Thank you Joseph. The "Equitation Science" book he wrote with Paul Mcgreevy is a absolute must to read to start to truly understand horses. Evidence based horsemanship is starting to gain traction, and is also validating the methods of classical dressage and the teachings of Ray Hunt to Nuno Olivira, now that we are understanding the dopamine effect and the fact that a relaxed horse is a going to offer less resistance, brace and more likely to move in balance. We live in wonderful times with the amount of research finally being done into training of horses. I should also say Warwick Schiller has really embraced this new understanding of horsemanship in relation to relaxation to try and create a more balanced horse. Keep up the good work and keep on asking questions, with your diverse horsemanships skills it will take you somewhere very interesting.

I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting Andrew McLean, attended many of his clinics, lessoned with him and drove him to the airport in New Zealand once 🌞. What you also need to know about Andrew is he is truly the most delightful down to earth humble human you could possibly meet given his level of fame and accomplished body of work. There is a notably ethereal and cerebral sense about his approach to learning and training horses. We met at Amelia's birthday in LA years ago and I'm so glad you found his wisdom and are spreading the word - we need to get him to SoCal for a clinic, he's the nicest guy. He goes to Canada regularly - maybe he stops in LA...

That's SO interesting you mention the intro because I can't put my finger on it BUT I felt emotional watching the intro! Not only was the scenery so beautiful but also your words about taking care of ourselves physically. Something about all that hit me deep. There's a truth and beauty in it. You're on a path that speaks to me and I had my own awakening 10 yrs ago or so when I saw Cavalia (Frederic Pignon and Magali Delgado) and knew I'd never be the same. After a lifetime with horses I knew I was missing what they had with their horses. Spent a week with them in the south of France, riding and doing liberty work with their horses (and spending 10 hrs a day with them) and will never be the same. Now all that matters is if my horse is happy and wants to work with me. And boy does that change things. You inspire me Joseph Newcomb--thank you!

The Andrew McLean 'system' (or evidence based learning)is my benchmark for good training. If an instructor's coaching clashes with Andrew's... then it must be wrong! :) So glad you have found his work worthwhile. One of the reasons I like your videos so much is because your methods are so compatible with Andrew's.

Firstly thanks so much for all your awesome videos! I somehow stumbled across them and its been so great to listen to all your experiences and coaching! I love that you love Andrew McLean . Being Aussie I had heard about Andrew so I bought his book almost ten years ago, and its only now that I am understanding why using his concepts can make such a difference to everything . With my new young horse, I'm learning how to work with him from the ground up. I feel like Im having to reteach myself how so many aspects of riding and horse handling and about really understanding the horses mind to make a true connection when I ride. I learn something not only about my horse but myself everyday.

Absolutely, we all need that fresh air when we exercise!!! Always seemed like defeating the purpose by going to the gym. Riding and training in an arena is the same as the gym to me.Riding is truly a mind body dance with the horse... I use to ride on the beach and in the sand dunes and swim the horses, with my friends. We may be at the beach all day!! Then to the shows on weekends. WINNING!! When you have that mind body connection no aids are needed, it's as if becoming one...cues are seldom needed as well, it's as if two minds have merged...Most, have no concept of what that means. Our bio- mechanics is so crucial to good riding and communication with the horse. Thank you for the vid Joseph, your baby is cute!!!

Love your videos and the thought that goes into them. Check out Chris Irwin. "Frame of body = frame of mind" is a key part of his teaching and you touch on this a little bit when you start scratching your horse. He changed my life with horses and is worth a look if you are into natural horsemanship and developing relationships with horses.

i am so glad you have mentioned andrew and his work! I Love the book THE TRUTH ABOUT HORSES, it has made me a way better rider and trainer just understanding how t he horses mind works. I would encourage anyone to listen to his lectures on youtube they are not on his new site. Also there are short clips( dressage based) using these principals by Jody Heartstone which are excellent! Its really mind blowing when you add the science, ethology, and ethics of horse training! I improved everything when I retrained myself so I could train my horse better! They have an online course and a certificate I believe .Not a single sole in the United States has completed it the last time I checked I believe one Canadian has completed it. You are so right so much of t his is mental. I have not found another person who is aware of Equitation Science International you are the first!!!!

This Andrew Mclean you bring here and his article is like a bomb into the dressage world, i will copy it for stable people here in Germany, but maybe most need some more intellect; like Nuno Oliveira tried to figure out essence about different dressage training scales but they recognized him when he was dead, only few, he wasnt interested to go to competition with heavy horses it blows my mind away after his first book i read in hospital while my ankle and leg broken and i asked myself what have you ever been riding , why do people force their horses so much, I always wondered about why using straightness so late in our german training scale, isnt it starting from first time i sit on 3years old horse with my weight aid ??? i see international piaff these days as trimmed passage on the spot but no piaff ! ...but its a true difference in the stride and aids doing piaff or passage !!!! you can read in foreword of Steinbrecht by Klimke and Podhaisky.... i miss happy horses and see strong riders and most of them only do their job, like boring and i ( not me only ) saw the difference when Totilas changed to Rath, sorry to say, happiness was gone , with attachment to that old scale people forget a horse is a living thing !.....they grew blind !....its so refreshing you bring it here on the point for the whole world and judges - NOW! ......ITS REFRESHING TO SEE ROSAMUNDE doing piaff !!!! ...this is more difficult, OR NO THIS IS THE RIDING ART - to come out of a more light energetic piaff into a "slower" passage and to maintain the rythm in that transition !!!! therefore int. riders show us this wrong piaff maybe they have accustomed themselves to that passage on the spot with easier transitions not willing to feel and forgetting it is an art to ride ......they forgot a Stradivari is only a piece of wood but he who plays on it can make you cry - or not....... peace !

My favourite natural horsemanship person is Richard Maxwell. He's English. Although I am Australian, the closest I've been to Andrew was driving past his place when going to look at a horse. The itching technique works great. I use it on my current horse. Didn't learn it from someone else. Just stumbled into it when looking for a way to lower my horse's stress. There's an American Mike Hughes whose methods I have used for dealing with fear aggression.

That's interesting - I have always thought dressage is an interesting mix of both mental and physical skills. I've been to Monty Roberts and Pat Parelli clinics - I think some of the natural horsemanship principles are a great starting point for groundwork with your horse. I had a horse a while ago and I remember looking into some of Andrew McLeans techniques and buying one of his books. It seems everyone has their own particular approach - I don't think any one of them is ultimately right or wrong. I always find it interesting to try and 'think like a horse'!!!

Have you heard of Brett Parbery? He gives Dressage clinics and classes here in Australia - I don't have a horse at the moment but if I ever had enough money I think that is who I would have lessons with. Have you heard of Gareth Hughes? He is an Australian based in England - I think he used to ride Western style before he got into dressage also - sounds a bit like you......
