I used to think I was ugly until this older lady at church came up to me and grabbed my hand and asked if I was my grandmothers grabddaughter. I said yes, and she looked so happy and she said, 'you look just like her when she was younger, she was my next door neighbor when she first moved here after she was married.' After that I thought how dare I think I'm ugly, if I look just like the most gentle, sweet and loving woman I've ever known. Sometimes i really hate my chubby face and thin lips... but when I see pics of her, she looks just the same and I think she was beautiful and always looked joyful. ❤️❤️❤️

Natively Natural (mcfarlingirl) had the same problem. Every time I looked in the mirror I hated what I saw because I hated my father. I did a lot a things to myself out of self hatred. But no regrets just growth and progress. So glad you overcame your problem☺ You're gorgeous. Blessings to you.

Whitney this is so beautiful- I loved this! I wonder if anyone else experienced this in our generation, but growing up, confidence and being cocky were deemed as the same thing and was frowned upon. I'm 29 and JUST now realizing the difference between the two. Cockiness is walking into a room and saying, "Yeah... everybody will like me... yeah you like me... you know you do". I really appreciate this video. As an adoptee, seeing this point was really hard because the people you live with isn't the face you see in the mirror. I felt it finally when my daughter wrote a project about how much she looked like me (she's my twin) and she loved the way she looked BECAUSE she looked like her mom. I cried so hard when I read it. My baby thinks I'm beautiful and she's proud to look like me! It is humbling and eye-opening and it makes me so much more comfortable in my skin because of her.

Motherhood is such a gift in the way it gives us a living breathing mirror of ourselves. I have always thought I was "pretty" because I looked like my grandmother and I was her namesake and, honestly, because people have always told me I was. Once I had my daughter and she could articulate the things she thought were beautiful, it framed my idea of beauty differently. It also made me "carry" my beauty in a different way, from a different perspective. I began to be intentional about not only doting on her when she was in a fancy dress with pretty bows and perfectly combed hair...but also, and especially when she first woke up in the morning without any adornments. She's beautiful to us, but I'm pretty sure we have planted the idea in her that even if no one else agrees, she's the most perfect HER that could have been created.

Thank you Whit! This was positive and empowering. I am a unique blend of my parents. African American with a tinge of native american, I always loved my cheekbones, red brown undertones and my smile but other parts of me really challenged my self-confidence. It wasn't into my 30's where I said, I owe it to myself to love myself. I'd be a fool to continue beating myself up or apologizing for how I look. You spoke of a scientific reason to love how we look - we are each a physical representation or walking fingerprint of our ancestors. I love that! I think of it scientifically too. A part of self-preservation is nurturing and caring for one's self. To me it's like sunlight. We see what happens to a flower or plant that doesn't get enough sunlight. It dies. So me loving myself is necessary for my survival. Great perspective!

This is great, Whitney! I, too, found beauty in the features I didn't care for in myself once I had my son. He passed away just two days after he was born, but his features were pretty pronounced for a newborn and they were a reflection of myself. Now every time I look at myself, I think of him and remember that my "imperfections" are not a mistake, they are intentional. (Psalms 139:13-14)

I have blessedly been confident in my looks because I used to always say, to men especially, this is how I look because of my genes, I can't help how I came out, I have no control of the cooking, I'm a mixture of MY mom and dad. So, if you want a different combination I ain't mad go find that but I will not allow you to try and make me feel any kinda way about how I look. So many feels. My mom is my best friend, but I don't have a relationship with my bio father and I look just like him! Lol! Especially when I gain weight. What you said about looking exactly how I'm supposed to, clicked for me. I used to hate that I looked like him and have actually avoided mirrors and spending any length of time looking at my face because it would make me so sad to think of him, but this helped me so much mentally. Im sharing this with a few others who share my same issue. I love who I am on the inside, but have struggled with those features on the outside that look like him. It's really helpful to think of carrying forward those features into my future and making what I want of it, of my life and legacy. I look how I'm supposed to and that feels really good! Growing up in the Caribbean, I was made fun of because of my thick lips. That was a long time ago, Fast forward to today, I have a teenage daughter who has the same lips and she loves them. Finally lips are in and I get compliments. You have to feel comfortable in my own skin. I rarely wear make up. You have to be your authentic self, plastic surgery and make up cannot cover insecurity. We have to get over the notion that to be beautiful, we have to fit into the European ideal. Great topic!!

This is a great topic, as a black woman I'm often told I'm not thick enough in hips, legs, butt. Why blacks focus on big boots image for women? If your slim then you can't be all black. I'm so glad that you address the physical image topic. I've never wore makeup yet and I can see the younger women burying their God given natural beauty under makeup daily. Women are born with so many unique beauty features and don't even realize it. It makes you more beautiful being different instead of looking like everyone else. This is deep Whitney. it made me think I have never liked the way I look in many different ways because I never knew my dad and I look EXCACTLY like him and don't have good feeling towards him so my issue with this runs deep. Love. This. --Just yesterday while washing my 'wanna always loc up' hair, I started to cry because I missed my M'ma. She had the same hair and each time I work in my hair, I think of her. Beautiful video. I didn't reach a point of acceptance until I was around 30 years old. I was envying all these traits that were sought after in mainstream media, and finally it dawned on me that we aren't all supposed to look alike. We were all created different for a purpose. Thank you so much for this video, Whitney. It brought tears to my eyes. It confirmed a lot of my own thoughts. I have lost both of my parents and I miss them so much. But when I look in the mirror, I see them both in me. And it warms my heart.

I don't usually comment, but I totally relate to this video. i have always struggled with my appearance and I look at my daughters and see beautiful young women, however, I have never seen any part of me in them. I appreciate your analogy and say thank you for giving me a better appreciation for who I am and who and what I represent. Thanks for being as beautiful as you are.
