Billionaires love one upping each other when it comes to the length of their superyachts even if it is just by a few meters. Kjell Inge Røkke, the billionaire that owns this vessel is a genius, because he technically owns the world's largest superyacht without having the tax burden associated with these ultra high worth assets. Exploring things on our Planet is much more diverse, much more. Sorry to say that. Also to mention: If we want to stop pollution of oceans, you need to start on land, preventing all the waste going into the ocean. Helping people to be aware what they are doing, raising money for education and dripping waste corruption. See all southeast Asia countries. Without this you will not have something to explore soon, believe me.

Or you could take it that a man with good intentions (and a shed load of money) decided to spend his money (over half a billion) on his own private yacht, so that he could direct what he see's as important research. No qualifications that he has (except those he's paid for opinions), but the world is full of people who have spent their lives researching this yet lack funding. I wish the owner well, as I believe he has good intentions. However, that half a billion would've been better spent if given to university departments?

However, if we can get some decision-makers on this yacht by offering luxury AND then impart knowledge and maybe even hands-on personal experience about the pollution, the fragility and beauty of the marine environment, then I'm all for it. Especially as it is paid for by other people. Sure taxes will be saved etc. but the contribution of the stay payer will not be as substantial as if the government would build a research ship.

A huge drawback with these mega yachts is that there are very limited places where you can ‘park’ them. On the entire US West Coast, 150’ is the biggest yacht acceptable and that’s only at ONE marina, although a second marina accepted a 250’ yacht after much wrangling. The top 25 yachts, in size are all much bigger than that. So, you can’t get maximum value by throwing dock parties. You have to live or commute to Miami or the Caribbean or anchor off-shore.
