Hi Brian & Tess, I think I've watched all of, both of your video's, on u-tube. I enjoyed all of them very much. Tess you struck a nerve when you said when do you know when to back off or have too much fear. If you are smart you will always keep a bit of fear. I spent two years recovering from a bike accident and went out and bought another Trek Fuel EX 8. Rode it around for about a month to get used to riding again and went to the top of a huge hill, about 800 ft straight down. Went to put on my brakes to slow down guess what, no brakes. Back to the hospital for half a day, Two broken ribs, one collar bone and a punctured lung. I'm going to buy another bike. But I will definitely have some fear level this time. Be safe.

I just stumbled upon these interviews and they're really interesting. You do a really good job of getting them to talk about whatever they're in to. Too many interviewers end up "controlling" the conversations way too much and it easily becomes more about the interviewer than anything else. I find the "Get your girlfriend hooked on mountain biking" topic interesting because obviously it makes a lot of sense that some people would want to get their BF/GF interested in the same things as them, but I do think people often forget that hobbies (MTB or anything else) are where a lot of people go to disconnect from their lives, the stress, the daily routines, from crying children, from grocery shopping, from paying bills etc. and I think those are the people who prefer to actually keep their hobby to themselves. It's not that they don't enjoy spending time with the BF/GF but that it's good to get out and experience things on your own as well at times and just relax and disconnect for a bit to recharge. Think of it like other people you enjoy spending time with, would you want to be around them 24/7 and let them move in to your house? Probably not I imagine. It's good to experience different things even as couples, it gives you something to tell each other about and talk about/discuss at home when you're together. Couples who spend every second together tend to not have anything to talk about from my experience, as they always know what the other person did today, experienced today, who they talked to etc. It's boring when you have nothing to talk about imo. If the BF enjoys mountain biking with his friends, let him enjoy that with them, and if the GF enjoys playing tennis with her friends, let them have their fun in peace. It's healthy to not be "stuck" to each other all day every day. Not to mention that it also completely changes an entire group dynamic if one person starts bringing their BF/GF to stuff. Again, it has nothing to do with the BF/GF not being a nice person or that the friends dislike him/her, but friends are just different when they're together without BFs and GFs. If one girl brings her BF to a girls' night out, you can bet that'll change their evening regardless of how nice the guy is. It's no longer a girls' night out at all. :)
@bkxc6 жыл бұрын
I agree 100% about having a place to go and disconnect instead of another thing you're kind of tied to each other with!

I think the best discussion here was about feeling short of expectations as a relative newcomer to mountain biking. While KZbin can be a source of inspiration, it also serves to intimidate. So I really do like this format. I'm a little disappointed the huck podcast died off and the drop of of a couple other discussion based shows dies off. I feel like there isn't much out there from mountain bike people outside the industry.
@FelipediOliveira7 жыл бұрын
Brian Vaughn Yeah, man, me too! I understand they spend a lot of time shooting the podcast and they need to get some good views from that, but i still think that's worth it. Not only because that's a such a good content, but also because fans like us and so many others truly appreciate watching Seth, Brian, Alex and Phil hanging out and chatting about mountain bike. I hope they bring that awesome podcast back again.

I'm disappointed the Huck dropped off too! I love long conversations like this, and they are the easiest videos to shoot and edit once you have the technical aspects set.

BKXC I loved the buck because it was from your average Joe’s perspective! I love the MTB podcast and those guys are great but they are on another level. I comprehend and absorb the info they relay but I related to the huck conversations. It felt like when you and your buddies crack beers “or cokes” and shoot the shit post ride. It was familiar.

Brian! I like this format. This discussion was a really nice digression from the normal content you put out. You should do more like this. I really liked that this had a little bit of a back and forth discussion and not just you asking questions and her answering. Nice touch and very good topic. I would love to get my wife more into the mountain biking but it's really not her game. She enjoys it once in a while, but not all the time. My daughters are the same. They'll come with me on a ride once in a while. I'm hoping to increase their participation a bit more through my channel. Also, am I missing something or did you not put a link to her channel in the description? I did find it easy enough. A simply search on KZbin brings it right up. Thanks for the show, man! I enjoyed it thoroughly. -Brian

Brian, here's some feedback. Take it for what it's worth. Personally, I love that you don't edit out when you crash or sections that you don't feel comfortable riding. To me, it almost feels more real. When I watch your videos, I think to myself I could ride most of that stuff, then get to a part where I'd be like "Nope," not today dude!! Also, I like that you use the occasional f bomb or s bomb as long as it's in the flow of the conversation ( such a s in the case in this video). I know that some YT'ers edit out the swearing because they have kids follow their channel.....and I get that. But, personally I think it's better left in. And I think that if someone cut off your hands.........your video would get drastically shorter because you wouldn't be able to talk. Haha... Great video.

Great interview with an interesting subject! i was thinking of how you could setup your camera gear a little bit better, i really will recognize Dusty Betty in profile now ;-) i'm no pro so i search KZbin for "interviewing film tips" and there's some good tips out there, you could use our DSLR or what you have to record her from a more in-front angle and your gopro to get both of you, set the fokus to manual, i don't think you need to buy a lot of gears to make this really great, Play around where you do the interview why not in the middle of a trail. Keep it up! your a natural in front of the camera! looking forward to more interviews!

Her male companion was 100yds up the trail and didn't even know she was struggling. I'm 66yo and been riding since early 80's had a bad crash on the GDMBR in 07 and was off the bike for 5 years. Although there is risk involved in MTB, there is greater risk of dying on a road bike because of vehicular traffic. We mountain bikers have more of a chance of crashing and taking skin off or breaking a bone but I rarely fear dying.

I remember when I first started watching your videos, and Nate Hills, and others, and I wondered if you guys had already ridden the trails, or were that fast riding blind! But now I get it. I ride a lot of trails blind, and I've been able to hold some decent speed. Of course I'll be faster the 2nd, and 3rd, and 4th time, but I do feel that riding new trails and riding them blind makes you a better rider, and also teaches you to look far enough ahead that riding blind isn't so much of a crutch.

Hey Brian, I heard you talking about investing in coaching on the bike, followed by how long it takes you to edit a video. I have to concur with B1KER. Multiple angles. However, you seem to have your interview techniques down. One suggestion is to limit your movements. You have the 'nodding' part down and not interrupting the guest, but sometimes you are over-exaggerating your movements (could be just the way you react). those movements take the focus off of your subject. Great leading questions. It allows her to expand on her answers and to share her personal experiences. Keep up the good work! And it grows.....

If you're near a university, you might try uploading videos on their guest network. It won't be as fast as their secure network, but it will be better than what you can get at a coffee shop.

I watch every episode, including this one. But I’d be a lot more likely to digest the long form conversation style in podcast form. So as long as you post it to iTunes in addition to KZbin I think you’re on to something.

KZbin Red as well, you can listen in the background!

BKXC I think majority of podcast listeners would prefer a more traditional podcast format. It’s free and shouldn’t be too much extra work. Looking forward to hearing even longer episodes in the near future. Keep me occupied at work. Ha.

The amount of energy necessary to do X miles mountain biking is small compared to the FUN and benefits of it, I mean, you will look awesome, have more energy, have more excitement to work because the motivation to go MTBing later, have more friends... When girls discover all this... I mean is just matter of time... the amount of money that it takes Well is just a gym membership... success to you Betty, cheers!

Riding blind on trails is the same as rock climbing blind!! You have to be able to read the the terrain. With mtb it's about line selection plus technique, fast isn't always the quickest. Great interview Brian, I'm going check out dusty Betty!
