It was always going to be Harry or Zayn. Unfortunately Zayn has shown he can’t handle fame or success well, so naturally it went to Harry. Though it would’ve been interesting if Zayn’s story turned out a little different and he had Harry’s level of success but doing a more pop R&B thing.

I think you nailed it. Harry’s replay factor has set him apart from the rest. While the others have some good songs, they get boring really quickly while Harry’s songs are still charting high and have a timeless feel already.

I think Niall is a victim of being overlooked due to his image in 1d. It’s harder for him to blow up like Harry because he is less known to the masses but he has the albums thst could have been much bigger. He needs top pick a better lead single next album

Niall is still my all time favorite, HBW is just a masterpiece. same rating! but it's tight between louis and zayn for reasons.

Depends on the musical taste fam,for instance some will say Zayn is far better(if they like R&B).You cannot just declare that some one is the best and expect others to agree to it . Different musical tastes , Different artists . Coz if Zayn starts promoting his music and people outside 1d fandom start listening to his songs I bet he will be on a different level but the one direction fans with only one dimensional musical tastes (mind the pun)will not categorise him as good one cause they believe that their musical tastes are actually universal.

@@joshua7060 of course i'm only talking about my own taste here. and i get what you're saying but still, directionners mainly loved 1D because of their pop rock music, and it's more likely that they'd still be into that genre later on than switch to say RnB or other musical styles (although still very possible!), and i'm sorry to say this, but Zayn not promoting his own music is mainly on him, there's no modest to blame anymore (jk plz don't kill me lol) but again i get where you're coming from, i'm listening to zayn's music and i love his voice sm , him being my number three doesn't make him less than the others, it's just me underlining my preferences in total subjectiveness. (i apologize for my english, i'm not a native speaker.)

i always thought 1D was too corny for the kind of music i wanted to listen when i was 13 (i was the target audience when they were at the top lol). A couple years after they broke up, i got curious and stumbled on harry's first album, and it was so freaking good. That was my favorite album for that year and know i follow his career religiously. Its obvious that he is massively talented, but i think his biggest strength is his honest love for music, his lack of fear in regard to being himself, and doing the kind of music he wants to do.

Harry took his time and stopped chasing trends before releasing his debut. Niall also did the same to an extent. Liam and zayn just went straight after trends. Louis took his time, but there is some trendy and quality less things there. In my ranking, Harry Niall Louis Zayn Liam (Don't mean liam is the least talented)

I think they all had crazy potential but your right about nearly everything. My ranking: Harry - Smart about musical choices, branding, styling and the fact that he hasn’t needed one feature since jump is impressive and not to be overlooked. Wears his influences on his sleeve in the best way. He’s genuinely appreciative of his start in the band and that’s always nice too. Niall - Great music that doesn’t feel like it’s trying too hard. The features he does have are usually great and fitting. Louis - I like the Brit/pop sound but think he needs to dive into one genre. If it’s punk submerge fully. If it’s indie do that. I have faith in his next project. Zayn - he’s got the chops, the songs I enjoy of him are really good. He’s just not likeable to me or very interesting. A lot of his songs sound the same. Liam - i haven’t liked a single song he’s came out with. He’s too consumed with following trends. A lot of his projects sound like Justin Bieber throw aways.

I kinda don't agree with you on Zayn part ,I do agree his songs are a bit too R&B but he is the most experimental with his music and his latest album , literally not even one song is the same .Ya he does go into a lot falsettos and so strong headvoice and it becomes so jarring and the focus on the song is diluted ,him trying to focus too much on his range instead of his real voice is a unfortunate thing.

@@amitkolachina7922 I’ll have to check out his last album, I don’t think I gave it a full run through. So I definitely will. I didn’t mean every song sounded the same, but to me a lot of the ones I heard follow the same themes sonically. And maybe you’re right that it’s his tone of voice and the falessto that I’m just not a fan of. I can’t deny how crazy talented he is, so maybe at the end of the day it’s just the genre and marketing I haven’t been super interested in.

I will admit I had been super supportive towards Zayn even after he left 1D because he was a Muslim. Even after I read one of his interviews and thoughts on 1D which definitely hurt me a little, but I continued supporting him to see if he could bring something great. And I was disappointed with every releases and singles he put out. I can see he was ambitious and a bit rebellious, but never went far enough to consider following him again in the future. Harry was a huuuuge surprise to me. While he was the most recognizable member in 1D instantly (with that cute, charming smile and fun attitude), he wasn't what I thought to have musical prowess. Until he brought Sign of the Times and I was blown away. And he kept getting better album after album, singles after singles. If anything, he was the one that delivers something fresh, different and outright great-- I can't believe how much I underestimated that bloody bastard. During 1D era, my ranking would have been like this: Zayn, Liam, Niall, Harry, Louis But my current standing is now this: Harry, Niall, Liam, Louis, Zayn.

I was (still am) a huge one direction fan but even back then I couldn’t help but be excited for the prospect of Harry’s solo work because it was obvious he was he very much into rock. I also really enjoy Niall’s music and occasionally listen to some Louis but Harry is numero uno. It’s honestly easy to forget he was part of 1D because he’s really come into his own.

“Kiwi” is my favorite Harry Styles song and the song that won me over with him. It does my heart good seeing someone like him be as much of a rockstar as he is a pop star. I hear “This Town” by Niall Horan a lot when I go shopping, and it’s a charming ballad, but Harry blows everything out the water.

I was never a huge 1d fan it's not like I disliked them or anything though, I did know their big hits and found harry hot af (like everyone did) but that was abt it with 1d. Then when they all went solo I came across Harry's music I loved it so much and checked out more of his stuff and fell down this rabbithole lol, he really has a great voice and I really love the direction/genre he took with his music. he's very talented and his performances r on another level, I think that was prob the cherry on top for me and really made me a fan, the way he's a total beast on stage, he was def born for it and ngl I'm glad he's solo now lol, when I look back at his old vids with 1d out of curiosity he really just always stood out whether it was vocally or stage presence wise, he also just always had that rock vibe to him. i also love that alot of the great maybe even legendary artists out there are complimenting him and his music like fleetwood mac, motley crue, liam gallagher and the rolling stones.etc. it just proves that his music is really respected yk. (plus I love that he used to fanboy abt fleetwood mac when he was younger and is now really close friends with stevie nicks and mick fleetwood even got him to model for his brand, they call him their love child lmaooo and stevie says he's the son she never had)

2:46 I feel like the bad blood is mostly, if not all on Zayn’s hands, honestly. He said publicly numerous times that Harry was just an acquaintance, seemed really harsh to everyone involved with 1D the second he split (although some deserved it *cough* Modest and Simon Cowell *cough*, the other guys were going through the same stuff and didn’t deserve it), and was the only one who didn’t bother to show up for Louis when he personally reached out to him and the guys and asked them to come and support him for his first solo performance on the X Factor with Steve Aoki because it was just days after his mom’s passing, and he only went through with it because it was her dying wish for him to go on with the show. Harry, Liam, and Niall all showed up for him and hid backstage so the attention would stay on Louis, but Zayn didn’t show. Louis told that story in an interview somewhere and he said he doesn’t know when or if he’ll ever be able to forgive Zayn for it Edit: LOOOL this aged kinda poorly 😂 Liam just took responsibility for a good chunk of it 😂😂😂

I LOVE Harrys debut. I also listen to my vinyl copy often, It's near perfect. I knew he'd do well on his solo stuff after I found out he wrote Ariana Grandes Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart. When Niall Horan released his 1st song from Heartbreak Weather I loved it but I felt the album was underwhelming. But I def can tell from that song he has the potential.

imo i think louis actually has some gorgeous lyrics, especially in Only The Brave and some others. I love nial because he is able to capture feelings in songs, and his debut album "Flicker" is so gorgeously made, while heartbreak weather is more poppy. I don't listen to zayn or liam much but zayn is such a good vocalist, and for liam i honeslty don't know bc the only song I've heard from him is Strip That Down, whixh was okay. Overall, I think harry takes the cake, because he has taken his solo career a further step and been able to create this range of songs and genres through his music. 1. Harry 2. Louis/niall 3. back when i was a directioner (i still listen to their music every once in a while bc, let's be honest, they got some great tunes, i just wouldn't consider myself a fan anymore) harry was my favorite. when they broke up and everyone started doing their own thing, harry was the only one i continued to be a fan of. his music is simply great and feels timeless, it's a genuine joy to see him on stage and on screen, and he just has the perfect charisma of a star without ever having to try too hard. his personality tops it all off. niall has some good tunes (i really like on the loose and on my own) but other than that, nothing's really caught my eye. zayn obviously has a beautiful voice, but i'm mostly listening to songs he's a feature on (flames, dusk til dawn), his solo stuff has some good songs but, for someone with his voice, i find it a bit disappointing. louis i haven't heard anything of in quite some time, i just didn't like his stuff. nothing personal, he wrote/co-wrote a lot of 1d's greatest songs, bit i just don't feel his solo music. liam disappointed me the most, by far! i was sure he would be great on his own since he also wrote/co-wrote so many great 1d songs and has a nice voice, but his solo music is just lacking.... everything imo. i was especially shocked with the horrible lyrics on most of them, seeing as he wrote such good songs for 1d. but yeah, long story short: for me, in my personal, humble opinion, harry is simply the best.

Definitely different individuals prefer different kind of music. Louis' music initially was what most people would love and he would definitely have hit charts putting out music like that but he grew out of it to do music that he loves though most people don't prefer that kind of old brit pop. I am a big fan of good lyrics and sweet voice and love his music a lot🥰

I don’t think it is fair to criticise Louis because he went through a huge tragedy in his family (not one but two) and that definitely impacts his songwriting. He might be off to a slow start in terms of releasing solo album but i’m confident that with time, he will be able to find his voice as a songwriter. As for Liam, he has a great voice but he needs to not do what style is trending but rather take time to figure out what he truly likes. In my opinon, I think Liam is suitable to be like Michael Buble.

I agree to an extent about the tragic personal life affecting his music but I think Louis is trying to chase a UK Indie Rock career because he loves Oasis, Stone Roses etc but doesn't have the voice for it and that's why his music falls flat. Totally agree about Liam - I've always said he has the voice for a Michael Buble-esque album (his audition song was Cry Me a River!).

My Ranking: 5. Liam Payne - didn't really like his stuff to begin with. 4. Zayn Malik - Some of his tracks are a bit hard to listen to and I don't care for his work all that much. 3. Louis Tomlinson - He put out an "OK" record (Walls), but I've never been into it. 2. Niall Horan - First album was a bit boring for me, but his second album drew me in. 1. Harry Styles - Are we even going to argue here? Obviously has the best solo work and makes me sing out loud! Update: Louis Tomlinson's 2nd album "Faith In The Future" was actually really great (outside of just a few songs) and he might be giving Niall a run for the #2 spot, but Niall's still holding the spot for now.

Personally, I like Zayns work the best. He found his own vibe and that's with R'N'B, it's not everyone's vibe but you can't say it's bad just because it's not your vibe. Another reason I like him is he doesn't care about views or popularity, he doesn't chase fame or "trends" because if he did he'd promote his songs more or go on tours like the others, instead he just randomly releases music which shows he doesn't care about fame or trends and just releases music that he likes and is meaningful to him and to me that's what makes a true artist.

Zayn doesn't want to perform otherwise he'd do it, he has anxiety and he chooses not to perform, he stated when he left 1D that he just wants to live his life normally so if he really wanted to perform he could but he doesn't want to. Also, I think at one time he wanted a Grammy but not anymore cause he went on Twitter and said "F*ck the Grammys" and said that if he actually won one he probably wouldn't accept it. If Louis and Liam (who have less followers) are able to tour and perform then Zayn is definitely able to if he wanted to but he just doesn't want to be famous🤷🏻‍♀️

Honestly: Louis Tomlinson is my favorite although I can see and admire why Harry is a thousand times more popular (H is more musically complex, and has that star quality). Personally, I prefer Louis’ unique voice, down to earthness and artistry in general. I love Walls more than any album the other guys have put out (Flicker by Niall being a close second). I’m really into the brit pop influences it has and the positive lyricism. I think it is also important to acknowledge that Louis’ career has been deeply affected by personal tragedy, with his mother, grandmother and little sister passing away not too far apart. My personal ranking (of favorites, personally what I prefer, not who I think is objectively better) 1. Louis 2. Niall 3. Harry 4. Zayn 5. Liam

Absolutely. I think Sign of the Times is one of the greatest songs of the 2010's, and both his albums were great (although I think self-titled is substantially better than Fine Line). Zayn just felt like a fuse that burnt out super quickly considering he had so much hype surrounding him around his first album and now I barely hear anything about him (suggestion for Artists Who Never Lived Up To The Hype part 2?) While I didn't hate Pillowtalk, I could not understand the obsessive love over it, and feel really validated having discovered Todd In The Shadows' rant over it. And everything else was pretty mediocre, can't think of a song he had that I would consider even remotely good. I hated Niall's debut solo single This Town, but really liked Slow Hands and he had a couple of other pretty decent songs. Liam is EASILY the worst for countless reasons, dude has no personality and feels like a puppet on strings, and that one song he did that essentially fetishizes bisexual women is just the cherry on top of the turd-flavoured cake. The only thing good I can think about him is that his song with Rita Ora was pretty decent. I nearly forgot about Louis, which is a shame because I didn't think his solo music has been that bad. I quite liked his debut track with Steve Aoki (although I haven't heard it for years and don't know if I would still like it). I think he reinvented himself as an alt rock artist or something, but I'm not sure.

Personally I’m a huge Louie fan (along with Niall and Harry of course). He definitely has a good amount of mediocre songs but he also has some truly moving well written material like Two of Us and straight up bangers like Kill My Mind

Even if Harry is the standout and the most critically acclaimed, and more or less has a very listenable near perfect discography, he's oddly enough the one I come back to and listen to the least... In terms of who I just nowadays go back and listen to the most, and could look the most forward to future projects from, I would as one of few perhaps have to go with Tomlinson. Walls is more or less perfect in my book, absolutely adored the alternative / 90's Oasis-esque britpop sounds it was rooted in, and "Too Young" may just have become one of my favorite songs ever. Niall's "Flicker" is still another near perfect album, and one of my all time favorites, but man the same cannot be said about Heartbreak Weather... Honestly it left him in a bit of a rut, that I'm curious to see if he'll find his way out of. It felt like him chasing sounds and trying to fit into a scene he's just not naturally bred for, compared to the very organic, folky, country-esque sounds of his debut...

I guess I'm the odd ball here my ranking is 1. Louis 2. Zayn 3. Niall 4. Harry 5. Liam I used to be a directioner and came into the fandom again during the pandemic because I saw Harry's grammy performance, but his style isn't it for me. I mean my top artists are Louis, The Snuts, Twenty one Pilots and Babi. Fine Line is a good record definitely but his fans put me off and his prices are on the high side of things. I live in a third world country and work crazy hours to pay rent so it's not a possibility to me to participate in a fandom that's expensive,. Also having worked in politics the entire fandom discourse around his sexuality and who he's dating is very toxic and pretty much amazing pandering from his team to anyone and everyone. I mean they do want the most money after all, not to mention how much gaslighting fans experience, on any side of the fandom. I'm also not part of his marketing target. I'm interested in artists who don't need to achieve a god-like complex, someone relatable who I feel equal to and someone who values my input. I just didn't feel any concrete communication with Harry himself. He's a great guy don't get me wrong but he's meh for me, and I'm sure it reflects on my other ratings. The thing that sealed the deal for we though was Harry's House, it really really isn't my style, I only liked Matilda tbh

Liam paynes solo career really annoys me. I was the biggest 1d fan & he’s always had a beautiful voice. But the music is god awful. I wish he would make music with depth instead of trying to make a hit that never even becomes a hit.

I used to be a huge fan of 1D in my early teens but eventually grew out of their music. I think the reason why most of the members make pretty bland music is because being vocally talented or marketable enough to thrive in a boy band does not mean that you have what it takes to be an artist with an interesting musical personality. I would rank Harry > Zayn > Niall > Louis > Liam. I think most of us can agree Harry is the most charismatic member with a rockstar presence and incredible vocals. His music has the most depth. It can be refreshing, plus the production on his albums are superior. I would put Zayn above Niall. Zayn is inconsistent and makes bloated albums. Still I find his highs on his albums to be higher than that of Niall's. I think his vocal advantage has allowed him to establish a slightly more distinctive style. Niall is nice to listen to occasionally but most of the time I find him bland. Louis and Liam pale in comparison to the other three. I would put Louis above Liam because I feel like Louis is at least making a greater effort at making something that is true to him even if it's not the most interesting thing. I also feel that he's neither vocally talented nor interesting enough to shoulder a project by himself. Hence his stuff lacks range. Liam on the other hand is a decent vocalist but his music is devoid of personality and extremely generic.

I was never a huge One Direction fan, except for a few good songs, but as solo artists I really enjoy them, but I think Niall is the best in his solo music in my opinion, and my favourite of the band, even though I know he is underrated in my opinion, with some of his stuff, Harry’s music kind of feels similar to how Robbie Williams went in some ways, Liam has great stuff, too, considering he has only done one album, so far, but all the trouble he went through with Cheryl and everything like that, but his music is good in many ways, and Louis has great moments, but I agree with Jon that it’s not brilliant, but has some good tracks, but Zayn, I never really liked his solo stuff, it just annoys me to no end, but overall, their solo stuff is much better than they were in the band in my opinion, but Niall is my favourite out of them all, despite what everyone says. Ranking them: Niall Harry Liam Louis Zayn And these are just my opinions of them all.

I agree with you, even tho Louis is my favorite Harry has made his impact and has one the best debut songs (of all time in my opinion). I think Louis hasn't find his sound and songwriting style therefore he is working with multiple producers and songwriters in his debut album and that's why it comes very flat. Zayn had the best start with his first album but he couldn't really keep up. Niall is very mainstream and u don't seem him presenting nothing new in his music. And Liam, well haha. I loved Zayn in the band and understand he has a great voice, but his solo career is a complete bore. I also loved Liam’s voice but his songs are also dreadful. You can argue who is the best vocalist all day, but it doesn’t matter if they do nothing with it. Harry has a charming personality and doesn’t follow trends. His imagery is unique and he doesn’t waste all his time trying to blow up on pointless features that make no sense. I’ll also give props to Niall who is doing alright for himself. Louis was my least favourite vocally but I enjoy a lot of his songs more than Zayn or Liam who were considered to be the best.

I think personally my favorite is Louis. Zayn and Liam were never really my type of music and in general I think their music is just trying too hard to fit into musical trends and are therefore lacking in personality and interest. They’re both undeniably talented as vocalists as showed in one direction, but they’re both waistline that talent on stuff that is mediocre at best, especially Liam. Personally I think Nialls music is pretty good, but not something I typically gravitate to and I don’t usually listen to it unless it’s on the radio or something, but I definitely enjoy it when I hear it played somewhere. Harry’s music is great, it definitely stands out in terms of originality and talent. Definitely prefer the first album though, a lot of songs on the second album has been too over played to the point where I’m kind of sick of the album because I’ve just heard it way too much, but I have a tendency to get sick of songs very quickly if I’m not actively avoiding listening to them too much so I tend to like stuff less if it gets too popular. I think I gravitate more to Louis music because of the lyrics and the way he writes as well as just him as a person and the fandom. His music may not be as complex or unique as Harry’s for example, but he’s still finding himself and I think he’ll do even better on his next album. He’s been pretty open about how he’s struggled finding his own thing and how especially in the beginning prior to his walls album he used to give too much into the pressure of making trendy music rather than what he truly wanted and therefore those songs don’t really feel like him which is why he doesn’t even play those in shows anymore. He has also been very self conscious of his solo talent without the band and he’s been working on that. His more recent unreleased songs (“copy of a copy of a copy” and “change”) that he’s been playing in shows have been really good and shows how much he’s improving and it gives me hope that his upcoming album will be his best stuff yet. He’s said he’s the proudest he’s ever been of what he’s written for his next album so I’m looking forward to hearing it. I also like his fandom, from a fan perspective I gotta say his fandom is the best in terms of how everyone supports and accepts each other and act like a family, and also he feels like a part of that family because he’s always so close to his fans and I love that. I’m actually seeing him on March 27th in Oslo and I’m really looking forward to it. I’d say my ranking of their solo careers would be: 1. Louis 2. Harry 3. Niall 4. Zayn 5. Liam
