The online kerfuffle basically boils down to this: Does Guanyu Zhou deserve a F1 seat in a vacuum purely based on talent? I think most people would say yes. He's looked really good on many occasions. Does he deserve it over Giovinazzi? I think still a lot of people would agree. As much as I like Gio he's nothing special and hasn't really improved that much with plenty of time. But does he also deserve it over the likes of Piastri, Ilott, De Vries, Schwartzman and other similar young drivers that can't get a seat? I don't think many people would say yes to this.

A lot of people don't seem to understand that Alpine wasn't going to drop Piastri from their academy so he can drive for AR and AR wasn't going to take Piastri for a year and endure the growing pains of the rookie driver so Alpine could snag him back in 2023. I've been making that Zhou/Latifi comparison as well so I wouldn't say he doesn't belong. He had a decent FP1 session this year. As for Piastri, Alpine would be completely foolish if they don't give him a seat in 2023. The problem (a good problem) is that I think Piastri overshot his expected growth curb and caught Alpine off guard. I feel like they were aiming for Piastri to be in F2 for 2 years and didn't really expect him to win it as a rookie.

I always knew about Zhou in F2 since he joined but it was near the end of 2020 where I started to support him, while he isn't a Piastri or Russell, he's more of a Latifi than a Mazepin when seeing him as a pay driver. I'm staying with the same opinion as Latifi, I will not judge him until half of his first season is up, which was Latifi's whole season. Because while Zhou won't win championships, he might be a good reliable driver with a stable backing.

Sauber (or Alfa) have their own talent - Theo Pourchaire. And I bet that they will bring him into F1 for 2023, currently, it is too early for F1, Pourchaire can do another year in F2 without any problems. And if they have a seat to fill, why should they get Piastri? They would develop a driver for a different program. So they went for Zhou, who at least brings money. So basically, grabbing some money until Pourchaire can get the seat. When it comes to Piastri or Alpine in general - the Renault Sports Academy was always a dead end... It is probably the worst academy when it comes to chances in F1.

Reaching Formula 1 has never been based on merit alone (save a few exceptions). As much as we like to romanticize the idea of underdogs with no financial backing to reach the pinnacle of motor racing, we have to admit that a big part of being a formula 1 driver is also having the ingenuity to get sponsors and investors. It's always been an elitist sport and always will be, people shouldn't be surprised that another pay driver joined the grid. Of all the kinds of pay drivers, Zhou seems to be at least a competent driver. Let's wait and see how he fares in 2022 against Bottas.

Awesome stuff as always Josh! Maybe a silly question but, I know that drivers always need to accrue a certain amount of points to gain their super license, but do they need to do anything to keep it? Like people at the back of the grid wouldn't be earning points, due to the cars being wank etc. But if they're crashing or spinning out, or even getting in the way of the front runners in races/quali, what ensures that they keep their license?
@Saphfire05
@Saphfire05 2 жыл бұрын
In order to keep their superlicense, they need to keep racing. This came up in 2020 when drivers were getting covid and weren't able to race. Hulkenburg was chosen over some others because he had raced recently. Esteban Gutierrez was the first pick, but since he had just been a reserve/development driver for the past 3 years. He lost his superlicense and wasn't eligible

Piastri can't be angry, the guy will have a full season of learning and adapting to the f1 car and the atmosphere of an f1 team with a long term proyect with a world Championship constructor which looks promising rather than wasting his time at the back of the grid. And he will have fucking Fernando Alonso as his mentor the amount of thinks he can learn from him money cant but them, I dont think he could ask for more.

@nickfury8973

I think people don’t understand that Piastri is a Renault youth driver who has a future with the team. If that stands, his only route to F1 is through Renault, either Renault sends him to a team through an engine partnership (like Mercedes did with Russell to Williams and Ferrari with Mick to Haas), or he becomes the one to replace either Alonso or Ocon. In contract, Zhou is and will be a pay driver. A pay driver who is young and has talent will have a market and a seat in the midfield or backfield teams. For a team like Romeo that needs additional resources, Zhou does that perfectly. Additionally, he can help sell cars in China if he does a decent job on the grid. These two are two different types of drivers who both will have a career F1. There is no competition between the two. Piastri may have a higher ceiling to be a champion caliber driver for Renault. Yet Zhou can have a long and comfortable career in the midfield.

No offence but I dont get why everyone is saying his second his second half is great. It's kinda shit, he got into q3 a couple times and still at the back. An alphatauri is sometimes always at the top of the midfield and tsunoda is never there. His performances have not been impressive and if he does the same thing next year he is 100 percent out.

Has he though? He is getting pretty similar positions from start to finish. He had a rise in form mid season, but towards the end he has dropped back again, regularly finishing outside the points where his team mate is almost consistantly finishing in the points. Tsunoda to me has been incredibly unipressive all year. He has had his moments here and there, but compared to his team mate, he just looks terrible. Yes, Gasly is experienced, but Tsunoda is making the car look like it belongs at the back of the grid. The car is much better than Tsunoda is showing. It's a shame as I have always been a big supporter of Japanese drivers and wanted him to show all those idiots making fun of his height eat their words. Zhou has one huge benefit over Tsunoda and that's that he is going into a team where expectations are not exactly high. Only thing he has to do is perform close or better than his vastly experienced team mate (and better than Haas), where as Tsundoda has to perform close to or better than all the mid grid teams. It depends on what version of Bottas we see next year though. As for Tsunoda, he can get a chance to truly improve next year as the cars are hitting a massive reset button and will be alien to nearly everyone.

The only reason why Mazepin is higher than Zhou in 2020 is because his car broke down at last few laps in Austria Sprint Race 1 when he was in lead. Zhou's true performance got dragged down by mechanical issues in the last two seasons which he would got lots more points. Zhou should be at least 4th in 2020 season if his car doesn't have mechanical issues.
