Who are the THUNDERBOLTS? New MCU Team EXPLAINED

We’re going to explain who the thunderbolts are, who’s on the team, who should be on the team, and what kind of threats they’ll face in the MCU.
The movie will be directed by Jack Schreier-he did that robot and Frank movie. This follows Marvel’s pattern of hiring indie directors to direct their big budget movies. This is because a lot of Marvel’s pre-viz process maps out big action sequences ahead of time, but they still need someone to tell the humans how to make feelings on screen..
The Thunderbolts is a group that is unlike anything else we’ve seen in the MCU up to this point. People keep saying they’re Marvel’s suicide squad, but that’s not exactly true. See, the Thunderbolts first began during this 90s story called Heroes reborn. Basically, all the heavies, the Avengers, Fantastic Four, were sucked into other dimensions, so everyone in the Marvel universe thought they were dead. A new team called the thunderbolts showed up and started picking up the slack for the missing avengers.
The public gradually accepted this new super team-but it turned out that they were actually a team of villains in disguise, led by baron Zemo. I don;t think the movie is going to comply with that kind of twist, cause, we;ll, we already know the twist. But, there have been many other intierations of the team over the years. At one point, Norman Osborn became the director of shield and formed his own team to act as a kind of suici0de like team of villains to do the dirty work the heroes wouldn't touch.
During this time, Osborn was basically put in charge of all the government’s superheroes, in an event called dark reign. Basically, after Civil war tony was put in charge of shield, then he failed to stop a skrull invasion, so the government put a former villain in control. Biven current events, that no longer seems unlikely.
Dark reign also gave us the dark avengers. This was another team of villains and anti-heroes disguised as good guys, who were anointed as the Avengers.
I think that we’re going to see an amalgam of these two teams in this movie. Events are very similar. The core of the Avengers is broken, with Tony and Natasha dead, Steve and Clint retired, Thor off finding himself and banner-I guess is just doing consulting work. We don;t have an official avengers team, or an official avengers headquarters.
So with the Avengers gone, this is a perfect opportunity for Thunderbolt Ross to step in and flex his muscles. Ross first entered the MCU in the Incredible Hulk, where he was hunting Bruce Banner because he wanted to create an army of hulks from his blood. [that man is govt property] You’ll remember that in that movie he used a lesser version of the serum to give Emil Blonsky powers [clip], him getting kicked] [not a great plan].
Ross keeps popping up in the CU attempting to control other heroes. He spearheaded the sokovia accords, haunted Natasha, and made the Avengers report to him in Infinity war. This is a guy who has always wanted his own team of avengers. And now he finally has his chance.
Now I should mention that the actor who plays Ross, William Hurt, recently passed away. Personally, I’m in favor of recasting almost any role in these movies, because the characters should live forever. Maybe Sam Elliot would reprise the role, or Brian Cox from succession.
Or. the team could just be named the thunderbolts in his honor, if the character has died. We know he has a bad ticker
It also seems very likely that Ross’s chief agent is the former spy Valentina allegra de fontaine [val, for short]. We’re seen her pop up in falcon and the winter soldier, black widow, and offscreen in hawker. All we know about her is that she seems to have some security clearance and she hires out Yelean for assassin work. She’s also not above meaning the truth, as she lies to Yelena about her target.

I agree. MCU Bucky has always been a hero. Like Steve hanging out with the WWII vets in the Ultron party, Bucky deserves a proper homecoming. Mark Hamill is the right age to play the son of one of MCU Bucky's 3 sisters (per his Smithsonian biography in Captain America: The Winter Soldier).

1. Thank you for giving the first good explanation of The Thunderbolts I've seen on KZbin. 2. I really hope we get more of the original Thunderbolts in the MCU version. At the very least, I hope they introduce Moonstone in The Marvels and get her on the team, because she's always been the most interesting member to me, because you really never know which way she's going to go. 3. I would love it if Ross put together The Thunderbolts (Zemo, and hopefully mostly characters from the original comics series) and Contessa put together The Dark Avengers (US Agent, Yelena, Abomination, Justin Hammer) and we had the two teams going up against each other. 4. My hope for how they handle Ross, is that he took a new Super Soldier serum, that rejuvenated him (maybe recast him with Jon Hamm) leading to him becoming Red Hulk down the road.

I completely agree with having Thunderbolt Ross recasted. I also would love to see Baron Zemo take on the mantle of the Patriotic Citizen V, like in the comics. I’m pretty sure it won’t happen but it would definitely be cool to see.

seeing Zemo as Citizen V would be great but maybe not exactly as in comics since that persona was very American-coded (even though original Citizen V was British) and i don't think Zemo would agree to parade around practically dressed like an American flag given his dislike for the USA and its heroes. But the original Citizen V costume doesn't have any specific symbols associated with America or Great Britain, it's just red, white and blue which sure are colors of previously mentioned countries but are also colors of Sokovia and honestly I think they can go with that.

Walker isn't an idiot, he's smarter than people are willing to give him credit for, he’s certainly proven that in the comics and even in the MCU, if they'd all just worked together like he said they should do from the very beginning instead of busy with the internal clashes between each other over the shield, they'd have gotten Karli taken care of a lot earlier and with a lot less casaulties. It's not Walker who's an idiot but rather the story refuses to acknowledge his points because Sam and Bucky have to be the heroes of the story and be in the right, even if their "smart plan" was to break a murderous terrorist out of jail and get more people killed along the way.

@@nicomoremusic In the MCU, he's actually pretty smart too, the show just refuses to accept his point of view as correct because they want Bucky and Sam to look smarter and more right. Walker's suggestions that they all work together is a smart move, Walker then recognizes that Sam and Bucky broke Zemo out when no one else does and lets them lead him to Karli, Walker also built his own shield. The only time that Walker made bad decisions was when his stress and temper got the best of him, which quite frankly, that's happened to a lot of MCU heroes, including Steve and even genius people like Tony.

@@federicamottadelli9333 He is actually stronger and faster than every other soldier, the only people that actually beat him are the Dora and super soldiers, which I doubt are things that he's been tested against since his tests would be against the average standard soldier levels. And he is smart too, but smartness only goes so far when people around you refuse to listen. Walker suggests from the very beginning for everyone to work together, yet Sam and Bucky were the ones who won't listen and actually ended up getting a lot of people killed in Madripoor. Walker also handles the shield well without super soldier serum so he's clearly able to do good physics and mathematical calculations in his head, heck, he bonked Zemo on the head with it and didn't somehow crack his skull open and only knocked him out, so clearly his math is on point.

I think Ross is going to already be Red Hulk in this which would make a recast even easier. In Black Widow, Natasha mentions that he is sick, which is really eerie considering Hurt's passing. I think it signals that they've been hinting at Ross's transformation, he became Red Hulk in order to not die.

Nice video. I would want the Dark Avenger Sentry from the comics in the god role, but his story is so interesting and complicated he'd need an intro, and that slot in Guardians 3 has been taken by Adam Warlock. Norman's in the MCU now, he should head it up! His character is super interesting and one of the best parts of the Dark Avengers arc. And Venom, on the other hand, could probably just be brought in since 1) it's established that he's in the MCU and 2) the Sony movies did an okay job of setting him up, I guess.

Interesting take on the way the Thunderbolts should be portrayed. Personally I was thinking more in the vein of The Boys with most of the team. Propagandized to the public as heroes while being lecherous villains in private. Maybe that's where the split can come in team members like Yalena and Patriot really want to do good albeit with more viscious/brutal tactics than normal heroes. While Blomsky and Zemo some of the others are just there for the power/payday they're provided by being sponsored by the American Government, and are pulling villainous moves behind the scenes. Then it comes down to the good team members having to defeat the bad team members.

Yelena Belova (Black Widow) This Movie Needs a ‘Civil War’ like Tone, Russo’s should direct this one. Edit: For anyone who’s thinking ‘Gorr is too out of reach, Thor probably kills him’. To them, I’d like to point out that Thor has become more Merciful and would probably spare Gorr after defeating him. Thor would then drop Gorr into one of New Asgard’s prisons. Later, Gorr somehow escapes gets new powers (courtesy of Valentina), and joins the thunderbolts. The rest are on earth and reachable.

After the D23Expo Thunderbolts announcement - what if Marvel is going to Suicide Squad the Thunderbolts? As you said, the only one with powers is Ghost, otherwise you have spies and super soldiers. If this team went up against most MCU Villains (Ultron, Mysterio, Abomination, Kaecilius, Xu Wenwu . . . even Aldrich Killian) they would be torn to shreds. Most of the line-up is expendable. I could see everyone dying in that line-up short of Yelena with a heart felt emotional death moment for Red Guardian. That'd be an amazing movie. Who is that villain?!? : )

You know what? I think there's a character who no one thinks about, and she, yes SHE, will play a major role in forming process of the Thunderbolts and specifically late phase 4 and early phase 5, and that's Sharon Carter. I think Sharon has already been in touch with Val and probably she's the one who delivers weapons and techs to the Thunderbolts. And don't forget Val has a connection with Wilson Fisk and eventually Sharon will be in touch with Kingpin as a business partner. I think Sharon is directly tied to the Thunderbolts in some way, shape or form.

I hope to see more Taskmaster, Winter Soldier, War Machine, White Vision, Red Hulk, Abomination, Red She Hulk, Iron Patriot Scarlet Witch, Moonstone, Venom, Wasp, Ghost, Elektra, Iron Fist, Bullseye, and Yelena. I did not even recognize Karl Urban is Skurge and the Boys. That sounds awesome and he’s a great actor I don’t care for Zemo and US Agent

To have stand ins for every original team member my lineup would be Hulk-Abomination Captain America-US Agent Black Widow-Yelena Hawkeye-Bullseye (hopefully he comes back with daredevil) Iron Man-Hammer if they give him a suit Thor-Skurge That of course would pretty much be a dark avengers lineup so maybe to merge it more with the actual thunderbolts they’ll add some of these other members like taskmaster and/or ghost

Ross was great! Love how as soon as he had UN sign the accord, he just made up orders for the Avengers on the spot, without checking with the UN. Classic superpower!

It would be a cool take if they turned Betty Ross into the Red Hulk. I mean there is also an understandable explanation for her to go villian and that's being that she watched her father go crazy chasing after super heroes it eventually got the best of him and being the Red Hulk is her revenge.

I have a question on MCU time travel logic, so if someone travels to the future and back can they prevent it, for example lets say in the test run for time travel Tony travels a year into the future to see if they won and sees that Quentin Beck has exposed Peter is Spider-Man so in his message at the end of Endgame he say don't trust Beck because he is a fraud then Beck only knows Peter has the glasses but doesn't know he is Spider-Man so he can't expose him and No Way Home does not happen since Peter knows not to trust him and Fury would tell Talos not to trust him. I have a theory that Hulk was only right about Quantum Time Travel which is used to pull you back to your point in time with no changes because you are following Quantum Physics. Or Tony invented multiverse travel and since the sacred timeline still existed the timelines would all be similar and could have just started a few years before. Also if Deadpool 3 will be in the MCU then that means the events of 1 and 2 did happen and the more classic time travel rules apply since we saw that in the film.

I mean on the very base level, The Thunderbolts are the Marvel version of the Suicide Squad, Villains playing Hero. But I really want to see the cast of The Thunderbolts be the original team, Citizen V, Atlas, MACH, Songbird, Meteorite, and Techno. You can have them be brought together by a Thunderbolt Ross-like figure head, but if you put together a team for Thunderbolts that are all established MCU characters, like Winter Soldier and Abomination, you run the risk of the movie being slighted as literal the Marvel Suicide Squad and no one will look beyond that notion that they are the Suicide Squad of Marvel.

Using Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer again is a MUST & this style of the Thunderbolts would be great place for that. Hear me out on this one though, bring Karl Urban back but as Beetle/Mach-I. He leaves the helmet on basically the whole time (ala his performance in Dredd) & there could even be some fun had between him & Rockwell’s Hammer since Mach-I gets on the team in the comics by stealing Hammer tech.

Now see i feel like you missed a prime opportunity here. Justin hammer can sort of take the spot norman Osborne had during dark reign, give him one of tonys old suits. I love the idea of bullseye period, he came from the "faith in monsters" team which also had a very unhinged venom.... luckily we had that tiny easteregg where a little bit of venom got left behind. I think the team will be pitched as a way of "redemption" (like when it was lead by hawkeye) but zemo will be there whispering in peoples ears and pulling all the strings. We have enough of the more villainous types in the roster to keep the team from heading the way of actual redemption.

I would want to see thunderbolts vs dark avengers, villains being heroic vs heroes being villainous. That or dark avengers vs young avengers.
