This video explains everything beautifully. The Madonna thing was the only "drama" I knew about, but it turns out there were a lot more behind-the-scene stories about the greatest night in pop. Great video! 👍

I've always believed it was because her 6 months recording of the 1982 "Donna Summer" album, produced by Quincy Jones. She was pregnant during most of it and clashed with Quincy. She was accustomed to going in and nailing a song in one or two takes. He preferred many takes... So, it was not enjoyable for either of them..I don't think Quincy wanted her to be there. This is just MY OPINION.

@@russnoe4603 - In addition, I think she paid a lot of money for him to produce the album and I'm sure she was disappointed it didn't do better commercially. @@introspectivetonysoprano, People would much rather believe dumb rumors, and stupid _LIES,_ which is really sad 😢. But, does that mean the public and the media are necessarily being “objective” and “realistic”? No. No one on this Earth has ever been perfect* (*but _ONE_ person alone, who _remained_ that way, as _THE_ example for everyone else), but that is absolutely _NO_ excuse for the media to outright bold-face _LIE_ to the public about anyone and to slander the name/reputation, no matter whose name and reputation it is. The excuse of “ _Well....They’re not ‘perfect.’_ ” is not any justification for making up stories, nor for sensationalism in the media. Entertainers/performers are just _people,_ first and foremost, not to be looked up to and idolized. One may be a fan of a particular artist or genre, but some amongst the fan-bases go _WAY beyond_ simply the enjoyment of the music or interest in an artist’s work, which is _ridiculous._

having both madonna and cindy lauper together wouldn't have worked as both at the time were the same kind of act. plus you need team players and her attitude with not singing "we are the world" showed this was about her and not something bigger. she wasn't missed. prince always had a chip on his shoulder with michael with his small man syndrome both literally and figuratively. he was never bigger than michael. knowing him, he probably would have broken off mid way through his part and done some stupid riffing which would inevitably backfire on him like the time with james brown. i've never got the love-in with prince from his fanboys/fangirls. yes, he was talented with his multi instrument playing ability, but that's where it ends. in terms of contribution to music, he has done nothing. he wasn't missed on this project either.
@omarslayz

@@EricSmith-km1jb at least prince contributed a song to the album and took the backlash from not doing “we are the world” like a king. this “attitude” and “ego” thing with madonna is ridiculous though, she was clearly never invited as stated by lionel ritchie himself, nile rodgers, and some other background people working on it so this wasn’t about her at all. she even contributed towards the live aid concert fundraiser which raised money for the cause, so it was about something bigger at the end of the day.

@@BriZ93 - Those were primarily acting gigs. Not music. LaToya & Randy were exclusively music. But if a Jackson wanted to be there, I'm sure MJ would have made it happen. Janet was probably busy writing & preparing the "Control" album. Randy was just on the "Victory" tour with MJ and LaToya would show up in MJ music videos & award shows. I don't believe JJ & MJ were crossing paths at all during that time period. I personally believe that Janet didn't want to be like the others and try to capitalize on MJ's fame. She wanted to make it on her own. So showing up at MJ's event would make it appear she was using MJ's fame to promote herself. So not wild at all that she wasn't there when you know Jackson history as I do.

To be fair, I think Prince was A-social. In that he was actually a very shy person and kept to himself for the most part. So the thought of him singing with a large group of other high profile musicians probably made him very anxious, but also probably because he felt used if he were to partake which I can’t blame him. And yeah the song was….chssey and no that good.

Prince ALWAYS recorded his vocals ALONE... everybody knows that... not a surprise he couldn’t sing along with all this people in the room... they should have let him doing à guitar solo, that would have been great.... and very easily doable... Never understood why Q Jones refused....

I know I'm going to have to read a few tantrums for writing this. "Biggest SELLING artist" doesn't mean "Biggest artist in the world". And two: MJ and Prince were rivals in our minds. Full stop. Prince said he never saw MJ as a rival. I can understand that if I think in a strictly musical way, because Prince was absolutely free and MJ only beat him in fame and money: he was a multi-instrumentalist, composer*, writer*, arranger, singer, dancer, actor, showman, workaholic, had an insane vocal range, wrote the music he liked (not what the charts dictated), had a knack for being several years ahead of the rest (in sounds, rhythms and recording techniques) and already owned at that time 2 Oscar awards. (*) it is probably more than 95% of his songs are signed by him alone as the solo author. PS: The narrator is quite malicious with the use of "prima donna", that term is feminine, it does not apply to men. Nor is diva, in any case it would be divo. Second PS: When Prince did charity work, donated money or volunteered to help, he NEVER needed anyone to take his picture. Hos we know that his donations were far more than numerous and there is talk of many millions of dollars. A small example: 25 million to install solar panels.

I imagine this will only be of interest to a few people, but...if you go to this link you'll see at around 6:25 a video people arriving like Tina Turner, Bette Midler, Kenny Loggins, then there is a brief video of Lionel Richie with his wife at the time ... and then Lola Falana actually enters the picture and Lionel takes a picture with Lola Falana on one side and his wife on the other. Lola's star unfortunately was falling fast after around 1982, she was still around and played Vegas, but by the end of the 80s, she was a non-entity in the entertainment world. I feel for her. I wounder what they told her after she showed up.? kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5vTZ6lqmLB_iJI

Sammy Hagar wanted to be invited. Instead, other Bay Area musicians sang. They were Sheila E, Lindsey Buckingham, The Pointer Sisters, Huey Lewis and the News. Dan Akroyd was the only Canadian 🇨🇦 there. David Foster wanted him, but Quincy Jones got him! L 🤣 L The other Canadians sang in Tears Are Not Enough.

Prince a fait un don en 2011 après MJ bien après. Et n'a pas voulu we are the world car prince voulait absolument un solo guitare.

Actually, Michael Jackson's "Bad" was supposed to be a duet with Prince, but Prince turned it down because he didn't want to sing the lyric 'your butt is mine'. In an interview he stated: "Who's going to sing that to who?' Because you sure aren't singing that to me, and I sure ain't singing it to you."

The idea was to have strong contrasting voices..different styles. Madonna was popular but think about it. What was special or distinctive about her voice?…nothing! She’s not even a good singer. She’s a good act. Jeffrey Osborn was there and he didn’t have a solo. Madonna is a vocal equivalent of Sheila E.
