This always makes me cry. She channeled the spirit of Donny Hathaways original live version at the Troubadour (which is also incredible), while also making it uniquely her own. As a prelude to American sporting events, few have topped one delivered by singer Whitney Houston when she sang the Star-Spangled Banner before Super Bowl XXV in January, 1991 in Tampa, Florida. Her rendition came at a particular patriotic time, just 10 days after the US entered the Gulf War overseas. Released as a single, it was re-released after the September 11th terrorist attacks. Her incredible voice mixed with a bare minimum of extraneous notes was a performance to remember. Following her performance during the Super Bowl, Houston decided to carry it over into a concert to honor the troops and their families, and the government and military dignitaries in honor of those returning from the Gulf War. I've always said that she and Gladys Knight have always been the most emotive singers in the industry. The way they approach the lyrics with so much passion and delivering the message of a song. Never having to do extra runs and screaming and hollering, falling out and rolling on the floor etc. They didn't have to act like they were about to fly away, their voice made you fly. They simply just stood or sat there and you would just be in awe!

It bugs me when people have the AUDACITY to compare Mariah Carey to her. While I'm a fan of Mariah, I do not believe in ANY capacity that she could come near performances like this. This is what sets them apart. Whitney was a SANGER. She could just sit on a stool with a mic, and SANG. Everything from her lyrical phrasing, to the way she holds her notes, is just MASTERFUL. But above ALL, is her tone. It is like NOBODY before her or after her.
