Who doesn’t want a doe factory? Good eating and great buck attractant during the rut.

I think you nailed it. I have a 1/3rd acre, half is popping buckwheat now and other half has clover. Big woods setting, I have about 15 different deer, buck and doe, visiting every day. They usually come in at different times but often enough it’s mixed. They chase each other sometimes but they always come back at some point.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Жыл бұрын
That’s right. They all live together they may mess with each other from time to time but totally normal. That big buck may come out at a different side, corner etc. But he won’t be pushed away as long as there’s minimal human pressure

Very interested in this topic/debate . Love the video . 👍🏼 I Never even thought this was a thing(doe factory) until I started watching KZbinrs. But man I got some lopsided ratios. . So it makes me wonder about the idea of a DFactory, but Also I have boring terrain features too which is not helping me for bucks
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Hey, so each area is different with buck to doe ratios. What appears to be a “doe factory” is just because the buck to doe ratio is screwed up. More bucks to does. My old house backed up to a state park. No habit improvements at all. Way more does then bucks that’s just how those areas are. 70-100 deer per square mile. Way more then the habitat can handle. When you start getting out into ag areas and big wilderness areas things change this is why I emphasized it’s very situational. 👊👊

I have a 10 acre spot in national forest with properties in 500 plus of surrounding acreage just growing trees no hunting or food plot and my 1/3 acre food plot is getting demolished, deer are on my land like a plague. I don’t know how I can grow anything without it being eaten up right away. I’m trying just buckwheat next to see if they will let it grow some
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Well wirh no hunting area like that it will be hard to even get a fall plot to grow they will just flock in and tear it up. Probably have a high number of deer per square mile which makes it tough

Every year that I plant summer food and fall food I see so many does during the season and few bucks. When I only plant fall food I see far less does and 3x the bucks during the season. In my opinion deer are more like people. When the old lady has her friends over most men go hide in the garage.

It probably differs by region and most video makers tend to ignore that, believing one size fits all no matter the region (pet peeve of mine). Here in the deep south with short mild winters and long summers we have so much natural food supply that summer plots are a waste of time and money (I do have separate dedicated clover plots, however, near my empty fall plots though to help them in spring/summer and to train them to keep coming to the same area year round). I promise you where ever the does are the bucks aren’t that far away, its just that they prefer solitude and peace away from the does (exception is the rut). Fall food plots work best because all the high protein natural food sources are gone and your plot is the only game in town. Its even more true in the northern states. Interesting to note here is that I raise sheep and almost always have 50/50 male to female ratio lamb crops. Then one year I fed the ewes and rams soybeans for several months prior to mating time. I had 95% female and 5% male lambs. That NEVER happened before in my 15 years of raising sheep (which are closely related to deer). I confirmed with a biologist that soybeans are extremely high in estrogen which tilted both the egg and sperm toward female lambs. So if your summer plot (as well as surrounding ag fields) are soybeans, guess what? You gonna have more female fawns than males. Just a thought. Sorry for the long book here.

I have always had summer food , but I've got 2 bucks for every doe , 90% of the bucks are not legal so shoot ( 3 point rule ) . I don't think summer plots hurt my spot .
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Nice info. I don’t think it hurts at all. That’s a good example of it being very situational and everywheee will have a different ratio
@brandonyoung7760 Жыл бұрын
The one particular KZbinr I think you might be referring to on many occasions has said if you own a big woods area and deer don't have enough food then utilizing a summer food source might be appropriate.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Don’t know. People were asking me and it’s a highly talked about subject so I gave my opinion on it. I mean it makes sense to have summer food in certain areas it’s very situational. But it also depends on how much your planting. If your planting a 1/4 acre plot it’s not going to have much effect. TSI work should be the start of a program for yearly food due to food plots being supplemental. But not everyone can cut timber due to leased property so food plots become the number 1 objective.
@brandonyoung7760 Жыл бұрын
@Whitetail obsession outdoors I agree. I have a 1/4 acre plot on 40 acres but the property covered on 3 sides with AG land in western Kentucky. I plant clover but it's literally just for a turkey attraction. I also plant fall food for the deer. Not to hold them on it but just to get them to grab a quick bite through the day

Think about it. With the MILLIONS of deer videos out on the web, ask yourself how many of them have you seen where does are chasing away bucks? Not many. Bucks just naturally avoid does (other than rut time) the older they get. They’re like old men who just want to be left alone in solitude and peace.

Mature does, especially 5+ year old, are critical to the overall success of your deer herd. Especially if your goal is to grow 5+ year old bucks. If you have property in an area where all your neighbors are managing for (or hunting for) mature bucks, then this is even more important. Protect older does, harvest younger does.
@KenMilligan-wq6of Жыл бұрын
Doe factory sounds good me ...where the does are the bucks will be and that's a fact
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Definitely ken. But there’s always a balance as well if your area has to many does per square mile the bucks don’t have to travel very far into to find a hot doe. Fewer does bucks have to actively search for a hot one which increases your chances of seeing more bucks. That’s why I tried to emphasize it’s all very situational. Hope you bust a nice buck this fall!
@nathanlester5054 Жыл бұрын
I believe that you are spot on Dave regarding the dreaded "doe factory", and that each property is unique, based on their individual circumstances. Me, i love having a doe factory! Why? Because the peak of the rut occurs at the same time every year and if you have the "girls", the boys will show up. Additionally, not all does will come into estrous at the same time, which will keep drawing in the boys longer than a typical 2 to 3 week period. Then the 2nd rut and trickle rut will be better as well.

You're right about one size doesn't fit all. I would tend to think that people that came up with that summer theory do not understand spring dispersal or how different a doe family group is from a buck. I've been talking to a woman I see that lives in a populated area where's there's no hunting. She is active & outside quite a bit. 2 weeks ago she was walking her old Shepard on a park trail & an adult doe cut her off. She then turned & the doe escorted her & the dog away. After she moved over 100 feet the doe stopped & stared @ her. I told her that the doe had a fawn or 2 in the area. Within a week in her car on the road near her 🏡 she had a fawn almost run into her front tire. Same person had never seen a buck in her area except during late winter a few months ago when 80" of snow trapped deer in spots & made it hard for them to move. She had 3 bucks on one day that ended up by her bird feeder. I haven't liked large plots. Gives deer too much of an area to skirt around u. Putting a 1/4 acre fall plot in a good area is ideal. Planting one crop of Buckwheat in the spring & terminate it by crimping & following it up with another crop of Buckwheat in the summer can leave u with a great fall plot & it wasn't there all summer to attract unwanted guests. It's also just a much more natural way of doing things. If u have 200 or more acres u could do 2 or 3 small plots to help u with entry depending on wind direction. But I would let cameras do the scouting & stay out as much as possible.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Yeah I think small Plots vs big plots is very situational as well. Some properties need destination plots and some need just little kill plots. Everything is very situational 👊👊🙏
