Melee Fox had a tier to himself once, but he was demoted from SS tier to regular S tier. 64 Pikachu also used to be the only character in S tier, but Kirby was later promoted to S tier as well, as he was closer to Pikachu in power than any character below him. Meta Knight is still the only character to remain in his own tier to this day though. (Also I think Brawl Ganon might have been alone in G tier or something at one point)

If you're counting Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard as separate characters as well as Pokémon Trainer I think Ivysaur in Brawl is the worst character ever. His frame data's terrible, his recovery's exploitable and he can't switch to Charizard in the air in Brawl. Thanks to type advantages Ivysaur takes extra damage and knockback from fire moves that like half the cast have. And that's not even getting into stamina

Brawl Meta Knight by a landslide. Rules were invented to shadow nerf him or restrict stuff like infinite dimensional cape. He had the best recovery in series with two glides & every single special move being a recovery option. Mach Tornado shield poked, destroyed mid-level play, & was amazing at high level (when used correctly). & he had no losing mus. Funny enough, he's very viable in ultimate. It's just really hard to make the character's design actually bad.

What was the most frustrating thing about Meta Knight in Brawl was that people would argue about the limitations and that they didn't need to be in there. And when talks of banning him came up, the top level players would say they weren't coming and it would cause a lot of other players to also claim they wouldn't go to tournaments, so the TOs were put in a bad spot. I used to go to Houston for their monthlies, and the guy running them, Xyro, would have side brackets for like... low-tier only characters for example because so many of them just got completely shut down by Meta Knight that they weren't tournament viable.

Smash 4 Bayo did get a huge nerf early on, which *seemed* to have done the trick, and after that it took a long time for the Bayo players to turn her into the absolute monster she became. Couple that with Nintendo focusing on Ultimate at the time, and it was the perfect storm that allowed Bayo to eventually ruin competitive Smash 4.

@@dtmuffinman Sakurai invented Wavedash and L-cancelling, so he definitely doesn’t hate competitive (neither now or then) But it is true that his lack of interest in being competitive viable was why Brawl got a lot of very unwelcome yank, the oversights specially hurt the balance of the game, thing that would happen again in a lesser extent during Sm4sh, custom moves in tournaments, rage, pre patch characters, and busted dlc definitely hurt what it could have been a far more balanced game That said I still love both Brawl and Sm4sh for what they were, great games despite their flaws

Tbh there are a lot of Similarities between Bayonetta and Meta Knight when you look into it. Bayonetta had a few characters that could challenge her, but it was always terrifying because if she got the hit she would Zero to death you to all hell. Meta Knight had like 2 characters (Ice Climbers and Pikachu) that could somewhat compete with him, but he could counter-play them by arial camping against Icies or edge guarding and outplaying against Pikachu.

By the end of Smash 4's life many top players either mained Bayo or had a secondary Bayo (or Cloud, let's not forget him). I think if Ultimate didn't come out and the meta was allowed to develop further we would have seen Bayos just dominating every tournament, with the only characters being capable of possibility competing with her being Cloud and Diddy. The reason we didn't see her quite reach that point in comparison to Meta Knight is that she was DLC, and not only that but the very last DLC, so had far less time to develop than Meta Knight did. There was 6 years between Brawl and Smash 4 (with no patches or DLC in that time obviously) and less than 2 years (something like 21 months) between Bayonetta's release in Smash 4 and the launch of Smash Ultimate (with a couple of balance patches thrown in for good measure).

Another thing thing about 4 Bayo that Ultimate fans might not realize was Bayo was the only character with combos. 4 decided to basically remove hitstun and give characters OBSCENE amounts of disadvantage tools. In 4 you were lucky to have a 2 hit confirm combo, downthrow up air became a meme in 4 because for a ton of characters that was literally all they had if they wanted a 2 hit combo and there was no way you were going to get a confirm, 4 was largely neutral into a string of option coverage. Throughout 4's lifespan it's top tiers were always populated by the characters with obscene neutrals, Villager, Diddy, Shiek, Rosa, Zero Suit, Sonic, Corrin and Cloud all had absurdly strong neutral games but Bayonetta had comparatively, a very weak neutral, it wasn't a bad neutral but among her contemporaries it wasn't good. Bayonetta however brought something to Smash 4 that the game had never seen before, true 0 to death combos. These weren't Twitter clips either, these were easy, these were so easy and consistent that Bayonetta's reveal trailer even had 1.

ngl tho if you grinded the meta knight ditto over and over, you would become a neutral god, since that's literally the entire matchup, whoever wins neutral more wins the match. Compare that to melee, where punish game matters a lot more (unless u played like samus or smth lol) I remember some top brawl player was going over an old VOD of a brawl mk ditto, and literally in the first 5 seconds both metaknights were already baiting and microspacing everything, trying to get the edge in neutral. This might be a bit late, but Meta Knight reminds me of 2012-2013 Dragon Rulers deck of Yugioh. The only reason they weren't tier 0 when released was because there was a card called Spellbook of Judgement came out around the same time. They had to nerf or essentially ban all of the cards, except limit to 1, the 4 actual monsters. Due to that, leaving those 4 monster cards in-play, still made several decks meta out a 40 card deck. People found out that Dragon Rulers could mix with other dragon decks and those decks instantly became meta. It wasn't bad until 2015 and there was another card that was incredibly broken, but increadibly hard to summon came out. Those 4 Dragon Rulers made that 1 card possible to play with. Afterwards, there was an emergency ban on Dragon Rulers mid-season during that time period.

Do most tournaments ban wobbling? I remember it being controversial but it was considered too unreliable to win brackets. As for freeze glitch, I would ban it for being spectator-unfriendly, not strong. Plenty of scenes in Central US/overseas allow it and say it's not hugely impactful

I’ll still never forget going to a tournament in Jersey where M2K ADHD WILL and a bunch of other players were. I had a great time and got to play friendlies with some top players. Mind you, if it means anything- I beat Ally’s metaknight on AllisBrawl when he tried experimenting with him for a short time and ADHD in diddy dittos online. Anyways - So I get to bracket and win a set and then my first loss was to an evenly matched diddy/falco main which I thought was so cool at the time since there wasn’t many. Then I get to a 14 year old metaknight player…. BRUH. He only spammed up B and nado and I was baffled that I had never played someone who did this (because it was borderline disrespectful). He timed me out and wouldn’t press any other buttons all game as he ran from me the ENTIRE set. It was so bad, that as soon the last game ended he looked at me like a child does to his parents when they’ve done something wrong and says “I’m so sorry”. Andddddd that was my last brawl tournament experience lol.

Bayo or Meta Knight free. Fox, although thr best in melee has some clear weaknesses and the meta for melee has evolved a lot to counter fox. Only other case to be said is pika in 64, but in that game the only other threat was kirby and pika was deemed better solely for his recovery. Bayo and meta knight though made their respective games impossible for the people in competitive that didnt use them

Correct me if I’m wrong but from my perspective why did meta knight not get nearly as much hate moving from brawl to sm4sh that bayo did throughout all of sm4sh to ultimate? I wonder what about her specifically people hated so much they made an exception to be SO toxic.

I honestly like Joker being best in Ultimate. Setting aside the fact that he HAPPENS to be the protagonist of my favorite game of all time, he's a managable top tier; he's only at his best in a temporary state (granted, a state that's easy to get into thanks to his Down B), and even then, his frame data is not so absurd that he's unchallengable. And I also think there's extra merit in the fact that he's not universally considered the best, as there are at least two characters in contention for that slot, which means he's not the best by a mile; more like a few inches, and the judges are still determining if it's even him that's a few inches ahead. Compare this to Meta Knight, who shapes the entire meta around him (befitting of his name) and Bayonetta, who single-handedly ruined an entire game just by showing up. They were very poorly conceived, and I'm glad they were brought in balance with the rest of the cast for later entries.

I'd love to see a tier list for each character, showing which Smash game they're best in/worst in. Ganondorf's best version would be SSBM, right? But would his worst be Ultimate, Brawl or WiiU? He's pretty much at the very bottom in all 3 games.

I would strongly argue for pre patch Diddy to be the best smash 4 char. People forgot how stupid that character was at top level. The only character that could force you to shield becuase of banana, but also had grab combos at any percent, and guaranteed dthrow up air killing earlier than 100%. Other than having the best neutral by far, being small, fast and hardly edgeguardable. I agree that Bayo was easier to pick up and easier to win with, but top level diddy just couldn't lose

Despite the players behind the characters, I think Evo 2017 grands for Sm4sh just shows how broken Bayo was. The diddy was up by about 80% and Bayo did up-b once and it was over.

I don’t like the argument where this character can’t do strategy A so that means he’s the best. There were many limitation of what certain character can and can’t do. Peach’s side stalling on fountain, jiggly puff song infinite, Icies freeze glitch (and now wobbling). Banned poke floats as a counter pick stage because of fox. Same thing with hyrule castle and Kirby. All of the miis and customs were banned, and no infinites in ultimate (and every other game) can go past 300%. Meta knights scrooging and infinite dimensional cape were form of stalling but everything else in his kit was fair game and invalidated enough character outside and even in the top 5 in that game.

Only because 1. They are still pretty new (remember it actually took a long time for Smash 4 Bayo to win a major before Salem eventually won Evo) and 2. There's a guy called MKLeo that seems to be the only player currently capable of consistently beating the character. If Leo hadn't attended those events, Sparg0 and Cosmos would have both won majors by now. And Leo himself is picking up Aegis as a secondary now. Ominous.
