You do understand that Universal Audio is the hardware company who made the actual 6176' and make the real LA2A's? So when he says faithful, literally they can do it. They have been around for decades and their hardware is fantastic. UAD is the name for their DSP plugins. DSP is in rapid decline, so they are offering more options for people to own them. You can buy the actually plugins to keep you do know that right? Subscription is just another option. Great American company, just seems you don't know much about them.

@@xpowerchord12088 It's not a faithful 1:1 recreation of anything - there is no hardware version. It's three existing UAD plugins (610B, 1176, LA2A) wrapped in one plugin with a HPF, variable Ω and a new GUI. This required minimal effort on UAD's part, adds little value for UAD Spark customers, and is obviously just a Waves-style cash grab!

For UAD Apollo owners this plug-in can be inserted as Unison channel strip. This is in essence is like having the hardware inline prior to the interface. The beauty of this is the low latency real time processing prior to hitting the DAW. At about $100 it is a lot cheaper than the real deal bringing a great emulation to the smaller studio. To me this is the real advantage.

Yeah but who really cares because there are much nicer preamps like the V76 or any of the Neves or the API so why would you ever want this? I had the hardware and that was also only my 3rd choice unless I’d run out of pre-amps. The Sebatron slays it, handmade and cheaper.

This being a channel strip also allows one with an Apollo to track pre-into-compressor via the Unison preamp, which cannot easily be accomplished otherwise.

New LA-6176 offers Hi z , that 610 plugins do not. Bass and E GTRs can now track thru unison. Also for the first time, 2 unison plugins run at the same time. So you never lose "the feel" of unison when adding the 1176 or la2a. My loyalty offer from UAD was $49, There is more definition of tone and very noticeable dynamics "the feel" when playing thru unison. * adding any plugin, after a unison plugin in the recording chain, "kills the feel"* IMO this HI z Unison feature is overall better playing and sounding than existing versions of UAD 610's. 1176 and LA2A. Unless you have tried unison plugins, thru an Apollo, nothing I mentioned will make any sense. Hope this helps someone.

This is a baffling addition to the UAD cannon. I mean most long term owners like me already have the preamps, the 1176 and the LA2As so… whats this for? I mean the original 6176 hardware was basically a budget friendly version of 610 pre and a similar lesser version of either la2a or 1176. Pretty uninteresting.

One approach: The ability to have the Pre and Compressor in a single Unison slot is unique including impedance management. Set in LA-2a Mode so the pre can drive the optical compressor and add a 1176 as a post Unison insert to catch the hot transients and record with almost no latency. A classic multi thousand dollar hardware vocal recording set up used by the best can available to the home / indie studio. Try that in a DAW and a "red box" interface.

As I review the comments, I’m rather surprised at the level of hate for this plug-in. Other reviews comment on the fact that the UAD emulation of the Fairchild compressor is amazing because nobody will ever be able to afford one… This plug-in emulates about €6000 worth of classic hardware ( LA-6176, LA-610, 1176LN, LA-2A, 610 ) for $100. Many people are challenged when trying to work with dynamic microphones and require additional in-line preamps, this could help solve that issue (Gain before Level). Add the ability to change the physical impedance with Unison is a powerful feature when working with different microphone types. The ability to switch between two different types of compressors and record at near zero latency is incredibly useful for tracking especially with vocals. I normally find Wytse’s reviews balanced and informative, but I feel this one did not properly evaluate the product. Not every plugin is for every user but I feel this is a very high value plug in the hands of someone who understand its power when combined with the Apollo platform. PS, I have no affiliation with UA whatsoever.

A few things: this is usually used as a vocal channel strip! That might be best test case. Second, it might be helpful to read the manual we steps on setting it up. Good idea to make sure the compressor is in bypass when you’re setting your input gain. Last, the impedance really is the first gain stage. There are guidelines for what impedance is correct based on what mic you’re using (large diaphragm condensers usually best for 2k ohm iirc), but manual ultimately does concur that ‘different impedance = different sound)

Mics sound radically different in 2k or 500ohms in the hardware unit. It's a question whether you want lean, more pushed high-mids, or thicker low-end, irrespective of all mic model (2kOhm is always gritty, 500Ohm is always mellow). Depends on what suits the material.

FYI Wytse, plugins adopt auto gain behaviour by default when run within Softube Console 1 (can also be disabled manually)., so the shift layer for make up gain is less of an issue. Also this plugin is of most value when using unison when committing on tracking using a UAD interface, as can now add preamp and comp in the unison slot, NOT as a native plug.

Everything worth mentioning comes through on KZbin, unless content creators are not respecting the Headroom needed for clean conversion (I'd be shocked if you didn't). Don't you worry! The most sublte of audible saturation can be heard, provided the listening system enables it. KZbin, believe it or not, is probably the strongest link in the chain. The differences of what you hear and your viewers hear is mainly due to the differences in room, speakers, headphones, ears, and minds. All of these points affect the listening experience 100 times more, than the very, very clean conversion. And yes, I will repeat this indefinitely until you stop saying "I don't know if that comes through on KZbin".

In this case I agree, because UAD plugins are being ported over to native platform, UAD are drawing this out. If UAD were to port over all their best plugins, such as their coveted Neve compressors and the Bob Katz stuff, then there would be no incentive to get the UAD hardware. Instead they tend to put out a range of different pre-amps and compressors with limited features. Or worse, they make a totally new one, which might as well be anything, from any other company. They know they could port all the plugins over to native, however, that could mean the forfeit of new customers buying their hardware. I wrote to UAD saying, ultimately, while the unison technology might be quiet nice, it's basically a novelty, before we had real tape, then there were emulations, and in reality, people have gotten by with plugins for decades now. You can either mix, or you can't, no amount of unison tech is going to help that, it's an add on, which is not vital. Shortly after that, they created Spark - coincidence...? lol

Around 20 years ago when the first 6176 and LA-610 hardware came out, the compression sections were slated for their sound quality, build quality and aesthetic on the forums. I tried very hard to like my LA-610 but there were so many better channel strip options out there that it was never worth it. You can't tell me that UA have simulated those circuits rather than implementing their actual real LA-2A or 1176 within the circuit into their new plugin, can you? I really do like their 610 hardware but there's been a unison offering for that for years. It just can't be that they've recreated their inferior circuits into a channel strip plugin worth $300 when you can buy their emulated 1176 and LA-2A bundles for around $39 each right now. What is going on?!

I have the hardware unit, and also the 610 preamp as well and kinda nobody knows for sure which the gain comes first and level later or the way round. Also have al LA610mk2 hardware unit. It's a little bit frustrating having to switch to meter on pre-amp mode and get the proper gain stage in and out bypassing the comp, then adding the comp and having your level again messed with the output gain, and peak reduction mode as well. Specially in situations when you need to remind the singer ever other second that he or she needs to sing for reals cos he won't understand you're trying to get things to work. Always using the PAD switch on when tracking because it tends to hit the preamp way above 0VU, and it looks like it does more than just reducing the signal by -15dB. Anyone who knows how the preamp really works, throw your theories here, cos it feel like solving the JFK thing. If you really know what you are doing and how the song is gonna be, you can EQ the on the way in. Just remember that it works on the overall voltage, not just the sound, so the meter reacts differently.

"Another color" is really a great way to think about plugins. How much do you need to add that slightly different hue to your palette? That's one question. But another question is, how much are you willing to pay to add another tube of paint? For the record, a useful size tube of acrylic paint may run you anywhere from 5-20 dollars, depending on color and quality and quantity. Since software offers unlimited quantity, you're now just wondering about color and quality, which are both subjective. Nevertheless, a double-digit pricetag for such a product MIGHT be worth it for you, or it might not, but the pricetag itself is in line with other artistic and creative tools. Make the decision for yourself.

I would like to see you do some more reasonable settings, and actually give it time to hear it. In a lot of your videos you just move the knobs extremely fast in a kind of ''I don't care manner'' Listen to it for like 5 seconds. You just seem really impatient when messing with it. I try not to make it sound like a hate comment. Just my thoughts on what you could do better, to give the plugins a chance. And therefor giving the viewer a better idea of the sonics. Kind Regards

I totally wonder how much UA's plugins are actually modeling the orig piece of gear, is it just tacking some distortion onto the wave & how much if any does the sound wave affect the harmonics and is it all just a static algorithm

I don't really understand Plugin channel-strips. For me the howl idea of a channel strip is the analog circuit, using the tubes or better the output transformers. Being able to use EQ on the way in and have a compressor for a safety net to not clip the converters. Thanks for waisting my time 🤣

I guess the desirability (and necessity) of the plugin will come down to people that see the 1176 or LA2A as being a key area of their production sound. They will strive for that ever accumulating extra 1%, and it could be that this plugin will come out top in their local face-offs, replacing their other 1176/LA2A vsts. There may be many options out there, but if this is the best one then there is a market. $300 better than others.. In addition, no doubt there will be people that throw a trial of this onto their mix, get a real buzz from the compression and (unintended) extra volume(!), and decide that that they can’t live without that sound being on the end of their plugin chain :-)

Not something I will buy, period! What I really want, is a multi band gate. Even with AI in it. Gates are so poorly represented in plugins.

I love your channel but I also love this plugin...its just another tool in the tool box...its not what Id use on the mix buss like you chose to do, it works great on individual tracks better for me. I just think a better demonstration of the track would be not just to use it on an overall mix that...sorry but I have to be honest here...doesnt sound that great in the first place.

I think UA has some of the best sounding stuff, but not all of their plugins are native, they are overpriced for that little bit of quality difference, (and I do mean 'atoms" better), also it's like you say, nothing new. It's all the same junk more or less. Good Video Wytse

We don't need more versions. Better would be plungins that are really useful. It's the same like tb303 or 808 and 909.. Why sell stuff that was already old when I was young? It doesn't sound new and not fresh and not like modern stuff. Always selling old sound in new cloths always same shit. But yes it's not bad as it could be but it would be better create dope great sound more affordable. Selling stuff in price range of a car makes it worse. Yes quality need price but if we get down to the gear, a compressor at 5000 or more doesn't make sense anymore. Becourse only a few can hear the difference and the more of quality is mostly a very little difference to hear today. It's not 1980 we're 2024 and that's my point of view.
