I watch a lot of sailing youtubers, many of them seem to have a lot of money behind them, which is great for them, but makes the entire sailing the world dream look beyond my means. Watching your videos is inspirational because you don't appear to have a million euros in the bank, or to be living an endless party lifestyle, you don't have an expensive yacht and you fix things yourself most of the time or make do with them. Great videos of an amazing journey!

Hi again N. Finished watching your latest video- where your talking to us about the stars and bureaucrats and stormy nights that fade away. I like that you're not manufactured. That you enjoy the little things. That you have character enough that it spilled over into a relationship about Karl. As if some sense of independence could be found far from home with a few thousand watchful fans for company whenever you need them. All your doing. Thoughtful stuff for an unconventional woman. Joy always within.

I actually really enjoy sailing at night. Especially if there are stars and the moon. I think it's so tranquil and peaceful and u feel and hear ur boat so much more. Except the part about not being able to see the upcoming squalls if it is really dark...;). You guys must enjoy bing on the move! Gotta catch up with ur videos when I am back home in Germany!

WhiteSpotPirates We had some rough night passages on the Bay of Biscay, since there were no stars or any other points of orientation and no tillerpilot to motor us on a straight course. But a tillerpilot is mounted now and nightpassages (with no wind) should be easier now. With wind and the windpilot it is awesome!

Great stuff. What I really like about all of your uploads is that they show the real sailing life, the local nature wherever you go and the local life of the people there. Loads of happy rich 'Hollywood' style sailing videos here on UTube that don't show any of this so, well done to you and keep these uploads coming.
@WhiteSpotPirates8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for saying that. It's how I usually approach a new destination. I love just watching people doing their thing...and trying to get a glimpse of their daily life. That's what I find really fascinating about traveling. Of course museums and architecture and nature are also really interesting, but watching people is one of my favorited. Find a good spot at some square, have a drink and soak it all up...:)
@FegrusMojo8 жыл бұрын
Nope - The thanks go to you for sharing all of this 'real' sailing around and showing everything as it really is & none of that 'Hollywood' stuff. When I take a vacation I don't go into any museums but I do take in the buildings/construction of the location I'm in. I prefer to "go into the sticks" as they say and meet the real people/life/nature right there myself. So, thanks again for your uploads and keep them coming :)

I was also hoping you could land your Kayak on the dock. Seemed perfectly harmless to me but rules are rules I guess. Love your resilience hunting the conch using it for food and also to catch your snapper. You always make a meal look well deserved after the tough hunting and gathering. Something most of us in the US don't have a clue where our food originates. I enjoy your camera work and thumbs up on the editing. You have mentioned a friend in Germany helps with that. Once again well done gang!

Ahoy - Nike and Karl! Really enjoyed this episode - some of the best sailing footage you've produced (Really portrayed what the joy of sailing is all about!) Yes, Cuban authorities can be somewhat (i.e. VERY) inflexible.... Everything happens for a reason though. If the harbourmaster had allowed you to land ashore in Karlitos, you would've missed the Fiesta de La Primera de Mayo in Trinidad!:-) You may already know this, but there is a rule of thumb to gauge the distance of lightning. Time the distance between the flash and the bang and every three seconds represents one kilometre, so you may be able to tell (If the storm is not over too large an area) whether the storm is approaching, or receding. I have very little electrical knowledge, but I'm told the best way to protect your boat from lightning in a storm is a length of stainless or galvanised chain - the middle of which is wrapped two or three times around the mast and both ends draped across the deck and over the side as close to the mast as possible and into the water another two or three metres. This is supposed to provide a shorter route to ground (Earth and so the lightning doesn't pass through your electrical circuits, causing severe damage to all your electrical equipment. Please stay safe in Germany, enjoy yourself and don't stress about Karl. I'm sure he'll be very pleased to see you return, (Laden with presents for him i'm sure!) ;-) Kindest regards, Mike :-)

Hi Nike, Very sweet and journeyful video as always. Thx. Think I saw your harness line is made out of dyneema. You might consider switching to a more elastic rope as the loads when the line stops you when falling are immense in rough weather. To my opinion,a climbing rope would be the most appropriate for this. But of course, in the end the best thing is not using these life savings systems.

Just think. By going on and buying the boat and going for your dream. You have and are doing what no telling how many people would love to do but just didn't go for it. Now you will have all these wonderful memory's to think about and share for the rest of your life while the rest of us can only wish we had. Of course I know that for many its just not possible but for the ones that could and didn't. Well sometimes dreams can only be lived once in life. Great Video. :)

I liked the old dudes with their cigars. Great to hear you've sighted Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. I've often thought that a small telescope would be great to take along on a cruise. Of course, you'd have to set it up on land in a really dark sky spot. You could be a kind of voyaging astronomer.

Best days at sea are those perfect full moons where as the sun touches the horizon and the moon pokes it's head out and vice a versa. Lets you know the world is round, always makes me wonder why it took so long to figure that one out. Worst days at sea are those sleepless nights at anchor.

Nice conch! I'm sorry that you did not feel like you could afford the $20 marina berth for the storm. It looked like you were using the Genoa with the broken furler. I really liked Playa Sirena.
@WhiteSpotPirates8 жыл бұрын
Not sure if a storm in the marina is so much nicer :). And sometimes it's not possible to go to a marina so it's good to have practice in storms at anchor even though it might keep u up for a while or worries u for a while. But I would surely prefer a world without storms, haha. Yeah, I did sail the broken furler till Cayman. But it did get stuck once on the way down to Cayman and I was happy to receive and mount the spare one when I got there for sure. Good luck for your book release!

WhiteSpotPirates I would tie up in a storm at Cayo Largo with its good protection and floating docks. I would not say that for most marinas in Cuba.

I don't understand why you can't go from Trinidad Cuba to Casilda, it is part of the municipality of Trinidad. Maybe you explain it at 1:40, but I can't understand the word you said, something lingo...so in Cuba, you can only disembark at the port you checked into? You can't sail anywhere else and get off the boat? Doesn't make any sense at all.
@WhiteSpotPirates7 жыл бұрын
Hi Josef, in Cuba, you can only ever get off any privately owned boat (be it ur sailing vessel or dinghi or kayak) in a marina. It does not matter if it's the same municipality. Maybe it does not make any sense to you, but it surely makes sense to the Cuban government ;). The only thing I can think of is that they are trying to prevent people to sneak onto a boat to leave the country. When you enter an anchorage, you will be surrounded by litte floats with a Cuban on them that make sure you don't go to land. At least in most of the places. At least that was my experience...

It's probably a personality quirk of mine, but whenever someone tells me I can't do something; my mind screams " why not " I suppose they didn't offer you a reason why you could not go ashore?
@WhiteSpotPirates8 жыл бұрын
Well, I kinda wondered if they would not let me go to shore... They are very strict about that in Cuba. Believe me, I did argue for a while with him, but he would not let me. He said it was because it would make him responsible to look after my kayak...I think it has its origine in them being afraid that someone smuggles people out of the country. Ahoy, Nike & Karl

Hike are you trying to discourage people from cruising to save it all to yourself? I have seen the brochures and it is all supposed to be walking on pristine beaches with an umbrella in your cocktail. They never show people wearing foul weather gear, only fair weather sailing. If it was that easy and great it would be as crowded Disneyland. Have fun in Miami.
