Good information, really depends on the individual's situation. My self, I have some apple trees to complement my existing food plots. 👍

A variety of fruit trees can drop fruit for 6 months or more .Most need full sun so if one was to put them in a food plot put them in the middle and not on the edge if shaded .I have hundreds of fruit and nut trees on 10 acres of food plots .Make sure you plant them far enough apart to get a tractor between them after they get big and even more if using a 10 ft no till drill .

An acre tree orchard or an acre food plot is going to have a limited season either way for the most part whether that be a limited amount of food if not a limited ripening/peak palatability time period. There are pros and cons outside of that with each. A food plot is expensive (fertilizer, equipment, herbicide, time, etc.) and you're somewhat at the mercy of mother nature (no rain, no food plot). However, you can create a large amount of food in a relatively small area. A big problem is it's only temporary. You're going to need to rotate what you grow too. An orchard takes time. it's a lot of work planting and protecting the first few years especially. Reality is that even if a tree starts producing at 5 years, it'll take more like 10 to get good quantity of food. You are also likely feeding coyotes, raccoons and other animals you may not be targeting. Orchards are also at the mercy of mother nature with late freezes, pests, and diseases (be sure to pick disease resistant varieties). On the plus side, it's very cheap once established, or over the life of the orchard compared to food plots. You can also pick a long time frame for fruit or nuts to drop (think of all the varieties of plum, apples, pears, persimmons, chestnuts and oaks)! It's hard to say which one is a better draw for deer. I suppose that depends on the particular location. If you have time and patience, plant trees. If you have money and equipment plant a food plot. If you're smart, plant both! "To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow"- Audrey Hepburn. “A man doesn’t plant a tree for himself. He plants it for posterity.” - Alexander Smith

I actually disagree about the cost of planting a food plot. Can be cheap if you already have equipment. If not there’s still cheap ways to do it. Trees are great attraction as mentioned in the video. But they are a limited resource in a deers diet. Fruit and nut trees can compliment a food plot. Planting only trees and having no other food is silly in my opinion. A batter option is increasing natural browse for 365 year round feeding with supplemental food plots.
@ChipsOutdoorChannel
@ChipsOutdoorChannel 3 жыл бұрын
@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors I agree that increasing natural browse is as good or a better option. That was not the topic of discussion of the video, so I didn't mention that. I agree though. Even with equipment, you'll need to buy seed every year and possibly fertilizer, lime, and herbicide depending on a number of variables. Even if you can do it cheap some years, it's an ongoing process. A food plot is a limited resource like trees. Don't get me wrong, food plots have their place, but so do trees (soft and hard mast). There's instances where planting only food plots makes sense and some where only planting fruit makes sense. I think we can both agree that diversity is the way to go if you want a great herd. If you just want a draw for deer at a certain time of year, either may be an option.

I’ve already replied to your last comment. I don’t have a tractor! And you don’t need a tractor to plant food plots. I don’t hunt big property. I have a 5 acres piece that I plant food plots on with a atv. If you wanna plant fruit trees go ahead.
