African Roots: Kwame Nkrumah (1909 - 1972) was a Ghanaian politician and revolutionary. He was the first prime minister and president of Ghana and an influential pan-Africanist. Nkrumah was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) . He spent many years of his academic career in the US and England. He returned home to lead Ghana to independence in 1957 and become its first president. However his vision of a US-style union remained unfulfilled.

This animation could have been so much better. What's with that Sub-Saharan Africa thing. Isn't it the same continent? It's interesting how you only look at Nkrumah as a 'failed socialist'. Nevermind that the US sabotaged his vision too.

Let me ask you that if your legal government brought the nation to a moment when it was about to become economically independent from colonial domination of your market place only to get it all taken away by internal traitors and outside forces, would you call that a failure, or an illegal seizure of the constitutional government? He was a successful socialist, which is why he was overthrown. The west knew they would lose control of Afrikan resource wealth, and eventually, Afrikan people everywhere. The fact that Ghana was a shining example for other territories on the continent to follow could not be allowed to fully develop. As it was Nkrumah had survived five assassination attempts as President of Ghana.

I totally oppose your view that Kwame Nkrumah was a failure, because I know he wasn’t a failure ever. Our hero brought free healthcare, free education, building training colleges for teachers, Tema and Aksombo. I don’t call him a failure.

He may have made some mistakes, but he was not a failure. He was a man called by God to free Africa from colonisation. In addition, he inspired the black liberation movement in America.

Correction #DWTV: In the video at about 0:58, it was written that #Nkrumah and the #BigSix declared independence. No! That's not true. The people standing on the platform with Nkrumah during the declaration were members and executives of the #CPP. The other leaders of the #Big6 had later become opposers of the independence movement. Pls correct it! Thank u!

I donot accept your title failed socialist visionary..He is much more than that. His vision is of PAN AFRICANISM is the only hope for Africa. Beginning with such a negative title eclipses Nkrumahs greatness.

This is very serious, and that's the price we are paying for not learning and appreciating our culture, even bad totalitarian leaders like Mobotu sese seku of Congo spent 40yrs without doing anything for Congo.... Kwame Nkrumah such an epitome for the rise of Africa against the world was killed in less than 7yrs after being the President...

Please there's nothing like big six winning independence for Ghana. Those who declared independence on the podium is not big six. Only Nkrumah is known among those on the podium. And those who stood on the podium on that very faithful day were not even up to six. Stop twisting fact and propagating fallacy as u did to our ancestors. Nothing in the video is worth learning

Kwame Nkrumah in his speech promoted Socialism. But I don't believe he is a socialist as the Western greedy people think. Kwame Nkrumah was a man who believed in the Power of Independence. Kwame Nkrumah was a man who believed African can develop when they take responsibility for their own destinies. Kwame Nkrumah believed Africans can be at par with the Europeans and and any other continent. Kwame Nkrumah believed the African Man is not inferior and that the African can even do more great things than any other person. This was what Nkrumah believed in and a generation of Africans will one day appreciate that and develop our continent.
