Orome does not come from Turkish. It comes from the Arabic "الروم" pronounced as "Ar-Room" and transliterated as "Ar-Rum". There is a full chapter (Chapter 30) in the Muslim Holy Book the Quran called Ar-Rum I.e the Romans in which it is prophesized that the Romans will defeat the Persians. The begining of Surah (Chapter) 30 goes like this: "Alif-Lam-Mim (1) The Romans have been defeated (2) in a nearby land. Yet following their defeat, they will triumph (3) within "Bidh'a" (a few) years. The whole matter rests with Allah before and after ˹victory˺. And on that day the believers will rejoice (4). This Surah (Chapter 30) was revealed after the Arab Polytheists rejoiced and gloated when the Persians defeated the Romans. Islam considers Christians (Romans in this case) People of the Book (Scripture) just like Muslims and the Persians as Polytheists. So Arab Polytheists mocked the Muslims and said our Gods defeated your "One God; God of Scriptue". During 611-623 the Persians had the upper hand and by 623 AD the Persians drove the Romans out of Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Rhodes and entered Anatolia. But in 627 the Romans crushed the Persians at the battle of "Nineveh" and the Muslims rejoiced in this Roman victory. Note: The Arabic word "Bidh'a" refers to a time period between 3 and 9 years. So, the prophecy did come true.

As a Greek from the Caucasus (pontic) i am happy to see a video about our cousins in Ukraine. I want to point out that many Greeks in the former USSR area are not included in demographics as Greeks because they identify to an extent as Russians, this has been the case since the Russian Empire era. Also the USSR didnt just target Greeks out of the blue, it was due to the pro tsarist/conservative sentiment of most of the community which the soviet government saw as a potential threat hence why many were moved to Central Asia. Unfortunantly as you said Greeks have been targeted since the fall of the USSR by many people holding nationalist ideology, in Georgia there had been pogroms commited against Greeks in the 90s and many moved mostly to either Greece or Russia (some fought with the Abkhazians too), this has boosted the pro Russian sentiment of many Pontic Greeks today.

Most people in Abkhazia were not friendly towards the government of Georgia, none of the minority groups liked Georgian nationalism. Also what do you mean Russia attacked Abkhazia? The Abkhaz themselfs took arms since the state didnt want to retain the status of semi autonomy and they felt under threat, or do you perhaps imply that the Russian army was behind everything because thats ludicrous.
@warfootagee2 жыл бұрын
There is not even one documented evidence that a single Greek took up Arms against Georgia. You are repeating Russian propaganda. 300,000 Georgians were forced out from their houses and land. @@chiwolf1897 Well yeah,there was a civil war when Sheverdnadze's nationalists aka criminals like the Mihidroni ousted the legitimate goverment of Gamksahurdia from power.Gamsahurdia despite his nationalist rhetoric had reached an agreement with the Abkhazians but it all went to hell when the communists and the radical nationalists allied and made a coup.I have many Greek friends from Georgia,the community is still quite large and very pro-Georgian,i assume you refer to the ones that left.which have bitter memories due to the war and i am ashamed to say it's well founded.Shevardnadze created local military groups which were made of radicals and criminals that were freed from jail to fight..Russia supported the seperatists by sending mercenaries,aircraft and warships,this has been well documented,you can look it up,even Russians reporters themselves admit to this,nationalist disputes occured because of Russia policies,a divided Caucasus is a controllable Caucasus afterall.Politics#People.Just look at the Georgian disputed areas,Armenian's and Arzebaijna's disputed areas,Ossetians and Inguishetians,Chechenya and Dagistan,Icheria and Circassians etc.America does the same thing in Africa and Asia as well.Georgians suffered a genocide as well in Abkhazia when the peace treaty of 1992 was violated(20.000 dead,300.000 kicked out) and the legitimate govt in Abkhazia was executed in a savage manner many of whom were pro-Georgian Armenians or Abkhaz .The army and heavy artilery had retreated based on the agreements(the war had been all but won with the 1.000 Abkhazians and Armenians having only Apinacota)leaving only small detachments but the Abkhazians along with the 6.000 mercenaries(NCF) sent from Yeltsin violated the treaty.The Abkhazians took up arms because they wanted to stay within Russia,their own autonomous status were given by Stalin and Lenin(they were the orchestrators of this situation) and they enjoyed great representation levels in local authorities despite being a minority compared to the Georgian majority.What you said is very interesting,i know a lot of Greco-Georgians who fought on the side of Georgia during the war but not Greeks who fought on the side of the seperatists,very interesting.As for the rest,Greeks were not targeted because their Tsarist sympathies but because they were thought of as being as spies of the anti-Soviet block(it was stupid to say the least)Greetings from another Greek from Caucasus.I guess your relatives stayed within Abkhazia.I hope you one day get your belongings back although the apartheid regime that has been established there(no voting rights to the Armenians and Georgians living there) will prove a hinderance.P.S.When our friend refers to Abkhazians,he refers to Mingrelians,Laz and Svans since Abkhazia is a geographical term not including only the Armenians and the Abkhaz living in the area.Fortunately,the days of post communism nationalist are gone and the people are moving forward.It's my firemost hope that Ukraine's Greek minority survives,we have been there since the stablishment of the Cimmerian and the Pontic Kingdom,may both the Pontic and Urum communities survive.

As a greek, You can clearly understand that the names of some ukraine cities are greek.... example Mariu-pol, simferu-pol, sevasto-pol, Niko-Pol... do you see the pattern?? In greek mariu-polis simferu-polis etc... "polis" in greek means "city'. I just picked some random cities with eye-catching greek names-combinations. In many foreign languages, they cut the end letters of words that are in greek. Niko - polis = Victory City (if we break up to greek words) Sevasto - polis = Respespected City Symfero - polis = Misfortuned City And the list goes on... Do not forget that in old Greece, Greeks were considering themselves as the "Great nation of the sea"... so they were more interested in places that touch the water... or close to the sea.. you can clearly see that influence if you start picking cities that are close to the sea ;) Odesa was also the place where some secret meetings started for the modern revolution of Greece.

Sorry, but some of your information here is wrong. The Greek colonies on the northern Black Sea coast were largely Archaic foundations (possibly late 7th, certainly 6th century BC), and there was never any general polity known as Pontos from the 4th century BC to the 13th AD. If you are thinking of the Pontic Empire, or Pontic Kingdom (the only time when the Black Sea littoral was unified to some extent under a single state) that was in the late 2nd and first half of the 1st century BC under Mithridates VI Eupator. You might be confusing the Bosporan Kingdom (which was founded in the 5th but grew more prosperous in the 4th century BC) with Pontos, but this was restricted to the Cimmerian Straits and the Sea of Azov littoral and only lasted until the Gothic invasions in the 3rd-4th centuries AD.

So I always figured a connection with pontic Greeks. There used to live a lot of Greeks in Georgia but a lot of them have moved away in the past couple of decades like my family did. Do you happen to know anything about why Greeks ended up in Georgia and why they moved since? I couldn't really figure it out in Wikipedia but I suspect that it has to do with WW1.

It mostly has to do with forced migrations under Stalin and offcourse due to political reasons after WWII. But anyway the region has ties with Greece and the Eastern Roman empire with alot intermarriage. Fun fact Constantine Paleologos the last Roman emperor, just afew months before the siege of Constantinople, tried to arrange a marriage with a Georgian princess. The arrangements were sucessful but the bride was not able to reach the city because the siege had begun. The man who wrote the chronicle of the siege George Sphrantzes, was the one who acted as an ambassador for the match. He was a personal friend of the emperor.

@@joek600 Where there forced migrations from pontic Greeks out of the north of Turkey In to Georgia?
@joek6002 жыл бұрын
@SvP People from that area usually fled to Russia and Georgia to avoid forced conventions to Islam and oppression. The ottomans might allowed to Christians and Jews to exist but they had to pay a (keep your) head tax. Christians were basically second class citizens. They had no chance against a muslim at court, their fortune could be confiscated on a whim, and whatever privileges granted, like learning Greek at school, withdrawn whenever the local ottoman ruler felt like. Even Greeks who were essential for the ottoman society, because of their trading connection, seamanship or education and had considerable fortunes, could lose everything suddenly. That’s why many Greek populations withdrew to mountainous barren sites, where they had minimum interactions with the Turks, or fled to Russia and Georgia, or Italy. Especially after the fall of Constantinople many migrated to Venetian controlled regions, or joined mercenary bands of Stradioti, the Italian used name of stratiotes ‘’soldiers’’. Thomas of Argos reached Scotland fighting for Henry VIII and in his campaigns in France.

Do the Hungarians in Ukraine support Orban now that the two countries are opposed?

As a hungarian I can confidently say that most Hungarians left after the war. Even before the war many of them emigrated to Hungarian. The general attitude towards the war is that "this is not our war, we have nothing to do with it". This opinion is echoed since Crimea. And many of them are strong Orbán supporters. Mind you they can vote in hungarian elections where the opposition feared that the "ukraians" (hungarinas from Zakarpatska) will make Orbán win. Orbán invested a lot into there and gave them citizenship, they are flooded with Hungarian money. Of course it's a generalisation but this is the overall picture.

That is totally wrong! The USSR was behind the help that the greek communists received through Yugoslavia, Albania and Bulgaria during the greek civil war. The communist party of Greece was actually in full accordance with the communist party of the Soviet Union. The communists in Greece could do nothing without the permission of the Kremlin, as it was proven again a couple of months ago by Dr Sergey Radchenko. The revelations the distinguished professor of Johns Hopkins University made in late January 2022 is a very interesting story for Cold War enthusiasts.

Greek-russian people had told me their own version about the Stalin purge of greek population: 1) Since tsarist Russia (and also Soviet Union for quite a few years after that) didn't have an adequate system of population census & keepin up records, a vast portion of greeks settling in Ukraine/southern Russia (after escaping ottoman/turkish purges) througout the years never got proper papers (IDs etc.), neither did they ever enlist in the army. 2) Greeks of the region use to keep a low-profile, "minding their own business and not interfering in russian/soviet affairs". (Of course many Greeks joined Bolshevik revolution or the Great Patriotic War, but not all of them). This mentality may seem prudent at times, but in cases of major crises (like WWII) had a nasty result: russian/ukrainian people consider them not-patriotic enough, aloofers who refuse their share of the common burden! 3) Therefore, when Stalin started purging Greeks, most people of majority ethnicities were not supportive or sympathetic towards them (especially after WWII, when quite a few Greeks didn't join the army, since they were not registered). 4) Another thing was that Stalin regime didnt't openly condemn Greeks, sending them to exile under some formal accusation: on the contrary, they were told they were selected, due to their advanced cultural level, to "civilise/modernise" the more buckward territories of the USSR (namely in central Asia), presenting their exile as a kind of "honorary mission" that no-one would dare to openly object or refuse! 5) Except people of pontian origin, most greek political refugees after 1949 were settled in Uzbekistan (!), especially in the city of Tashkend - although, in general, they were scatterd all around USSR (and other east-block countries). A big part of them returned to Greece after 1982 (when the socialist goverment under Andreas Papandreou canceled all legal residues of the civil war). Most of those who didn't, alongside pontian Greeks, were force to return after the collapse of the Soviet Union, due to the deteriorationg of standards of living in the 1990s...

Interesting I'd always wondered how come the Romans spread Latin in Western Europe but Greek didn't spread in the same way. I guess there were pockets of ethnic Greeks but over time they got assimilated. I think it's a great disservice to history to suppress cultures and languages because we lose a part of our collective human story.

Good point. The Greeks did not impose their language although it was the lingua franca in vast areas for many centuries. However they gave their language to numerous nations by assimilating the Greek language into theirs without loosing their original phonetics, pronunciation etc. Slavic languages, languages of the Near East, have this influence but it does not show prominently. In any case also Latin is a cousin of Greek so all European languages carry the Greek DNA.
@nikospapageorgiou23452 жыл бұрын
The reason for that is that the Easter Roman Empire fell. Romance languages also disappeared from zones that were conquered by a different culture: For example the African Romance language disappeared after Arabs conquered the area. Similarly, the Hellenistic and the Eastern Roman (Byzantine), Greek-speaking world got slowly swallowed by Muslims, Arabs, Turks, and a bit by Slavs.

Main conclusion: different ethnic and religious groups have lived alongside each other for thousands of years including moslems and christians. There of course have been from time to time frictions but in the last 150 years western european big powers began to weaponise these differences for their own ends of carving up and dominating territories. This has reached a new peak from the 1990s on with the series of predatory US and NATO regime change wars in the Middle East. Stalinism has a lot to answer for too. Patrick Lancaster on YT is in Mariupol reporting daily. Hospital staff have said in interviews that the AZOV - Ukraine forces took over at least 2 hospitals moving patients and staff to the basements. May we support each other in our diversity and stand firm against divide and rule measures of all kinds.

Exactly the communists received support from Tito and Bulgaria, the soviets wanted nothing to do with them and that was their greatest grievance towards USSR.
