Fun fact , Her mom was indeed with her at this appearance. She was backstage however the band wasn't playing at the right tempo at the beginning part of the song. Cissy went over to the band and started directing them. If you look behind Whitney's right shoulder towards the end of the song (when the camera is str8 forward) the shadow directing the band is Her mom.

The skit with Pam was a kind of parody of sorts especially with that hair😂. Home was originally sung by the legendary Ms. Stephanie Mills aka Michael Jackson’s first and only black young love. Whitney was about 19 or 20 and this was her debut appearance. The song choice was deliberate and planned to showcase her gift and voice type amongst the black women in Soul and R&B. This was a “safe” song and a smart choice to introduce the world to a potential crossover Pop phenomenon to become a National Treasure known as “The Voice” . Her mom Cissy was her greatest influence and teacher. After all, her 1st cousin Dionne Warrick, . was the first black female crossover singer, so with that voice, support, tutelage and yes genetics, too , was a perfect combination to create what she became. The Greatest Singer of our time. No one could emote and touch hearts across cultures and ethnicities quite like her and the quality of her voice was truly a gift from the LORD whom she loved and always publicly acknowledged Him at every opportunity it seems. Whitney told the story of this performance. The band playing behind the curtain started off too slow. That's why it seemed she held back in the beginning. They dragged so much that you can actually see her mother Cissy Houston directing the band at the end to pick the pacing so Whitney could build to the height of the song. I love this performance so much.
