Konnichiwa and thanks again for watching SUMO PRIME TIME. The next grand tournament begins exactly a month away from today and I know everyone can't wait and neither can I. But we will keep you posted by bringing intriguing contents and this one is no exception. This time, we asked 10 rikishi to test the strength of their hand grip by using a dynamometer. This was originally distributed in December, 2020 by the Japanese language KZbin team which means the contestants include a couple of great former Yokozuna: Hakuho and Kakuryu! Were they able to show that they don’t take a backseat to anyone in this unique contest too? Find out who has the strongest grip in sumo by watching this fun show. Oh, by the way, thank you for sending me comments about the previous show which was about revealing the secrets of rikishi's topknot. Tell you the truth, I didn't know they actually shaved the top of the head in order to keep the topknot in neat shape. I guess you learn something new every day. Anyway, we hope you enjoy this video and again, please send us your comments and suggestions because we always love hearing from you. Arigato!!

Grippers like this are very dependant on hand size, so shorter guys with smaller hands will struggle whereas taller guys with bigger hands will do well. While I expected Teruhofuji to be near the top but (he's quite tall and also lifts a lot of weights in training) I was a little surprised that Shodai did even better.

It makes no difference. If I squeeze with my right hand and the top of the gripper is in my left hand - it serves no purpose other than to allow me to see what I am doing. Even if I was pushing with my left hand down it does nothing. To be effective or to cheat you'd need both hands on the handle which for us with bigger hands is not possible.
