OTT is rarely used for mastering or on the mix bus. It is used widely in many different applications in EDM music - particularly for aggressive sounds such as dubstep basses, hardstyle/hardcore leads, and screeches, but also can be used effectively to bring out the best elements in vocals, pads, plucks, etc. OTT is, as the name suggests, very powerful, and is often used at 50% wet or less. OTT is specifically designed for achieving super aggressive sounds, and can often dramatically change the tone of whatever it is used on. As such it is very much considered a creative effect, and the OTT 'sound' (along with similar effects like the Xfer OTT and the Vengeance Multiband Compressor 'Dance Master' presets) is one of the defining sounds of EDM music of recent times. That said, after watching this review, it seems the MO-TT could potentially have some use in a mastering context due to the the increased amount of control over the various parameters.

Not a word I can disagreee with. This is the current meta of OTT, and MO-TT is probably gonna spread that same juice to other genres, because this plugin is fantastic.

Xfer OTT might be considered a creative effect. But this isn’t that. Slate decided to lean into the OTT thing with the name and default preset, but it’s a full featured multiband comp that can be used as subtly as you want.
@jayjaybirdsnest
@jayjaybirdsnest 2 жыл бұрын
only thing i disagree on is that its rarely used on the master/mix bus. Deadmau5 uses OTT and Pro L on (I'm pretty sure) all of his final mixes/masters. (he also co-creates a lot of the x-fer stuff) and I've seen plenty of other artists use it on the master (although its usually only set to 3-7%)
@AirDuern
@AirDuern 2 жыл бұрын
From what you say, it seems so very specific, it should not suit a lot of people... It surprises me because I've already used multiband comp in different contexts, depending on the amount applied, even mastering context. Is it specific to OTT?
@TjMoon91
@TjMoon91 2 жыл бұрын
@@AirDuern When people say OTT they are often referring to the Xfer version, which is a recreation of a specific preset in Ableton's Multiband Dynamics. That preset has limiting ratios on the downward compressor of every band, as well as pretty aggressive upward compression at the same time. In the Xfer version you can't change the ratios, as it's just designed to get the sound of that one specific preset, so it's a very extreme effect that people often use in parallel. That's not what MO-TT is though. It's obviously capable of getting that OTT sound, and that's what they are focussing on that in the marketing, but MO-TT is a very flexible downward and upward multi-band compressor. If you simply want to subtly tame some high end harshness, tighten up the low end, or control a poky midrange in a vocal, it's perfectly capable of all that too.

Love your vids man! Seems like you’ve never used Abletons OTT. It’s a preset in the multi band comp. It took on a life of its own. The xfer plug-in is an attempt at getting that sound for non ableton users. Lofi is an odd choice for testing it, it’s usually better suited on synths and basses and things that need squashing.

I've never used OTT in a mastering scenario. When I use it, it's most commonly on synths and subtly used on vocals. I've used it on guitars to get a hyper-aggressive sound for genres such as nu-metal. IMO, it's a mixing tool for a pretty specific sound. That said, I can't really visualize a use case where I would buy this over just using the OTT preset or downloading the free OTT plugin from Xfer Records. I guess maybe if I really liked the UI? I suppose this one is more user-friendly than Xfer on the simple fact that it gives more information on what it's actually doing, but being a Live owner where the OTT preset originated and gives almost the same amount of information (Minus the spectrogram), I can't justify it.

This seems like a mere OTT imitation with lots of extra parameters to control. In my opinion, it sounds really nice, and can be used for almost any source and has lots of features that would be nice on the original OTT which I know that many producers use to make their audio sources sound "good" fast for working with a faster writing and producing tempo of workflow. Also, I'm a little shocked you haven't tried OTT on vocals ever Wytse. I did for some time, but I don't find it better than doing it manually, with for instance with a top shelf boost into a de-esser or a multiband to smooth it out afterwards. Soothe also helps quiet a lot with these "battle of the top frequencies" issues I guess we all encounter more and more often in cluttered mixes. Thank you sharing your thoughts as always!

i use xfer ott all the time. when that plugin was released my mind was blown away. i did not know compression could be so much fun when being pushed way too hard. ofc it's the usual problem, like with most of your videos, that you try it on a full mix rather than a single track. things that distort get nasty quickly on complex signals. but try it on synth leads, on vocals, on reverb sends, on funky basslines, on stuff, where you actually want to bring up the noise from the background as a stylistic effect and much more. you asked if ott is used for mastering though. i'd say no. not even i would do that. i think i did it very rarely, but the problem is just that you can't adjust the crossover frequencies and xfer ott also has no mix-knob for dialing in the dry signal. but apart from that i'd say it's pretty close to being a mastering-worthy effect
@MIDNIGHTCVLT
@MIDNIGHTCVLT 2 жыл бұрын
This one's mix knob is not mixing it with the dry signal. It is affecting the overall compression amount. If you mix this plugin with a dry signal you will have extreme phase issues (i have already tested it, in fact it was the first thing i did) . I wish they add a linear phase filter for this one, it would be sick

You can laugh but I've used Xfer OTT in an Spector bass with heavy distortion and got a really chunky Meshuggah style grind, was really impressed. The point though is to use it in the right amount, because it can be overkill pretty quick. This Slate version seems very fitting to those who like the original idea of the plugin but in a much more laid back and more "compressor" style and not sound design type of thing, and of course more suitable for other genres in wich you can squash everything but also have options and control over your sound.

@artfxdnb 2 жыл бұрын
That is probably because it messes with the phase too much, that's why people don't use it for mastering much. It splits your sound into frequency bands and thus it does a big phase shift around those crossover frequencies. It then applies that to everything in your mix and bringing the amount down doesn't decrease the amount of phase change around those crossovers either, it just decreases the ratio of the compressors. So even at 1-2% OTT does a massive change to your signal which is for sure not desired when doing mastering.

I don't think this is an expander. Isn't that upward compression?
@AlexLapugean
@AlexLapugean 2 жыл бұрын
Correct. OTT is a combination of upwards and downwards compression that squashes both quiet parts and loud parts together, for that flat sound. An expander does the exact opposite...
@dustycooper
@dustycooper 2 жыл бұрын
@@AlexLapugean To clarify more: upwards compression boosts sounds below the threshold, downwards compression attenuates sounds above the threshold. So indeed, this plugin is not an expander.
@imcymk

you can set it to expander using negative ratio on the upward compression bar (the ratio turns green)
@TjMoon91
@TjMoon91 2 жыл бұрын
It’s both. Edit: I hadn't actually tried it yet. I just assumed as because Ableton's is an expander, this would be too. MO-TT does downwards expansion, but unlike Ableton's, it can't do upwards expansion, as far as I can tell.

OTT is a godsend you can do so much with once you learn how to utilize it. However this feels like a gold plated OTT with a few more advanced dials you're stuck paying a whopping $150 / for. I'd consider this for maybe $50, but the fact that there's a completely free xfer version of the main functions magic online as well as one built into ableton, the price is rather ridiculous.

It is only applicable in situations where you want to create a sound wall without dynamics or a sound that cuts into the mix. It is not recommended for the master, the voice and for acoustic instruments, which certainly must be treated with different chains of moderate and sweeter effects
@TjMoon91
@TjMoon91 2 жыл бұрын
Don’t be influenced by the name. It’s just a multi-band compressor that can be used as subtly or as extremely as you like. Multi-band compression is a common technique for all kinds of instruments, including vocals.
@imcymk

the OG is definitely purely a sound design tool. this allows ppl to use the og as a starting point while being able to modify more details without breaking the prese . the main issue with the original ones (live or the vst) is that it either works or it doesn't and if parallel didn't work then that was it you had no way of really adjusting. with this you can either go from the og starting point, the 2 new ones they give you or use it as a 3 band comp/expander(upward comp on negative ratio gives expansion) from 0 (which is what i've been doing). folks who are used to using it as secret sauce for energy can get more specific (sound deisgners mostly) how intense the effect can be per band. in a mix context very subtle moves weren't really an option with the OGs. here it's a viable option assuming you like what it's doing in small amounts.
@TjMoon91
@TjMoon91 2 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about. The original OTT is just the name of one of the presets. Of course you can edit Multiband Dynamics however you like.

Compared to an egregious subscription plan like Adobe’s, for example, Slate’s all access pass seems pretty fair. It’s a ton of stuff for 150 bucks a year, which is what you would pay outright for just one of their plug-ins. It just makes more sense for me personally because I use a bunch of slate plugins as well as the overloud and kilohearts stuff. But if you’re only gonna use the VMR or one or two other plug-ins, it probably wouldn’t be worth it.

It doesn’t make much sense for people that already have a complete tool set and don’t ‘need’ a whole bundle of plugins. But if you haven’t really dived into purchasing third party plug-ins and want a wide range of high quality mixing tools I think it makes a lot of sense.

'master' is not = 'mixdown' a mix can use a limiter on any element at whatever stage of mixing; mastering is how the 'final' output is tailored for a specific format e.g. the outputted .wav/flac file's EQ and/or dynamics may be optimized for radio vs direct download vs vinyl vs cinematic vs TV etc
@jorykevinberger7047

@@shaft9000 hope you’re well. I almost follow. What do you call a mix down given to a mastering engineer who masters for loudness and doesn’t tailor to any format aside for what’s best for translation? Do you still call that a mixdown? If so, a lot of people who get paid to master are really only making more mixdowns whether those songs go to radio etc or not. What are your thoughts on that? Cheers.
