For a feature film adaptation adapting all five books of _The Spiderwick Chronicles_ in one film, it was really well done adaptation and almost on par with the film _Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events._ Freddie Highmore did an amazing performance portraying both Simon and Jared Grace, alongside the vocal performances of Martin Short as Timbletack, Seth Rogen as Hogsqueal and Nick Nolte as the terrifying ogre Mulgarath. Even the VFX of the various creatures and fairies done by ILM and Tippett Studios respectively and the score by the late James Horner was also well done. A part of me did wish it was adapted as two films so it includes all elements from all five books since there were many elements and certain characters such as the dwarfs who work for Mulgarath that were written out in the final film. Fortunately, there is going to be a new Television series of _The Spiderwick Chronicles_ that will premiere on Roku sometime in 2024 and will be more close to the original five books.

I love the film of A series of Unfortunate Events, probably more so than the whole Netflix series. The tone, acting, music and costume design all outshine the show imo. I think because those books were longer, they had a slightly harder job adapting multiple stories into one film than Spiderwick, but I love it regardless. The other iconic Freddie Highmore role for me growing up was in Arthur & the Invisibles. Another story about a boy discovering the secret magical world all around him that an older relative found, that was based off a book series. I also remember a sequel, but it turns out there were two, but for the UK they smushed 2 & 3 together into one, weird. Even stranger was the odd horror film made by the original creator that was like a meta look at the film called: Arthur, malédiction.

@@robertbrookes2000As for _A Series of Unfortunate Events_ I agree I think both the film and Netflix are good but I definitely prefer the film more due to its production design and visuals along with Jim Carrey as Count Olaf. It was unfortunate it didn’t received a sequel due to the work schedule of the actors and also the actors who played the Baudelaire’s aging out of their roles. Would be awesome if Nobu and the girls did a reaction to it and the series, but alas White Noise Reacts is ending next month unless someone wants to run the channel moving forward which is the million-dollar question

Thank you for reacting to this movie, it's one of my favorite childhood films. Few things: 1: The five books from which the movie was based on expands more on the fantastical world round them: how the Elves, instead of sylphs, guard the secrets of faeries, how dwarves live in a nearby quarry, how there's also a river troll between the estate and the goblin camp, and how Mulgarath has a castle in a nearby junkyard. 2: The ending was a bit different in the books; Arthur steps out of the leaves that keeps him from dying and dies in front of Lucinda. 3: I love how Mallory calls Jared "Psycho" and actor Freddie Highmore later plays Norman Bates. 4: There's a sequel series of three books set in Florida (this one is set in New England) where step-siblings help a nixie with a Giant problem. 5: The books are getting a new adaptation. It was finished and meant for Disney+ but it was moved to RokuTV during the strikes.

I hope they do it justice. It's set for 8 episodes. Disney+ already completed the series but then didn't air it so Roku bought the rights or something. Since it was a Disney series, they seem to have done the typical "diversity" changes so the Grace's are mixed race kids which is...whatever, doesn't affect the story, but they also seem to have aged them up or maybe the pics are just aged since they finished filming back in 2021? I'm not sure.

Ah, this is such an underrated classic. I remember arguing with my brother because he had all the cool merch and I didn't. Neither me nor my siblings actually read it, but the movie was based off of a book series written by Holly Black and Tony Diterlizzi, and there was a journal based off of that for kids to "find their own creatures." I always thought of the movie as fantasy, but modern, more muted in its aesthetic, and I remember loving it as a kid. I''m so glad it's getting more attention now. Truly a hidden gem! Also, this storytellers' guild sounds so interesting! I'll be sure to look into it.

I think I might've been one of the people who recommended this film. It was an absolute classic from my childhood. I don't think I even read the whole series, but I did listen to some audiobooks that I'm pretty sure were unabridged, as it included book only plot points like: dwarves who had kidnapped Malory, and a river troll Jared had to escape from. So yeah there was a little more world building the film didn't have time for. But wow I think the film holds up tremendously. The effects look pretty good, I love how the creatures look tangible, like the goblins being a bit frog-like & the fairies camouflaging with flowers. The dual roles of Jared & Simon for Freddie Highmore is done well too, they are portrayed quite differently. And here's a big spoiler that I still remember from the book... In the original end, Arthur Spiderwick chooses to turn to dust after seeing his daughter one last time. Certainly a more bittersweet end than Lucinda going to live with him under the Slyph's spell. While double checking some of this, I found that there was going to be a Disney+ tv adaptation, which whilst it's apparently finished filming, due to cost-cutting it's being handed over to another company 'The Roku Channel', so it does look like it'll still come out. The cast is as follows: Lyon Daniels as Jared Grace Noah Cottrell as Simon Grace Joy Bryant as Helen Grace Mychala Lee as Mallory Grace Jack Dylan Grazer as Thimbletack Christian Slater as Mulgarath Sounds exciting, hope the effects hold up though, as that could easily ruin it.

The movie heavily condensed the already short book series. The five books are under 100 pages each but include Mulgarath and the goblins hiding a fortress in a junkyard, Jared pulling a knife on Mulgarath at Mallory’s fencing tournament, a major faction of elves, and dwarves that build mechanical bugs and trees.

I know this movie back to front and listen to the soundtrack on a daily basis!! I just recently read the books and they were great too! There's a book series called "The Cruel Prince" which is written by the same author, though this one is focused on the Fae and many more creatures in the magical world. It sort of has the same vibe as spiderwick since they mix real word vs magical world. The author has actually said that The Spiderwick Cronicles takes place in the same world as The Cruel Prince, which made my experience reading both so much better, knowing that somewhere, the Grace children walked as do Cardan and Jude from the other series. :)

I loved this movie as a child! There was actually a book series based off the movie I owned though I wasn't interested reading at all as a child so I hardly ever read it but I did like all the drawings that was sometimes in the books. I honestly missed watching this movie, it was super amazingly done.

I havent seen this film in ages. But as soon as I started seeing the young actor for Jared/Simon I knew I recognized him from something else. He's the guy who plays the main character in The Good Doctor. And he was Charlie in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie which had Johnny Depp in it. I had totally forgotten he was in this movie too

I remember seeing this with my quite a bit younger sister at the time, can't remember how old I was but at least mid teens. This was the first film that I realized if blood wasn't red it's ok, as far as a rating goes. I especially remember the one goblin that gets half his head blown off from the ketchup bomb.

13:33 That stone that the boy can see the goblins is a Witches Stone or Hag Stone. It is said that through looking we can see fairies and witches and can bring protection. In Coraline the protagonist used one too to find the souls. The hole in the stone occures because of some kind of corrosion

My brother and i loooooooved this film and the books when we were kids, after it came out we were serious superfans lol. We used to pretend on windy days that we were fighting goblins, my brother who used to build stuff actually made the stone they use and wrote his own version of the book with drawings of swamp trolls and little dragonfly wings he found, we'd pretend that we had a brownie living in our house called Needlethread and i even built a little birdhouse with honey and a bed and everything :D we were GIANT nerds and i still have some of the drawings my brother did of some creatures he designed - he invented one called the Crillquin which was a little mouse/rabbit thing with wings and eight eyes and he would steal socks for his nest (needless to say, it was just an excuse for why our socks kept going missing haha)

This film is incredible. The graphics are so fantastic and close to the books illustrations, the world is a lot bigger but obviously couldn't all be put into 1 film. My youngest son (now 17) was obsessed with this film and we watched it almost every day for years. He also had the XBOX game and the final chase with Mulgarath up through the dumbwaiter, through the attic and onto the roof is bloody terrifying🤣
