Mariah was discouraged by "some" industry people when first entering the biz before her demo/around that time that she was too similar sounding to Whitney to really break through as a solo artist in the record company's eyes... they were wrong. They weren't saying she sounded identical but it was very similar style. And mostly ballade.

Not a question I would have EVER entertained. Whitney was a GIFTED vocalist and song interpreter but she was not a songwriter. Mariah is a gifted vocalist, songwriter & interpreter. A songwriter approaches music from a much different perspective than a non-songwriter. A songwriter may at times might hit a brick wall but it's ALWAYS temporary....If you re born a song writer, you die a song writer.

Correction…Mariah is NOT a gifted vocalist…she’s ok…but true singers know that she is a much better songwriter than singer
@jamesbrown-jw4sz3 ай бұрын
@@mlh1367 Umm, your statement is also FALSE.....Each songwriter is different, some songwriters NEVER experience writer's block much less ALL the time (I come from a family full of musicians, my grandfather could master any wind instrument by the time he was 10yo (He started writing songs in his teens, NEVER experienced a block) His daughter (my mother) gravitated to string instruments and could play the mandolin by 6, guitar the year after and violin, cello by 10yo (She is also a songwriter but has to be inspired. My baby brother plays NO instruments but started writing songs in his teens, he does not need to be inspired, but says he feels more creative after a blunt. While i play no instruments and do not consider myself musically inclined, i have written songs, thus far i have never experienced writer's block. Songwriting is a gift, writer's block is typically only experienced when it's forced.

I think it's a compliment to both ladies to be compared at that time since they were both at their vocal peaks. Mariah at her peak had probably the most amazing tonality and her range was just mindboggling. Whitney at her best could make you FEEL a song like no other singer could and her power was simply unmatched while her sweet low-range head tones just tickled the ears. I will say that Whitney was spot on at the beginning of this video when talking about the inflections and runs. When I first hear Vision of Love, there were a few scant moments that I thought Mariah sounded just like Whitney. And in the best way possible.
