Good information on the trail cams. I’m a state trooper and work in a rural area. When I talk to burglary victims I tell them the same thing about putting trail cameras on their driveway. Biggest thing is hide them good, put a camera covering a dummy camera. And get pictures of vehicles and license plates; it’s easier to find a vehicle sometimes, especially in a rural community, than finding a guy in full camo who has a face mask on. Good info.

Your approach to trespassers is spot on. You have to be super tough. In my experience the nicer you are the more likely you’ll see them again and they tell their buddies.

Great suggestions. Most of us have had trespassing issues on our hunting land. The problem in Wisconsin is that our trespassing laws and fines are very minimal and the DNR wardens are not currently authorized to ticket trespassers. One has to call the sheriff, and they are extremely busy, and prosecutors are reluctant to spend a lot of time of a trespassing case. A few years ago we had a trespasser stealing sheds on our land and three adjacent farms. We found him and it was very difficult and time consuming to prosecute, and in the end he walked away with a minimum fine. Also, in Wisconsin if a trespasser harvests a deer with a legal weapon during legal shooting hours, his only violation is trespassing... if he is caught. Thanks, Bob

Trespassers are essentially bullies in my opinion. If a trespasser is in my property and I run into him, I ask how they missed the posted signs. I didn’t see any isn’t an excuse as you’d have to be blind not to see the hundreds I have posted. I don’t get mean, but I’m not nice either. I just say this is private property and I have cameras for proof of trespassing. That’s it. I’m a rather quiet guy and I believe the saying is true...watch out for the quiet ones. Never had a repeat offender 😀

MY GOSH!!! The best advice ever given online. Yes, you have to make your neighbors think your a little crazy. I have all these and ore problems with trespassers. But not anymore. Everyone knows they better not step one foot on my land because I don't give second chances anymore. If Fact, When I new neighbor moves in, the day they move in I go to their house and tell them who I am and make it clear I dont want them, their kids, their dogs or friends on my land and I will be installing cameras behind their house to be sure they listen. Some understand and we become good neighbors and watch out for each other, but a few dont listen, and have paid the price..

Make some nail throws, and bury thing on your paths that they are sneaking in on.. thd.co/3x4nFTn And pop some nails through it, And then bury it with the nails sticking up...where they are sneaking in.. Install a camera to catch their faces when they realize they have to buy new tires.. If they are minors, Sue the parents for the damage done to planted crop. Adults go to jail, along with paying for all land and crop damage. Work with local police and ask that when they catch the trespassers that they impound the bikes.. So they have to pay for damage caused, trespassing fees, and have to pay to get their bikes out of impound. And ask the local police to put it on the news the consequences the trespassers had to pay.. Once parents of minor trespassers and adults trespassers see the possible consequences. It will stop..

Great video...I'm here because a few days ago someone stole our stealth cam camera at our gate entrance. We put the camera up because people were stealing our packages. Our baby girl was born last October and people stole a bunch of baby clothes and supplies. I'm sure they didn't need it when they opened it and probably just threw them away but it was very frustrating. So now I'm buying the Spartan Ghost cams that have gps tracking in them. We own many acres and do not allow trespassing and have signage up but still see where people are driving around our gate and moving about our land.

Last October I had two trespassers walk by my tree stand with fishing poles that spooked deer from me. I got them on video with my phone and told them to stay out...was getting down from my stand to have a "chat" with them and they just booked it. Told my dad and he picked me up and we drove to the street where we think they came from and found them. Got their names, contact information and told them to not come back again or we would press charges. Had about 5 different trespassers last year and we usually don't have many, why can't people respect property if it's not theirs and clearly posted?

Great video. I've been doing these things for years and have had a few people prosecuted or at least warned. Another tip is if you have access points where you know people are entering, such as a gate or two track, put cameras high...like to the point where you need a ladder or tractor bucket to get them down. Professional trespassers are really good at picking out cameras even 10 feet off the ground. Also I recommend buying the biggest card your camera will accept and using video mode rather than photo mode. It is sometimes difficult to get a pic clear enough to identify someone, because they happen to look down or look away at the very moment. But during a 10-20 second video, you will often get a good view that you can screen shot, and also you may get something identifiable like their walk, voice, noisy muffler, etc.

Great info Jeff! I hunt public land and I would say that maintaining "No Trespassing" signs should be a priority also. I've seen posted signs so old you could barely read them. Some of the property owners adjoining the public land don't even post while I've seen others post with orange boarders around the sign near problem areas. I just think that this kinda indicates if the owner is complacent or actively cares about their property.

As a LE officer I can say this for certain. You Or someone spent a lot of money on your land. You also spend a lot of money on hunting and fishing gear. Spend money on good quality signs that are aluminum and have your states trespassing law printed on them. Screw them to nice plywood backed that you can screw to trees or put on posts. Well posted property that looks like someone actually spent time posting is a lot less likely to be trespassed on than a property with old or faded signs that are often far apart or sometimes missing. Use cameras in use signs, gate off roads and hang cameras. People are less apt to mess with someone who looks like they take care of their property as well as are neat. Also cutting a deep uncrossable ditch near your gate helps. Hide some planks to drive across nearby for your use. I have also put my phone number on all my signs so no one can say they tried to find out who owned the land and couldn’t.

Another good location for a camera (besides high up) is a place on the trail where the terrain forces you to pay attention. Like a set of ruts, or a washout. The trespassers wont be looking for a camera when he needs to be focusing on the path or road.

Thanks for the tips. We have a new neighbor that moved in and likes to WANDER and was told by a real estate agent that his property was surrounded by "wildife preserve," which they didn't realize meant a hunting lease! Unfortunately, the land is arranged in such that we really need to cross their land in a short section to access much of our land. We have mostly negotiated that he can wander a little bit during the off seasons, and limited to once every other week or so, until we get to the lead-up before turkey or deer season. Not the best, but a compromise we had to make. I did freak him out early on though after a cell camera caught him walking in the middle of deer season. A quick phone call fixed that issue but its still been a negotiation due to our need to get across their property. Now, I do still need to stop by a house that I know has had some casual trespassers and have a frank conversation about expectiations!

Funny story Jeff... Last fall in sept. One of my first bow sits, sitting in a tree looking around I see a camera in a tree at about twenty yards. My fist thought was when did I put a camera there? The hunts over I take it home, put card in computer got over 200 Videos, had 5 videos in the middle of July red pickup driving on my property then backing up to drive out, stopping. The driver (young Gentleman) get out has his what I ASSUME is his wife,( I saw rings) jump in the back seat of his truck about 1/2 hour later got another video of them outside the truck finishing getting dressed......the wife and I laughed so hard we couldn't get mad! As far as your straps I got rid of those I use an I-lag bolt that will thread into tree thumb screwed together with another regular threaded I- bolt that threads into camera it really works good. heade for the woods have a great day!

Early winter with 5 inches of snow and they ripped into my property passed a No Trespassing sign and into a meadow i had just planted a few months earlier with seedlings on snow machines . Perfect pic of the license . Called the game warden who went to the guys place who admitted it . Got a $175.00 fine in court . The minute court was over i was in the office filing suit against him in small claims court for the damage . I was awarded $5,000.00 . That made the local paper and the tv news . Here it's absolutely legal to shoot an , at large dog . I haven't but would in a heart beat .

Hey Jeff: I really appreciate your content, and hope to give back a little here: In lieu of the strap that comes with the cameras I use Brown Vine-Wrapped Craft Wire (a.k.a. Brown Grapevine Wire). Blends in better, and with just 1-2 twists it hung. Using this wire allows for bending it for easier positioning of the camera too. Personally, I use the 4 holes on the camera and thread two equal lengths of the wire through creating an X pattern before wrapping it around the tree. Leave a little slack if you need to angle the camera. It stays put. Hope this suggestion helps save time, reduce the easy spotting of the strap, and potential theft of cameras.

@Meateater Whitetail72, I completely agree with you. I framed my comment poorly. What I meant was people trespass during deer season and use I shot a deer and it ran over here” excuse when caught. I’m always willing to help a fellow hunter, so I offer to help. When I say let’s go back to state land where you hit the deer, look at your arrow, hair, blood, tracks ext...where you shot it. When they can produce no evidence, it’s clear they are lying and that saying probably has worked in the past for the trespassers. If you legitimately shoot a deer and it runs over, I will give permission and even help drag out. Hope this clarifies my comment.

Love the video! There are a lot of great tips in here. The 80 acres I own shares a 40 line with a family that lives on the property and has 3 dogs. The dogs just run freely where ever they want to go. Anytime I walk within 100 yards of the property line they hear me and start barking and run towards the sound until they can see what it is. I have a camera 100 yards off the property line and have pictures of their dogs running by. I feel like the guy in your video where he lets the neighbor hunt the property line and now he is losing 10 acres. I feel the same way about trying to avoid these dogs so I dont spoke the deer on the property. Any tips on how to keep the dogs off the property? Thank you

Great suggestions Jeff. I am dealing with dog hunters on a new property I am leasing that drop their dogs off at the road which runs one side of the property and they run right thru - confronted them and then another truck of 8 guys with loaded shotguns drove up behind me while I was getting into the “leader”. I did a 180 and started laying in to them to about being on video. Truck of guys hauled butt outa there. My next step for this season is to put either barbed wire along the road edge about 25 yards into the wood line or electric fence line. Interested in your thoughts. I don’t mind dog hunting in certain circumstances but VA is having problems with encroachment on private lands and dog hunters can claim they “can’t control where their dogs go” so my warden said I have to get them on camera.

Thanks for this video. I have a few questions I'm really hoping can be answered-- Im from SE OH. Probably some of the best deer hunting in the state, if not the country. However, when you search crime statistics, you will see a lot of those(poorer) areas WAY above national averages in property crimes(violent crime to a lot of time). So, have you ever looked into this and seen a correlation with say, low property crime rates having less trespassing problems reported, anecdotally or otherwise? I am saving and dreaming for my ideal property in the future, and just the thought of constantly dealing with this crap makes it seem almost not even worth the time, $, or trouble..

Simple answer when someone says "I've always had a deal with the last owner to hunt here..." "Whatever deal you had was not recorded in the title conditions or closing documents when I bought the land, so your friend ended your deal when they sold the land. My conditions on this land required you to leave and not come back." Makes it not you that's the problem, and takes away that foothold in the argument "that you just didn't know the terms of your land surrender when you bought" - turns it around on the trespasser and the previous land owner.

The north private property line is not long with public land on other side. It is WELL marked with signs and yet it's a chronic problem. Do I call DNR for my county? Thanks Jeff.

The year after I bought my whitetail property the next door neighbor sent his hunters to my place and they poached a few deer. I caught them after hearing the shots and had them cited by the game warden. I may not be on good terms with the neighbors, but they haven't sent any hunters for past two years and haven't had a trespasser since. Hang 'em High! The cameras.

Would be funny to throw a stick through a bikers tire.. And watch it lock up and He flipped right off.. And then let the dogs have a snack.. Mostly sue the parents of the teens... And have the police info the parents to not give their minors dirt bikes.. if you don't have private land for them to ride on. Or get ready to pay the fines every time when they trespass.. Along with damages. Adults get jail time... Because they know better..

Jeff I have problems with coyote hunters dropping their dogs off at the gate of my property and then going around the next block and wait while their dogs run through my property. I have had pictures of them dropping the dogs off and pictures of deer running while the dogs were running around my land. I only get to the property every couple weeks so they know when I'm not around. The problem is the previous land owner allowed other people to hunt the property and I'm sure didn't know or didn't care about the coyote hunters. Not sure what to do about it, because I don't know who they are

I caught two trespassers turkey hunting on my property last spring. Both were armed with shotguns. They were dressed in full camo. They tried to tell me they thought it was their uncle's land. I told them I knew that was a load of bull because all hunters in my state are required to wear blaze orange, and neither of them were wearing blaze orange. I took photos of their truck, and license plate, and told them this was their only warning. The next time I was going to call the Sheriff and the Game Warden.

Just yesterday when I was leaving my property a silver 4 runner came up the road behind me, I was already down the road a ways, and they stopped in front of my property entrance and pulled over. I stopped in the road too and watched them. After about 30 seconds I put it in reverse and they kept going. I don't want to have to confront anybody. I won't be nice about it. I have signs very very visible from the road no trespassing

Caught trespassers on camera several times. Right after buying property. Two of which turned out to be my nieghbor and his son Not during hunting season. Ended up meeting them becoming very good friends. Before building our cabin he let me stay at his house during season because I live over hour away. So that turned out to be a good outcome. Still got one guy trying to find.

I have caught one person via camera on my land (40 acres) which is surrounded by 10's of thousands of acres of National Forest, did not pursue it because he never showed up again and the boundaries are not marked very well (yet) but my plan is to put a sign every 50 yards or so - we have a lot of mushroom hunters around here too - I would allow them in the spring to come and look for mushrooms but I would want them to be respectful and ask for permission... Also if someone on public land shoot a deer and it ran on my land, so long as they ask I would be happy to allow them to track the deer and even help them... it's all about respect and just being decent people.

I let all my neighbors who are mostly Amish know that i have cameras everywhere. They are nice people but they are the worst violators . They also know im retired Law Enforcement and let them believe i am a little crazy. I tell them all i wont call the game warden or cops on them. I tell them all i own a shovel and will bury you . Its good to let them know you have cameras all over and you are a bit crazy.

This year we had a hunter pull off the side of the road and shot a deer that was on our land. Well my uncle had shot at another deer and didn’t know if he hit it. My uncle found the deer that the other people shot.(We knew because of the entrance and exit hole.) Anyway the trespassers came back and saw our cameras while they were looking for the deer and stole the chip out of the camera. My relatives weren’t very happy but didn’t care when other people used dogs earlier this month to shoot coyotes. Have a great weekend and keep pumping the videos out!!!
