@CAHurst-uy9uz3 жыл бұрын
My theory is that she's Lilith. I believe Jadis is a descendant of Lilith, right? In many versions of Genesis, Lilith becomes the snake that deceives Adam and Eve. The Lady of the Green Kirtle ALSO becomes a snake. It would make sense if it were Lilith due to her seemingly appearing divine and ancient. Lilith was designed to be the perfect wife to Adam before Eve.
@MagusMarquillin3 жыл бұрын
I kind of like that. And if she's a Jinn like Mr. Beaver says, it might not be too hard for her to travel to other worlds - she would be an unusually corporeal Jinn though.
@07laines073 жыл бұрын
If you look to George McDonald’s Lilith from Phantasties; you may well be correct. McDonald was by Lewis’s admission his mentor. Lilith was in the apocryphal books was of the giant’s race rather than human. Then again so was Jadis. As Revelation mentions three faces of evil that stand against the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; the lady of the green kirtel is another manifestation of evil.
@milliesecond1022 жыл бұрын
Nope. Not biblical. Lilith is actually represented by the screech owl.
@earlwajenberg Жыл бұрын
Lilith is a nice theory, but some details are wrong. Lilith is nowhere in the Bible, except for a mention in passing in a list of demons and beasts that haunt ruined cities, and even there, the word may mean "owl." For a long time, she was just one more Mesopotamian night-demon, responsible for crib deaths, wet dreams, and night paralysis Then, in the Middle Ages, she showed up in "The Alphabet of Ben Sira," a book of satiricial Bible-based stories. This is the first mention of her as Adam's first wife, or as connected with Adam at all. In that story, she runs off to consort with the demons of the Red Sea and give birth to hordes of her own breed of demons, the Lilim. Later, she was sometimes identified with the Serpent in the Garden (which makes her a good candidate for the Green Witch), as seen in Michelangelo's painting of the Temptation. Dante Gabriel Rosetti's poem "Eden Bower," narrated by Lilith, is based on that idea.

(I haven’t watched part 2 yet so bear with me) I know it seems far fetched, but I have a theory; what if the Lady of the Green Kirtle was actually Jadis’s sister, the one we hear about in the Magicians Nephew?? Yes I know it’s crazy but hear me out. Jadis said in charn that before and her sister started the war, they both promised that neither side would use magic. Jadis says her sister “broke that promise”, so what could she do? Maybe the sister learned something like shape-shifting... Jadis also said “she even knew that I had the secret of the Deplorable Word.” So it’s not like Jadis’s sister didn’t know she had that power. What if she learned a spell that would transport her out of charn and into somewhere like the Wood Between the Worlds? So when Jadis began to speak the Deplorable Word, she cast her spell that transported her into either the wood or another world; the other world being Narnia. So Jadis thinks she’s dead by her hand, but she’s actually alive! When she arrives in Narnia, Jadis’s sister uses her magic to amass the Earthmen and build a kingdom underground so that one day she can take over the world. She chooses to stay out of Narnia while her sister ruled out of fear her magic is stronger than hers. And so, in my theory, two survivors of charn survive their worlds destruction. This is JUST MY THEORY!!! Hope y’all enjoyed 😂
@gargoyles99992 жыл бұрын
Jadis never says that her sister escaped and if Jadis was the more learned witch how could her sister have a get out of the world instantly spell but Jadis had to go into suspended animation until some kids woke her up. Plus Narnia doesn’t exist until she and diggory end up stumbling in while Aslan was creating narnia meaning that if her Sister was there before then she would’ve been just chilling in a void until Aslan showed up and decided to just let her stay while he made the world despite knowing she was evil and not kicking her out beforehand. The others stayed because Aslan was too busy creating stuff to stop and do anything.

I always somehow thought the Lady of the Green Kirtle was Jadis's sister. Not sure where I picked it up in the books, but after reading them, it just struck me that this was so because (to me) it explained a lot about her origin and abilities. Then when I came here and didn't see anything about them being sisters/related ... yeah, well. I was definitely disappointed about my apparent misrecollection.

I grew up watching the BBC Chronicles of Narnia and loved them so much. Barbara Kellerman was a masterful Jadis. With her playing both characters, I always felt the Lady of the Green Kirtle was Jadis reincarnated or had her energies. There's a deep connection there.
@MagusMarquillin3 жыл бұрын
The same thing happened to me; :) I think that deep down I wanted her back as the villain, and the Hag in Prince Caspian had teased it was possible! That hag was also played by Barbra Killerman, but I hadn't noticed that until she dropped the sweet facade and shouted: " *you can always get them Baaaack!* ", at that point my jaw dropped and I felt like she was already back, even though the story contradicted it, or like maybe she was being channeled. But that theory of Jadis and LotGK being the same is apparently controversial enough to get banned on at least one Narnia forum - I wonder if it originates from the BBC's Silver Chair, or if it predates it.

This mystery has always bothered me. I've always been curious about the "native" magic users of the world of Narnia. Jadis came from another world but the Green Lady, the Magician from "Dawn Treader" and the hag from "Prince Caspian" always really interested me. Are they from other worlds too?
@MagusMarquillin3 жыл бұрын
Well the Magician is an exiled star, so in a sense he comes from another "world", like an astral world - though presumably in the same Narnian universe. The there's no real evidence on the others not being natives, but Jadis could be responsible for the idea of learning arcane arts in general. Oh, and you left out Santa Claus, but I'm pretty sure he travels between worlds, cause obviously he works here. :)
@shastasilverchairsg3 жыл бұрын
It's not explicitly mentioned from the books in the case of the Green Lady. The Magician was a star as Magus Marquillin comments below; but I think the hag is just one of the evil creatures of the world and not from outside. In between the Magician's Nephew and the LWW Jadis was in the North biding her time and strength and building up her army, and hags and other evil creatures flocked to her. Though I wonder how these hags and evil creatures came into being. Were they some normal good creatures until Jadis corrupted them, or were they spawned of Jadis' hatred and black sorcery? I guess it would likely be the former as that was how the Orcs were formed from Elves in Tolkien's work, and CS Lewis would probably recycle the same idea in his own work, being a good friend of Tolkien.
@Mr.Efffff3 жыл бұрын
@@MagusMarquillin it’s been a while since I’ve read the books but I’m pretty sure the magician was on a completely different island. But maybe they were the same character and I just didn’t get it? And Santa Clause is a good addition but I’d make a distinction between magical creatures and characters who use magic. But Jadis using magic to keep him out is an interesting concept.
@Mr.Efffff3 жыл бұрын
@@shastasilverchairsg I love how that brings up the idea is magic evil? Aslan mentions the deep magic so that seems to be divine magic given the religious allegory in the series so maybe the other forms of magic are a corruption of that.

I always think she's the White Witch reincarnated. In Prince Caspian, Nikabrik, the Werewolf and the Hag suggested resurrecting the White Witch to help them overthrow Miraz and his army. Though Caspian and his followers protested against it and said the Witch was long since killed by Aslan, the Hag asked "Who's heard of a witch that's dead? You can always bring them back!". My theory's when Jadis died, her spirit took on the temporary form of a serpent and her desire was to retake Narnia and return to power. So when she killed Rilian's mother, she regained her humanoid form and her powers of mind control, dark magic and shapeshifting similar to the Master in Doctor Who and Lord Voldemort. In order to take over Narnia, Jadis hypnotised all the Earthmen as her new army whilst kidnapping Rilian and mind controlling him as her new puppet. Afterwards, when her task is finished, Jadis would murder Rilian and reign over Narnia before during the Hundred Year Winter. That's my theory.

There’s one detail from The Silver Chair that’s always stuck with me. Nobody sees the snake come out of the forest, all they hear is the Queen scream and then see the snake slithering away. It mentions that as she was dying the Queen was urgently trying to tell Rilian something but she couldn’t get the words out. I feel pretty sure that she knew the truth about the snake. What if the Lady appeared first to the Queen, and taunted her that she would abduct Rilian and rule Narnia in a matter of ten years, and only transformed and bit the Queen after she screamed?

I like to think that she is a reincarnation of Jadis. Not only cuz she was played by the same actress in the BBC special, but also because of their similarities in abilities, motivations and strategies. Plus there's that line from "Prince Caspian": "Who ever heard of a witch who truely died? You can always bring them back!" I get the feeling that before it was cancelled, the Disney chronicles series was going to say that the green mist in "Dawn Treader" managed to combine Edmunds fears of Jadis and the sea serpent into one being, who would become the Lady of the Green Kirtle. Thus, she would not only have knowledge of ancient times, but also a vendetta against the throne of Caspian.

I would love to know if she came from another world like Charn (where Jadis the White Witch was originally from) OR if she was from one of the Eastern Islands that the Dawn Treader passed through on their journey such as the Island of Mists that could warp the mind to a similar degree to the Lady of the Green Kirtle and would fit in with the theme of transformation/illusion that was prevalent in that part of the story...her age and ability to shape shift makes this less likely though....the thing that makes it difficult to gauge is that the time stream in Narnia is much faster than that of our world; the whole dimension was born and died within about 60 years of our time which for them constituted many centuries. She could for instance still be ancient by Narnian standards and still have been born after the end of the reign of the Pevensie children.

I just asked about this yesterday. This is like Christmas and my birthday! Can't wait to see the 2nd part so I can weigh in. Currently, I'd like to think that the Lady in the Green Kirtle (LGK) is Narnia's version of Jadis. Since Jadis came from another plane of existence, (Charn) there must be a version of Jadis in the OG Narnia as well and it's possibly the LGK. That means there were two of them in one plane at one time. I wonder if that's why Narnia ended so quickly and never became "developed". It makes my head hurt!

You sound like you're saying Narnia's an alternate universe, where everyone has a double and a few things have happened differently, rather then a completely other world with different races/magic/history.

I always thought she came from either an old hag or nymph and used dark magic like Jadis (or some form of sorcery) to change her appearance... though if she were born a demonic serpent (Like Tash) then that's another thing...

What I appreciate in the Silver Chair is the spiritual war is made visible, mostly by the lady. The part where it is the best visible is when Rilian sits on the silver chair and the children, Puddleglum and the lady are in that same room. The children and Puddleglum are trying hard to remember who they really are, in contrast whatever the lady says. One time the lady wins, the other time the travellers.

I think the Green Lady is Jadis, because, if you remember, in Prince Caspian they tried to reawaken the witch, and they only got halfway through when they were attacked, which may be why she took a long time to wake up again. Maybe.

It would be interesting if she was Lilith.. the first wife of Adam.. before Eve.. the Chronicles of Narnia refers to Adam and Eve.
@MagusMarquillin3 жыл бұрын
The CoN refer to Lilith too: Mr Beaver says that Jadis comes from Adam's first wife Lilith, who's a Jinn and from Giants on the other side. Funny to think Ms. Green Kirtle could be Jadis's Ancestor, when most think it goes the other way, as a deciple/daughter/"clone"/Jadis herself - assuming the Beaver's knew what they're talking about, cause I don't know why the Witch Queen's ancestry would be public knowledge.
@jackjackson37693 жыл бұрын
@@MagusMarquillin I think she is either Lilith or she is based on her. Lilith was queen of the demons and she dispised men. I would assume she was more powerful than a witch and that she would be even more powerful than Jadis. We only get a glimpse of her powers and her evil in the silver chair. However she to me is the darkest of evil in Narnia lore. It would be interesting to make a silver chair movie to follow on from the walden movie series, as it now new children in a different time in Narnia. And then even do a prequel with Tilda Swinton in the magicians nephew.. and then complete the final battle with the original children now older , to complete the series

Has anyone mentioned "Corra, Celtic Serpent Goddess"? (Look that up!) It would not only support the connection between the White Witch, the spiritism scene in Prince Caspian, and the green serpent-lady of Silver Chair, but it would also explain the giant sea serpent in Voyage of the Dawn Treader (which the newer Dawn Treader movie kind of hinted at with all that green energy/powder throughout).

So as it turns out this is basically the perfect time for Narnia to be adapted again, specifically the Silver Chair since 'WandaVision' is still fresh in everyone's minds, and then with the Lady of the Green Kirtle SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN 'WANDAVISION' we'll meet another witch who uses her magic to if not warp actual reality then at least to control peoples minds and behaviours. Except of course that in WandaVision she did so as a result of a mental breakdown out of a whole lifetime of grief and loss while the Lady's doing so is calmly planned and deliberately enacted with a specific goal for power rather than a desire for personal peace, love and happiness.

I would like to see a backstory to the white witch as she came from a world called Charn which she destroyed ironically. Perhaps the lady of the green Kirtle was from Charn too somehow, who knows? If executed correctly, Narnia and Lewis’s world could explore a lot in my opinion. However I am wondering why it’s taking Netflix so long to get this series going. Still there’s always the books which are just some of my all time favourite stories.

I love the art of the lady. It fits so well for a woman who’s beauty is on par with Helen of Troy or Aphrodite‘s. I can’t imagine the lady from the BBC version having the same kind of power to pull the prince away from car par avel.

I feel Rilian’s problem, falling victim to the manipulation of a wolf in sheep’s clothing, being the Lady of the Green Kirtle, despite the fact that she killed his mom as a snake, and kidnapped him, leaving Caspian very sad. Rilian wasn’t the only guy who fell prey to her lies, so did Eustace, Jill, and Puddleglum, almost. Aslan did warn Jill of confusion and false appearances.

Hmm, the Green Lady and Jadis did have similar objectives. However, Jadis is indeed dead in the series. According to the books she was crushed by rocks and even later characters tried resurrecting her dead spirit. The green lady could however have been a disciple of Jadis or been a being that was inherently good but twisted by Jadis.
