I am from Gujarat. And my fav Diwali snack is Makai na pauaa no chevdo( it is basically cornflakes but fried and then fried peanuts and curry leaves and green mirchi with a bunch of masalas and lemon. It tastes amazing), Ghughra ( its basically just karanji, but instead of fully coconut we also add semolina flour or soji, mawa and nuts) and finally, Maida puri. Dad’s basically right! I was shocked to learn how soan papdi is made, but it’s actually a handmade sugar floss candy. Look up some videos to see what I mean! Whereas a cotton candy machine heats & spins the sugar instantly, for soan papdi (and other cultures’ candy flosses) people pull the melted sugar into thousands of strands of superfine candy by hand, using different kinds of flour/oils to keep the strands separated. So they’re not exactly the same as cotton candy, but they used to fill that niche until the 20th century, much like cars vs bicycles.
