in regards to how elrond, cirdan and gil galad knew not to trust sauron without seeing the two trees; they are all lords, the heads of governing structures, they control kingdoms afterall. So surely they're not operating without advisors and since elves live forever perhaps they all had advisors that survived the 1st age and were around to see sauron and say, "Yep, that's a slimy fella right there. Best kick his butt out the door!" We constantly see how they interact and consult with one another, so i'm sure they have a whole body of advisors and retainers whom they consult with before taking major decisions, like a good leader should.

They for sure had advisors. I guess Elrond and Círdan were advisors of Gil-galad. But in Eregion there were also man lords of the First Age (including Galadriel) and they did only partly figure out that something was wrong, though Galadriel left at some point, it's interesting that they were fooled by Sauron. I think a main difference might be ambition. Lindon was already established and Eregion was founded later. The latter was maybe more "Noldor", who had the ambition to improve their knowledge and craft (even cooperating with the Dwarves) and Annatar was the ultimate opportunity, that they saw, while at the same time not seeing further. the argument that Sauron made goes into this direction too as mentioned in the video: “[...] and they had at first much profit from his friendship. And he said to them: "Alas, for the weakness of the great! For a mighty king is Gil-galad, and wise in all lore is Master Elrond, and yet they will not aid me in my labours. Can it be that they do not desire to see other lands become as blissful as their own? [...]” - The Silmarillion (1977, Allen & Unwin; today: HarperCollins), J. R. R. Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien; Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age, p. 343 PS: I also think after making this video that Gil-galad is underrated ^^

Thought on the topic of healing: I would say that bodily and spiritual healing are intimately connected in Tolkien’s universe, especially, perhaps, where elves are concerned. A few examples might be Míriel’s passing following the birth of Fëanor, Frodo’s Morgul wound, so many other characters dying of grief, kings of the Edain relinquishing life voluntarily, etc.

More info on Sauron's looks: According to one of Tolkien's letters, Sauron was described like a black burned man in his horrible form.

I have a friend from France who can't believe we move the emphasized syllable around in words that make it hard for a non-native speaker to remember what's what. He uses "Democratic, Democracy, and Democrat" as examples. Stress is on different spots for each word. He said in French, it's always on the same syllable. It's confusing for him.

One wonders why Eru would suffer the Black Númenoreans to live, given that he clearly thought the betrayal of the (non-Faithful) Númenoreans in general to be severe enough to warrant the complete destruction of their home and the reshaping of the World. Is a lord of Umbar who is allied with Ar-Pharazôn less deserving of the divine punishment than some young Númenorean child living on the island who never did anything wrong, yet was swallowed up by the Sea with everyone else?

That is a very philosophical question. I think it's mainly about consequences of your own choice, dooming all others and less about divine "punishment" for individuals (except Ar-Pharazôn and his men who set foot on Aman). Those who lived in Númenor had to live with the consequence Ar-Pharazôn brought over them (they could have stopped him or left). If they were "innocent" or not does not matter. The divine intervention was destroying Ar-Pharazôn and Númenor. Númenor was originally a gift by the high angels (and in a way by Eru as a result) to the Edain/Dúnedain and it was then taken away again, when it was used to advance and turn against Eru himself in the end. Those outside of Númenor (still sharing the views of Ar-Pharazôn) were lucky that they were not on the island and that the divine intervention was not directed towards them as individuals. Basically God has undone the gift given to the Dúnedain and punished Ar-Pharazôn and his men personally for entering Aman. However Eru accepts the free will, but ofc freedom still holds consequences. But those might hit the Black Númenórens later (or not). Being against Eru and his high angels is not the "main problem", but that they broke the one rule: Men are not allowed to enter Aman, because their fate is different (Gift of Men -> death with an unknown afterlife with Eru). And Ar-Pharazôn's view was not an individual exception, but the view of Númenor without the Faithful, who managed to escape. I know this answer might be not satisfying though 😅 (and I hope not too confusingly phrased)

Yes there is a lot, though often is work in progress texts, but it's still impressive how much Tolkien wrote. Tolkien was really good at elegantly putting a lot of information in every sentence or its context. Sometimes when you re-read his texts you always discover something new. haha yes ^^ Sadly the Rings of Power show has only very limited rights and ofc the problem of how long everything takes. Sometimes it take lifetimes until the next thing happens.

In Tolkien's world, "Healing" is the same thing as "Lore" ie; one who is great in lore is essentially a great healer of others. The diminished healing from dealing death is referring to diminished healing of one's own body.

Interesting idea. There could be a correlation between lore master and healer, but I'm not convinced that it's exclusively the case. Círdan for sure knew the lore very well too (he was there), but he was not known to be a healer. Tolkien wrote in Morgoth's Ring: "the arts of healing, and all that touches on the care of the body, are among all the Eldar most practised by the nissi" The phrase "the arts of healing" sounds more general than just healing yourself. In addition we can read: "On the other hand many elven-men were great healers and skilled in the lore of living bodies" I would argue a person is not known as a great healer, if they only heal themselves. The healer is a person who heals others. E.g. Elrond healed others (like Frodo) and was known as great healer as a result.

What an absolutely Beautiful study of this work ! So complete, with an absolutely daunting attention to detail. You are so deserving of any accolades that you might receive, and more. It is somewhat difficult for me, as I have purposely avoided side notes of the initial 5 books. This is the reason that, even though I own the books, I no longer read Unfinished Tales or other writings of Middle-Earth except for The Lay's of Beleriand and the lay of the children of Hurin. I very much dislike reading conflicting versions. It's rather like watching a magic show, and then finding out how every trick was done. It makes it hard to go back to watching ANY magic show, because you will forever know the basic principles behind almost every illusion that you see, thereby destroying that illusion. HOWEVER...I do Very Much Appreciate your knowledge and your deep dive into the mind of the Good Professor 👍 I am a solid student of the 5 initial books concerning Middle Earth and have been working on Complete commitment to memory of several chapters of each book. [I attempted to commit the Entire Silmarillion to memory, But there is a Neuro-Physiological reaction when attempting to memorize that much material as a singular repeated project...it quite literally FORCES one to sleep] I have been reading them every year for 45 years. Where does it say there was a Palantir in Rivendell? Elendil had three and his son's had four. Who gave one to Elrond and none to Gil-galad? It doesn't make sense. I don't think the elves got any of them.

It's as explained a theory of mine. When Minas Ithil is conquered and Isildur escapes with the sapling of the White Tree, Sauron would have gotten the Palantír from Minas Ithil. It is nowhere mentioned what happened with it and it's later back in Gondorian possession (Sauron later gets the Palantír from Minas Ithil, in the Third Age when it becomes to Minas Morgul). My theory was Isildur maybe took the Palantír from Mians Ithil with him and he travelled over Rivendell to Annúminas. As a result it might have been for a time in Rivendell. The Other option would be, Sauron did not find it or Sauron got it and it was taken away from him again after the War of the last Alliance (also possible).

What an excellent video. I think i watched it all the way through 3 times in the last couple of days over the course of several viewings. I agree with you regarding Galadriel and Celeborn being the founders of Eregion, or at least the most prestigious and influential members of the Elves who would inhabit the region and organize the "Kingdom". Which leads to a question I have; who do you think the original rulers of Eregion were? Do you think it was Galadriel and Celeborn exclusively, as King and Queen, or do you think it was some form of ruling council that also included Celebrimbor and the Gwaith i Mirdain? I personally believe that while Galadriel and Celeborn were the founding members of Eregion, there was some sort of shared power structure that existed in the form of a ruling council, and that's why Galadriel and Celeborn were able to just pack up and leave without causing any massive disturbance to the government of Eregion. I believe Annatar was obviously the source of the wedge that grew between Galadriel and Celebrimbor, and while it didn't lead to the same sort of atrocities that would eventually occur in Numenor, the Gwaith i Mirdain became sort of like the "King's Men" faction of Numenor, and let their hubris and desire for knowledge and power cloud their judgement, ultimately leading them to reject the warnings of someone as respected and influential as the daughter of Finarfin, the High King over all the Noldor, and as such a princess of the Noldorin royal family. Just curious what your thought are on this. And thank you again for this splendid labor of love.

Your videos are, as always, top-tier. I know English is not your first language, so here's a systematic correction you could implement in the script for future videos. Whenever you talk about what was the future from the perspective of some past event, the grammar structure "future in the past" is used. Instead of "will," "would" is used. For example, you said something like, "Sauron started to build what will become his fortress in Mordor." The correct version is: "Sauron started to build what would become his fortress in Mordor." Since Tolkien content involves talking about a lot of narratives, I thought this grammar point could be useful. Also, you say, "Check my other video about...." I'm not sure if the word "check" is used in this way in British English, but, as far as I know, the word doesn't fit this context. It would sound more natural to say, "Check out my other video about...."

"The Nature of Middle Earth" is NOT a JRR Tolkien/Christopher JRR Tolkien book and therefore not something I will purchase or read as a reference to canon.

But Nature of Middle-earth contains J. R. R. Tolkien's writings and those were not published before. The parts that were edited are mentioned in the notes and the Editors commentary is written in a smaller font size, so you can always easily see what was written by Tolkien and what not. Further it also gives you the dates of when the texts were written, which I appreciate. As a result it's imo a fantastic book which would perfectly fit to HoMe. The only part that people might criticise would be the Appendices, where Hostetter gives us some of his metaphysical interpretations and they are also at the very end and separated from all the other texts. When it comes to canon (of content), that is always a complicated topic outside of The Lord of the Rings, The Road goes ever on, the Adventures of of Tom Bombadil and The Hobbit (all published during Tolkien's lifetime and written by him). The first edition of The Hobbit is also not "canon" (even inside the story) and The Hobbit in of itself has some unusual details, which seem inconsistent here and there (due to the nature of it written so early and before the ideas from LotR existed). So I totally understand you point. I also see UT, HoMe, etc not as "canon", but sometimes they offer information we find no where else and then here it gets interesting.Same with Nature of Middle-earth or History of the Hobbit.

Canon when discussing Tolkien is complicated. I find the simplest interpretation is that anything published by Christopher that doesn’t have something else published contradicting it is strict canon. For everything else it’s up to you. The history of Galadriel and Celeborn is, as Christopher put it, full of problems.

Yes as said in the video, it's always difficult and that is why I tried to be very transparent with sources in the video. I think contradiction free information (in Christopher Tolkien's publications of his fathers texts) is often difficult to find, because Tolkien iterated so much and there might be cases where Tolkien simply abandoned an idea or where Tolkien was in the process of replacing an old idea, which leads to contradiction.

I've been reading Tolkein from when I first found a copy of The Fellowship of the Ring on the floor of my locker bay on the last day of my sophomore year in HS, 1968. One thing that I've never quite understood is why Sauron so deeply coveted the other Rings of Power, the rings of Dwarves, and the 3 of the Elves. Did these rings 'absorb' the strength of their former owners so He could take it for his own or were the rings a source of power unto themselves?

The Rings of Power according to my understanding have many negative side effects and are a way into corruption, but in their core, they are "rings of power" too, so rings that give its wearer power or enhance their existing powers. Sauron also uses them as those, when he recollects them. We can see it with the Nazgûl quite well. Having them as servants under his will also made Sauron more powerful and dangerous.

I know some channels just use artworks on the base of "good faith" or arguing with fair use, but I personally only use artworks where I have a written permission of the artist. Ofc I also have some fair use cases e.g. the film screenshots. But it's difficult to get a permission like this from e.g. Warner Bros. 😅 which is different for artists though.

It is very refreshing to see Tolkien youtube channel that is not superficial, works with further sources and even points to their contradictions. Really well done! One (absolutely minor) criticism: I simply cannot connect Elrond (as noble and as fair in face as an elf-lord… and as kind as summer) with Hugo Weaving. But I guess it is very hard to find other visuals than those inspired by Jackson’s adaptation.

I know this might be not a serious suggestion, but In the books the scene in Mount Doom with Isildur does not exist, he and Círdan just give Isildur the advice to go there and throw it into the fires of Mount Doom. Also Elrond probably would have risked war with Men when he would have murdered Isildur. I would also say the One Ring would have gotten power over Elrond, if this murder was truly in his heart. To quote Gandalf: "It was Pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and Mercy: not to strike without need. And he has been well rewarded, Frodo. Be sure that he took so little hurt from the evil, and escaped in the end, because he began his ownership of the Ring so. With Pity." I would further add, that this deed would be very out of character for Elrond and very much against Tolkien's philosophy. So I don't think he screwed up there, he did the right thing.

haha yes it's for sure weird for some people, but it really is round about how Tolkien described the pronunciation of those names. Modern English is a very unusual language phonetically (compared to most other Germanic or even Indo-European languages). Esp. how vowels are pronounced. You could say English is kind of an exception, because if people pronounce the names according to their native language (Swedish, German, Spanish, Italian or the many Slavic languages, etc), it often is not that different from what Tolkien described (except for some nuances). That is also why Old English sounds so different (which we also finds use in Tolkien's world).

That is a suggestion I get a lot over the years and I never figured out how to handle it. Tolkien clearly describes that the R is trilled/rolled in many names. Some people seem to dislike the sound and I tried to trill less strong (I have quite a strong trill 😅). If I would stop now (after trilling the R in all my lore videos for 6 years by now) and anglicise all names, I think my core viewer base would complain and the hardcore fans would write "lol you say the names wrong". As not native speaker English pronunciation is often also quite unpredictable, esp. with anglicised fantasy names. Do I pronounce Thráin as "thrane" or "thr-ay-n" (instead of Thr-oh-in)? And if I apply the pronunciation rules Tolkien wrote down without the trilled R, it seems strange to me ignoring that one rule. What so bad about the trilled trilled R? If we include the tapped R it's a very typical pronunciation for the R that occurs in a ton of spoken languages and dialects (even more so in old languages). In contrast the English pronunciation of the R is far more uncommon. So it always wonders me that people dislike it so much.
