A Covington family wants answers after eight months of grieving. They told FOX 5 they want to know who shot and killed their brother, Navy Veteran Khali Marks in Clayton County last October. They say the 22-year-old veteran's murder was overshadowed by an officer-involved shooting of the likely suspect, and the killing of a police dog.

I loved him. He was absolutely a great person. He told me he was lonely and I didn’t believe him, he told me he loved me I didn’t believe him, he told me if he went back to Atlanta he was gonna die and I didn’t believe him. I reserved all my feelings for him because I didn’t trust him enough to bare my naked soul to him. He meant the world to me. It hurts so much he died thinking I don’t care about him. He always told me he missed me or loves me but I never said it back and he always got annoyed by it, but I thought he’d understand since I spent most my time with him, the way I touched him, the way I told him I’m not usually an affectionate person I only was to him, that he’d know how much I cared about him. But I guess he didn’t trust that I was down for him the same way I couldn’t believe he could love me. I remember when after weeks of being at sea he would call me as soon as the ship was docking to let me know he’s getting off the ship and I’m the first person he wanted to see. I couldn’t give him nothing so I know he didn’t come around for what I have he just simply liked being around me, i held him, I touched his face, I brushed his brows with my thumb until he fell asleep on chest. I LOVED him. But he just had this thing where he’d just disappear for weeks on me, and that alone made it difficult for me to trust his loyalty, so I gave up on commitment to him. I set him free in the hopes he’d come back to me, and like a bird with an open cage, no matter how long he was gone for he came back to me everytime. That’s until my son was born in December 2021, he called me wanting to see me while i was on my way to la, I broke the news to him about my newborn son, he was not happy, and he hung up the phone before I could tell him I missed him too and wanted to see him. I never heard from him again because my number got changed because I couldn’t pay the bill and I was going through a world of stress being a new parent and tumultuous relationship with my “partner”. I’m not sure how I forgot to check in on him, I was too sober to leave me family as I hadn’t drank or smoked since my son was born. That led me away from my former life and former friendships in San Diego. I never let khali go, I was away knowing that we’ll reunite but I had no idea how much time was passing, he was ever present in my mind, I have a whole drawing of him I did, and I’ve been hiding and protecting all year long since I moved in with my partner. We just had the type relationship where we’d go for long periods without seeing each other and it only made us want each other more, as every moment we reunited, it felt like the first time we met. I didn’t find out he passed until three days ago when I went googling his name to find his social media, because I have him blocked on everything, in an effort to hide him, as he was my secret. Do you know how devastated I was to see the things that popped up on google? I was already going through so much, was stuck in my car without gas, only to be reading that the man I was ready to go back to San Diego to find has been dead for 8 months. I cannot stop crying, I’ve never lost someone special to me, I’ve never had to deal with grief. I never knew I’d become one of those people messaging someone that’s passed on hoping they would reply. Now all I do I re-read over our messages where I say “I miss you”, and he says “I miss you too” I don’t know what kind of life he was living or what was going on, he just never opened up. I never thought I’d fall in love with someone like him, but I loved him at first sight. Our moments were short, but filled with peace love and affection. Never once did we yell at each other. I don’t care who or what he was to anyone else, I’m confident I met the best, truest and purest version of him, at the end of the day I would hope I did bring him peace, that I did make him feel loved. My life is forever scarred by his passing, I probably won’t ever get closure and I will have to deal with the possibility he died thinking I didn’t care about him because I left him. And I’m sure he tried to find me, but I betrayed him and abandoned him and will never get the chance to explain to him. Wherever you are Khali, I hope you can feel in my soul how much I miss you and how sorry and hurt I am. Maybe I should’ve held u down and let you move in with me as you had asked so many times, but my stupid pride wouldn’t let me give you the benefit of the doubt. Until I join you in heaven someday, keep flying high my beautiful dove 🕊️

The shooting was not over the dog. The police were in the process of investigating why he was in that vehicle, or if there were drugs. It appears he tried to flee when the dog was sent in, he shot the dog, then police shot him. Unfortunately, that leaves no answers, if he knew something about Khali's car that information died with him.
