Manu was a legitimate all star caliber player. But he pace was not the best fit as a first quarter starter because the spurs obviously had a low tempo offense in the 2000s . He could average 25 points in a higher tempo offense. Pop gave him the keys to the offense when Tim Duncan went off the floor and he gave them the energy to end quarters

TRASH CAN, Hondo is 8-0 in the Finals, and is one of the very few players to sidekick an All Time Great player, become the best player on the team when the All Timer retires, and wins titles as the #1 guy on the team. That list is tiny. I can do only think of Hondo and Kobe as guys that pulled that off.

Yeah Cooper was the real deal. He's one of the best perimeter defenders ever (Bird said he was the toughest) and he was an efficient three point shooter. He'd be even more valuable in today's game where people shoot three's constantly, but in the 80's no one shot three's.

Ricky Pierce is underrated. He was an amazing and efficient scorer and I would rank him third best 6th man all time just edging out Ginobili. Just below Havlicek and McHale. In 89-90 season he averaged 23 PPG off the bench in just 29 minutes a game. Another 6th man who could have been considered is Eddie Johnson who is sadly often forgotten.

@@2nifty201 then there's Kukoc in the playoffs. he did shoot 49% one year in the playoffs, but he shot 39% one year and 36% for the other. overall though, i guess i was wrong on him being inefficient. i didn't realize he shot that well in general. Jamal Crawford really was inefficient. him and Kukoc really could be a toss up i suppose. Lamar Odom was more productive in the days he started. although maybe he was just never that great and his numbers went do due to more limited minutes when he came off the bench. but just 11 ppg as a 6th man for the lakers. well, sort of 6th man, started about 35 games a year

First off, just want to say I love the Hondo appreciation, he definitely gets slept on more than any other player in history outside of maybe Moses Malone. That being said, I'm not sure why you put McHale over him as a 6th man, as you didn't provide a specific reason why McHale has the edge in your eyes. You simply said both were comparable as 6th men and that you preferred McHale. I'd personally go with Hondo even as a 6th man because A. Hondo pretty much created or at the very least popularized the 6th man as we know it and B. All other things being equal I like it more when 6th men are swiss army knives as opposed to more specialized players. Not saying McHale is a specialist, I'm just saying he wasn't quite as versatile as Hondo.

Michael Cooper was a 3 and D guy before 3 and D was even part of the lexicon. Cooper was one of the best defenders ever at pure ball denial and locking up his man and also made several clutch shots in key playoff games, such as the game winner vs the Jazz in game 5 of the 1988 Western Conference Semifinals. McHale probably is 1. McHale is extremely underrated. There's a reason his low post game was referred to as a torture chamber because no defender had an answer for his low post moves. Hondo is underrated too, but at least he has fame from the most well known steal in NBA history. "Greer is putting the ball into play. He gets it out deep and Havlicek steals it! Over to Sam Jones. Havlicek Stole the ball!" Manu is going to make an interesting Hall of Fame case. He only has 2 All Star Selections, was never 1st Team All NBA, and his stats don't stand out but he was a key contributor to those Spurs Championship teams and he clearly had the talent. That point about Manu having a better legacy if POP had made him a career starter speaks to reality in that Manu is a Hall of Fame talent who may not get in due lower stats, limited All Star Selections, and No All NBA 1st Team selections. That said, it's a coach's job to do what's best for the team so if Manu being a 6th man was best for the Spurs as a team, then POP did the right thing.

This may sound a bit of a stretch, but I feel like if Michael Cooper were to be placed in a team where the offense solely relies on him, he can turn out to be an all star caliber player like Harden (I’m not tryna say he would be as good as Harden or better). My point is, I feel he would be in a Harden situation like providing great production off the bench and elevating his game as the only star on a team. Again it may sound outlandish, but it’s my take. Feel free to disagree wit me and I might be wrong for thinking that as well. Edit: Nvm Manu and John Havlicek is a better example

I have an issue with Manu being on any 6th man list, but like you, that has more to do with feeling like Manu never should have been coming off the bench most of his career and that Pop squandered his potential by forcing a guy with plenty of talent as a starter into a legacy limiting 6th man role. Can you tell I've recently become a huge fan of the NBA Storyteller?

I feel like Manu is going to be treated unfairly by history. In 10 years kids are gonna look on basketball reference and think "this guy never averaged over 20ppg, he can't have been that good".

I think Jamal Crawford could still be in the league, maybe riding the bench of a championship contender and scoring off the bench or become a tank commander for some teams

Lou Williams being a 6th man on the Clippers (before Kawhi and PG) is both weird and funny for me. He's the best player on that team, but still came off the bench 🤔🤣
