It’s a damn shame that there aren’t more KZbinrs (or just creators in general) who speak Chinese and English fluently and can share Chinese culture with the world. Instead all we see on socials is rampant misinformation and unbridled racism. Keep doing what you’re doing because it’s an invaluable service!

In the 90's there was much more cross cultural interaction! I remember seeing many English speakers learning Mandarin. Unfortunately the current geopolitical climate does not foster Mandarin-English cross language interactions. The great firewall doesn't help either

@@xmeng137the govt needs to realize that whatever control they’re giving up by getting rid of the wall, they’re gaining back 100 fold in soft power and influence. Every time some random Chinese meme finds its way over to the English speaking world it’s always a massive hit. It’s like what happened to JP vs KR entertainment in the 2010s: one more advanced but highly insular, the other laser focused on international expansion. We see the results today. If you flood the market with cultural content, people will come.

To newcomers to Avenue X’s content: welcome! She’s amazing. Her knowledge of Chinese literature and art is capacious. A few years ago, she did some amazing videos explaining the poetic context behind certain lines from Word of Honor (a Chinese tv show, or cdrama), and she frequently drops that type of knowledge in her casual chats about ongoing shows. I need to get a console so I can play this game!!

I play on PS5 for both games and Ghost of Tsushima has BY FAR greater graphics/textures/framerate, but that should be expected for a AAA PlayStation exclusive game made by one of the most accomplished video game developers and has been out for a while. For me when I play BMW the framerate lags or drops occasionally even in performance mode and the textures come in like a second late during cutscenes especially when the camera is focused on something or zooming in. That being said both games are just phenomenal and as someone of Korean descent I am jealous of the Chinese and Japanese haha.

Thank you for the video, great to finally see a Chinese person explain the story with Chinese context. Just a few things to add, as a fellow Chinese person who wants to show love to the other characters who got less attention: 1) Sha Seng (Sandy) was not just a labourer, although that was his role most of the time. He does participate in some fights. When the party came across huge armies, Sandy would help fight off the demon minions. Because Sun Wukong was bad at fighting underwater, Sandy and Pigsy were in charge of the aquatic battles, although their role was usually the lure the demon above ground where Wukong would finish off the demon. 2) Bai Long Ma whilst remaining a steed for the most part, actually does fight in 1 occasion when Tang Seng banished Wukong from the party. He was also the one who had the foresight to tell Pigsy to go to Huaguo Mountain to fetch Wukong back to rescue their master (so he actually does speak).

If there are any players who haven't been exposed to *Journey to the West* and are starting to play *Black Myth: Wukong*, I'd like to offer you some insights. *Journey to the West* wasn't just written suddenly; it’s a story that has evolved over hundreds, even thousands of years, blending real historical events, folklore, and religious elements from China. Throughout its long history, the story and its characters have taken on many forms (for instance, the earliest versions of the Great Sage the Equal of Heaven and Sun Wukong were not the same character, and the Yuan Dynasty's version of the story included a lot of NSFW contents). Even after the most famous novel version, *Journey to the West*, was written, people continued to reinterpret, rewrite, and draw inspiration from it. The story in *Black Myth: Wukong* is yet another reinterpretation, with a distinct personal style. Some elements may not align with the original spirit of *Journey to the West*. While I don’t oppose such adaptations and creations, it’s important to understand the differences between each work. I hope more people come to love *Black Myth: Wukong*, and I also hope that some will take this opportunity to appreciate the charm of the original *Journey to the West*. In the foreseeable future, this story is sure to continue inspiring more great works.

Fun fact: In the game, Yellowbrow has 4 disciples with names mirroring Tan Sanzang's 4 disciples. Non-Void for Wukong whose name means "Awakened to emptiness". Non-Able for Zhu Baije whose Buddhist name is Zhu Wuneng which means "Pig Awakened to ability". Non-Pure for Sha Wujing whose name means "Sand Awakened to purity". Non-White for Bai Long Ma (the horse that Sanzang rode on) whose name means White Dragon Horse.

I'm lost with that one. Who is yellowbrow, he seems like a center in the game's story. I think i didn't read that part. I'm only on chapter 3. there are four "non-.." but I never got what was the point of this. If you could shed some light on this I will greatly appreciate it. Also, bottishava or something like that. what's the deal with him
@SimonMoreal
@SimonMoreal 4 ай бұрын
@@juanmd26121 Yellow Brows was an antagonist from the novel. He was a servant boy under Maitreya Buddha (the little boy at the start of the chapter). When his master was away, he stole some powerful relics and ran away to earth. He built up a fake Leiyin temple and impersonated the Buddha to fool the OG gang and captured them. Subsequently, he tried to replace them with himself and his followers on the pilgrimage for the scriptures in order to become a buddha himself. This of course didn't come through and he was taken back by Maitreya himself. The game built up on this baseline and it seems he's back on his bullshit again; this time even spewing some anti-buddhism teachings.

And also regarding the little animations that happen at the end of each chapter too, because they're quite interesting and I'd like to know more about them. Also, perhaps some interesting lines in the game? I have watched the gameplay in english, but I fear that the translations are not as good as I'd hoped, and of course there will be some lines that just cannot be translated because that's just how language works. In Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty II To The West, I've noticed there's at least a couple of references to Journey to the West such as a rake and a guy who looks like Zhu Ba Jie. Great translation! I love it! When the master was choosing his name, he removed the "animal" side of the character according to the 1592 edition, that symbiotically means what he want to teach him is to be human. As for the two characters, why Sun was chosen was well explained. Thank you for making this video.

i just learned about the game yesterday, but since i cant play it yet, and since i am not familiar with the story, i was so excited to see that you had already made videos explaining the lore! as always its great to see how you tell things in a way that is easy to understand. i also really appreciate that you add the terms on the screen in three different ways, which is something so useful for people wanting to learn mandarin (((:

YES I was waiting for your video now that the game is out and I'm stuck on Yellow Loong. I immediately recognized a few of the dialogues as actual lines from a few different real texts. Love the attention to detail.

Thank you and I hope to see more of the lore. Even if I say JTTW was my childhood, I have to be honest I was only got hooked with the fighting and was too young to understand the more complex aspect of the journey. Again, thank you!
