Leon Russell was so taken by this live version by Whitney of A Song For You that he sat down and wrote her a letter! "The concert, held live at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia on March 31, 1991, was broadcast live on HBO. Russell watched the broadcast, along with millions of others, and witnessed her live performance of “A Song For You.” He was so moved that he sat down and wrote her a letter of appreciation on how much he enjoyed her rendition, which he said he never did. He said never in his wildest dreams did he ever imagine one of his songs being performed that both brought tears to his eyes and sent chills up his spine." I think that really says a lot!! She was very special!

This always makes me cry. She channeled the spirit of Donny Hathaways original live version at the Troubadour (which is also incredible), while also making it uniquely her own. These military guys got such a beautiful and amazing treat to get to see her perform live. Im so jealous and wished i cld have had the chance to experience her singing live. I've always said that she and Gladys Knight have always been the most emotive singers in the industry. The way they approach the lyrics with so much passion and delivering the message of a song. Never having to do extra runs and screaming and hollering, falling out and rolling on the floor etc. They didn't have to act like they were about to fly away, their voice made you fly. They simply just stood or sat there and you would just be in awe!

It bugs me when people have the AUDACITY to compare Mariah Carey to her. While I'm a fan of Mariah, I do not believe in ANY capacity that she could come near performances like this. This is what sets them apart. Whitney was a SANGER. She could just sit on a stool with a mic, and SANG. Everything from her lyrical phrasing, to the way she holds her notes, is just MASTERFUL. But above ALL, is her tone. It is like NOBODY before her or after her.

You know what's absolutely different about Whitney to other singers ..... she is consistent throughout the entire song she is singing....never a boring time or section.
