But as unpopular as this opinion may be (such takes always are for some when it comes to giving credit to recent installments), I think in terms of brutality and overall sinister vibe, the latest GHOSTFACE is definitely up there. Amber & Richie perhaps don’t compare to Billy & Stu in terms of characterization (actually, I feel Amber rivals Stu), but they definitely defined the term psycho - especially Amber. What I love the most about Billy and Stu is something I don't see talked about all that much, but I just love how close these two were to each other before the reveal. All of the other killer pairings feel so disconnected from one another personally, at the very least before their reveal where the two killers hardly have any on screen interaction or hardly any indication that they're friends at all. In the original it's so believable that these two are just close friends who decide to go on a killing spree to fuel their own psychotic pleasure, while the other killer pairs just felt like the writers just said "Uh, you and you are gonna be the killers! Sure, why not."

There was zero indication of the two having even the slightest bit of friendship/relationship before their reveal, not to dissimilar to other ghostface duos like Mickey and Mrs Loomis, or Jill and Charlie. I’ll give them credit for after their reveal, since they seem like the only ghostface duo that was mostly loyal to one another, but that’s my point. That’s only after the reveal. Amber could’ve easily been switched out for someone else like Liv, and nothing would’ve changed.

I love the dynamic between Billy and Stu, Billy has a plan (which we later learn is retconned to be Romans plan) and Stu is literally only going along for the ride. I don't think Stu really would have sought out revenge for being dumped, it was suggested and he liked the idea so went with it. It's like later on in the finale act when Sydney gets the jump on the pair. Billy is acting out desperately because he's seeing his plan fall apart, a plan that has true meaning to him, whereas Stu acts out desperately because he's finally scared that this plan of his best friends isn't going to work and like he says "My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me!"

I absolutely agree. Stu was too busy party-planning, Billy was likely putting the finishing touches on his plan. And while they are attention-seekers, all of their murders display very careful planning. If they were going to scare Sidney again before killing her and her Dad, they'd have tried to isolate her in a private area. I don’t know if anyone else caught this, I didn’t catch it until I had watched Scream with subtitles, but as Randy and Stu run up to the house trying to convince Syd that they’re not the killer, you can catch Stu sayin that Randy had “Killed Billy, he killed my Tatumn.” Stu shouldn’t know about Billy being “dead” because it’s not mentioned beforehand (Randy doesn’t mention anything about Billy and if Billy truly was helping Stu with everything then he wouldn’t have been upstairs for Randy to accidentally stumble across.) Finally, someone points out the logical reasoning behind Billy being Casey's killer. I've been saying the same thing for years, and yet all I hear back is, "Casey recognised her killer, so it had to be Stu." No shit she recognised him. Billy was Stu's best friend. Of course she knew who he was. More importantly, she'd be more surprised that it was Billy rather than Stu, given Stu's motive to hate her. These same people always ignore the subtle nuances of the choking and the way the killer holds the knife. Wes Craven highlighted these things in the movie for a specific reason. It wasn't by accident.

Once the script is sold, the writer has very little influence on what actually happens with the filming and editing process, unless a creative deal is struck where they are to be heavily involved (e.g. J.K. Rowling). The director uses the script as a guide, but it’s really up to them what direction they take the movie in. If they want to change the ending or have a different interpretation of a character, there’s really not a lot the writer can do about it.

I think overall some of the kills were a ploy by Billy to distract the police from looking at just Sidney's murder, so it wouldn't be as obvious that she was the main target. Also by killing Casey, Billy puts more suspicion on Stu. Billy would also probably play the part of the distressed lover, after Sidney would have been killed, making him seem more innocent. It's also interesting to point out that Billy comes to Sidney right after he strangles and murders Casey, possibly signifying that the act gave him some sort of sexual pleasure. This is also supported by the fact that Maureen Prescott was raped before she was killed. In my eyes Billy probably raped her and Stu just helped kill her but I'm not certain. Billy also seduces Sidney right before they enact their final plan to kill her, so ,to me, there's a connection. This movie has a lot of great subtexts and layers that can be interpreted in different ways based on real profiles of serial killers. It's really fascinating.

I'm a bit conflicted over this interpretation. Yes, killing Casey would, if put between Billy or Stu, Stu would obviously have more motive, so I'd agree that Billy's trying to cover his bases. However the idea that Billy gets some sort of sexual gratification from killing isn't evident. I always assumed Billy visited Sidney prior to the murder of Casey, so that he and Stu could steal her father's phone. Billy kills other girls and does not rape them or masturbate. Plus, earlier in the movie the police stated that Sidney's mom was having an affair with Cotton (can't quite remember the name), and they'd had sex the night she was killed but that Cotton was drunk, and he may in fact have raped her. It's possible that Billy or Stu raped her, but I think a court might have just ruled that with how mangled her body was along with seminal fluids/signs of sexual acts, that Cotton raped and killed her. I don't personally believe either of the boys raped her. I think that him badgering Sidney about sex all the time is that he was disgusted with how her mother's promiscuity 'ruined' his life, and he wants her to become the same way to at least a small degree so he can justify the murder even more. Not to mention the whole 'don't have sex in a horror film' monologue that Randy gave, paired with Billy and Stu's motto of 'life's a movie, you just don't get to pick your genre... I don't know. I'm not apologizing for anything that Billy or Stu did, but this was how I understood events. I could be wrong ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You can tell Stu called Sid while Billy was in jail because he’s being a little more comical and goofy than Billy, who is more dark. Also Billy hits Stu in the nuts at the party when he shows up for payback, because Tatum hit him in the nuts with a beer bottle. So you know it was him. I feel like scream 1 might have the hardest “who killed who plot” cuz like it’s very understandable if Stu was the one who killed Casey and Steve cuz he was angry he got dumped. The way Casey died, to me that looks 97% billy. The fact he stabbed her in the shoulder, crushed larynx and then stabbed her to death. Billy was the darker character and by far the more vicious and vengeful of the 2. Look at how berserk he went on Stu for stabbing him in the wrong spot. Stu had to plead with Billy to stop it already.

Stu did and it’s evident by that. You completely read people incorrectly.

This breakdown is amazing. And seeing the move serval times I never noticed the small nuances in the way each killer held the knife. It made sense to have Stu be more clumsy and goofy because of his personality and have Billy be more calculated and cold. Also I never noticed Stu checking the mirror for bruises, I just thought it was a goofy thing he was doing. There was only 1 killer and that was Billy. He told Casey there are 2 main doors to the house (which was the front door and the patio door), one of which she was next to. That was the patio where Steve got killed. Billy was outside the patio door because he threw a chair through the patio doors' large windows before she could guess, so she ran down the hallway to the kitchen and right before she snuck out through the kitchen's side door that Billy didn't know about, she sees him down the hallway running across the rooms. If Stu was there he would be at the main door waiting and she would've been cornered, but he wasn't there cause he was at Tatum's house and she confirmed this to Randy.

My theory is the first attack on Sidney was to kill her but Billy and Stu realized they had lost control of the situation, and with the police showing up they pulled the bait and switch tactic out of necessity at the last minute to throw everyone off. However, Sidney was then put under supervision which is why they then killed the principal. The party was used to lure Sidney out but the principal's death I think was used for keeping the police busy more than deterring the other party guests. Bc at that point in the story Tatum seemed to be the only other intentional kill since she would've stayed behind with Sid no matter what. Dewey, Gale, Kenny, and Randy all jus happened to be the remaining few coincidentally.

Finally someone got that the bathroom scene was just a prank! Everytime I see a Scream video try to say that was Billy or Stu, it immediately brings down the quality of their timeline for me. They basically spell it out that it was prankster because Principal Hembry is seen raging at two students, one of whom was the one who ran in the hall and the other of whom scared Sidney in the bathroom. Can't help but wonder what Billy and Stu thought of that. I feel like they'd either be pleased that Sidney is being made to feel more unsafe, even by stuff that's not of their doing, or angry that they didn't think of it.

Because like you said, Billy has a more suave and menacing voice whereas Stu's voice retains that excited glee. Stu killed everyone except Himbry. Stu likes to take his time, torture his victims before killing them. Billy wants to get the job done asap. When they reveal themselves to Sidney the way Stu says “Watch a few movies, take a few notes... it was fuuuun” shows his obsession for hunting down people. While Billy exacted revenge, Stu was actually the knife happy killer that’s why he always took his time and let the victims have a moment of reprieve before killing them. 1. Stu kills Casey & Steve (Casey dumped him for Steve). Billy was on the phone throughout - his impatience on the phone and lust for horror movies is proof. 2. Billy kills Himbry while Stu provides distraction. We can see Stu hurrying away after inviting the ladies. Billy got the job done asap without any bs. 3. Stu kills Tatum - Like mentioned above he played around before killing her. He also falls over a lot (a scene where he asks Tatum to get more beer he pretty much falls over the couch). His grunts in the garage are similar to those when he’s chasing Sidney after faking Billy’s death. Most importantly - he sneaks back into the house while Billy shows up later and looks completely fresh (he probably showered after hanging Himbry) Stu kills Kenny as we all know and he attacks Dewey as well as he loves to clean his knife after stabbing (which he does when he pulls out the knife from Dewey as he did for when he pretended to kill Billy). There's no reason they'd have a random voice actor say Stu's line or that they'd loop in Matthew Lillard's take in a previous scene (Rose hitting him with the lollipop seemed ad lib and his "Easy" would be, too.) It's just twisting random grunting sounds and trying to bend them to sound like words.

I’ve never seen anyone point this out but I love the fact that the motive Billy & Stu came up with for Sidney’s father while planning to frame him for the murders is straight out of an 80s slasher lol. Very similar to Roy’s motive from Friday the 13th Part 5 for example. It emphasizes the point that they both were heavily desensitized to violence and movie/media obsessed and drew inspiration from the many horror films they’ve seen. “What if your father snapped your mothers anniversary set him off and he went on a murder spree killing everyone”

This is what happened. Caseys chase was so chaotic that it was a matter of who got to her first. Stu got knocked out by the phone so Billy had to go get her. Stabbing and strangling is Billys MO so Billy stabbed, strangled, and wounded Casey. He could've finished her off but he didn't because she was meant for Stu. After wounding her Billy brought her to Stu where Stu finished her off by gutting (his MO) her. So yes Stu did kill Casey but not in a way that we all thought he did. As for recognizong the killer. She was shocked that it was a classmate and her ex's bestfriend. By then she figured out there were two killers so she knew Stu was involved. Another detail. When Billy decided to strangle her, he was strangling her till she passes out where he can bring her to Stu so he can kill her. When she was being dragged she you can see she mainly got stabbed on the sides. Meaning that Billy wounded her, brought her to Stu, and Stu delivered the fatal blow.

I agree with all of these except that I think that Tatum’s killer was definitely Stu. When she goes into the garage, the door is locked behind her from inside the house. The only way it could have been Billy is if he was already hiding in the garage. We don’t get a good view of the layout, but from what we do see, it’s pretty small; there doesn’t seem to be anywhere Billy could have hid without being obvious. But what really seals the deal for me that it was Stu is that, after Tatum is killed by the garage door, ghostface exits back through the house. First, it wouldn’t make sense for Billy to do this. He’s not supposed to be at the party yet. Second, it means the door’s unlocked now, so either Stu was waiting behind the door to unlock it for Billy to let him in the house for some reason even though he shows up at the front door the next scene, or Stu unlocked it so he could go in to kill Tatum. It makes more sense that: Stu hid his costume in a room near the garage, slipped it on real quick, killed her, went back into the house, took off the costume, and went back to the party. All in all, he would only be gone for a few minutes, which is plenty of time to have no one notice he was missing. The knowing look between Stu and Billy could mean anything, it’s not necessarily Billy confirming that Tatum’s dead. It could just be Billy checking in with Stu that everything’s still on track with their plan. Not to mention, the overall clumsiness and sadistic playfulness of ghostface in that scene really feels more like Stu. Anyway, thanks for attending my most self indulgent TED talk

Tatum's ghostface had a headtilt, was clumsy and played around with his victim. Billy doesnt do that... hes a one and done type of guy. It was Stu, case closed. If it were Billy then Tatum would have been killed immediately like the prinicipal was

6:54 I have always noticed ghostface saying “easy, easy” as he was chasing Sidney up the stairs. I always thought it was the stunt actor playing ghostface and was added in by accident. Like how in scream 2 when Cici was thrown off the balcony you can see a crew member’s head pop up behind the balcony in the lower right corner of the screen. (they removed it on the new Blu-ray release but if you have the dvd from way back you’ll spot it). Never noticed that Stu said it in school though! Pretty good attention to detail there.

Also notice that Billy's mask is different than Stu's during the first two times he's seen as Ghostface. There's a real world reason for this, as they hadn't secured the rights to the Funworld outfit when those two scenes were filmed, but it's interesting to note that the two times you see a clearly different Ghostface mask are both Billy. The mask that Billy chases Casey with is clearly different than the one Stu has inside the house, and Stu is never seen with a mask like that, meaning it could technically serve as an early hint that there are two Ghostfaces.

I also think Billy did all the calls considering his character is a big homage to both Black Christmas and Halloween. Makes obscene calls like the Billy in Black Christmas, shows a fixation with strangling victims before stabbing them to death like Myers in Halloween.

It's funny. After watching each movie in the series the first time, on subsequent viewings, my family (mainly one of my sisters) and I would try to figure out who killed/attacked who. If my memory serves me correctly, we did settle on basically what you described in this video. We did think Stu may have been the one in the bathroom because there's no real sense of time, but thinking back, it is most likely to be a prankster for the same reasons you mentioned.

I feel like Sidney was meant to be killed by Stu that night when she was waiting for Tatum. It was like , billy killed Casey for Stus revenge on Casey and Stu was going to kill Sidney for billy, but when Sidney escaped , they had to make it the house party being the night they kill Sidney. But then again , that’s just my opinion :)

I always assumed Stu was meant to kill both Steve and Casey himself with Billy merely directing traffic as a sort of "reward" for Stu helping him kill Sidney's mom a year prior. When Casey began to put up a big fight and nearly escaped, Billy had to intervene and stop her himself. He likely gave the final touches to Stu since Casey was still barely alive while being dragged away. Stu being more impulsive probably would have killed Sidney in the first attack if she didn't stop his downward stab.

I thi k Billy was the mastermind and needed full control. Especially for the first murder in the spree. This one had to give them full control and Billy seemed like the one who would have that motive. So I think he would of wanted some of the action. But contradicting myself he might of felt full control getting stu to do everything.

Nope, Billy killed Maureen Prescot, Steve, Casey, the Principal, and Tatum. Stu killed Kenny, and stabbed Dewey. Tatum said Stu was with her that night. His alibi is legit because in the video store, Randy said to Stu that Billy is the only suspect in the senseless bloodbath (Steve & Casey's murders) and he believes Billy is the killer. Clearly Billy is the mastermind, the one in charge, and the more vicious and vengeful of the 2.

I appreciate this movie so much more. People say it’s “cheesy” or “corny” but even if you didn’t know the intricate details such as the ones stated in this video, it is still an amazing ICONIC film. I always thought Stu killed Tatum as well, how was Billy able to get into the house without being seen by anyone or when he went back into the house after? All of Stu's guests were drunk and partying, I think he would have been able to slip away for 10 or so minutes to kill her, no one noticed Tatum missing the rest of the party except for Sydney. Also how would Billy know that Tatum would go into the garage alone without anyone else at that exact moment? I also thought the look Billy gives Stu when he arrives was signaling that he had killed Mr.Himbry and had him at the football field, Stu had to get ready for the party and Billy had a lot more time on his hands to put him there himself. It wasn't too long later the call came informing everyone about Himbry and I think that Stu called from the kitchen using the voice changer and Randy was too drunk enough to ask any questions about who was on the phone and also he did answer someone else's house phone. Also and I just realized this but it's pretty messed up that during this whole party with all those people there including a cop (Dewey) that Sydney's dad was there tied up and gagged the whole time!!!!

Fun Fact: Lilliard and Ulrich dawned the costume in front of the camera once and it was the same scene. The scene where ghostface is behind Randy and then gets distracted. They both filmed it, but Craven went with the Skeet take. Confirmed by Skeet and Mathew at really multiple conventions.

I always thought Stu killed Tatum, because she hits the killer in the gut with the beer bottle, and Stu almost acted like his ribs hurt, more than just playing when Billy hit him lightly. Now that you bring up that he is hosting the party at the same time I can see it being Billy.

It doesn't make sense with the timeline. It was Stu's house. Everyone would have seen him gone. I also could assume he was entertaining the guests so noone would walk into the garage. Billy wasn't expected, so it would make sense for him to do it.

This analysis is great and I mostly agree. The simplest way to explain it is that Billy and Stu girlfriend swap when it comes to the murders. That's why Billy kills Casey first to show Stu how it's done and when Stu's turn comes around (taking care of Sydney), he botches it. I think they were definitely trying to kill her in that first attack but Stu wasn't as confident as Billy.
