They are/were SO entertaining both live and on TV. In the 70's they had their own TV show which was great! They also did so many guest appearances on what seemed like every variety show on TV. They can sing, harmonize, and dance for sure! More More Sha Na Na! Please🙏

I remember when I first heard them, it was in the movie "Grease" ... Born To Hand Jive is one of my favorites by Sha Na Na (3 separate sounds) A sound is like "Ahh" or the sound you'd make at the dentist or Dr when they tell you to stick out your tongue LOL

Lol, no, you don’t have the name right. I feel you are thinking of a Wayan’s brother’s character there. But no, not Shanaynay. ☺️ It’s Sha Na Na. Three separate sounds. The name was taken from a doo wop song called “Get A Job”. Listen to the backup singers and you’ll hear the phrase: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipXHYnqZa7WFrtE (Also, Ginger says the name right when she introduces them) The boys started as an a capella group in a university. They did some 50’s themed shows and found more shows and started developing their greaser characters. They ended up opening for a little concert in upstate New York that became remembered as Woodstock. They were given a sketch comedy tv show that ran from ‘77 to ‘81, and that show is where this clip is from. It was a very silly send up of 50’s culture and featured three sets. This is the stage, they had a street corner mock up, and a diner set. The show would feature an unwilling guest, several skits, and usually two or three songs. Their highest career point was probably being featured in the movie “Grease”. They are the band that plays during the dance off at the end of the movie. The piano man, Screamin’ Scott Simon, also wrote the song “Sandy” that was featured in that movie. Sadly, many of these guys are no longer with us and/or retired from show business. Santini - the bald guy who was the first to sing - is now an orthopedic surgeon in CA. Denny, the African American fellow, ended up a lawyer and from there a law professor until his death. A bit of trivia on him: He was the only one who didn’t use a broad New York/Bronx accent. He wouldn’t use the “Youse guys” sort of sound. He didn’t want to portray yet another uneducated black man on tv. He was the only one of the group to ever use proper English as a result. Lenny - the big fellow, and Chico - the guitarist in the powder blue jacket, have also passed. Johnny Contardo, the one who did “Love Me Tender” was still touring as a solo act up until the pandemic. Jon “Bowser” Bowman, the bass who is dressed all in black, was fronting his own group up until the pandemic. The others were still touring as Sha Na Na with some new folks in the group. I was a huge fan of them as a kid; I watched their show religiously. And I’m furious that it’s never come back in reruns or released as dvds. It should be for the guest stars alone. They had people like Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Ronnie Spector, and all sorts of huge names come on that show. Was that more than you needed to know?
