Big Jack Horner's depiction in the movie is weirdly fitting. As the nursery rhyme "Little Jack Horner" was allegedly written to mock the real-life Thomas Horner, who was, according to the history books, a greedy, lying, swindling land dealer.

It makes sense. Unlike most movies that use tension as filler, this movie shows that she was hurt in more ways than one. But she doesn’t overreact and become evil in many ways. Instead, she understands that it was a daunting thing for puss and the fact that he is willing to show vulnerability means he’s changed. Also, it could be that she was physically there, but not truly there in an emotional sense.

The best moments that touch to the core: 1. The Puss said that he had never been touched by blade. Death is the first to wound him. This is both a metaphor and another indicator of how much more serious things have become. 2. When a Wolf puts coins on his eyes, this is an obvious reference to Charon and many other burial traditions. 3. The fact that the mother bear is ready to do everything for the sake of the desire of the Goldie, even though she wants another family for herself... I melted.

This movie is simply spectacular. It has gorgeous animation, top notch fight choreography, great characters, a great arc for Puss, and one of if not the best DreamWorks antagonists ever. I like how, at the start, Puss was bragging about having "never been touched by a blade." So the moment Death was actually able to cut him, Puss became a scared, anxious mess. It's the moment he realized he's not invincible after all.

A good twist makes you go back and realize all the things you missed 1. Death appears before his fight with Puss in the bar. When the crowd does the wave during the giant fight, he is watching from an alley in the top left. 2. The doctor/barber/veterinarian blows out a candle to symbolize death. Just before Death first reveals himself to Puss, a candle goes out. 3. Death putting coins on his eyes is reference to ancient cultures putting coins on the eyes of the deceased. The ancient Greeks were most famous for this tradition. They believed you needed to pay a ferryman, Charon, to cross the Styx River into the afterlife. Otherwise you'd be stuck in purgatory/limbo. 4.Certain dialogue also alludes to the wolf's true identity: Puss: Puss in Boots laughs in the face of death, right, bounty hunter? Death: So, I've heard. 5. The wolf being Death also explains his supernatural powers, such as, being able to teleport and not showing up on the map.

this movie is such a gift for us. The animation is incredible. I get the inspiration from spider-verse, but the paintbrush effect makes it sooo unique. Also I love how the story and the characters are handled. we spend the first ten minutes conscructing puss' character but once he's on that last life and death is finally able to touch him, with a blade nonetheless, all of that building just collapses and puss is left destroyed, terrified for his life. When I saw that scene, my god was I on the edge of my seat gasping. not even talking about the panic attak scene, such a good portrait , or every time you hear that whistle and death appears on screen, it just gave me chills. Man I wish there were more animated movies as bold and mature as this one

Heya ! Here are some spanish notes if you had curiosity ! 2:37 Cordova and Del Mar are actual cities and municipalities of Spain ! (Only that is Cordoba and not Cordova) 8:55 The song that plays here it's a Bolero called "¿Por qué vas?" (Why do you leave?) from the Guatemalan singer Gaby Moreno. It's a cry for someone that's leaving, that could be Puss crying for himself 'cause he choosed to retire, leaving the legend behind "Perrito" is a way to say "Lil Dog" or "Doggie" actually, there's something cute about how they call Perrito all the way in the movie: At first, they just call him "Perro" that's just straight up "Dog" ( 13:08 No affection) but later, they add what we call "sufijo apreciativo" or "appreciative suffix" if you will, that's a little addition to a noun that's more affective and close (Example: Gato, Gatito) and this is a proof that they started to like him more and more as the adventure goes ( 26:31 With affection) [Edit: This is also called "sufijo diminutivo" or "diminutive suffix" to refer to something small or tiny, and since Perrito is in fact, a puppy, it's logical to refer him like this. But I do prefer my first observation 'cause it's more wholesome] 18:42 "Ay, que miedo" means "Geez, how scary" 24:21 "Gatito Blade" Means "Kitty Blade" 24:28 When Puss throws the stick sword, he says "Vaya con Dios" that is a way to say "Godbye" or "Go with God" It's a phrase mostly used by old people to bless their beloved ones when they went out of home or when they get separated to reach their destinies safe and sound. This is used not just in Spain but in Latin America as well, thanks to the colonialism that brought christianity here by Spanish people themselves 26:06 What Kitty shouted to the three bears when they stole the map was: "I'm going to turn you into bathroom's carpets" that could be a reference about the Mama Bear on the first Shrek movie, that had that horrific fate 27:00 Santa Coloma it's also a real municipality of Spain, but they are many of them with a different last name (Santa Coloma de Gramanet, Santa Coloma de Farnés, Santa Coloma de Queralt, etc) 37:53 "Bien, muy bien" means "Well, very well" (JUST SSSSSASSY) 38:46 "Hasta la muerte" could mean "Until the death" or "To the death" And a funfact about the Spanish translation is that Goldilocks and the Three Bears have an Argentinan accent instead of an Australian [Edit: Now I figured out that it was in fact British instead of Australian, my bad 😅] Hope you learned something useful today, homies ! My theory is they wanted to upgrade death from the simple scythe to a more modern weapon of that time period so they gave him 2 sickles that he could combine into his “scythe” staff

I like how many references there are to the Wolf being Death before the actual reveal. Like when he asks for Puss’s autograph and taps the word “dead” over and over for the signature, the skull pattern on his face, and his use of sickles. But the best one is when he does the “I’m watching you” gesture, he places two coins over his eyes, which is an Ancient Greek custom. The coins would be placed over the eyes of the deceased so they would be able to pay Charon, the Ferryman of the Dead, and make it into the Underworld Also, complete side note, but making Death be Brazilian and the actor they got to play him just makes him go that much harder. I really hope we see more of him in future movies, but not to an overused degree. Keep him intimidating, maybe have him show up during Puss’s final appearance to aid him in a final stand before Death finally takes him. I think it would be kinda cool to see Puss and Death become homies by the end

When Death shows up in the fight where Jack is using his crossbow, the rocks around him make the shape of a skull as well- Side not, I think the coins on the eyes are a common mistake, its actually supposed to be coins on the tongue- but the eye's thing is in pop culture now and it looks great here. Another good moment- when the doctor/barber/etc tells Puss he died, he blows out a candle- in the bar after the bartender leaves a candle on the chandelier goes out, then we hear the whistling and death shows up. Finally I love the bit that death has Puss's lives crossed out on one of his sickles- and its the same sickle that puss blocks with his gatito blade and lets push him into reach of his hat and sword. Other good moments include seeing the reflection of Puss' eyes in the sickles during the first fight, with death's face visible behind them, and then death's eyes being reflected by them in the final fight, with puss visible behind them
@alecLogan
@alecLogan 7 ай бұрын
Two things; when he’s tapping the wanted poster and Puss says outright that he “laughs in the face of death,” he scratches the poster in direct response. Also, the coins on the eyes thing is, itself, not Greek. There was a custom to put payment in the mouth of the dead, but coins on the eyes specifically is closer to a pop culture reference _due to_ that misnomer.

Dreamworks gives us a sequel to a spinoff of a sequel and it's up there with one of the best films they've ever done. We really don't need a Shrek sequel, but if they can pull it off on this level, heck yes I'll see it. They set the bar damn high though. Spiderverse animation style alone won't do it. They are going to need a story as good as they had for this.

Death (aka The Wolf or Lobo) is without a doubt one of DreamWorks best but also terrifying antagonists in years and Wagner Moura (a Brazilian actor) who is best known Pablo Escobar in _Narcos_ really knock it out of the park. Interestingly despite his actions in the film Death is by no means a villain as he has a sense of honor and nobility, as his main reason for pursuing Puss in the first place was to punish him for arrogantly squandering his eight lives with reckless abandon, concluding from this that it would be best to kill him before he wasted his final life. 🐺🐺 Interestingly, before Puss in Boots meets him at the bar, Death appears in a blink and you miss moment when Puss was battling the Giant where he was in a slight dark corner and compared to the Crowd he was not cheering for Puss but watching him to see if he gets killed and hints of him of his wolf head and sickles were seen on Puss' death card numbers. Finally, Death's quote in Spanish when he was defeated by Puss: _"¿POR QUE DIABLOS FUI A JUGAR CON MI COMIDA?!?"_ translates to _"WHY THE HELL DID I PLAY WITH MY FOOD?!?"_ in English.

5:57 You can see Death during Puss' 8 lives recount. And prior to that, you can hear 8 bells go off during his fight with the giant of Del Mar. 26:06 she basically said she's gonna turn them into bathroom rugs which is a reference to Shrek 1 where another three bears were taken away by Farquaad and the Mother bear was turned into a rug. I'm guessing no one else can Death unless they're near death or at death, hence the end where everyone's lives were in grave danger putting them into a near death experience. Another thing, whether it's intentional or not, I love how Mama Luna put mittens on the cats instead of declawing of them.

But without a doubt the highlight of the film wasn’t the story but the animation as compared to the first Puss in Boots film this gives off a 2D cel shaded look very reminiscent to the visuals seen in _Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse_ and _Arcane_ especially the former as the filmmaker for this film cite Spider-Verse for the visuals in _The Last Wish_ especially during the fight scenes where the animation is drawn in twos.

Okay, the Spanish in this movie. The first entire line in Spanish is from the wolf during the first encounter. When he opens to door to see puss has disappeared, he says, “Run, Run little cat”. Later, when Kitty Softpaws screams a angrily at Goldi when they take the map, she yells, “I will turn you all into Bath Mats”. At the end of the final fight, Death screams in frustration, “Why the hell did I play with my food?” And finally, the last thing puss says to death is, “Hasta la Muerte” or “Until death”. Of course there’s a couple words thrown around so here is a short list of all the ones I caught: Gato - cat Gatito - Kitty or little cat Perro - Dog Perrito - puppy or little dog Lobo - wolf I may think of others, maybe even catch a few more next time I watch it, but overall, loved the reaction and can’t wait to see more.

As a half Chilean American man, I have a couple of notes to add to yours. While you can translate "corre, corre, gatito" to "run, run, kitty," which is a solid translation to English, personally, in this context, I would translate it as "run, run, little cat." The Spanish noun suffix "-ito/a" means "little" in English, and "gatito" also means "little cat." I personally think that's a better translation in this context because la Muerte is calling Puss that in a mocking manner. But neither translation is wrong. When la Muerte screams in frustration to Puss' newfound courage in the face of death, he actually screams, "¡¿POR QUÉ DIABLOS FUI A JUGAR CON MI COMIDA?!" Which means, "WHY THE HELL DID I [GO] PLAY WITH MY FOOD?!" [Yo] fui=I went/did go. The sentence is in the past tense and not the present tense. Also, always=siempre. The term "siempre" is not present in that quote. This also makes sense because he realizes at that point that Puss would have died sooner drunk and alone if he never intervened and toyed with him. And la Muerte doesn't sound like he normally plays with his food. Puss specifically tells la Muerte, "Sí, hasta *la* muerte." In Spanish, when you refer to general concepts like life and death, you need to use a definite article equivalent to the English "the." When you bring up death in general, you say "la muerte" or "the death." When my "Tata," my Chilean grandfather, usually talks to me about life in general, he has a tendency to say it as "the life" in English instead of just "life" because in Spanish, "life" is "la vida." That's basically it on my end. Don't get me wrong. Your Spanish notes aren't really bad. I just thought to give my two cents on it. While we're at it, I have the major quotes off the top of my head: Gato: "Mi casa es su casa." Gobernador: "No, ¡su casa es MI CASA!" Puss: "My house is your house." Governor: "No, your house is MY HOUSE!" Lobo: "Corre, corre, gatito." Wolf: "Run, run, little cat." Gato: "No hablo inglés." Perrito: "¿Hablas español? ¡Yo también! ¿De dónde eres? ¿Te gustan las siestas?" Puss: "I don't speak English." Perrito: "You speak Spanish? So do I! Where are you from? Do you like naps?" Kitty: ¡Suéltalo! Kitty: Let go! Kitty: "¡Ay, qué miedo!" Kitty: "My, how scary!" Kitty: "¡Los voy a hacer a todos alfombras de baño!" Kitty: "I'm going to turn you all into bathroom mats!" Kitty: "¿Adónde fueron ese idiota y su perro?" Kitty: "Where did that idiot and his dog go?" Lobo: "Bien. Muy bien." Wolf: "Good. Very good." Lobo: "¡¿POR QUÉ DIABLOS FUI A JUGAR CON MI COMIDA?!" Wolf: "WHY THE HELL DID I PLAY WITH MY FOOD?!" Gato: "Sí, hasta la muerte." Puss: "Yes, until death." Edit: corrected bathroom quote

@Ethan1715_GD I would like to add another translator's note while I still remember. "[Yo] fui" can also mean "I was" in the proper context. The Spanish verbs "ser" (to be) and "ir" (to go) share the same exact preterite conjugations in Spanish. Yo fui, tú fuiste, él/ella/usted fue, nosotros/as fuimos, ellos/ellas/ustedes fueron. I was, you were (informal), he was/she was/you were (formal), we were, they were/you [guys] were or I went, you went (informal), he went/she went/you went (formal), we went, they went/you [guys] went

*Big Jack:* "What did I do to deserve this?! ... I mean what specifically?" I love how aware Jack is that he's a complete monster. There are no bad characters in this movie, they're all well-written and very enjoyable, but Jack is without a doubt one of my favorites. The award for "Best Antagonist" still goes to Death though...

The pocket full of posies is from the nursery rhyme about the black death The rosies were the red marks of the bubonic plague, while the posies were the flowers plague doctors used to lessen the stench of death all around. The ashes were supposed to represent the cremated bodies of those who died from the great plague, and the falling down meant, well, falling down dead

Something that really intrigues me about the final fight between Death and Puss is that it's a character driven fight, not a story driven fight. Puss is having to deal with the very real possibility of death, both the character and the concept of the end. Death eventually gives up his pursuit of Puss not because he realizes he can't beat Puss, because Death comes for everyone, but because Puss has truly learned to appreciate the life he currently has. The whole reason Death was so pissed off in the first place is that he has had to watch Puss waste all his lives on stupid antics. I just really the Death-Puss arc in this movie.

Another thing I noticed after rewatching it there are some hints that the wolf is death. 1: he doesn’t get a wanted posters, even perro has one. 2: he doesn’t show upon the map like everyone else does, after the fight were jake was holding perro hostage anytime someone holds the map the wolf doesn’t appear on it. 3: this one’s a stretch because it happens fast but when puss first fights the wolf. When the wolf says he loves the smell of fear and grinds the sickles on the ground, lightning flashes and his eyes turn to skulls for a moment

Death was such an amazing character. Puss in boots avoided deaths claws many times, whenever he was at deaths door he had gotten away. And the death whistling is so amazing, the fact that puss in boots fighting back against death shows the will to live, Death has decided he will have puss in boots one way or another regardless if he lives or dies its only a matter of time. And the voice actor sure was good.

Spanish woman here trying to help a little :) 4:21 - Puss says "Holy frijoles". Frijoles are beans. 4:53 - "Gracias" means "Thank you" 5:25 - "Gracias, Del Mar" means "Thank you, Del Mar" (Fun fact: "Del mar" literally means "of the sea". That's why this village is on the coast xD) 10:24 - Puss says "I don't speak English" and Perrito says "Do you speak Spanish?" 13:04 - "Sorry, perro". Literally "Sorry, dog" 18:39 - "Ay, que miedo". It means "Oh, so scary" 24:08 - Kitty calls the dog "Perrito" which means "little dog". 24:19 - Kitty calls her dagger "gatito blade" which means "kitten blade". 24:26 - Puss says "Vaya con Dios, stick blade" which is a little... weird spoken but it means something like "See you next time, stick blade". 24:31 - Again, "perro" = "dog" 25:57 - Kitty says "¡Los voy a hacer a todos alfombras de baño!" which means "I'm going to turn all of you into bathroom rugs!" 26:22 and 26:52 - Again, "perrito" = "little dog" 30:03 - Puss says "Hola". Means "Hello". 27:44 - Wolf says "Bien, muy bien". It means "Good, very good". 38:08 - "Gatito blade" strikes back, lol. As I said before: "Kitten blade". 28:26 - Puss says "Hasta la muerte". That's "To death" so he means "Until death arrives" here. 39:13 - Puss yells "Perrito", you already know what that means. Hope that helps! (If I skipped something, just tell)

I like the "new" very important themes this movie tackled, also having the preverbial balls to make a character like Death and having the main character bleed. There's also, with Goldie apreciating what she already has, in this case a family that may not be biological but loves her to bits. Puss has anxiety, panic attacks cuz he's afraid of dying but death is inevitable, we will all face it but it's best to be ready and calm, not scared. Kitty was dealing with massive trust issues cuz she had been cheated repeatedly but throught started to learn that others DO care about her. Now Jack Horner, heh, I think the message was some people are simply corrupted, we may try and try and try to help them but some are just not salvageable

One thing that I haven’t heard anyone mention is how no one except for Puss noticed Death. I see that is how Death appears each time Puss tried doing something that he has, he appears when Puss gives money, he appears when fighting, and he even appears when reminiscing on the past. He shows up as PTSD for Puss. No one else noticed Death because for them, they don’t have a reason to panic.
