Who needs a starter motor to start your engine? I can be a starter motor!

Monthly Hot VWs Transporter Talk column contributor Lind Bjornsen showed us one of the earliest VW Buses surviving today and how to start the Porsche 356 engine with a hand crank starting handle. The hand crank was a standard feature for early models of Beetle and Bus and was a great backup when the battery was not working.

There's always people on the Internet telling you that you're doing it wrong. I'm not going to say you're "wrong", but I'd like to offer you some advice on how to improve your technique if I may? I'm a prewar restoration engineer and handcranking is a daily thing for me. Every engine is different but there are a few things you can do and develop your own technique from. Firstly, Mark up your bottom pulley with some ignition timing marks using a paint pen. Then, engage the crank and turn your engine around and just feel the whole range of movement that one crank can give you and keep an eye on where you are in relation to TDC/BDC on your crank pulley. Once you've figured out the relationship between the swing of the crank, the engagement of your starting handle and position of your crank pulley then, what you need to do is find the optimal position before TDC that allows the best sweep of the crank handle. If you have accelerator pumps or ticklers, operate them or use your choke. If you have a decomp valve and ignition advance retard mechanism, now is the time to adjust this to get the optimal setting for starting. When you put your "driving hand" on the crank, keep your thumb on the same side as your fingers. Now, pull UP. This way, if the crankhandle kicks back in the lower portion of the stroke, it will simply pull out of your fingers and thumb. If it kicks or pulls forward without disengaging the drive dogs, it will pull out of your hand relatively harmlessly. You can also go from a bent over to almost standing position whilst cranking so as to apply more pressure to the handle and not rely as heavily on your arm alone. I hope that this comes across to you in the helpful way that I intend it to. It is in no way intended as any sort of criticism, I purely want to share the knowledge that I've gained by working on older vehicles. Enjoy your lovely old Volksie 🤙

My VW had a faulty starter motor, and I did it this way: Make sure to park the car at a flat or downward inclining surface. Put the gear in neutral and turn on the ignition. Make sure there is free space in front of the car. Open the door and start to manually push the VW forward. As soon as you get it moving a few steps, jump into the car and quickly push the clutch to the bottom, and at the same time quickly engage second gear. Release the clutch quickly a brief moment, and at the same time give it a little throttle. Immediately push the clutch to the bottom again, and the engine is running. This worked every time, but timing of every step is crucial to make it work.

I like the old pull start accessory. I think it was a bit safer and more efficient. Got to love old reliable tech (or lack there of). Old cars can get going with just a little effort. Modern junk takes gear, parts, knowledge, gadgets, equipment, and even then it probably won't get back on the road after years of being neglected.

Basically anything after 80-81 with the exception of larger trucks requires knowledge of computers.
@bmoturtleco
@bmoturtleco Жыл бұрын
@@RogerSegerJr and that's the problem. Shade tree mechanics could diagnose what was wrong by a sound or smell. Nowadays you need a certificate and tons of hardware to say a sparkplug is bad. Plus all this added technology hasn't really improved cars. Infact it's made the average commuter car worse. The so called emissions control crap actually makes cars run less efficient and prevents people from making their cars better. An old non computerized car will far out live any modern plastic computerized car.

@@bmoturtleco I think you are simping waaaaaaayyyyyyyy to hard for vintage tech. If vintage tech was so good it would still be around today. Its not. Its antiqued. Do you use vintage tech in your day to day life?
@bmoturtleco
@bmoturtleco Жыл бұрын
@@sebastianriz4703 just because something is new doesn't mean it's better. Older cars hold up way better than newer P.O.S. 's. Modern cars are a throw away commodity. That's what happens when you cram them full of electronics. Also older cars were better built, safer, and more efficient than modern crap. But due to government regulations and people's need for newer shinier things society keeps replacing things. Cars from pre-90's will still be around long after a car from today is scraped.
@sebastianriz4703
@sebastianriz4703 Жыл бұрын
@@bmoturtleco I still disagree. Besides the part that modern cars are made to be disposible. They are made that way because thats what people want them to be. Humans always need the new. They dont want to be stuck with the same vehicle they got 20 years ago. So why bother making a car that lasts the ages when no one wants them too? Those cars were not safer by the way. One of the 2 big reasons why fatal car crashes dropped so dramatically since the 70's was because they started changing how cars were made. I guarentee my 2019 Ford Fiesta is a more safe car to be in than a 70's Ford truck. Thirdly. Modern cars CAN last a lifetime. It depends on the owner to maintain and care for the car. It has nothing to do with the car itself. Your preception on modern cars is just as biased as your view on old ones. I respect your opinion but it seems rather unhealthy to me. Vintage cars are cool and I would love to collect, but modern cars exist for very good reason.

It was not an option, you used your spare tire crank through the front frame T - slot. It helps to loosen up the spark plugs first because that old 235 had a lot of torque. Thankfully it starts like a singer sewing machine.

My dad had a 58 Renault Dauphine that was 6V and he had to crank start it in winter because the starter didn’t have enough power to crank it. He hated cranking it in rain and snow, and when the crank snapped back it nearly broke his arm. He traded it in on a Rambler the next spring.

In 1971 I had a neighbor with a '66 Beetle. It was a cold winter. His car battery would not buy spin the motor. I had worked on my dads VWs for years. I did not have my jumpers at home, that day. I got a piece of rope from the shed, wrapped it around the crank pulley a couple three turns and pull started it like a lawnmower.

I had four Renault 10 cars, all with the same crank handle set up for starting without the starter motor....you just used the crank handle for the scissor jack, and connected to a lug on the crank shaft pulley, through a hole in the body......French answer to the Beetle....simple, reliable and easy to work on. Yes, be careful with kick back, I always kept my thumb on the outside of the crank handle, in case.
