Akbar Ahmed is still living in the past; right today 2 Ahmedias have been lynched and a Hindu family forcibly converted to Islam. No mention of Bangladesh where introduction of Urdu by Jinnah sowed the seeds of separation. What Mr Jinnah succeeded by dividing 600 million Muslims in three equal divisions.

Nice discussion. But Prof Akbar giving emphasis on (pan) Islamic Identity over (regional) Ethnic Identity (on the same old lines of Allama Iqbal) is problematic, almost bigotry. That's the problem for Indian Muslims, s/he identifies more with Islam rather than India. Akbar is praising Jinnah so much? It's Jinnah who told Bangladeshis to embrace Urdu over Bengali, on similar logic of Akbar to put Islamic Identity above Ethnic Identity. Pakistan should learn from that. What Islamic World needs is a statesman like Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, not the bigoted suggestions of Prof Akbar. Thanks. 🙏

In case you folks have not noticed - Islam has been withering away since the fall of the Mughals and Nizam of Hydrabad in IN - and has completely collapsed with the collapse of the Caliphate in Turkey in early 20th century. The whole Jihadi movement was in reaction to its increased irrelevence - which Huntington's "Clash of Civilization" theory has fully crushed whatever of it was left. Now Islam and Islamic countries are behind by more than 200+ years with the rest of the world and are fully irrelevent and marginalized - with no hope of ever catching up with either the west or the more progressive civilizations.
