The author gave birth to her second(?) child while writing the manga so she definitely knows how it feels to be a parent. The parental relationships were important to her, like izumi with her stillborn child and then the elrics. Hohenheim is just an awkward parent that thinks his sons hate him and doesn’t really know how to show affection toward them

Hohenheim loves his kids, but the guilt of everything weighs heavier than his love. He wants to reach out to love them, but can't blame them for Ed's hatred and Al's ignorance towards him. Ed feels he abandoned Trisha, and Al barely remembers him being there.

I would say keeping his distance was his misguided attempt at doing what he thought was best for his sons. Not that the guilt was stronger, but that was his way of loving them. He thought a life without the monster would be better.

@@GOTGames It's one of those poorly explained parts of the anime that rankles me when I see it. It's pretty much there to show Miles' constantly suspicious nature of everyone but a lot of people just think it means that Grumman is dirty (which while potentially possible, knowing who his grand daughter is, makes this less likely). Probably one of my biggest problems with the anime.

“[Grumann] is being a prick.” That is not what is happening. Miles is wondering if Grumman is going to betray them and is withholding judgement until later. That’s it. It’s what Miles thinks Grumman might be thinking. It’s just presented in an odd way, in reverse and it goes on for a while. You are not the first to be confused by it. I’ve seen many reactors confused by it.

My argument in regards to Hohenheim would actually be that he does have more love for Ed and Al than he does for his wife, it just maybe doesn't always come across that way since hes afraid of how he'll effect them, being what he is. Even when he was living with them he was afraid to even make physical contact since he views himself as a monster. Just that recently his kids are still alive and his wife has passed on, so hes lamenting not being able to pass on before her like they'd promised, which is not to say that he simply wanted to die as soon as possible, just that he want to make it possible for him to pass on, and was hoping he'd do so before his wife. And while I do understand your take on how you feel towards your children, I would also remind you that everyone is different, and having those kinds of feelings towards your kid is not an absolute by any means. Some people have complete love for their partner but dont give a singe shit about their kids, and even some who care about their kids dont care about them as much as they care about their partner, and some have equal love for both, and theres even the shitheads who dont care about either. Everyone has unique circumstances and mentalities, theres really no definitive way that everyone should feel towards their family or lover or kids. But I do think that feeling the way you do is probably the most natural Anyway, theres a lot of intricacies to life

Hohenheim's love is precisely what fueled him to leave his family. He didn't want to watch his kids grow old and die while he remained immortal so he sought a way to lose his immortality so he could live an average human life with his family and not have to watch all his loved ones die.

@@zamtriostamer923 Oh sorry I mean in a way stopping Father was also out of love for his children too. I feel like the flashback episode was insinuating that he might have let Father's plans go through, because humanity didn't quite learn from their mistakes, but Trisha and their boys changed his views and gave him hope to move forward. I am not saying Hohenheim didn't care about what Father was doing beforehand, just that he was jaded. But his love for his family prompted him to move forward to protect them and others.

Although I'm not a parent yet, in regards to Hoenheim's feelings I think it's more like he doesn't know how to show it. Or rather he is telling them he loves them with his actions. I mean it sounds strange but he has been travelling around trying to stop Father's plan since the boys were little in order to protect them. If he didn't care he could have just fucked off to Xing. I think he'd like to show Ed how much he loves him but it seems obvious he isn't open to that just yet.

Also, one of the first things he did after revealing the truth to Ed was offer to let him use his Philosopher's Stone to get their bodies back. It's not quite the same because of the sheer amount of souls he has, but it's similar to offering to give your kid a transplant. Plus, it's clearly not something he wants to do since he values the lives of those souls just like Ed and Al.

I'm not trying to argue, but "That's not how it works"? C'mon, maybe not in an ideal world, but then why are there people who even abandon their children? There are different type of parents and that's the truth, so I don't think there is anything strange to see a man who lived hundreds of years alone, with all those not exactly normal life experiences, being different from the "normal".

The Manga and the Original dub of the anime explains it better. Hoemhein left Trisha with the kids so he could do two things: Make sure he could stop the Father in the capital because he knew he would do something similar to what happened to Xerxes, and to find a way to grow old and die. It's not that he left because he just wanted to grow old with Trisha, he didn't want to see his own kids die while he kept on living. Imagine you, being an immortal being, knowing you will watch your kids marry, grow old and die but you will stay stuck in time, forever cursed on seeing those you love dying? I believe that if he knew Trisha would grow sick he would stay with her, but she was fine when they were together, so he figured out he would be able to come back in ten years and see his family again. I believe when he came back at first and saw his house burned, he came back with the intention of warning Trisha and Pinako to move to another country, beause he knew he wouldn't be able to ensure their safety. Again, I don't think he left just because he wanted to grow old with her, I believe he left because he wanted to both protect his family and the country and also find a way to give away his immortallity somewhere down the line. More than that, like I said, I also think he wants to grow old and die before his children do, because no parent wants to die after theri children. Finally: He cries there because he wasn't able to protect Trisha, in a way he failed her and his sons because of him seeing himself as a monster. He feels guilty for not protecting her and healing her from decease knowing he could have saved her. I do think the original material explain this better and the japanese dub with eng subtitles also does a better job. For some reason the english adaptation made it feels like Hoenheim only did that for Trisha and not for his family as a whole.

I genuinely think it's not a case of "he's lacking in fatherly love" but more so that he has social issues preventing him from easily showing his feelings. Stemming largely from his past trauma and current fears of where things are going, and his search for redemption. What we eventually find out (no spoilers) is kind of like the bow finally wrapping up his character package. He loves his boys more than he shows, but he's distant, emotionally crippled, and possibly even scared. It's part of why him crying in that family photo was such a drop to me, and why that extra bit I'm not spoiling is so important to understanding him as a character.

I think Hohenheim isn't able to behaive like a normal dad, because of his history. He blames himself for EVERYTHING because he's the reason Father exists and has taken all the lives of the people of Xerxes. Imagine you think you'r responsible for the deaths of so many people. Most people with a normal concience would feel guilt or in his case even think of themselves as monsters. We don't view "monsters" as worthy of happiness or living a normal life. We usually think they deserve jailtime or even death. Hohenheim literally thinks he doesn't deserve the happiness of being loved by his children. He is not even comfortable touching them, because then they are being touched by an immortal mass murderer.

I don't think it's Hohenheim loving Trisha more than their kids is why he acts like that. He's known Trisha far longer and so he probably knows how to show his love for her. He loves his kids but as was shown, it doesn't seem like he knows how to show it. He said so before that they didn't grow up with him around and he didn't even know if they still think of him as their dad (he was surprised Al would still call him "Dad", too). He might not know how to act like a proper dad, I guess. He's still trying to stop Father's plans to make sure everyone he cares about (his kids and the Rockbells) would be safe. Short ver: He loves both his wife and kids. He knows how to show his love for his wife as he's been a husband longer and doesn't know how to properly show it to his kids as he hasn't had to do parent stuff for a long time. And ah... the subs really help out in understanding what's going on but that last line. The subs spoiled that it's Lan Fan before Ling got to say it lol.

I respect and appreciate your take on being a parent, but I don't think it's a universal truth of every parent. I'm not a parent myself, but I know with certainty there are plenty of parents out there that don't have that kind of undying and all encompassing love for their children. You feel the way you do because who you are as a person, not because it was something granted to you automatically by becoming a parent. If it was, there would be no bad parents. (Or much less anyway.) That being said, I do believe Hoenheim loves his kids, and is doing what he's doing for their sake, but he doesn't have the same emotional connection to them as he did his wife, so he has a hard time actually expressing it. Which is made all the harder by the fact that Ed openly expresses disdain for him. Also, the writer of FMA is a mother btw. I don't know if this was brought up in the past, but that scene several episodes ago where Ed gets impaled by a metal beam was her attempt to make Ed experience what it was like to go through child birth. Being a mother, as well as the culturual difference of being Japanese, may play into that disconnect you feel about Hoenheim, but I don't think he's a particularly unrealistic portrayal of a parent.

I personally feel you are being slightly unfair to hoennheim's feeling. I can't see him having ed and al as a "side love" his love for them and desire to give them a chance to grow up is what spurred him into action against father. He is currently grieving Trisha because he knows that tomorrow is they day he could have been his chance to be reunited with her. He doesnt have to grieve ed and al, they are alive they are growing and he is going to go through woth his plan to make sure they get to continue. So i feel he is justified in lamenting that missed chance with trisha.

They say the greatest tragedy is when a parent outlive their children. . So it's not like he doesn't care for his boys. He said it himself. He was happy in his home with his wife and watching his kids grow up. But his fear grew stronger with each day. His wife and kids get older and older and he remains the same. He has to detach himself to hold back his tears. Which was what he did when he left home all those years ago.

Hohenheim has a lot of potential power, but that's all he has combat-wise. He's brilliant, but he's not a fighter. If you remember everything he did up until now, not once did he get into combat; the closest being the fight with Pride under Liore, and he lost that fight utterly. If he's a car, he's basically a nuclear-powered research vehicle, can produce crazy amounts of power but would never win races anytime soon.

The odd feeling you have on anime fathers having move love for their partners than their children is actually a Japanese cultural thing. In Japan, it is (or at least was) very common for fathers to work insane hours and tend to have little to no interaction with their kids, the kids being raised almost entirely by their mothers. This is why anime in general (and older anime in particular) tend for absentee fathers who have no real connection or even love for their children.

It’s clear that he’s cunning enough to plan that, but it’s still a bit unclear if he would actually use the others for his own benefit. I don’t doubt that Grumman had formulated that strategy, in a “I can do that if want to” sense, and it’s also reasonable that someone like Miles would not be completely trusting of Grumman. This show is so well directed that I doubt that the ambiguity is unintentional.

I can't say so much than "watch again the scene between Ed and Hohenheim. It's important." That part when Edo gives Trisha's message to his dad is sad bc Hohenheim feels he failed her and their family. Here you see a broken relationship between Edo and his father. Contrary to Al, Ed never called Hohenheim "dad"... In my opinion, they have a deep comunication problem they need to resolve. They're not showing their true feelings. I think with Hohenheim there’s a lot to his love for Trisha. The man didn’t have a partner for hundreds of years and she finally got through to him. She must’ve been incredibly special to him. And when it comes to his kids, there’s a big amount of guilt and fear in his relationship with them. And even generally, the love normal parents have for their kids is just about instant. Once they exist, every mentally healthy parent is just filled with love for them. Nothing can take it it away. But love for a romantic partner takes more work and intention in my opinion. It’s a different kind of love where you have to mutually be vulnerable and so much more. It’s work, but a work that’s worth it. Romantic love and parental love are both very different. Personally I don’t think they can truly be compared. Ideally, a child will eventually distance themselves more from a parent and live their own lives. Not permanently mind you. But a romantic partner is supposed to be with you until death. That’s a whole different level of commitment and camaraderie.

I think it's hard to judge how people choose to show their "love" for the people in their lives. I've seen parents who don't exhibit anything similar to what I (as a non-parent) would call love for their kids or even spouses. I've seen people who express love as a twisted form of 'ownership' rather than tenderness and care. If people can claim to "love" their kids despite mistreating them, than I think it proves love and how people express it exist on a spectrum. With varying degrees of people who 'think' they love people more than they actually do and vice-versa, as well as just again different ways of operating in-general. I have no clue if the creator of the manga/story is or was a parent at the time of creating FMA, but I think I wouldn't be surprised either way.

Been watching since episode one Been enjoying these videos Been watching until the end. FMAB is one of my favorite anime of all time, so seeing you react to it is a must, and it has been a hell of a series to watch. Every time you enjoy a part or figure something out, it gives me a sense that I have watched it for the first time - for the 2nd time! Hope you enjoy these last episodes, because the series isn't ranked as high as it is for no good reason.

While it's nice to hear that your love for your kids is that strong, the unfortunate truth is that some parents (and fathers more often) do not have that kind of natural affection for their children. I can attest to that as the child of such a parent.

I don't know man, as someone who lost their mother to cancer, I can definitely confirm that the father does tend to really dwell on the passing of the spouse. So much so sometimes that suicide is what they prefer. He knew I was fine on my own and he knew my sister was fine on her own. Granted we never expected it and I've spent a lot of time with him after mom's passing but it just wasn't enough.

My input on the parent/spouse topic. After years of being with someone those intense feelings can weaken and/or need stimulation to be reignited, but with your children it is an uncontrollable feeling of love. The thing about Ho and Trisha is the level of commitment. After years loving your spouse is no longer a feeling, but a decision. Love, at its most practical level, is a decision. Being madly in love with your spouse is simply making the same decision time again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again x10. This kind of love requires work, accountability, truth, forgiveness, change, attentiveness, self-denial, and deciding to do it as many times as it takes to keep the bond strong: hence, till death do us apart. The problem with most people's understanding of love is for them its a feeling; strong or otherwise, they think it is a feeling. Love is a decision. Ho and Trisha's love is beautiful for this reason.

So are you saying as a father, you wouldn't do what Hohenheim is? Cause i think you are misunderstanding his goals. We saw in the recap ep that he figured out Fathers plan. He knows what Father is doing. Being a philosopher stone Hohenheim is fine but Trish, Ed and Al? How would they survive Fathers plan? When he left he didnt know if Ed and Al would learn alchemy. They were helpless children. He loves his boys which is why he left to do what hes doing. Also Hohenheim is immortal (to an extent) not a psychic, how was he suppose to know Trish would fall sick and his boys would try to bring her back? And obviously hes emotionally stunted, he grew up a slave, befriended a wierd creature in a flask that his blood was used to create, became an apprentice, then his whole country became the sacrifice for the weird creature to walk! Of course hes no good with feelings

Exactly. Let's just ignore that Hohenheim is the survivor of the genocide of his people. Let's forget he is 400+ years old and has thousands of anguished souls inside himself. The man grew up as a slave, without anyone to show him how to care for a family. He only learned how to build bonds, *late adolescence.* His experience, based on that alone, was completely different than what modern life is like in Amestris because he is literally a relic of a forgotten age.

Hohenheim does love Ed and Al but we have to take into consideration that he is immortal and doesn't want to connect with people as much as he would like too because he knows in the end he will be the only one left in the end and that pain would be quite unimaginable

My take on Hohenheim's love for his kids vs Trisha. He still has absolute parental love, prepared to offer himself this episode for them to use to get their bodies back. But With Trisha it doesn't seem to just be love like a wife, Hohenheim has lived for centuries with what seems like hatred for himself, not seeing himself as human and being alone, until Trisha, the amount of love and gratitude for the person that made life worth living on top of the husbandly love on top of her being the only one that is dead is what probably what gives the appearance of Him loving Trisha more than the boys.

I think a mistake you're making is assuming your experience as a parent is everyone's experience as a parent. Don't get me wrong, I love my children. I would sacrifice myself in an instant to protect them. However, I could never choose them over my partner. She is the person I chose to spend my life with. She is the person I plan on dying with. She has been with me for such a long part of my life that picturing my life without her is nearly impossible. If I had to choose between her and my kids, she tops out every time. She is irreplaceable to me. Our kids are an extension of our love for each other. They are an expression of the bond that we share. The bond I share with my kids will always pale in comparison. I genuinely hope that when they get older and fall in love, they will feel the same way concerning their partners and children. We work very hard to show our kids the best example of a completely healthy, supportive, loving relationship, because we want them to express romantic love positively when they feel it. That's very important to us. Falling in love with my partner literally saved my life and pulled me out of a situation that would have killed me eventually. My kids can never recreate that level of importance, even if they come close. And about the "spending more time with the partner than the kids argument": I think that's a more minor note, but I do also see that. I've known my partner a huge chunk of my life. I've only known my kids a couple years, and they're still so young they really don't even have much in terms of personality and awareness. The bond is there, but I know that I will feel closer to them as they grow and I can actually bond with them as their minds develop. My partner provides an enrichment to my life that they can never duplicate. That doesn't make them less important, but they aren't my life mate.

Everyone loves differently. Your experience with loving your partner just that little bit less than your kids is not uncommon. But likewise, many people love their spouse first and foremost. It's not "incorrect". It's just different experiences and personalities and values. It seems a little hypocritical to always be defending your own point of view but then judging that people with a different one must not know how love works. Just saying.

I don't think Hoenheim has "side love" for his kids. I think his guilt for abandoning them is getting in the way of him expressing his love for them, especially around Ed who clearly hasn't forgiven him. Trisha understood and accepted him leaving so he doesn't have that same sort of guilt when it comes to her.

I know that there is gonna be tons of comments cincerning the author going through pregenacy during FMA's serialization and also giving birth while also not even taking any medical leave for said pregnacy. But one thing I might add is that while she did not take any breaks for herself, she has taken leave from work for her family and only for them and not for herself. Her son and husband became ill and required intensive care and nursing, which the author Arakawa Hiromu, nursed them back to health without a second thought of her own well being and work. So, yes, her love towards her spouse and offspring are well known in the industry.

There is no universal way of feeling for your wife/husband/children. Especially if things get complicated. Hohenheim loves his children, but he has no idea how to deal with them, since 1. he didn't spend much time with them and 2. since he left them alone and feels guilty about it. So his mind goes to Trisha, since he knows her way better and has a better connection to how she would react and how he would go about things with her. And we just see him from a mostly outside way, we don't see how he feels inside, just how he acts and sometimes memorys.

I watched this anime before and after having a child and it hits differently. All I can add to the argument is that I think the love for a child is a different kind of love. I love my Husband totally, but in a different way. I think that Hohenheim struggles as he loves them, but he doesn't really know them, they've grown into their own people since he last saw them. Grief also does things to people, he's lost his person.

11:00 You will soon realize that Hohenheim loves his children more than anyone, more than his wife. P.S. I love that in this chapter Ed is the only one who can't fight in the dark, I mean, everyone is doing their own thing and Ed is just standing there, not knowing what's going on and praying that Mr. Gorilla doesn't hit him anymore 😂

Hoenheim loves his kids... he distanced himself from them because of his insecurities and guilt. Not feeling like he deserved them... people are a constant process not a static thing. He also had the terrible duty of not being blissfully ignorant of what was coming like everyone else. When he left he was the only one who knew what was going on AND the only one who could do something. Put yourself in his shoes.

Family and love will always look weird on anime and Japanese stories, bc for them, love and family is more a status that you need to get instead of something you get for your own will. If you are not married at a certain age and with one kid, you are a loser, and you lose connections with people and even job opportunities, most adult couples don't love each other and their kids are just tools that makes them look good to society. The amount of kids and even adults that I've talked with terrible emotional stress and problems are ridiculous and all comes from that.
