From the ural mountains and the volga river, the slavs charted a perilous journey to spread through all of eastern Europe, eventually coming to dominate most of the continent. This video delves deeper into the subsequent southern migration to the Balkans, hinting at the proto Serbian and Croatian states that would begin to appear.

Note 2:48 the picture shown of Emperor Maurice is actually Tsar Simeon the first (Bulgarian of the Krum Dynasty first to hold the title Tsar/Kessar/Συμεών/Ceasar equal to Emperor) His greatest achievement is the creation of the Cyrilic alphabet and spreading Christianity through Slavs , along with many military victories . Slavs called themselves Slovieni according to early viking and other tribal findings (the earliest mention collectively agreed upon is by Procopius 6 AD) , as well known Slavs led peaceful (mostly) life thus they became prime target of raids the result lots of slaves (contrary to popular belief not by vikings at first but turkic/nomadic tribes) these slaves where introduced on the Byzantine market and by coincidence the pronounciation of Slovien(Словиен/Словйен) and Sclaveni (latin meaning slave) and Sklaboi (Σκλάβοι Greek meaning slave) was close enough to create the misconception that Slavic people refer themselves as slaves. I took history as a hobby and i am obsessed by the mysterious emerging of peaceful farmers numbering millions (He portrays them as unusually tall and strong, of dark skin and reddish hair, leading a rugged and primitive style of life and constantly covered in dirt, living in squalid huts which were isolated from one another, and often changing their place of abode 'Procopius The excursus (digression) book VII) who came seemingly out of nowhere.

What people don't understand is that modern states although claiming ancestry from certain tribes or people, in actuality their nations formed through interaction between many tribes and peoples. France for example had Franks, Germans, Latins from the Italian peninsula. Modern day Britain from Celts, Scandinavians, Romans, Germans, In the Balkans there were Germans, Goths, Slavs, Romans, Thracians, Greeks. You can understand the picture.

The arrival of the Serbs and Croats was heralded by their triumph over the Pannonian Avars in Lower Pannonia and South of the Danube: "The war with Persia in 600-614 strained the Roman resources and thus denuded the coast of soldiers, therefore the Avars and Slavs inroads had ravaged as they pleased under Heraclius (610-640), who had called in the latter to drive out the Avars, Narona, Salona, Epidaurus, Burnum, and Rhizinium were destroyed. In 641 Pope John IV., a Dalmatian by birth, sent Abbot John to Istria and Dalmatia to ransom prisoners and collect relics. The Croats and Serbs exterminated the Avars South of the Danube in the middle of the seventh century and delivered the province, the Croats occupying the west to the river Cetina, the Serbs the east from the Cetina to Albania. A century and a half later, Wonomyrus Sclavus/Vojnomir, the duke of all Slavs of Lower Pannonia and a vassal of Charlemagne, would devastate Avar dominions between the Danube and Tisza in 795 and is responsible for defeating the Avars a year later, and delivering nearly all of Pannonia to the Frankish Empire.” Sources: The Royal Frankish Annals, De Administrando Imperio, an Outline of the Early history and migration of the Slavs by Karl Heinrich Menges, the Land Between: Slovenia by Oto Luthar, and the Shores of the Adriatic, the Austrian Side, The Kustenlande, Istria, and Dalmatia by Frederick Hamilton Jackson.

Slavs and Slaves. This is a Western Freudian reservation. Different tribes have a self-name and what their neighbors call them. 'Slavs' are undoubtedly a self-designation. No nation in the world called itself a Slave. The Slavs had many tribes. All of them could understand the language of another Slavic tribe. That is why, in general, they called themselves Slavs (in ENGLISH) or 'Slovyane' - the root of "Slovo", i.e. Word, i.e. able to speak. Everyone who did not understand the Slavic language was called Niemcy (i.e. dumb or unable to speak). But later only Germanic tribes began to be called by this word in the Slavic lang. Of the Slavs' neighbors, only the Byzantine Empire had technological and cultural superiority. All the other European tribes were just as savage barbarians. Perhaps even less culturally and technologically developed.

Genetic evidence demonstrated that modern Slavs exhibit genetic continuity with cultures inhabiting their lands during the Bronze Age. The ancestors of Slavs had been living in Eastern and Central Europe for thousands of years before the wandering of peoples, but had remained out of reach from Roman historians or were grouped with other people groups.

@@en6064 Haplogroup I2a1b-L621-Slavs This branch is found overwhelmingly in Slavic countries. Its maximum frequencies are observed among the Slavs (Slovenes, Croats, Bosniaks, Serbs, Montenegrins and Macedonians) as well as in Bulgaria, Romania, Moldavia, western Ukraine and Belarus. It is also common to a lower extent in Albania, Greece, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and south-western Russia. I2-L621 (L147.2+). The principal determining event that allowed I2a1b-L621 to become a major Eastern European lineage was probably the Slavic migrations from the 6th to the 9th century CE. The minority of I2a1b-L621 individuals negative for L147.2 are all found around eastern Poland, Belarus and western Ukraine, suggesting that this is where this lineage survived since the Chalcolithic. The I2a1b-L147.2 subclade seems to have expanded very fast from 1900 years ago, which is concordant with the timing of the Slavic ethnogenesis, considering that it takes a few centuries before one man can have enough male descendants to start having an impact at the scale of a population. This I2-L147.2 ancestor would have such an impact on the burgeoning Early Slavic population, still small 2,300 years ago, but booming. After the Germanic tribes living in eastern Germany and Poland, like the Goths, the Vandals and the Burgundians, invaded the Roman Empire, the Slavs living further east filled the vacuum. Following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in 476, the Slavs moved in the Dinaric Alps and the Balkans. By the 9th century, the Slavs occupied all modern Slavic-speaking territories, apart from the eastern Balkans under the control of the Turkic-speaking Bulgars. Nowadays northern Slavic countries have between 9% (Poland, Czech republic) and 21% (Ukraine) of I2a-L621, while southern Slavs have between 20% (Bulgaria) and 50% (Bosnia). The higher percentage of I2a-Din in the south is probably just due to another founder effect due to the fact that the South Slavs originated in western Ukraine, where the ratio of I2a to R1a was higher. Virtually all Dinaric I2a falls under the L147.2 branch, and the majority to the S17250 ramification, who descend from a common patrilinear ancestor who lived only 1,800 years ago.

0:17 wrong, the Slavs arose a very long time ago, at least in the Bronze Age, and the ancestors of the Slavs appeared in the late Neolithic of Polesie, Smolensk and Bryansk regions - the Upper Dnieper archaeological culture of the late Neolithic (4th millennium BC) in the Smolensk, Bryansk regions of Russia, Northern and Eastern Belarus. 0:26 what is shown in the picture does not look like a Slavic fortification. Straw roofs ? Are you seriously ? 0:56 this is not an early Slavic culture, but during the migration period. The Prague-Korchak culture is one of many Slavic cultures and not the "first Slavic" 1:06 Perun never looked like this. The Slavs never had winged helmets and leather bracers from bdsm. Perun is the god of everything and the creator and patron of everything and not just a storm, thunderstorm and lightning. He rides in a chariot that produces lightning, thunder, roar. It's probably something like modern depictions of Odin, like stupid western movies where everyone walks around with leather bracers, like the TV series "Vikings" and so on. In other hand Veles is the cattle god was depicted with taurus horns Svarog is a holy fire that primordially did not have any human features and got them after the development of his cult. Initially as far as I know, it was simply worship of a specially continuously burning maintained "holy fire" that never died out and was served by Volkhvs. Later, Svarog had human features and became a human-like fire god from whose fire life and everything that exists comes. The correct image will be like this - a tall muscular man in traditional Slavic clothes with long hair with a tur horn, a sword, a knife hanging on his belt, constantly enveloped in bright red fire. It's Kolovrat and not Colorat, and this is a fake from one pole from 1923, a drawing of an eight-ray rectangular variation of the swastika is found in 1923 on one of the engravings based on pagan motives by the polish artist Stanislav Yakubovsky. He himself called the symbol "sun" (Polish - słoneczko). The nature of his drawings was pseudo-scientific and was fiction. There is no such Slavic sign and never was, it is better to look at the real archeology of Slavic cultures; there are many decorations, signs, drawings, motifs and patterns. Why are fakes needed ? 1:47 the Huns never had an empire and the Gepids did not have a kingdom; they like the Slavs lived in a tribal system. Scythians had not existed for a long time for that period. 2:24 his name was "Добрята" I don't know how it will be in English, this is the answer to the Avars ambassadors for the demand for tribute, who were later executed except for one to convey the message. His name in Greek sources appears as Dauritus (Greek Δαυρέντιος, Δαυρίτας). He was the leader of some part of the ancestors of the southern Slavs before they assimilated with the local Thracian-Illyrian population of the Balkans and Carpathians. 3:38 only in the sources of the Romans in reality there were many Slavic tribes and tribal unions 3:58 nonsense invented first by some German priest during the time of Charlemagne who fought with the Slavs and then taken by the German fascists and other Western anti-Slavic garbage. The English word slave has nothing to do with the Slavs, but comes from the Romans. Modern academic versions trace the origin of the Byzantine Σκλάβος, Έσκλαβήνος [Ésklabḗnos] to the verb σκυλάω [skūláō, skyláō], σκυλεύω [skūleúō, skyleúō], meaning "to undress (kill) the enemy's booty". There is no connection with the Slavs. 4:18 this is about the ancestors of the Czechs and Moravians they mostly fought with the Avars. Not about all Slavs in general. 4:49 his real name was not Samo but Samoslav or Samosvyat and he was not a Frank but a Western Slav related to the ancestors of the Czechs, the Franks were the enemies of the Slavs Yes, and the "state of samo" was actually a military alliance of 3 West Slavic tribes and fell apart immediately after his death

Russian much ? How do you prove Slavs existed in the Bronze Age . Usually all this indo-europeans get to be named and individualized only after they start moving from their Yamnaya - Corded Ware home lands . I would say Slavs were the ones that did not move in the first instance with IE migrations . They moved much later in vacuums left by already departed germanic tribes (like the Goths or Gepids) , or after the waves Huns have passed , or power of Scythians/Sarmatians/Celts , and Dacians vanished . Weakening of Eastern Roman Empire and the closing of the limes on Danube had a role too in attracting poorer Slavs .

@@seaman5705 Yep Russian very much Simply - genetics, archeology, anthropology, traceology. All these 4 sciences show that the Slavs are the indigenous and ancient population of Polissia and the adjacent lands they existed there for thousands of year, ancestors of the Slavs lived in the same place. The Slavic ancestral homeland has been found, we do not live in the 19th century. This is the place where the Slavs appeared, formed and gradually transformed into themselves from the ancient inhabitants of this region, starting from the late Stone Age. Already since the Neolithic period, succession in the genetics and material culture of this area is visible. From the Stone Age and right up to the early Middle Ages, when the Slavs, due to a population explosion, a sharp increase in their number and other events, began to settle in various other parts of Europe. The Slavs are quite obviously descended from the Bronze Age forest cultures of Eastern Europe. One can easily trace the chain from reliably and confidently, absolutely clearly the Slavic Kiev culture that originated the Pochep culture to the Yukhnov culture (this is Herodotus' Budini "forest Scythians") to the Bronze Age - to the Sosnitsa culture of the Trzciniec circle (Trzciniec, Komarov, Sosnitsa) and from it to the Middle-Dnieper culture of Corded Ware and from it to the local Neolithic from which the Slavs originated. Different parts of the large archaeological community of "Corded Ware" that stretches from Germany to the Urals have different origins initially and different local influences. What corded ware people have in common is only the actual method of making ceramics and some types of jewelry, and that’s all. And the origin of different groups of Corded Ware is different. The Yamnaya is steppe nomads, this is just one of the many Indo-European cultures and only the Catacomb and Afanasievo cultures originated from them and nothing more. Part of the people of the Corded Ware culture has an admixture of the Yamnaya gene but nothing more. Corded Ware cultures do not originate from the Yamnaya and also has nothing to do with the Slavs and their ancestors at all. The population of the steppe changed very strongly and quickly - and mixed ethnically and mutually destroyed each other, unlike the forests of Polissya, there the ancient people from whom the Slavs descend survived, increased in number and lived apart from all the rest for thousands of years, closed and apart. Until the Middle Ages, the ancestors of the Slavs had contacts with other people only in the form of a war with them. And it was rare. There were no common Indo-Europeans, almost all Indo-European peoples have ethnically different ancestors and a commonality only in language. Different groups of "Indo-Europeans" formed in different parts of Eurasia at different times and under different conditions and had different ancestors. At the most we can only speak of common very distant linguistic ancestors. Well Goths and other things written by you is the time of the migration of peoples, this is the early Middle Ages and what was before it. The Slavs by that time had existed for thousands of years and simply began to settle in different places because they did not have enough land as of their number. Dacians and other Thracians are the ancestors of the Romanians and Moldovans, as well as a number of Balkan-Carpathian peoples, they did not disappear, they simply lost their culture and language after the conquest by the Romans Yes that the Slavs began mass settlement after the invasion of the Huns, Goths, the end of Western Rome, etc. is true I answered everything that I wanted

@@dropanukeonusaagain6606 OK . It make sense . Slav's ancestors lived in the forests , like proto-Germanics , fighting among themselves . To reach a certain level of civilization, they had to get out of the forest , to migrate . Sorry , but I still think Corded Ware is an offshoot of Yamnaya . They had R1a populations at east and R1b at west . Bell Beaker is an offshoot of Corded Ware . So eastern Corded Ware people with Abashevo and Fatyanova (you say non- Yamnaya) formed the slavs , which moved weastwards - only there they were recognized/named slavs . So lets not stretch origins like chewing gum . Every people has mixed ancestors . Those from bronze age were not Slavs, like Dacians/Thracians were not Romanians . Only part of them, mixed with many others became Slavs, respectively Romanians . To came to conclusion - Russians (Muskovites) are not the only slavs and genetically are the less Slavs of all the slavic nations . They were a mixture balto-finnics with some slavs . They became more slavic by conquering the real slavs, but they also got more mixed with mongols and other central asian tribes . So no right to decide over other nations claiming they are the "ancient " slavs .

@@seaman5705 outdated what is depicted on drawings is a modern idea of "kurgan theory" yes, some groups of corded ware received some part of their genetics and material culture from the people who inhabited the steppe, but nothing more. Most of Europe's forest cultures have nothing to do with nomads. Kindred people lived in the forests, but in many ways they were different. In addition, local influences on various groups of Corded Ware cultures are not shown here. Different groups of corded ware had different origins and not all came from the same place and looked the same. The very method of decorating ceramics with a corded ornament using a rope comes from the Sredny Stog culture - the most ancient examples with a similar pattern are found there. This type of vessel, which spread throughout most of Europe, probably originated from there. And the people of Sredny Stog were nomads and lived in the steppe yes. Also I just didn’t understand why Abashevo and Fatyanovo were separated from the rest of the Corded Ware cultures ? it doesn’t make sense, Abashevo’s culture is of course steppe and nomadic, but here Fatyanovo is just migrants from the territory of Germany and they come from western groups of corded ware. They were sedentary and forest. There are also doesnt shown many local variations of this culture - everything is just painted in turquoise and it says "corded ware". This is probably a simplification.

Firstly, there are no Eastern Roman historians attributing the ease of Slavic settlement to Justinian's plague - which was spread all over Europe (despite its popular name and the worst scenario occurring in densely populated Constantinople) and almost certainly affected Slavs. Further on, based on all archaeological findings of both the Antes and the Sclavenes, we know for a fact that equipment was standardized in the sense that every excavated grave of a Slavic warrior features chainmail and sword (fashioned in East Roman style), an ax, round wooden shield, and a long spear. Some Slavic warriors were wearing belts with buckles adorned with Avar motifs, but they were most likely spoils of war or items of trade. The only group of Slavs that have fought without armor was warbands of young warriors who've fought entirely naked (barring the red paint on their body, hair, and face) and in melee (the ones that were described as being red-haired by Procopius), and some groups of Pannonian Wends who were tributaries of the Pannonian Avars, and relying on ambushes was a part of defensive strategies, and only against hosts that were too numerous and too well-armed, like the joint Avar-Roman host that assailed Sclavene territories after Daurentius slew Bayan's envoys and refused to pay tribute to him. Aside from that, both the Antes and the Sclavenes have utilized large breeds of horses for warfare, and matter of fact, an entire host of Antean and Sclavene horsemen was dispatched to evacuate Belisarius from Italy, which proves the aforementioned. Secondly, the Avars have only managed to subjugate the more passive parts of the Dudlebes, as well as parts of the Wends - certainly not the Antes and the Sclavenes, who were noted to have lived only under the reign of their own kings like Muzok and Mezamir (Antes) and chieftains like Radagast and Daurentius, of whom the latter was described as being the supreme chief of all Sclavenes. Procopius' early assessment of Slavic social structure was just that - an early assessment based off of early sightings of Slavic warbands that were initially considered to have been "small tribes governed by "military democracy". As interaction with Slavs intensified, he realized that the Slavs did exhibit an organized social structure, albeit admittedly, the Antes were the most centralized body of the Early Slavs, with a hereditary monarchy where one king reigned over all of the Antes, while among the Sclavenes, you've had one known supreme chieftain like the aforementioned Daurentius to whom other chieftains were subordinate, there was also a mention of Sclavene kings, like Perbundos, who led a coalition of Sclavene tribes deep into Greece. Likewise, the Avars were first invited to make a move against the Slavs by the Roman emperor Tiberius, and later on, Emperor Heraclius would invite Serbs and Croats from the distant Slavic northwest to liberate the northern provinces of the Avars and have them settle all those provinces as his vassals which he'd ennoble, which refutes any theory of the Sclavenes and Antes arriving to Southeastern Europe off of the back of the Avars. After all, the earliest Slavic raids deep into the Roman territory were accompanied by the enslavement of an estimated quarter of a million Romans in every province struck by the Slavs and the sacking and besieging of Roman cities, which were recorded as early as the first part of the 6th century - decades before the Avars were contacted by Emperor Tiberius, and before they reached the most distant part of the basin of the Danube. On top of that, the invading Sclavenes have also slain Asbadus/Asbados - the famed Roman/Gepid general, and have also annihilated his elite army, a feat which would've been impossible if the Slavs "only fought from afar", or worse, if they've "made no use of pitched organized warfare". The usage of poison arrows and guerrilla warfare was deployed only in defensive wars against a martially superior enemy - like against the combined Roman-Avar army during Maurice's campaign which was launched deep into Sclavene territories north of the Danube. In the work of Menander Protector, we find the following excerpt: "This movement of Avars against the Slavs did not only result from Emperor's envoys and the wish of Bayan to return the courtesy unto Romans for all the gestures of friendship and help that he had received from the Emperor but also because he held great hate for them (the Slavs) out of personal sentiment as well. The Avar leader has, therefore, sent envoys to Daurentius (Δαυρίτας) himself, and to his chieftains, calling on for their submission and enlistment among tribute-payers. Dauritas and the leaders alongside him replied: "Who is, then, the man which basks in sunlight that threatens to conquer our strength? We are used to ruling over others, not to being ruled over - of that, we are certain for as long as wars are waged and swords are forged". Since the Slavs acted so haughtily, the Avars were no different in boasting. Then the scolds and insults resulted from that, being that the barbarians are of a narrow and proud mind, and the fight broke out. The Slavs, unable to control their anger, killed the envoys, as Bayan found out from another source. Because of that Bayan has long since raised accusations against the Slavs, fueling a secret hatred against them, mad for they refused him, and angry that from them he received an unforgivable insult, in the same time he thought he would do a favor to Caesar and likewise *find a rich land to plunder, for far too long has the land of Romans been plundered by Slavs, and theirs (Slavic) - never by any of other peoples*." Thirdly, the Early Slavs seized and inhabited a massive territory that spanned from the east of Germany to the Baltic and the very distant fringes of Eastern Europe. Matter of fact, the bulk of the Sclavenes have lived on the northern shores of the Danube and were bribed by Roman authorities into maintaining that status quo, at least temporarily. Also, Slavs weren't "monotheistic", they were henotheistic. Even though Perun was their chief god, they also recognized the existence of other gods as well, hence why the Sclavenes and the Antes worshipped Perun and Veles - which also reflected their lifestyles, which were very warlike and militarized and subsided on animal husbandry, fishing, hunting, gathering and the practice of a form of agriculture that required the burning of the soil, so they weren't nomadic, but certainly not entirely sedentary either. It's also important to note that Procopius also states that the Sclavenes and the Antes shared the same customs, beliefs, and institutions. The same goes for the Wends, which is also supported by the homogeneity of early Slavic aDNA, YDNA, and language, although material culture was far more varied (depending on which culture they defeated and assimilated). Fourthly, the role of the Avars in all of this is overemphasized, and for the following reasons: a) As mentioned before, they were invited by the Romans to defeat and subdue unruly peoples on the Danube, like the Antes (who were Roman allies from time to time as well), and during the next century or so will be the foremost "allies" of the Romans against the Slavs, up until Heraclius invites the Serbs and Croats (Sclavene tribes) to defeat and annihilate them south of the Danube. b) While it's true that the Avar hosts were initially the largest, they were in time overshadowed by the Sclavene hosts, which have, after realizing that the Roman authority on the Danube is no more, begun launching massive invasions that were also preludes to the permanent settling of the lands they've seized and initiated the assimilation of the peoples they've defeated and temporarily subjugated. c) Western historians tend to make the mistake of not distinguishing the Slavs, even though primary sources from that era have noted that the Early Slavs were divided into three groups: the Wends, the Sclavenes, and the Antes, which brings us to the point of the "100 000 Slavs" that were part of the Avar host - most of them were Pannonian Wend tributaries of the Avars, while the rest were Sclavene allies who, thanks to their arrangement with the Avars, were exempt from abiding by Avar-Roman peace treaties, and would continue raiding and marauding as they pleased, which brought great displeasure to Bayan senior and junior, and the Roman emperors as well. d) Slavs would've invaded and permanently settled the lands south of the Danube one way or the other, the involvement of the Avars has only somewhat hastened of process, and by subsequently making sure that the Sclavene tribes would form the overwhelming bulk of those who'd settle and seize the territories in question by waging exhaustive wars with the Antes. At most, the Avars were a strictly Pannonian phenomenon and were never masters of the "Balkans", which is also supported by archaeology and modern genetic studies, and given that you're made a mention of primary Roman/Greek sources, you should also know that there's not a single one of them that claims that the Slavs were migrating with the Avars, but that they were invading Southeastern Europe at the same time. You could potentially make that point for the aforementioned Pannonian Wends, but not for the bulk of the invading Slavs - who were Sclavenes and Antes. e) Sclavenes have besieged Thessalonica five times (in 586 or 597, 604, 615, 617, and 676), and only in two of those sieges were the Slavs assisted by the Avars.

Who are the Slavs? it's a long story, but they were created much earlier than your story, which has many flaws. I won't go into details, but before Christ the Slavs lived from the former West Germany (Slavs lived in the East) to the Urals and down to Thessaloniki and further south and west again across the entire Balkans and almost all of Austria, there lived related peoples who could come to an agreement with each other. Those Gepids and others were Slavs, except Avars and Huns who are not Slavs. Slavs are a mixture of people with R1, N, I2 dominant in the West and East, and I2, R1a, E, J dominant in the South, except for Slovenia's R1a, which belongs more to the Western Slavs because the Karanti Slavs once lived in Austria and were assimilated. The Slavs are the oldest living Indo-European group of people in Europe because they are the only ones in Europe to inherit the Neolithic. They remember and inherit the time before the first wars, when there were no walls and fortresses. Not everything can be proven through written traces, of which there are many false ones, there are also material traces, old traditions, customs, folk dances, etc. If the Slavs are the oldest European group, watch this video, otherwise I am a Serb, here you will see the old Serbian calendar from when it existed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/in_Ye2yanZeWldk

It was very much clear that Asparuh gave them an ultimatum based on whether they will follow him willingly or submit by force, most agreed willingly, those who didn't were resettled, showing that Asparih held the greatest force both by numbers and by force. @@its_dey_mate The Seven Slavic tribes were military allies, and later, vassals of the Proto-Bulgars, and were tasked with defending the territories of Danube Bulgaria, they formed the majority of Bulgaria from the moment it was founded. Hellenthal et al. 2014 estimated from data of 94 modern populations a couple of analyses on Bulgarians inferred from an admixture event in 1000-1600 YBP between a Slavic and a Cypriot donor group: to a Polish donor group Bulgarians are of an estimated 59% Polish-like and 41% Cypriot-like admixture; to a Belarusian, Bulgarians are off 46% Belorussian-like and 54% Cypriot-like admixture. Around 4% of Bulgarian genes are derived outside of Europe and the Middle East or are of undetermined origin (by 858 CE), of which 2.3% are from Northeast Asia and correspond to Asian tribes such as Bulgars, a consistently very low frequency for Eastern Europe as far as Uralic-speaking Hungarians. The percentage, however, may vary by region as the less numerous Bulgars were concentrated around the northeast, failing to settle throughout the country's numerous tribes as the significant donor tribes. The word for slave does not come from slav, that is a common ill-informed reason. It is an example of a *false cognate,* which is what linguists call similar-sounding words that appear to be related but that are actually completely unrelated - like the word for "Mosquito" not being the origin of the term "Mosque". The actual word for slaves was "serf" as in "serfdom" aka, serve. The word "Slav" to denote the people group, came *after* and is a relatively newer word, which translates to "celebrate", "praise", ect; in pretty much every single Slavic language - hence, the connection between them all. Just wanted to fix that mistake. Otherwise neat video.

You're wrong on both accounts. The etymology of the word Slave does indeed come from the word Slav. Slav is an English word for Sloveni, but that doesnt mean Slavs called themselves Slaves. Sloveni literally means people who speak the same word (Slovo=Sloveni) or rather people who speak the same language. It has nothing to do with the word slava and slava does not mean celebrate/praise it means glory.

For the eastern provinces of Byzantium the Persian invasions marked the final break with the secure world of classical antiquity. In the Balkan provinces the break had already taken place. Even during the reign of Justinian the Balkans had been threatened by various Turkic peoples, nomadic Bulgars from the steppes, and much of Justinian's defensive building programme had been directed against their raids. In the second half of the sixth century a new danger arose, that of an alliance between nomadic and more settled peoples. The more settled people were the Slavs, historically well attested but archaeologically difficult to identify, who seem to have moved south in large numbers from the river valleys of central and northern Europe. In south Russia they can perhaps be identified with the culture group who owned the Martynovka Hoard, a collection of silver jewellery whose decoration bears out the agricultural interests of this essentially pastoral people. The nomadic group under whose influence the Slavs fell were the Avars, one of the fiercest of the Turkic peoples to emerge from the Asian steppes, who had left a trail of destruction from as far afield as China. Their horse burials and characteristic jewellery make them easily identifiable, and though relatively few in number, they seem to have exerted a military hegemony over the more numerous Slavs. The two groups crossed the Danube in the 580s and seized a succession of Balkan towns and cities, reaching far south into the Peloponnese, until only a few coastal territories were left in Byzantine hands. There was considerable resistance at first, espe cially under the emperor Maurice in the 590s, but when Phocas seized power in 602 he no longer attempted to hold the Danube frontier, and the pace and density of Avar-Slav settlement greatly increased.

There is a widespread false info that meaning of the word Slav is same as the word slave which is really not true. Firstly because Slavs are not called Slavs in their language. That is English word and by the time Slavs controlled big parts of Europe, England didn't even existed and why should be huge group of people be called by some language on the other side of the world? Slavic word for themselves derive from the word "slovo" "sloviti" which means "a word" "having a word" with someone, because all Slavs understand each other even tho they speak different languages, as opposed to Slavic word for Germans, which is "Nemci" which means roughly as "someone we can't speak with".

Baltic peoples, the Lithuanians and Latvians, and the extinct Prussians are clearly Indo-European peoples, their language is the closest relative of the Slavic languages. The Estonians, Finns, and the long-gone Livonians are an entirely different non-Indo-European group, speaking a language related to the peoples of Western Siberia.

@@ssir5927 Indo-Europeans are simply a language group of many different peoples who have different origins. For example, the Irish and the Greeks - what do they have in common? From an ethnic point of view, nothing. Balto-Slavic languages never existed, but only separate Slavic and Baltic From the point of view of genetics, Latgalians, Latvians and Estonians are no different from the point of view of anthropology, too. @@dropanukeonusaagain6606 What the Irish and Greeks have in common is a socially dominant group originating on the Pontic steppes that brought the Irish and Greek languages to those lands. Not to mention the entire cultural package that goes with language, mythology and the like. Languages develop over time, any two closely related languages would have at some point constituted a single language, before time and distance did it's thing. Language is not necessarily spread by actual mass population replacements, but the role of elites is always prevalent. Spanish and Italian were both Latin, until they were not. Just like that at some point the Baltic and Slavic languages were both something, until they were not. Same with Slavic and Latin, which are actually far more similar than many realize.

@@ssir5927 You wrote some nonsense. The Irish appeared in Ireland when people of the La Tene culture, the Celts, came there in the Iron Age. The Greeks originated from the Aegean civilization which developed from the indigenous cultures of Bronze Age Greece. The result - nothing in common in terms of origin, moreover, the Greeks and the Irish belong to different varieties of the Europoid race. in the steppes of the present-day south of Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, only distant common Neolithic ancestors lived who had long since diverged and gave birth to many different peoples, imposing their language on others, mixing or replacing other peoples of a different origin. Neither the Greeks nor the Irish, neither genetically nor anthropologically similar to the people of the Sredny Stog culture, that is, if we consider their ancestors, then only linguistic ones. The people who created the common Indo-European language which split into many different languages. Different appearance already implies a different genetics and therefore a different origin. I don't know enough about Irish mythology to compare it with Greek but I don't think it's similar. And we know nothing at all about the mythology of the abstract common Indo-Europeans. Spanish and Italian are derived from Latin, not both Latin. The lexical similarity of the Romance languages is based on cognates - words of the same root that have a common origin and similar sound in related languages. Some of these cognates came from colloquial Vulgar Latin and were transformed according to the phonetic features of each language. Slavic and Baltic were originally different languages and no mythical "Balto-Slavic" ever existed, most linguists are against this outdated hypothesis. Slavic does not come from a Baltic dialect, as August Schleicher and others believed. These are two different languages and their separate similarity is only the result of a late convergence. The "Balto-Slavic language" is just an invention of the scientists of the past, that is, a fictional construct.

Reading through some of these comments it is obvious many people do not understand certain fundamental facts. All humans alive today have ancestry as ancient as any other human. Trace it back far enough and everyone is of African descent. Ethnogenesis is a process which occurs, literally all the time. It is when groups choose* (or the choice is forced on them) their identity. Those who would deny this need only look at the existence of the Americans. Three hundred years ago there were no such people, no such nation, yet today they are the most powerful nation in the world. Nationalism promotes the false idea that nations always existed and are always descendent from a specific kin-group. This is patently false, as throughout history the dominant form of higher social organization has been the Tribal Alliance, a confederation of often wildly unrelated people, uniting for reasons of defense and power. The examples of this can be found in the origin myths of the Romans (Latin, Sabine, and Etruscan), as well as the Slavs who were always described as a confederation of three different peoples occupying entirely different economic and ecological niches, the Forest/Marsh dwelling Slaveni, the agricultural field dwelling Venedi, and the steppe pastoralist Antes.

@@kurjakhistory4727 First of all, the Slavs did not come from what is now Russia. Slavs probably emerged from the lands of modern northwestern Ukraine, southern Belarus, and possibly eastern Poland. What is now European Russia was inhabited by Finno Ugric and some Baltic tribes. Neither should one equate what would become Ruthenia to what later became Russia. Likewise, quite a bit of information can be found about Slavic paganism, although not to the extent that some neopagans assume. However there is ample topological, archeological and recorded evidence attesting to Slavic believes outside of Russia. Some of our best records of Slavic paganism come from the Baltic coasts of Poland and Germany, where Slavic paganism thrived in the face of crusaders well into the middle ages. So the Russocentric rendition of Slavic origins is a bit misplaced and misses out on the complexity of the Slavic story

@Spider Bird yes, of course Ukraine does, since most of the southern and eastern portions of the country were not inhabited by a Slavic majority until the 17th and even more so 18th centuries. However this does not subtract from the fact that modern western and Central Ukraine are part of the original Slavic homeland, along with southern Belarus and parts of Eastern Poland. Ironically the Ukrainian territory that Russia is currently claiming as eternal Russian land was for most of its history actually turkic steppes.

Although this is a great video, a lot of details have been forgotten. For example, Slavic tribes were in dispute among themselves and been raiding other Slavic tribes, and taking them into slavery as well as did the Byzantine, Ottomans, and the Western Europe. Prague was one of the major cities for slavery for quite a long period, and the major slaves were of Slavic origins. This was due the rules that forbidden each religion to take their own people into slavery. Slavs were perfect in that sense as they did not belong to either of the major religions. And the name Slav did not originate from the English word, it actually originated from a Byzantine word Sklabenoi, latin Sclaveni.

This video is clueless!! English word "slave" has nothing to do with the word "Slav." The word "Slav" originates form the Slavic Russo/Serbian words "glory/slava" (e.g., "Slava Ukraine") or "to celebrate"/"slavit").
@fidenemini111

Nope, it originates from "slovo" ("word" - meaning speakers of common language). They were Slovene, not Slavene. They even called non slavic speakers "Niemcy" (mute ones, unable to speak an understandable language).

continuation of my old comment 4:42 what is "northnern slavic-baltic people" ? This map doesn't make sense Slavs and Balts are completely different people 5:30 also I don’t understand in this picture these "northern Slavic-Baltic people" live in a large piece of modern Germany and throughout Denmark ? This is bull - the Polabian Slavs never settled so widely even until the time when the Franks created the country and the Germanic tribes were fragmented. Slavs never inhabited Denmark and northwestern Germany. Remember where the border was between the Polabian Slavs and the Germanic. 5:36 - ??? all people living in a clan-tribal system live in an "egalitarian culture" where everyone is more or less equal, including your leaders and the other elite who are blood from blood and flesh from the flesh of your people. Most of the peoples with a tribal system gradually moved to the monarchy as a result of the desire of the top to maintain their power for life. The tribal structure fell apart with an increase in the population, when you can no longer know all your people by sight, even though they are all your relatives by blood. the Spartans and their way of life has nothing to do with the Slavs, and so all the people of the Middle Ages and traditional cultures were tough, the Slavs are no exception 5:59 and on this map, instead of "northern Slavic-Baltic people" they have already placed the Saxons in Germany hmm. It's closer to reality. 6:07 the Slavs were definitely not "leedless" although they certainly did not have statehood, only chiefdom. And they were divided for objective reasons, like all other peoples - Greeks, Italics, Thracians, Celts, Germanic, various nomads, they were all divided. The same Romans (Latins) destroyed and partially assimilated all the other Italic tribes, so we don’t even know how their languages sounded. The Slavs fell apart into different tribes back in the days of Kievan culture; it existed from II BC. and 4th century AD it is strange to present some absurd demands for unity to the Slavs when there is no such thing among the population of the whole world, both at that time and now, and this is completely normal. 6:11 delirium, the Slavs have always had chieftains, it’s just that during migrations they gained more power because of the military threat to the very existence of various Slavic tribes and gradually their power became monarchical, as they decided to consolidate and keep it for themselves. There is no "democracy" in a clan-tribal society, no matter what the people who pronounce it mean by this word. It is built on consanguinity and the common interests and origins that come from it. This is a big, very close-knit and warlike family where everyone clings to each other. the assertion that the Slavs do not have nobility and it accidentally arose during migration period calls out laughter. Apparently someone took too literally what the Byzantines wrote about the Slavs
