Are you going to one of the Sex Pistols show this month in London? Or, are you like me and wish you lived in England and were going? Do you know anything about the singer Frank Carter, whom they chose to fill in for Lydon? If you're like me and don't know anything about him, this is a fun video to watch. Who is Frank Carter and why did they pick him?
I also talk about the charity for Bush Hall and why it's so important to London history. Steve, Paul, and Glen are doing a great thing to put on these 3 shows to help save a London dance hall that has been part of Shepherd's Bush for 120 years. Let's hope they save it!

Nathan Maverick can do a great Johnny Rotten as well .He was great when he played with Wobble and Levine doing Metal Box gigs. . But I think John's voice is not right for Pistols songs anymore. As mentioned by many on here, He sings in his high-wailing PiL voice. Doesn't translate well to his Pistols songs though.

They do, but they shouldn't call it the Sex Pistols. When Walter Lure assembled an all star band for what turned out to be one last go around with the Heartbreakers material he didn't use the name, which he could have easily done, because without Johnny & Jerry it wasn't the Heartbreakers.

To be honest they are not trying to be the pistols, it's more driven by the current charitable need. If you listen to John's later reformed vocals with the pistols, it's not classic Lydon more sung with his PIL voice which doesn't work as well for classic pistols tracks. So perhaps Frank will do a good job with this & am sure it will be an enjoyable experience! 👍

Hi. My name is Eliot from NYC. I agree with you. They don't need a vocalist. Remember that the Swindle songs were handled by Steve and Paul with the exception of Ten Pole Tudor and the late Ronnie Biggs. Steve even did the vocals with The Professionals. Don't get me wrong, Frank Carter seems like a good vocalist, but John Lydon's shoes are very hard to fill. Well, if The Sex Pistols can't seem to work things out with John Lydon, I hope PiL starts adding some Sex Pistols songs to their setlist. The one thing that would make The Sex Pistols show with Frank Carter very cool is if they did some songs from Swindle like No One Is Innocent, Silly Thing, Lonely Boy, The Great Rock N Roll Swindle, and even a rare song entitled Here We Go Again! What are your thoughts?

Thanks for your comments and watching the video. I agree that Lydon's shoes are hard to fill and I also wish that PIL would add some Pistols songs to their set, but I doubt he will. I like the idea of them doing Silly Thing and No One is Innocent, but there are so many Pistols songs that I think will take priority I doubt they will. But that's a great idea because it's part of their history. One of my favorite Pistols songs not on the album is Did You No Wrong. I wonder if they'll do that one. Should be an interesting show.

Hey Maggie my friends & I have really been enjoying your channel - great videos along with your personal experiences. Loved when you visited my old home away from home CBGBs, played there many times from the 80's until the end. This Sex Pistols situation is becoming pretty polarized. I can understand all point of views, but I agree with you on Jonesy, Glen & Paul taking the vocals, man that would be cool to see. If it's absolutely impossible with Lydon, maybe pick a few guest singers from legendary Punk bands on different songs for the shows? Who knows, old Johnny might show up and surprise us all lol. Thanx again for putting together all your content - Much ❤from old school punk rockers (what's left of us) in nyc.

I like your idea of Steve, Paul and Glen doing the vocals and then having a guest singer for some songs. Someone here suggested Jimmy Pursey. That would be great. I really liked The Gallows and Frank Carter about 15 years ago. For some reason I have not followed he's music after that, maybe I should. I still enjoy those Gallows albums from time to time. I also have always liked Sex Pistols, never been a HUGE fan, but really like and apreciate them. I get what you mean that the original members could do it whitout singer, and do it by themselves, but I also think that this line-up will not be 1+1=2, I think it will be 1+1=10. The 3 Sex Pistols won't be doing much more than play their parts, but as you can see, Frank is really putting up a show, not just standing and singing. I think he's also a big fan of the Pistols, so it's guaranteed he will be enthuastic about the performances. He's a English punk singer who has a red hair, so it's a fit there also. And I think he's going to do honor to the Jonh Lydon, but not by trying to be John Lydon. And I do not know how ''hot'' these gigs would have been with people, if it was the original Sex Pistols minus 1. But it's pretty safe to think that with original 3 AND Frank Carter, it must be a huge succes. Frank has so big following by himself, and for him to front as legendary band as Sex Pistols, it's a no-brainer. Somehow this reminds me of AC/DC with Axl Rose, many were sure that it would suck and it could not be the real deal, and it wasn't, it was something even better. He acted very respectfully, did not make the shows about him, sang great and did many numbers that the band had not played for donkies years. So for fans of AC/DC and for fans of Guns' N' Roses, that was like a dream. And I think this will happen with ''Frank Pistols'' too.

Thanks for watching and for your comments. I wasn't familiar with him, but I do think he did a good job, at least from the clips I looked at. It's very hard, if not impossible, for a band to go forward with a different singer. He's no John Lydon, but he seems to honor the legacy of the band, so that's a good thing.

If they use the name Sex Pistols as a publicity stunt, who cares? In reality, I don't think it's a trick; this is a false problem. Really dirty trick is autotune. The reason is important and the Pistols know very well what it means to close a space to play and/or enjoy some music. And nowadays, many people have their streams (the albums seem to have gone to the soul basin), they don't go to shows and the concert halls are under pressure from both the music market and the real estate market. It's what The Specials sang and it still happens. And you will also have the privilege of hearing Glen Matlock's competent bass.

The Pistols did replace Johnny Rotten once in 78/79: Malcolm held this open audition ("Anyone can be a Sex Pistol") as documented in an opening scene from "The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle". The winner was Tenpole Tudor. His membership as a Pistol was brief (check out their bad cover of "rock around the clock") but he had a decent solo career in the early 80s (check out his solo hit "swords of a thousand men").

Lots of up-and-coming bands played there, especially at the smaller venue (Busbys) in the basement where I mostly worked. And now the Marquee on Wardour is "The Soho Lofts." Probably very expensive. I'd think if they did both simultaneously they wouldn't do either as well as someone only doing one, as would happen if they had the separate singer, Carter. I would say since you have three of the four and the fourth has been hand-picked by the three originals it ought to be more than a tribute band. Many bands have lost a member for whatever reason and the remaining members picked a replacement and it was still a very satisfying band, close enough to the original to please folks. Even one of the greatest bands, the Stones, have done this several times. Although if they had to replace the singer I don't know if that would work ha ha

@@gregdahlen4375 I agree. It's hard, if not impossible, to replace the singer in a band. I think they would be fine singing and playing. Glen does it in his solo shows and Steve and Paul sang in the professionals. But what do I know?! It's probably going to be a great show.

@@WhyNotGoPlaces well, I'm looking and I hadn't realized how many top bands had replaced their singer--Black Sabbath, Van Halen etc www.google.com/search?q=which+famous+bands+have+replaced+their+singer&rlz=1C1UEAD_enUS1075US1076&oq=which+famous+bands+have+replaced+their+singer&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIHCAEQIRigATIHCAIQIRigATIHCAMQIRigATIHCAQQIRigATIHCAUQIRigATIHCAYQIRifBTIHCAcQIRifBdIBCDU0NDZqMGo5qAIAsAIB&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8. So maybe Pistols can do it. Although with punk there's more emphasis on the band's personality vs musicality in comparison to other kinds of rock. And John has a lot of personality. Your opinion matters a lot as you're an intelligent person who knows a lot about the band. One thing I'm wondering is are Pistols shows short? Cuz they had a rather brief career and not that much music released, an album's worth?

I saw a few gigs at the Astoria Vivid memory of PIL in 1987 on the Happy album tour they did Holidays in the Sun ! Its great to see Paul Steve and Glen raising money for a good cause. I dont think much of Frank Carter but each to their own ! He hasnt really got a good voice . They should get Mick Jagger on Vocals that would be hilarious.!! Thanks for your videos about the Sex Pistols .They are much appreciated 😂

Thank you so much for watching and the compliments! I would have loved to have seen PIL at the Astoria in 1987. I wish they at least had kept the building but I guess that wasn't possible. I saw a lot of shows in the 90's when I worked there - like Oasis, Nirvana and many many smaller bands like The Gallon Drunk. Noel Gallagher and his girlfriend at the time used to come in often to check out the smaller, newer bands. I respected him for that. I worked in the ticket booth and often the security guards didn't know the famous rock people who walked in and would turn to me and ask "Is he/she ok ?" (to come in for free) That happened with Noel G. and Chrissie Hynde and many others. They knew that I followed rocknroll. With Noel G., I always said ""he and his whole party are good!" Anyway, I have very fond memories of the Astoria. When I was in London I met a friend for lunch who also worked there in the 90's. I think the Pistols should have tried to do it without a lead singer, but that's me.:)

Hi Maggie - been to Tuesday and Wednesday shows and they were both brilliant for different reasons - Frank is a great frontman and does a good job - cookie is absolutely killing it as usual - such a great sound - Steve and Glen very tight - little bit of a timing issue first 2 tracks on Tuesday but back in the swing - met Steve,Paul and Glen on Sunday when they were rehearsing and they were gracious enough to sign and pose for pics - frank on Monday so had 4 days in the Bush !! The vids on here from the gigs just don’t do it justice- the staff and owner at the venue are wonderful as well - such a great experience all around and thank you for your vids - really enjoying the content

How wonderful! I'm so happy for you. I think it's beautiful that they can play the songs again. Cookie IS killing it! That's the first thing I thought when I saw some clips from Tuesday. He's brilliant and sounds fantastic as ever.. And I thought Glen and Steve sounded great too. As I said in this video, I don't think they need a front man, but Carter did a good job. Only thing I didn't like, on Tuesday anyway, was that he kept putting the mic to the crowd to sing along. That was distracting. But I wish I was there! Did you see they added a date on Sept. 26 in Kentish Town. I sure wish I still lived in England!
