"Terios was always meant to be a similar character to Shadow." Terios isn't really a character though. People talk about him like he is a different character than Shadow. He is not. Terios IS Shadow. He's just a part of the creative process. This guy does exist, as Shadow. It's just some concept character designs with a concept name. Terios was meant to serve the same role in the story, and almost certainly had the exact same backstory and characterization as Shadow. That said, retrofitting these concept designs into a new character is something I think is pretty fun. I've seen one idea for him that he is another prototype for the Ultimate lifeform made between the Biolizard and Shadow. What a super great concept for him, considering his real origin.

I’ve always said Terios made it more understandable on why GUN thought Sonic went rogue but admittedly, I’m glad the changed the final design considering Shadow looks less like an edgy recolor of Sonic by comparison. My guess is that they were emphasizing the whole “Evil Sonic” thing with Terios before deciding that Shadow should be his own character in the final product.

I'd say it was likely a cover story from GUN that the public reasonably believed because Sonic has publicly changed colors before (Perfect Chaos fight), made his spikes stand on end, and has an affinity for the chaos emeralds. I mean... which sounds more plausible? Sonic is just changing colors again... or another hedgehog that mirrors Sonic's abilities was created in a laboratory in space with funding from the government decades before Sonic was even born, and he's been in suspended animation all this time and just now broke out. Yeah, you tell me which sounds more like a conspiracy theory!

@@Lugbzurg I kinda look at it this way. If G.U.N genuinely thought Sonic was Shadow (scene after the first boss in the Hero story), in there minds they're basically done and can put him away right? Why didnt they put Sonic back deep within Prison Island (his password protected capsule) where Shadow was if they really did think Sonic was Shadow? What they do instead is put him in a random jail cell that tbh Sonic can break out of. But funnily enough what G.U.N does afterwards is track down Eggman at his base (Sand Ocean). They know he broke in and got Shadow. Eggman wasnt trying to hide his face. He just showed up guns a blazin' as per usual. In the Japanese version for the recap of Radical highway, Shadow even alludes to this possibility. I feel like that plot point just needed to be emphasized more to create less confusion.

@@jamster1100 he’s more based off Super Sonic but at least he doesn’t resemble Sonic at face value, at least compared to Terios. You could technically say he’s a recolor of Super Sonic in that regard but considering Terios literally was a clone of Sonic down to his quill style, I’d say Shadow is less of a recolor by comparison. Compare it to someone like Nazo for example. Turns out he was a scrapped Super Sonic redesign but many people thought he was distinct enough from Sonic to consider him a separate character, albeit a fan character.

Oh man I remember seeing this design and just thinking of what could've been. I'm glad they went with the design of Shadow though, it just suits the series and world better than what they were going for with Terios. The development of SA2 is super interesting in general, even things like when Tails wasn't even going to be a playable character. It's always a good dive in.

Glad I'm not the only one that sees the Terios elements in Infinite. as for the whole "Shadow looking like Sonic" thing, I think people take for granted how Iconic Shadow is now. But back at the time when Shadow was new, there was no way to describe him outside of calling him "Black Sonic". In fact, I remember showing drawings of Shadow I drew as a kid and people would point and say "hey,. its Sonic" because when you don't know who Shadow is, there isn't much other way to describe him.

Plus, there's also the fact that Super Sonic has a very similar appearance as Shadow (this due to the fact that Shadow was based off of Super Sonic just as the Bio Lizard was based off of Perfect Chaos) So they probably assumed it was a different form of Sonic. Plus, it also works for the military trying to hide the existence of Shadow so they just pin it on Sonic.

Im really glad this wasn't the final design. Shadow's final design is still edgy, but also fits the feel of the game and isn't just a straight up Sonic recolor with a scar. He's not overcomplicated, not as edgy as the beta design, and is even still cute (i mean they're animal characters, if they aren't cute you kinda fucked up). Shadow is far more appealing to look at than this beta design by a long shot, i feel like he has the same issues as the Sonic Boom designs where just throwing on extra details doesn't make a design better, if done improper it takes away from it so much. Sonic designs are at their best when they're simple but full of personality, it's part of the reason why people love the side characters like Knuckles and Tails so much and i think is a major part of the reason why Shadow was so popular in the first place. Even non Sonic fans will agree that the characters are well designed and recognizable.

While your comment is true for the most of its arguments, that's completely dumb to reduce the concept of a character sharing Sonic's design to a simple recolor. Remember that Sonic is a rich series that can try any concept, so it's totally possible to find a good explanation to the reasons why there are people who look like him without being him. The cloning is more than a great and fitting idea for Sonic. And Terios could totally have the perfect traits of the evil clone of Sonic made by Eggman and/or something else. Sonic's community loves to minimize any concept Sega tries and calls it negative either way. While the good solution would be to try and find the potential in any of them.

Naming him Shadow could be considered a bit on the nose (though just the right level of on the nose IMO), but a name that literally means exactly "reflection of" is.... kinda pushing it lmao. Also, I noticed the design with the scar has the eye on the side of his face it's on is all faded and whited out, which gives me impression he's blind or partially blind in that eye. I'm glad we got Shadow, even if he has been kinda bastardized now, though it could be interesting to see Terios given new purpose, maybe as a counterpart for Shadow instead. I mean that in the sense of him being a sorta embodiment and reminder of what Shadow used to be and what he could have been if he'd kept going down a dark, angry, evil path. Maybe Shadow even tries to help him come to the same realizations and growth he did but finds it just isn't going to happen and Terios just is this way and the only option is defeat him however necessary. Maybe he's also a sorta bioengineered super soldier much like Shadow, but instead from some sort of extremist or purist group, maybe one from Mobious itself, maybe the group is mad at the franchise's cast for coming to Earth and sorta joining its peoples and world and befriending humanity and other non-Mobians. Since Amy was an important of Shadow's realizations and decisions at the end of Sonic Adventure 2, as described in Game Apologist's video, maybe the breaking point where Shadow realizes Terios isn't going to change could involve Terios being a jerk to her in some way and Shadow's just like "Aight, that does it, you're done!"

I would like to see the concept of Terios make it through as it's own character like maybe the metal sonic to shadow's sonic and he can have the personality of Mandate Shadow so Shadow doesn't have to be ruined anymore as a character. His origin maybe he was a old project of guns that was before project shadow that would then be immedietly discarded for project shadow giving him some reasonable angst to hate shadow given that shadow was his replacement and he was just forgotten about. Not much just a brainstorm.

I think they should revisit the old Terios concept and make him into a separate character, however that would kind of oversaturate the role of “evil Sonic” or his rival, just like it did when Sonic Adventure 2 came out and Knuckles was Sonic’s first rival. Kind of unrelated, but Doom Legacy of Rust reused old assets and concepts and recycled them into new concepts which is a really cool idea and great fan service.

The name "Terios" was first discovered when people looked through the ISO for Sonic Adventure 2 for Dreamcast for the first time. Shadow's files in the game are still named "Terios". Also early previews of the game (one was in gamepro iirc) describe earlier drafts of the story. I can't remember which name was used but the story details were pretty different with Shadow indeed sounding more edgy.

Great video, Chaomix! I've always loved Terios' design ever since I first laid eyes on him several years ago, and this video reinforced that love. While I think Shadow was better overall as his own distinct character (both aesthetically and power wise) I would have loved to see some aspects of Terios be channeled into Shadow's design! For example, I would love if instead of black, shadow's fur was dark blue, like Terios. And maybe he would have a scar and cloak upon his return in Heroes, or at the end of the Evil route in Shadow the Hedgehog. Keep up the great work, man! Something I honestly was convinced of as a kid was that Terios ended up being repurposed as some alternate Zone Shadow from the Archie Comics. I was fully aware of how Scourge (Sonic's anti-version) was just an evil version of Sonic, so my thought process was that Terios was sort of the same for Shadow, but since both were more on the "anti-hero" list ultimately their personalities were exactly the same but their looks differed. Granted after going back through the comics and filling in that blank information from how spotty my comic collection is, that wasn't the case, but I think it would have been an interesting idea if they had repurposed his design in that way.

Great video as always! I agree that it helps with that main plot hole, that was the one thing I didn’t care for was how they handled Amy and her mistaking shadow for Sonic. But this is still my fave Sonic game. Terios sounds so cool, but I understand that process. As a writer myself who is currently working on a graphic novel, I look back at some of my earlier concepts and see how much a character can change. One of my main characters and the main love interest had five different iterations before I finally found the right fit. And some of them were pretty awesome. But the end product turns out to be the best. And I think that can be said with Shadow as well. Keep making these awesome videos!

It's mostly the localisation. It wasn't perfect and Shadow was sort of a dougebag at some points in japanese, but only the pure hero dark-ending really got unbelievable. It did not damage his essence, which the 2010s certainly did. It's also a relevant point of connectivity between Heroes and the games(Battle, 06) where he seems to be finished with his selfdiscovery.

Most of the noncanon-endings are either ok or actually good writingwise, one in particular is actually greater than the canon one. But that one ending goes like "Shadow and Sonic fight because Shadow is annoyed and then laughs like crazy because he is strong".

Well the one where Shadow becomes depressed and commits suicide offscreen while Vector fails to save him was over the top. Like I understand Vector as a character wouldn't know what to do in this situation but he still should've tried harder.

I need to replay the game in japanese at some point to see more of what they changed during localization, but to me Shadow 05 felt like a shameless trend-chasing cash-grab that mostly rode on Shadow's popularity as a character at the time to deliver a subpar game, which is why they didn't care about mischaracterizing him as much as they did. Even though Heroes didn't have the best writing and to me started the trend of flanderizing the main cast, that game presented a much different Shadow from the one in Shadow 05, one that was more faithful to how he was in SA2.

I feel that Sega made a good decision to put Shadow instead Terios. Terios does seem like a redeemable character or character that looks like an ally to Sonic and his friends. But, going through the video made me think with if Terios died in SA2 and was reformed in shadow. It would actually be a concept and explain some problems like in Sonic heros and Shadow the hedgehog.

i think Terios is trying to be 100% a dark/evil version of Sonic while Shadow is both that but his own character, Honestly if Robotnick ever thinks of using Cloning as a new way to take out Sonic instead of Robots, Terios being Sonic's more powerful clone sounds like a neat af concept. i can imagine both Terios and Metal Sonic fighting Sonic in a 2v1.

7:37 Something I feel the need to mention about those golden brackets in particular is, this seems like a clear sign that those were meant to be limiter rings VERY early on. We haven't seen that concept actually used until Sonic 06, but clearly the idea predates even Shadow's redesign. They were planning for this from the very beginning.

I don't mind Shadow being edgy as long as he's not acting completely out of character like in Boom and TSR. 06 Shadow was edgy as fuck and he still kicked ass. I give Shadow the Hedgehog (the game) as pass because there's the argument that he had amnesia and didn't really understand a whole lot going on, with the only thing he really knew was that his name was Shadow and that he was the Ultimate Lifeform. I just wish Shadow's game had a better more consistent story, kinda like his story in 06 which IMO is Shadow at his best.

I'm not a big fan of Terios' design and I'm glad we got Shadow instead. It's only because he reminds me too much of "Coldsteel the Hedgeheg." Also, I find it sad that some fans still think G.U.N. mistaken Shadow for Sonic even though the plot tells you that G.U.N. was fully aware of Project Shadow's existence. They framed Sonic because Project Shadow was a top secret government project and wanted to covered up the Space Colony tragedy. I wish people paid more attention to the plot.

I really wish Terios stayed in the series, even if he was just in a cartoon or the comics. I love Shadow, he's one of my favorite characters, but I feel like they could have both in the series. Give Shadow his proper personality back, and then take Terios, and give him his own story. SEGA probably doesn't even remember Terios though considering he was last thought about by them 20 years ago (Geez, SA2 is that old!?)

I'm so happy Shadow exists - even despite how the sega team portray him now - but I think Terios would be a good character for modern sonic, using a different dimension twist. We know its canon from Generations that travel between these dimensions is plausible, so having him from a scrapped dimension or something would be awesome :)

I actually love this design and somehow hope it comes back. I do love shadow (sa2 edition) but Terios' design kinda looks better and actually looks like sonic. And as for his design was the one shown in the title, that looks so cool
