The sad part of all this is the loss of gas/service stations. 40 years ago that's where a bunch of young guys, including me, got their starts as mechanics. You worked there for 5 years, gained a bunch of experience, learned a lot from the older mechanics and then moved on to a higher paying job and a new high school grad took your place. Now young guys that want to be mechanics have to go to 'college' and somehow pay for it while earning no money. So most borrow the money and come out to an entry level paycheck with a mountain of debt to pay off. No wonder auto mechanics is now a dying trade and cars have become disposable instead of repairable.

They can't tell you the truth & who own it or they will be fired. They have to walk a fine line NOW that the public has become aware of their FAKE NEWS and they are trying to get them back with REAL NEWS. The problem is they cannot report REAL NEWS which is non-partisan fact or they will be spanked by the owners who want everything pro-left and neg-right. Now we see a new movement of less obvious political headlines but also stories void of journalistic facts, since they cannot report the specifics without angering those that own and control these media monsters.

According to an owner operator of a Citgo , who used to double as a family owned and operated repair garage, there isn’t much money on gas sales. About $100-200k of your working capital is tied on an escrow deposit ( that is a 1995 figure, mind you ) to ensure the fuel delivery truck makes its scheduled refills. The money is inside the store, as far as gross margins are concerned. If you had to pay help to pump gas, you would operate at loss on the gas pumps. Lottery tickets, hot beverages , soft drinks , chips, and other items is where the money is made. The bigger the store floor and the better the location is ( accessibility, traffic , and visibility ) , the more the store will gross in sales. Is that simple. And then there are the add ones with car wash, drugstore , coffee shop, quick lube. If you don’t have the land and location, you ain’t making.

Antonio Costa I worked for QuikTrip between high school and college, the profit margins were astonishing inside the store, the company had a 10 year plan it was implementing right when I resigned, I saw the transformation as the years passed, it was interesting to see their evolution from the outside looking in, from hot dogs on a rolling grill to QT kitchens menu, ppl straight go there for dinner carryout crazy...oh yeah way before the FEDS changed the minimum wage to $7.25, QT hired me at 16 making $7.50 about two decades ago, I thought I was ballin' in high school, I paid my parents $200 a month rent, had 2 vehicles & paid the car insurance (at 16 expensive as FG@$$)... anyways, there's money to be made in the store, you need credit, capital, connections in city hall, & clear a course of action with contingencies

I’ve moved to Brazil since 2013 , after 28 continuous years in the US. The C-Store trend caught fire here as well. Within a quarter mile radius of my residence , on the same strip , there are three Shell Gas Stations , two other gas stations ( one domestic branded , other from a Spanish oil company ) , three drugstores , three supermarkets, a bakery , and a myriad of smaller retailers ( two butchers , a stationary store, three cleaning supplies and disposable items stores , a bunch of restaurants ). Anyways, one of the Shell stations has enough real estate to pack... a C-Store with a coffee and snack bar, which by the way also sells beer and hard liquor , a lube bay, a car wash in the back, and it subleases store fronts to a French franchised dry cleaners (5 a Sec ) , a Venetian blind store , a cell phone accessory store , and some Arab Dude selling pastry turnovers. I found out the owners have about a dozen of such places everywhere. The odd thing , all gas stations here have people to pump gas. Every now and then, gas station owners get caught in tampering with fuel ( volume metering, tainted fuel ) , they get the whole station padlocked. Reopening them takes months , fines , lost revenue. Yet most of them can’t bring themselves to get rid of pumping attendants and automate the pumps. Then I realized many if such places get busted has to do with mismanagement, a lot of these places were bought as part of money laundering by organized crime. And these goons do not have the will , nor the competence to manage a tight ship. True, C-Stores can be cash cows ( ask your local Indian or Arab operator ) , only if managed properly.

I'm from Australia and we have experienced this. Nowadays almost all of our petrol stations are owned by a few select corporations and it sucks. Because of the lack of competition, there is no incentive for one station to lower price. This means that all the stations decide on a set oil price and the customers pay up. The best example of this price-fixing was in march 2020 when oil prices plummeted. Petrol stations pulled in their biggest profits in a decade and it took weeks before the oil savings began tricking down to consumers. Protect your local gas stations while you still have them

The space for the store was leased by an independent or a corporate convenience chain. Sometimes by a competing petroleum marketing brand would be in a store owned by another company.. The brand of gasoline is usually one of those daughter companies of the producer. The repair equipment was removed and those shops were moved to a building that is just that, a auto repair shop. That opened more space for the convenience part the sale. It also removed the insurance requirements for repair facilities.

The CNBC article is educational for the consumer - however the more accurate picture is the C-Store owners themselves buy-up more C-Stores and then create LLC, medium sized corporations, or holding companies to manage their C-Store Fueling Stations. For example, one private owner owned over 100 C-store fueling stations. He was not a Super Major petroleum company. However many of the C-stores are indeed corporate owned by the majors.

I don't care who owns them. I want to know why gas prices go up the very moment the cost of oil does but doesn't go down in the same manner? They SLOWLY lower the price over weeks!
@andersonandrighi45394 жыл бұрын
Main reason is that the oil price that drops and rises is crude oil. Refinaries all over the world control the price of gasoline, diesel, and ethanol. When prices of oil barrel fall sometimes refinaries already bought their stock for the next trimester and they can't simply drop the prices. This crude oil war is meant to hurt countries since their taxes revenue come from royalties which in turn is linked to the price of oil barrel. Also if you are from the US you are less affected by Saudi, Venezuela and Russia's oil price since the US produce and refines its own oil.

There's a generic convenience store in Skyler, Virginia that has two gas pumps out front. It is sitting where the old general store of "Walton's Mountain" sat when Hammer was a boy. I've always wondered if someone could buy it, tear the building down and rebuild it as Ike Godsey's 1932 store with a gas pump in front and EV chargers in the back. Open 6am to 8pm. It wouldn't be a way to get rich, but it might be a way to have a happy business life. There are no dry goods stores in the area for 30 miles.

Just as it has happened in America, here in Australia more and more stations are becoming convenience stores as well as providing fuel. Mostly because they have no choice (fuel sales are so low margin that they need higher margin product to make up for it plus if they dont have the range, people will generally go to a station elsewhere that has that range)

I have a friend who runs a Chevron station in GA. He and 3 daughters work in split shifts opening at 6am close at 10pm every day. He pays $5,000 /month rent to the gasoline distributor who owns the station (and several others as well). My friend has to cover maintenance costs on everything inside the building (bathrooms plumbing-lights-security camera systems - beverage coolers etc). He tells me they average about $12 - 14 / hr each (after all expenses)- have no healthcare insurance/ retirement programs etc. His biggest complaint is having to send off payments to credit/ debit card banks / companies amounting to approximately $4,000 - 5,000 each month because system is rigged that he, the vendor has to pay for credit/ debit card transact fees. He feels the card users, because they decided to use cards, should pay trans act fees. (I agree with him.) He said store operators like him have made complaints with elected people but have found banks/card companies have strong lobbyists in our government. Card fees collected annually are estimated to be around $80 billion. 🤔
