Irish Travellers aren’t gypsies. But there are Romany gypsies in Britain who have been there for over 500 years. The Welsh Romany dialect was compiled into a dictionary in the early 1900s by John Samson. He determined that 60% of the vocabulary was derived from Sanskrit, the ancient language of India. They also borrowed vocabulary from Persian, Greek, English and Welsh. The language is no longer spoken as it was a century ago, just as many Welsh people no longer speak Welsh, and they just speak English. But the Welsh are still Welsh even if they only speak English. There are many young Native Americans who don’t speak the language of their ancestors either. That doesn’t mean they aren’t Native American now. The Welsh gypsies were never a large population like Roma from the Balkans, so there has been intermarriage with non-Gypsies. If they hadn’t done that, they’d all end up marrying their close relatives. They’re quite an inbred population as it is.

I live on land next door to every member of my family (cousins, 2nd cousins, uncles and aunts, grandparents etc) in the stereotypical mobile house/bungalow and live like a traveller/gypsy. I kind of find it irritating when people say that because I ain't Indian looking or know the language in full that I ain't a gypsy. It's in my DNA. Im a gypsy whether they like it or not 🤣 Ik the phrases etc such as "dawty" & "mush" and I have an accent of a typical gypsy but I dont look like one part from my long hair. Plus I sing, play Guitarra Flamenka (Gitano on my mother's side as she is Sinti from Andalusia), piano, percussion (drums, Cajon, timbales.....) I would say I'm fairly light-skinned but definitely can tell I ain't white. I'll say what the fuck I am by blood and won't let no man tell me what I can call my own blood. If anybody has a problem with that they can catch these half Mexican half Gypsy hands. Trust me you don't want that. My guess is people will keep their mouths shut to my face. Just because someone has been separated from the language and culture doesn't mean they are no longer of that ethnicity. I don't speak Romanes, up to about 20 years ago few people did in my family. It's only been with the influx of Eastern European Roma that it's made a resurgence, at least in Germany. It was a matter of survival, just speaking or responding to it could get you shot. My Grandfather forbade his children from speaking anything but German. Even if we had, I wouldn't have learned it, as I was forcibly taken away and raised as a social orphan, forced to learn only German culture and language. It was so strict we were not even allowed to speak or learn the local German / Bavarian dialect.

I have "Gitano" in me. Gitano is Spanish for gypsy. Papa Ney came from Spain. My great Tata. And he married my great grandmother in Sinaloa, Mexico. He fled the Civil war in Spain. Although took the wrong ship. He was supposed to head out to Argentina. Lol! But never said or allowed his kids to say that he was or they were part Gitanos. In mexican culture they have a very bad rep for thieves. My papa Ney wore his black fedora and played he's flamenco guitar for us and gave us a mango. And he would speak romani when he got angry or sad. Eventually he said he was more mexican then romani because he had lost all contact with his friends and family. I show picture of papa Ney when I tell his story. It's very unique to most. He was the most interesting person in his village. He had hardships and faced discrimination by some. Makes me sad. But was loved and appreciated by most. Can't wait to see him one day again

Two years ago, when the Roma (Gypsy) Taxi driver in Bucharest to my amazement almost understood my conversation with my wife in the native tongue of Rajasthan, a north western state in India, I decided to spend time on this and find out how. According to records, Roma left north west India around 1050. From no other part of India did Roma leave. They were the tired soldiers of the army of great Rajput King Prithviraj Chauhan who fought 17 wars with Mohammed Ghauri. Most Roma belong to fine Rajput warrior caste and others were farmers called Jat who also were in the army. While the great king was keen on continuing battles, many soldiers did not want to fight more wars and stayed at home. For a Rajput staying at home during war was a stigma. Even women folk taunted them for staying home at the time of battles. Therefore, they left their native land in groups. Some went west and are called Gypsies or Roma now and some went down to south India where they still are in their red and yellow colour clothes and huge moustache. You can see them on KZbin by clicking "Lambada in south India". I was further shocked again when our Gypsy (Lambada) maid understood a Hungarian Roma lady talking in Romani on BBC program on TV while I read the English captions. Apparently the two ladies 9000 miles away spoke similar tongues. On the way to west, Roma took words from Persian like bibi and many other tongues including Greek (drost for road) and Armenian. Also, few joined them on the way from Sindh, another Indian province. They are still called Sinti within Roma and words like laklo, lakli, chavo are from Sindhi. They somehow lost their last names of fine Rajput warrior clans. Roma may try to find surnames like Sisodia, Chauhan, Shekhawat, Nainavat Rathore, etc. But they kept first Indian names until 19th century like Bihari and his daughter Panna Cinkova of Romania, both great musicians. You may look for " Roma Musician Panna". Today Roma use many of the words from Rajasthani, Hindi and of Sanskrit origin. Few are ek do trin yak nak bal angusth bersh diwas sassu sussro saalo Sali chora chori cior(chor) gia sov kammes thalle upral purano maal dukh, kasht, tato, langhal(lame) maang, des, lajja and so on. I know hundreds. There are thousands. Sometimes grammar has changed. Like we would say sov gia and Roma would say gia sov. Same meaning though. Has slept. Romani words are from pre-Muslim era in India and hence pure Sanskrit like hiv for snow or ice is used. Please go to the following in KZbin to see more. “Romani an Indo Aryan Language” by Adriano, an Italian Roma and “Roma girl from Kosovo finds her roots in India” All Roma had moustache which was necessary for Rajput warriors. Purity codes of Roma were till recently practiced in India like a lady not entering the kitchen during few days of the month and Roma breaking the plate if animal licks it. My mother used to give the plates to beggars if our dog ever licked it even once. That is why death rate within Roma during great European plague was so low as claimed by scholars. Roma had also carried our proverbs like "while choosing a daughter in law, believe your ears more than eyes” meaning reputation of the girl's family was more important than her beauty. Would native Europeans choose a daughter in law? Another proverb is "If the road is crooked, you can't walk straight." Roma eventually lost their religion, quite understandably but Sara kali of southern France is Rajput deity of Goddess kali. The deity is immersed in water body every year like we do in India. The Vatican has not recognised this deity as it has no link to Christianity. Please see "Dr. Ian Hancock: Keynote Address at Romani Studies Conference, UC Berkeley" who makes very scholastic analysis of Romani history. He gives authentic details of entire history and how Europeans first found in 18th century that Romani was an Indo Aryan language when some European students went to India. Many Roma have come to Delhi and Jaipur to get their DNA tested and were doubly assured of their Rajasthan roots. Also, one may see on KZbin " Kalbelia Dance" of Rajasthan which is same as Flamingo dance of the Roma. Even the dress of the dancers are same. As a student in the US during seventies, I saw some slightly brown students speaking language somewhat familiar to me. They said they were new Roma migrants to the US from Spain but I did not know about Roma at that time. I have received many mails stating Roma were Doms and untouchables from India and so on. This may not be so. First, there are no Doms in Rajasthan. Second, Roma who came to south have mostly Rajput surnames and very few Bhil (a jungle tribe, but soldiers too) surnames. Third, down trodden and timid would not venture leaving home to travel thousands of miles and fourth, Doms are very dark even for Indian standards while Roma are not. There should be no doubt that Roma are our lost pral and Pena (We would say pra and behna) Hats off to them to keep the language and culture alive even after 50 generations while humanity in the entire world now melts away in two generations. I am in contact with many European Roma from whom I gather some new facts time to time. I have gathered the above information till now from history of Rajasthan. Shriprakash Loya shree709@gmail.com

It's kinda sad that even within the Roma community there's so much hate on people who aren't super dark. Or perhaps you don't know the language. Sadly some of our families left where they were due to persecution. My great great grandma was Roma from then Bohemia and left with my great great grandfather to NY. Back then in the states you definitely would have not told anyone you were Romani gypsy... Language wasn't spoken and not passed down along with so many traditions from the homeland and that community. I was only told in passing thing's and i thought it was just something my dad would say. It took year's for me to actually learn about my family and that ancestry.

My Roma heritage is long lost because my family had taken over the Dutch/western traditions. Because of this I don't speak Gypsy/roma. Through marriage and our family became more and more light skinned, so I look white myself. That being said, I AM gypsy. Not fully, like I said, it's a part of my genetics and heritage, but not fully. But even tho I am white and don't speak the language (because I was never taught it) I am still gypsy partially. Just wanted to say that cause saying "you're white and don't speak the language" doesn't make someone caucasian

My father is Boyash (Machvaja) born in Serbia, I was brought up in the UK. So I know what you mean by "real gypsies". But you are wrong there are none in the UK...Romanichal are our cousins & they speak similar vocabulary, but with English grammar & accents, & follow customs. They have been in the UK for 500 years. You will still meet some with darker colouring & Indian features, but you've seen English weather., anyone would go pale after 500 years: & even though everyone tries to deny it, of course there was mixing. Many Romani derived words are now in common English usage. Cosh (from cosht =stick) Wonga - English slang for money (Wonger = coal). Cushy/Cushty Kusht...Chav....etc Irish travellers are completely different group.

According to Oxford definition of Gypsy's: "Gypsies are a people found in many countries. The name Gypsy comes from the word ‘ Egyptian ’ because Gypsies were once thought to have come from Egypt. Some people now believe that they originally came from India. In the US Gypsies are called Roma, and in Britain they are known as Romanies or travellers. The name travellers is more often used for Irish travellers, a group in Britain who, like Gypsies, do not live in settled communities but travel about from place to place living in caravans. The traditional language of the Gypsies is Romani, and new words are made up from Romani elements rather than borrowed from English.Roma or Romanies, like many other minority groups, feel very proud of their identity. In Britain, they are sometimes treated with fear and suspicion by the rest of the population and are often forced to move on from places where they stop.Gypsies usually make money by selling new and second-hand goods. Some collect and sell scrap metal, while others do farm work. A few make a living from entertainment and singing. In the past the women were known for selling clothes pegs, ‘lucky’ white heather (= a wild plant) or bunches of flowers. Many meet each year at the Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria.Americans have little contact with Gypsies and think of the Roma as exciting, mysterious people who wear bright clothes and gold jewellery and have unusual powers.". There you have it!! I was once told by a Japanese the very word Gypsy is Japanese that described Japanese travellers culture 🤷♂️.. Can every traveller be entitled to the name of Gypsy? I don't know to be honest? Who has the full authenticity rights to it in first place 🤔? Egypt? India, Pakistan? Gypsy King's in Spain 😂? Japan? I find a great deal of connection between the Irish Gypsies dance taping with the dance I saw in this video! Therefore, I'll ignore the authenticity argument for now and enjoy the rest of the video ✌😅..

The name Gypsy comes from the word Egyptian because Europeans thought they came from Egypt instead of India thousand years ago. Just like Spanish explorers named Native Americans Indians because they thought they landed in India instead of North America, the names just stuck to them despite us knowing the truth now.
