Thanks for explaining why Sun Wukong sounds like that. I thought it was obvious but apparently people who play the game are so pressed about him sounding high pitched and whiney even though I wouldn't expect any other voice to come out of a literal monkey. I mean have they never heard how real monkeys sound? They whine and whimper, screech and chitter. Not only that but clearly it is that this is how he sounds traditionally as well, to be able to convey the animal/monkey nature. Sun Wukong is a rambunctious, energetic, trickster kind of character. If he had a deep booming voice, that would just be incredibly weird and inappropriate.

The sad thing is some of these people don't even realise that they are being authoritarian and intolerant of diversity. It's one thing to have questions about how and why East Asians put up with things that we in the West couldn't stand, it's another to be judgmental and insist that because we can't stand it personally therefore no one can, and East Asians are backward for persisting with a different culture. Given that Buddhism looms large in this tale, AND the fact that Buddhists believe in reincarnations where you can end up being a different gender, it's silly to bring gender study into this game. There are just as many male "villains" as female "villains", and villainy also depends on whose perspective you identify with - eg I find some of those who are supposed to represent righteousness actually are the most intolerant and cruel, I would never accept their self-righteousness.

I am here to learn! For a lot of westerners, Black Myth is their first real exposure to the Journey to the West story. And yah, as both a mythology nerd and a feminist, I’m doing my best to just ignore the drama. The drama has nothing to do with the actual game or the stories it is based on. We are dealing with Chinese myths and legends here. Gamers have played around in fantasy versions of Ancient Greece, Scandinavia, Poland, Japan, England, France, ETC. Now Chinese mythology is getting the spotlight, and personally, I’m excited! Thank you AvenueX for explaining the context for where these tales come from and how they fit into the broader culture. For a westerner who didn’t grow up with these stories, this is valuable information. Thank you again AvenueX I can’t wait for the next upload

The story is woefully bad, just admit it. For anyone not familiar with the entire story of Journey to the West like myself and MANY MILLIONS of people who also played the game, it's an utter mess and as she described in the video, not at all coherant with far too many references to instances, characters and events that are never explained or otherwise explored; it just assumes you would know. That is NOT a good adaptation of a story or part of a story. The game was good, but the story was the weakest part. 90% of it makes absolutely no sense to anyone not in the know and serves in absolutely no way to enlighten a person or educate them on the original tale, thus leaving them completely lost and confused.

Excellent job. Even though I'm a native speaker, there were much you introduced that were news to me. I too don't play games, but I'd watched so much others playing it online I've become somewhat familiar. This game is WAY more incredible and in depth than any casual Western players can ever imagine. There are tons reference to the source materials, but also literature outside the book (i.e. Su Dongpo's calligraphies), poems, songs, and paintings. Actual existing art objects used as model for many magic items. Temples and locations you can actually visited. To be honest, I would've missed 90% of them but for the avalanche of online analyses by fans, spotting "Easter Eggs" (aka Cai Dang) here and audial clues there (especially the last animation). It's truly amazing how deep the water is. Unfortunately, virtually ALL except the surface game story are closed to non-native speakers. Not only do you have to understand the language, you have to be familiar with the novel, the characters, and the background Chinese mytho/history to even get what the Chinese youtubers are talking about. Of these videos, my favorite are the deep dives into JTTW conspiracy theories, not just the same ones that had been going on among Chinese geekdom the 400 years, but this time with a lot MORE added into the stew from the game. (Almost feels CANON after only 2 weeks! To a 400 year old novel) Was Wukong actually never all that powerful? That he and his friends/enemies were just pawns in a game of charade, a secret and scary war between the Buddhists (Lingshan) a foreign religion, the Taoists (aka the Celestial Court) the home religion, and even the human realm (Confucians). Who really was Wukong's Immortal master Puti Zushi anyway? Why did he completely disappear in the novel ...or was he?. Who was the old man Yuan in the game, clearly the same fortune teller who'd tricked the Dragon King in the novel and set the whole journey in motion? How did the many "happy accidents" happen to Wukong while he was in Heaven, almost as if they were planned? Why the hell would the most powerful being in the universe, the Jade Emperor, crawled under a table when Wukong attacked, much less called for the Amitabha Buddha (another big schemer) for help? And within the new game (minor spoiler depending on where you are), why did the Maitreya Buddha show up (or rather he was a home-grown/not-from-India bodhisattvas, the future Buddha)?? I don't think the game is reaching. Wu Cheng'en (the author) had a mistrust of not just the government, but also religion (hence Black Wind and Yellow Brow). I mean Tripitaka (Tang Zeng) was literally a mole for the Lingshan; I mean, he was the reincarnation of Jinchanzi, a disciple of the Buddha. Wukong, his brothers, Erlangshen, various Celestial soldiers, and all the monsters were just playthings and blood sacrifices for the gods, Buddhas, and Immortals.... as to why... well, we can go on forever but let's not. Anyway, I think your channel is in position to bring up some of these backgrounds to English speaking audience as you progress in the game or your video endeavors.

This melon-eating child is actually a manifestation of Maitreya Buddha, who, in *Journey to the West*, is the master of YellowBrow and once teamed up with Sun Wukong to capture YellowBrow using watermelon as a trap. Fun fact: Mithra (*mitras* in the original Indo-Iranian nominative form, modern Persian: میثره) is an ancient Indo-Iranian deity. This god was originally a common object of worship in the Aryan pantheon. The origin of Christmas can be traced back to the celebration of Mithra's birth (Winter Solstice) during the Roman Empire when Zoroastrianism was practiced. This later evolved into the celebration of Jesus' birth with the advent of Christianity. Interestingly, the name of this deity evolved into *Maitreya* in India, which is indeed the same *Maitreya* as in Maitreya Buddha! This shows a fascinating connection between Eastern and Western cultures.

I think one issue new players might find with the storytelling in Black Myth is that it inherits some storytelling traits of modern games it takes inspiration from like Dark Souls and other action RPGs. Black Myth already gives you a more straightforward narrative and tells you things, but it still has elements you have to "pluck out" from the game by reading item descriptions and investigating the environment. In the case of the Dark Souls, and in general games made by Fromsoftware, you barely get any exposition about the world. Instead, you have to piece things together from interactions with NPCs and item descriptions.
@BadEnd984 ай бұрын
Yeah, they don't reinvent the wheel like Elden Ring for Souls-like or Baldur's Gate 3 for RPG... but REALLY solid on things they do, linear and not too long game but there are enough exploration and the sense of progression once you get something from bosses, it not overloaded with too many stuffs and sometimes unrewarding after too much struggle like Elden Ring. It's like entrance into souls-like genre with comparable boss difficulty but less frustrating and more streamlined in other aspects, with a narrative easier to follow, there's depth to skills and combo system too but it's essentially really accessible once you get the hang of it, the satisfying moments in combat when you bring bosses down their knee with your combos, and variety of challenging bosses is incredible for their first game. What they did best are the graphics, the art direction and the movie animation - it's cinematic and epic like God of War, but in completely different taste of culture and mythology
