I remember this cut! Summer 1985!! I was 17 years old, working a summer job in Columbus, Ohio. A brand new silver BMW E325 was cruising down the street blasting this song!! And that's when I knew...Whitney Houston had a smash!!! You can say what you want about Clive Davis, even though he should have cancelled that Grammy's Afterparty the night she died! The man is still a Genius!! The album was certified diamond for shipments of 10 million units or more on March 16, 1999, and later 14× Platinum by the (RIAA) Recording Industry Association of America on January 27th, 2023! With sales of over 25 million copies worldwide, Whitney Houston is one of the best-selling albums of all time!! Rest In Peace, Whitney "Nitty" Houston!!

@Steve I don't know what your racist ass is talking about but Whitney looks very much like a black woman. And she broke quite few barriers. One was being on MTV. MTV did not play black artists when it first started out. First Michael Jackson broke that barrier and Whitney and Tina Turner were some of the only black women MTV would play. MTV didn't play videos by Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Stephanie Mills and other black women. So yes Whitney broke down barriers for black women in the music business.

Your words made me happy weepy. It's an awesome day when you say no way! My mother gave me a great "mantra" when I was quite young. She had taught me to say "Satan get thee behind me!" if evil is in my face. (Unfortunately, I didn't always see the evil.) Flash forward to Jan 20, 1997. It was the day I woke up and didn't use again. Each day I'd say "Thank you, Lord, for another day, and will you please see me through another!?" Some of the times it was not those exact words but still the exact meaning. I have still not used. I turned 56 a week ish ago, although I may not have made it to 30 had I not quit using. I used to tell people who didn't feel their one digit day(s) or month(s) were that impressive: "Any time is awesome time whether it be a day, a week, or a year+." I'd still say that to people, but I can't go out and about like I used to. Rotoscoliosis limits my daily life, so I don't even think about having a social life. However, I still smile often because I believe I'm not given more than I can handle. Congratulations to you!!!

@@loveinautumn3978 Andy S is wrong. She had no equal in America. There are plenty of foreign singers from the 80s and 90s with powerhouse vocals who have become legends in their respective countries. There will never be another Whitney, or Mariah, or Celine but in the phillipines for example there will also never be another Regine Valesquez ie Queen Regine, Asias Songbird. She has shaped the whole filipino music industry and is powerhouse vocal in her own right. You wont see female singers with big voices in the philipines trying to imitate whitney or Mariah like they do in the Western world, they imitate Regine. Brian Mcknight sang with Regine and said that she was one of the greatest singers he had ever heard, and put her in the same league as Mariah. Whitney Houston transports human beings to another world, universe even. She's the greatest.
Anybody who remembers that era, the first few notes, that sound just sends you through an instant time warp. Real R&B that envelops you like a warm breeze; caresses your soul. From the instrumentation to (of course) Whitney's phenomenal vocals, this song is romance personified. Not sexual just a pure feeling.

And that's when I knew...Whitney Houston had a smash!!! The album was certified diamond for shipments of 10 million units or more on March 16, 1999, and later 14× Platinum by the (RIAA) Recording Industry Association of America on January 27th, 2023. Digital downloads are now counted as sales, so that is probably where you got your total from. The sad reality is...Whitney Houston never wrote a single verse of any of her lyrics! Her late father was stealing money from her, even on his deathbed! He was suing her for $100 Million! Her estate was not entitled to any publishing or royalties from her album sales. She made the bulk of her fortune, from touring. 😔 🤔 Her family had to monetize her name , intellectual properties and image to generate money for her estate! She never owned any publishing or master recordings!
