, instead, prefer to kill.

Thank you so much for saying this one doesn't get enough credit; I always hear people not liking this one, but I absolutely loved it! When I first saw it, it blew my mind, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time; it was different from movies I had seen before watching it. I haven't seen many home invasion-type movies, especially the ones that everyone knows about, like Strangers, Hush, etc. Everyone tends to say they prefer the second one over this one, but I guess I'm in the minority. I loved the character development in this one over the next one. You can explore their motivations and reasoning, morality shifts, etc. And in the second one, it seems more glossed over. If you are into character building and story setup, this is the one for you. If you enjoy jumping to the action quicker, you probably prefer the next one over this one. I, however, do like both. It's just I find myself rewatching this one more. I have yet to see the rest of the series beyond the 2nd one, though, simply for the fact that I was buying movies too quickly and was trying to build a particular collection of films first, but eventually, I'll get them and watch them all. I say continue with the series and enjoy the crazy ride. And for reference, "slow-burn" films don't bother me like they seem to do for others. I watch primarily slow-burn indie movies, some that don't make sense to me, but they all are unique for their own reasons. I'm making this point because I've heard people call this one a slow-burn. And technically, it is compared to its action-packed counterpart, but I love it.

I remember when this movie first came out. I was taking a college sociology class and I asked my instructor if she thought something like this would be possible in the US. She naturally said no, and up until a few years ago I would have agreed. terrifying times we're living in.

It's weird but from the outside, even though this is unlikely, if it did happen, I could only imagine it happening in the US and some developing countries. I can't imagine it happening in European countries for instance and a European government were to try and pull that trick, it's more likely that the government would get purged, not the people. But to be honest with you, the US is a messed up place in many areas that this kind of thing isn't unthinkable, but it's still unlikely.

This is one of my favorite horror concepts. 🔥 I'm with James, it's not crazy to think someone could've/did think of the idea of the Purge IRL. It does trouble me a little when people refuse to engage with Dystopian future movies on grounds of 'well, that'll never happen' or 'this is anti-whatever propaganda' though. (only a few mins into the vid. That's just a general note.)

Most terrifying horror is either the Lovecraft-type, the nightmares in each one's mind, or the realistic type that hides behind dystopia. That *could* be real, right now. For me, the latter is the worst, because we know our history and what humans are capable of. You *know* that there were, and still are, people out there who would absolutely support sth like a purge and/or participate.
@shesalilsapphicokay
@shesalilsapphicokay Жыл бұрын
@@ichmeiner4531 IDK really anything about Lovecraft. I've heard of him(?) though. I agree with the last two sentences. At the same time, I've seen people dismiss Dystopian future movies without considering the implications they have for either our society or their beliefs. As I heard someone put it the other day: maybe *you* wouldn't take that line of thinking that far, but someone else might.
@ichmeiner4531
@ichmeiner4531 Жыл бұрын
@@shesalilsapphicokay ooooh, go read Lovecraft! His horror is often not an exact description, but rather lets you insert YOUR deepest, darkest fears and monsters. Absolutely recommended! Yeah, some people will always shut their minds off to the atrocious things humans are capable of. For some, it's how they cope with the cruelties of our world. Others are ignorant. The rest of them is simply too dumb. If you know someone that belongs in either of those groups, explain the 'The Third Wave' - experiment to them (look it up, I won't spoil it). There's also a German movie from '08 that took the idea of that real life experiment and put it into a late 90's school setting. And it has some great acting. It's called' the wave', but I don't know if it's available elsewhere.

I mean 'The Purge' is really just the logical application of consequentialism. ''X creates a net positive for society. Therefore, we will infringe on human rights to apply X'' This is no different than covid lockdowns/mandates, and any other event in history where a reduction in disease rationalizes eugenics, or where the nation benefitting from discriminating against a targeted class is rationalized. It's incredibly realistic and the logic we deal with on a daily basis, and throughout history. The truth is that if a purge was pushed and normalized by the government over 50% of the public would support it.

i only have one major problem with this movie. they set up the idea that crime is only committed because of anger or boredom when in reality it's mainly desperation. One of the most creative ideas ever conceived for film. A suspense drama-thriller with social commentary is so out of the box. The psychology, action and horror truly compliment it. Committing whatever crime possible or just directly taking out your frustration on select people you hate in 12 hours is scary stuff. 4 of the 5 films took place in the 2020s. But i had forgot which part of the decade (2022 ?!, holy crap). Hooked in since the first film, it had me thinking about how much further could the story go in potential sequels. Also it had me pondering about the state of our nation and it's people in power. Not too many would agree with this purge, me being one of those people.

yes, since it happened while the purge was taking place, so during those 12 hours the SA was legal :( but that is what the government is looking for, since many of the people who suffered from a crime in a purge or someone they know, they end up joining, it's a snowball that gets bigger and bigger (even in the following movies, younger people join), so if the child tells someone, maybe in the next purge someone take revenge on dad🤔

It gets way better the more you watch the series . I personally like the second one. You see more chaos through out the city. And the third one also has an interesting plot too. Keep watching them ! 😁

I was looking for reactions to these movies the other day and now this one popped up! lol I'm in the minority of thinking this was a really good movie when it came out. I thought the concept, execution, and acting was great. It was different from a lot of horror movies at the time and created an interesting dystopian future. Both the sequels and the TV series do a good job of building on the Purge universe.

The first one focuses on one house and the family that lives there and their choices, the second, third, and fourth focus on neighborhoods and their unity to survive

I concur with everyone else with the comments. This series gets better with each entry and that's because there are so many angles to explore the Purge from. So, the series can actually follow people from different socioeconomic backgrounds with each entry, which keeps it fresh.

This movie set a precedent at the time of release. It made 89 million dollars at the box office on a budget of only 3 million. Compare to After Earth was released the same year; made 243 million dollars on a budget of 130 million.

I think what the movie was trying to convey was "can you sacrifice one life in order to save multiple in the heat of the moment?" The purge is a night where all of humanity is thrown out the window and you're free to do whatever you want without consequence. Power and freedom corrupts and can turn just about anybody into a monster because that's just human nature. I doubt anybody can legitimately and honestly say that if they had that level of freedom for 12 hours, they would still behave like a normal person, that there wouldn't be a certain level of temptation to do at least one thing. Not saying murder is the first thing to jump to, but theft, raiding, vandalism, etc. All that freedom and temptation is there to do whatever you want with no punishment at all. That being said, when confronted with that level of animosity and lawlessness, can you really bring yourself to throw an injured man seeking refuge back out to the wolves? Does that turn you into a heartless monster like everyone else participating in the Purge? Or do you keep your humanity at the risk of your family? Sure, the premise makes sense and it might not be the absolute best movie of all time or showcase the point its trying to make. Or maybe I'm just looking into it way too much. But it's just how I view the movie and it's concept.

The only thing i took from this movie the first time i watched it was how most of that shit wouldn't have happened if the son hadn't let that stranger into the house. I get it, he had a kind heart, but he basically traded his father for that stranger, and now he has to live with that choice. If it were me, as soon as those purge horns started blaring, i would have had a nice long 12 hour sleep. (tho that would make for a boring movie admittedly)

I really liked this one when I first saw it few years ago, then I lost my interest for some reason but after some time I watched all movies again and I really like them. It’s such a cool, unique and scary yet also insane concept that may happen in really desprate times (don’t forget what happened in Germany after WW I during great depresion when people were truely desprate and vengful). You should really watch all these Purge movies (all of them have something new how to exprese this one night madness. BlumHouse truely has some of the best modern horror movies (yes few of their movies are bad but mostly they have so good horror movies with The Black Phone being their last masterpiece which I can recommend to you).

The implication for the neighbor's 'buying' spiel was implied to be because, with the security system's not being all they're cracked up to be, they felt ripped off ^A normal annoyance at any other time, but during a life-or-death Purge Night? It's as they felt he wanted them to die, and that was his way of doing it; so they got 'even' for this (perceived) slight.

idk why but these movies make me very anxious haha whenever I see them I end up thinking that our society tends to be so surreal that I don't see it impossible for something like this to happen in the future, people are getting crazier every time lol, btw YOU HAVE to watch the following movies, in them the story about the Purge as a political and social problem is addressed more but they are still scary hahaha

Just look at humanities past. What humans were (and still are) capable of doing. In Germany, we said 'never again', but yet we have people, not only old folks, young, too, who truly believe that the Nazis were good and no Jewish person was killed. Suddenly, it becomes less and less impossible that shit like in the movie won't happen in our lifetimes.

This is definitely not impossible to happen in America knowig how insatiable people are.. Everyone is aiming to seek freedom and keep tracking of their right.. Its just a matter of time for some sociopath government officials to suggest this.. And what makes me scared is knowing that there will be people who will agree and gets excited for this concept to become the solution to crime, unemployment and overpopulation.. Its crazyyy..
@Omegafire17

@@Nana-hj7xl The worst part is, though I'm American and have no love for all this 'craziness' of my own country, it really doesn't feel unrealistic. Even if not in a fashion exactly like the Purge, America does feel like it's primed to implode because of something sooner or later... yet while the radicals and extreme people may have it coming, what about the mass of ordinary, decent folk who were/are already bemoaning their country/world's state? It's not fair to be at the 'mercy' of a situation others before us collectively caused, but can't really escape... yet that's just how it is, and we can only endure and try to be better. It's a real twisted example of self-inflicted tragedy, I think
