Which one do you prefer? Gullfoss vs Soothe 2 vs Smooth Operator vs Teote vs DSEQ 3 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZfHd5htppd1ldE

I prefer DSEQ 3 as it has one feature the others don't - slope adjustment that allows you to specify slopes anywhere from -6 to 6. That makes a difference. That said, I actually try not to use these plugins much. Certainly no more than a -3 dB setting also.

Do these plugins determine the difference between what may be a resonance or do they duck the fundamental and overtones as well
@audiotoolshed
@audiotoolshed Жыл бұрын
Resonance only - as seen in comparison to surrounding frequencies. So its not harmonics reduction but things like guitar fizz or a honky note in a voice.

I think you’re one of the best analysts on KZbin. Love your style of presenting. Very interesting plug-in worth checking out. I do have Gullfoss and Smooth Operator (very different beast though) but I do find myself using them selectively. With this profusion in this sort of plugin, one does wonder how all those classic albums were ever made without suppressing resonances haha 😅. Keep up the excellent content.

Thanks for your kind words! Ideally you never want to use soothe 2 or gulfoss ( very different tools indeed). Using these types of tools is also a sign of the times where everything can and will be analyzed to death and where the skill to record something properly seem to have dimished a bit.

agreed for the most part. However there are legendary albums of which I make "personal remasters" so I can listen to it more loudly without having to wear ear protection because some guitar is mixed completely over the top with resonances that really hurt. Of course it is a taste thing , others say "guitars cant be too loud" or "there is no such thing as too much bass" but nonetheless. Imho some of the legendary albums could profit from a bit of resonance suppression tbh. But thats just my taste and opinion . Dont shoot me!

@@audiotoolshed its nuts you are right. i find also amazing that we have the best tools and best audio systems in history but on the other hand have a lot of music with the smallest dynamic range in history. Millions of dollars heavy studios and a -3lufs master comes out. Thats what amazes me. That there is still a loudness war. It hurts but its true

Another great video. Thanks! I hope the Windows version comes out soon. I noticed in your video that when switching between the two tracks that you first soloed one before muting the other, creating a short period of time when we hear both tracks soloed. In Cubase if you CTRL-Click on any solo button it will mute all the other tracks. This means that doing a CRTL-Click on the solo button of your muted track would automatically mute the previously soloed track. This would allow for a smooth transition between tracks without having to solo both tracks before muting one. But maybe you already knew that!😀

That's one way to do it, i have always hated that workflow since it can mess up wat you're trying to show with screengrabs and also in mixing. I left that in as a little ear cleanser ;-) Usuallu i go for a different solo option, i do that for 75% of the guitar part ;-)

I'm hearing a huge difference between them when you engaged the delta , the SA-3 is more surgical in removing resonant frequencies while soothe 2 is removing way more stuff so its more of a shaping plugin for harsh sources in general , SA-3 is more subtle imo.

I can understand ;-) Actually I thought about it a few seconds about it and decided to keep it in. It resets you ears in a way which makes the nitpicking on differences even more superfluous. On the guitar a/b part i have smooth transitions.
@Tekkerue
@Tekkerue Жыл бұрын
@@audiotoolshed I agree that an immediate A/B is preferable, although 'disturbing' is a bit much. lol In Reaper you can put both plugins on the same track, enable one and disable the other, select both plugins and then toggle between them with a keyboard shortcut. It makes A/Bing plugins and even groups of plugins really nice. Is there a way you can do something similar or do you need to have them on separate tracks?
@audiotoolshed
@audiotoolshed Жыл бұрын
@tekkerue I usually use either 2 send effect or groups where I route 1 audio track to those two. when you have one solo, the other mutes and when you mute that one, the other solos. You can see that in action at the first half or so with the guitars.

I have a gripe with Soothe2. It effects frequencies outside of the bands that you set up. I've recorded videos to demonstrate this issue and I'll soon send them to Oeksound. It will be interesting to see what they have to say but I'm expecting their repsonse to be some sort of copout excuse.

Well he's not wrong, soothe 2 works a bit outside the curve you set even by compensating for it a lot. But i dont see it as an issue.
@AudioAssassin
@AudioAssassin Жыл бұрын
@@Jazzguitar00Lol, no.... I've had it for a very long time and I've fucked around with it to the point of utilising its full potential. The band type doesn't matter at all. If you are looking to pinpoint a particular frequency range it affects lots of frequencies on both sides of your selected band. The only thing you can do to SLIGHTLY remedy this problem is to set up shelves on both sides of the band and pull those shelves done to slightly reduce attenuation outside the band. But it doesn't help much. I had to resort to using Fabfilter Pro-Q3's dynamic band feature on one particular project to attenuate a specific frequency range but of course that doesn't have attack and release settings so that was problematic also. I just hope that Oeksound will do something about the issue in future.
@G-O-N-x

Doesn't putting a low and a high pass filter on soothe2 around the range you want to affect resolve the issue ?? Of course it would only work if you wanna affect ONE specific range

been listening again , also in comparison to Dove. I think sooth 2 does the better job and "Transparency" is not really a selling point when it comes to this type of plugin , you either use it very gently or heavily and sooth 2 does great job on the heavy side , with lots of sound shaping while it can also be used more gently. its a mixing plugin. Dove is more a Mastering plugin I think or so it is being marketed and I don't really see the point of all the analog modeling. and the SA-3 has the advantage of running on DSP but I wasn't too impressed by it.

Clickbait title. I think you are better than this Marlon. The McDSPSA-3 is a great plugin and before Soothe there were many Spectral EQs (f.e.Voxengo Soniformer, Melda Productions MSpectralDynamics, Toneboosters SibilanceV3). So please stop pretending that Oeksound is the inventor of these kind of plugins.

@@audiotoolshed The title for your Soothe 2 review is "Oeksound SOOTHE 2 - Vst Plugin Review". Something similar to this would be the right thing to write for McDSPSA-3. Not implying that they ripped off Soothe2, which will get you more clicks than "McDSPSA-3 -Vst Plugin Review"
@audiotoolshed

in other words - you dont like the title. And that's fine, no problem there. I will go in a bit deper here on youtube video titeling - Don't confuse engaging with clickbait - clickbait is something which sais something while the actual content is not delevering on what is promised - which I never ever do. Engaging is to tickle you into clicking something. Ideally the title you suggest would be working - heck I even prefer that. In reality unfortunately it is something that won't work. Mcdsp sa-3 is not something which is compelling enough for many viewers to click on , i learned that with the sa-2 plugin. And I dont spend this huge amount of time to simple have a dead video on publishing. Blame the audience, not me. Soothe 2 absolutely is engaging for many. You can trust me when I say i have some idea of what works and what doesnt , i spend an awful lot of time studying and understanding audience.
