I was born and raised in the suburbs. Seems perfect to me. The country is too closed off, while the city is too loud and annoying. Works for my simpler way of life. Thanks for the post, Mr. Hoffman! I hope your rehabilitation is going well.

I remember my grandfather talking about this. It was called the American Dream to own a house with a green grass yard and a white picket fence. I know that grass lawns were not for everyone, not everyone could afford the upkeep of a grass lawn. Many poorer people had dirt yards (dirt poor) and only the upper class had green lawns, until the middle class became affordable after WW2. Then the grass lawns were part of the suburban package.

On the street where I lived at age nine, every house was the same but down the hill they weren't. It was a suburb and to me, it was Utopia with kids my age to play with and woods to explore. I'm sure my dad got it using the GI bill but a month ago I was shocked to see it for sale for $150,000. The driveway still isn't paved. Couldn't believe it.

Hi guys! 🖑Some wouldn't but I consider myself very fortunate looking back, my dad gave me a 3 acre lot/land when I turned 21yrs old, so I bought my 1st home in 1992, it was a mobile home/trailer, but it was nice & new 16' x 80' paid 23,000, 2300. down payment and 230. Mortgage on it a month for years, wth it was good enough for me & my young fam, the way I saw it at that time was at least I'm able to raise my kids in my hometown, but my gosh I'd be lucky to buy a small shed for that price nowadays!!✌

The CT beach community i grew up in was in the suburbs of nyc, where most of the fathers commuted to work. It was safe to be outside, to play in the streets, and the beach was five houses away. There were kids with boats, jet skis, windsurfers and paddle boards. We had block parties and a neighborhood fourth of july parade with a huge bbq in a corner lot. That area has since been built up, and many McMassions have replaced the small ranches and capes. There is always traffic congestion and what once was a sleepy area is now an extension of nyc. We left our parent's houses and kept moving up the line further into CT. We arrived in an old 1950's suburban area. Things here have not changed much. There is a population of 15,000 and its been that way since the 50's. Taxes have not increased in 20 years and its a peaceful area we love. I have to admit, we miss the beach but I'll drive the hour it takes to visit. We do have plenty of lakes and forested areas, and a top notch local farm. The only thing about the suburbs that is a pain is having to keep up a lawn. I prefer wildflowers, but i cant get anything to grow. 😮💨
