Who build the largest superyachts in the world? It's pretty clear that Germany, and specifically Lürssen, are world leaders...but as you move down to yachts in the 50m - 80m size range there is an amazing variety to choose from!

If you get the chance to see how Feadship build then you can understand why they really are the pinnacle of quality in yachts. Even Lurssen accept that is the case.

One of the most beautiful they have built. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder of course, but worth noting that both "Nord" and "Ahpo" (another stunningly beautiful yacht) were designed by Nuvolari Lenard.

No doubt, Lürssen is numero uno when it comes to quality yachts. Personally though, I prefer their 50-70 meter yachts, except I have a soft spot for Tis (before they molested her with that new paint job). Bigger isn't always better, but to each his own, that's the point of custom built yachts 😊

The issue with the really big yachts is that you get progressively more and more limited as to where you can go and where you can dock, as the vessel size increases. Many marinas, most in fact, have very limited docking facilities for anything over 500 gross tons. You'll often find yourself having to dock in commercial ports and the like, ports that are decidedly less scenic. Even if you are not docking, just anchoring, half the idea with a yacht is to do so somewhere scenic. Again, the larger yachts which sit much deeper in the water due to their weight, cannot get close to shore for the best views. A great many experienced yacht owners who are easily rich enough to afford the truly big yachts will opt for something more in the range of a 55-65 meter yacht, which suffers much less from the problems I outlined above. And finally, for those whose wealth is not measured in the billions, there are very good reasons to stick to yachts that stay below 500 gross tons. Not only will you save a lot both with purchase and operating costs, but your marina, harbour and anchoring options are by far, the widest yet. Had I made wiser choices in life, I'd probably be eyeing the Bering 145 for my yacht, wanting to sail around the world. That said though, the Tatiana is so gobsmackingly beautiful, I might abandon all reason and go writ large.

I was on the Bering 145 with Alexei a couple of days ago. Beautiful yacht! I'm not sure if we'll be able to use the footage we filmed yet since ALOT of work was going on on board to prepare her for a forthcoming cruise...but an awesome vessel!

Gene Machine ran into this problem. The BVI's is their favorite place to go but the size limit for a boat there is 180', so that was the maximum length that Gene Machine and Gene Chaser could be. Dubai has been wanting to get yacht owners into their country as well, but right now the largest yachts they can accommodate are 175', which how big the GulfCraft is that was just built. If you go outside where sailing yacht A is, you can have a much bigger yacht anchored there obviously, but the facilities for bigger yachts are still being built and they will very soon have spots for yachts up to 300' and even want to build a dome that can house up to 30 yachts in a self contained city. Restaurants, hotels, repair yards, shopping center, and other services would be offered inside the dome complex, but the size of yacht can't exceed 330', which is kind of ridiculous because the people that would come there, probably all have yachts bigger than that.

I can now sleep very well, dreaming over which of the Lurssen or Feadship's I would own. I would have to bring along the Bugatti (hidden in the vessel, of course) which is also the only vehicle that I drive whilst sleeping. David, thank you for giving me wonderful visions of good things to sleep on. You are truly a gentleman and a gem. 🍷

I think Joe builds the biggest...Joe Momma!!! Lol. We all know Lurssen builds the biggest and Oceanco, Royal Huisman, and Abeking and Rasmussen are also up there, but to me..I don't care. Explorer yachts is where my heart is and obviously I would want a yacht that could go anywhere and carry all the toys I want. So while some would say 'Bering', they no longer have the 180' up as an option. But I think either CdM Flexplorer, Cheoy Lee 180', a Trinity or a Damen SeaXplorer would be the likely candidates most people think of. However, another serious option would be an anchor hauler, crew support vehicle or a survey ship turned into a yacht/toy carrier by Icon or Alia. But a Bering 125, Van DerWalk 42M or Numarine 37XP, plus a Lynx or Damen toy hauler would work well too. The Beast by Profab Central seems like the perfect yacht to me, or Hodor, so Astilleros Amon would also rank way up there as an option. That is why I would need a good broker. Someone to sit me down, write out what I want and what I want to bring, who I want to bring and where to bring it. From there, let the broker go to work and earn that 3% (lol) I wouldn't need bigger, I would need serious options and prices. Might be a good video idea David. Take a CdM Flexplorer or Damen SeaXplorer and vs that against Astilleros Amon or Profab vs a smaller yacht plus small-ish (Gen 1 or 2) Damen support ship vs the conversion. Not the full Ragnor style, but something similar. We hear that having just the toy hauler as your yacht is supposedly 'a quarter' the price of a regular yacht and now the options exist like the Flexplorer by CdM and SeaXplorers by Damen that combine both already, but what are they worth compared to a 200' anchor hauler or fast crew support vessel (usually built by Damen or Astilleros anyway) and having them do conversion. Can't you offset some of your costs in those projects by selling the equipment, tanks and furniture you won't need anymore? Say you wanted a 42' fishing boat, 5m center console rescue tender, landing craft of some sort, 4 Sea Doos, dive equipment, paddleboards, SeaBobs, e-bikes, etc and 3 ATV's like a Can-Am.

Here's a thought. Instead of spending $500 + millions on a yacht, have a cruise ship built to your preference. Look at the latest generation of True expedition ships designed for Antarctica. They carry 300 to 500 passengers, but are ultra luxury. Example is Fincantieri's build for Viking cruises, the Viking Octantis. She is 30,150 gt, and 672 ft long, and cost $255 million. That would make her the longest and largest super yacht, if privately owned. The biggest difference between a cruise ship and a yacht is the Fairing. Covering the steel so that no welds are visible. This is very expensive and is really an asthetic thing. Personally I'd rather have twice the yacht for the same money. But of course. I don't have that sort of money. Cheers David, from yyz

David, I understand that most superyachts have a 12 passenger limit on overnight cruises to avoid the larger yacht codes but does that limit apply to day charters? On a charter yacht can you invite more friends on board for a day cruise?

If I could afford a big enough boat, it would be heavily biased towards science and exploration. I would have dedicated space for National Geographic Society people and their equipment. If I could, I would also have hospital and disaster relief vessels. I was raised watching The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau and the Thunderbirds.

Is Bigger... better ? That's Subjective to everyone. I personally don't want a Yacht less than 130ft, But I would love to have a Yacht that's over 200ft. It's all about what you want and can afford, if you're buying a Mega Yacht then money isn't a concern... it's more about the Wow factor.

@Yachtsforsaleblog
@Yachtsforsaleblog Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I must admit, I find the "Double Century" yacht kind of annoying. It was conjured up by a yacht broker who claimed he had the yacht for sale so that he could get publicity. The yacht doesn't exist beyond a drawing, no shipyard has been selected to build her, and to my knowledge no thought has been given to engineering or naval architecture. It certainly got the broker publicity...but I'd rather focus on real yachts or at least concepts that have some substance behind them.

@panpiper
@panpiper Жыл бұрын
That kind of wealth has little to do with luck, at least if you are relying on that it doesn't. It is usually the result of an insane work ethic, the ability to live like a miser for much of your life, and the willingness to be bold while still making wise decisions. And yea, if you've got all the previous, a bit of luck doesn't hurt. 😉

I liked the video, but I'm confused about something. At approximately 4:20, when comparing Dilbar and Project 10 10, you say that 10 10 is "half the volume of Dilbar, but Dilbar has 300% more volume". Did you mean to say that 10 10 is about half the length? That seems to make more sense, but at 118m, compared to Dilbar's 180m, that's almost 60%.
